Being an extremely active marathon runner, I have more than a couple stores I frequent for various runner needs. That said, this really a store worth checking out. Before you go, I will worn you: The selection is extremely limited, as it is a small store. And this is Hawaii, so the prices can hardly be categorized as bargains. But they do have amazing weekly or monthly sales (especially when it comes to running shoes). They're super friendly and well-informed. And they even host running lectures! They have their own running group called the Honolulu Runners that run on Tuesday evenings. It's a really fun group to run with. Definitely worth the stop, if for no other reason than to check out the sales and what running events are coming up on the island. You won't regret it. read more

I've purchased at least one running shoe from here every year for the last three years (four shoes). This store has great service and better prices than anywhere online. Try and find a shoe they have on sale anywhere online. The best I found is the same as their non-sale price. Even better, IMO, is that they have shoes in my size in 4E--even harder to find online. The only isolated problem that I've had with them is, i went to the store looking for neutral running shoes and specifically stated so. The salesperson suggests and ends up selling me a pair of Nike Zoom Structure 20 because they were out of the Pegasus 33. Went running with the shoes and in half a mile I'm getting shin splints and left big toe is in pain. Researched the shoe and it's for flat feet--terrible. Good thing about this place is their sales, price of shoes and accessories they sell. All good products. read more

Live in Pearl City. Been searching for running shoes for my high school son for two weeks. Went to all the normal shoe stores and even Runners Route-AIEA. Then went to Runners HI-Kapiolani. Thought it would be a similar experience but, I was wrong. Runners Route had a pleasant atmosphere & our salesperson Spencer was awesome! He was very attentive to our questions & concerns. He was very patient, while my son tried on a half dozen pairs of shoes. He even told us about specialty sock and gave my son a student discount (with valid proof of student ID). If you're looking for a full line of quality running shoes and want an awesome salesperson, go to Spencer at the Kapiolani Runners Route. Well worth the drive. read more

They don't do refunds, only exchanges or store credit for UNWORN merchandise. Shame on me for fronting the money for a new edition of Brooks Adrenalines here since Running Room on Kapahulu didn't have my size. Because companies keep tweaking their shoes with each new edition, I came to learn buying new running shoes is a trial-and-error process for me. Just because shoes feel good when trying them on and with a test run of ~100 yards doesn't mean they will feel good during a 3+ miler. After only logging a handful of runs in them (all 5 miles or less), I decided they weren't as comfortable as I'd like them to be, especially for marathon training. When I brought them back in hoping for an exchange, the worker inspected the shoes oh-so-carefully and even compared them to a brand new pair on the shelf. After his analysis, he decided they were too worn and wouldn't take them back. Running Room had never given me a problem with returns! Even if they were worn, they would do a refund with a 20% restocking fee, which I don't mind paying. Instead, I'm stuck with a $110 pair of shoes I'd probably never wear again. Come here only if you know exactly what you need, because good luck trying to exchange something if it doesn't work out. Be glad you got my money this time Runner's Route, because I won't be back again. read more

I purchased a HOKA shoes which hard to find. I bought it because it is hard to find my size and color I want but I bought it anyway even though it was a little bigger size. However, I realized later that I bought it without knowing I couldn't get refund but store credit. The owner said it is their policy and every sales person suppose to tell me about it. I only remember she mentioned that I can return the shoes within two weeks if the shoes is in good condition. I don't recall she mentioned that return policy is store credit only but no refund. When I talked to the owner, she stress that they are right and I agreed by signing the receipt she gave it to me. Maybe it is partially my fault for not pay attention closely. I swear I didn't hear the sales clerk telling me about the store credit policy. I was very upset and I don't think it is a good business practice. Anyway I have to buy something whether I like it or not otherwise I will loose my money. Bummed!!!!! read more

Two words: How unfortunate. It's the perfect location, right in town. There's parking out front, and they have a pretty good selection of running apparel, gear, stuff. But they are downright rude, unfriendly, unhelpful, UN-everything. I looked around, tried to get the worker's attention. He ignored me. I finally asked him for help. I think it pained him to respond. Couldn't even crack a smile. I told him I needed running shoes. He asked my size. Didn't ask anything else. Didn't measure my feet. Nothing. Brought out a pair. Said it was a good shoe. Didn't check my fit, didn't even help. I bought the shoe because I was desperate for a shoe. Well, after a few weeks, I couldn't understand why I kept getting a blood blister on my toes, my feet hurt like hell. I finally decided to get another shoe and that's when I ended up at Runner's HI. Lo and behold the shoe that Runners Route sold me was a whole size too small, was not the shoe I needed for the type of runner I was, everything about it was wrong. There went $120 down the drain. Never going back here. Would NEVER recommend it. Even if they had an unbelievable sale, I'd rather pay more to shop elsewhere. Highly UN-recommended. Two thumbs DOWN!! read more

I searched every where to find good pair of running shoes and then I found this store. Usually I am disappointed at other stores because I never find quality shoes, but I was so surprised to find several brands I loved at this store, great colors and quality and at a very reasonable price. They even have information on all the races in town and how to sign up. I would definitely recommend this store to all you sports people out there ! read more

If you prefer Asics then this is a good place for you. There is a separate section just for Asics. However, if you're going to shop there, then have a good idea of what you want and how much you want to spend. The help there wasn't the best. Just pick up your shoes, and get out. And there are pretty good clearance sales, but go early before all the good sizes are gone. read more

Its unfortunate I have to even put a one star for this store. Considering this is suppose to be a runners store. My husband went in and told the sales person he was looking, later as he found shoes he asked for his size and the sales person said " I thought you were just looking" WOW! Apparently they don't need sales here. My husband was ready to buy shoes but the lack of any customer service was beyond recognition at this place. He saw something on sale and the sales guy commented you get what you pay for. So worse to worse to worse responses has told us we will never recommend this place. We're running the marathon this year and the training has lead us to know what kind of running feet we have so it would be a great asset for this store to hire competent people with friendly and approachable personas. read more

I purchased two pairs of running shoes over $200 and asked if they would be going on sale because I could wait. One week later they're on sale so I asked if they would honor the sale price since it was less than 7 days. They said it doesn't include past purchases which many other stores would honor. They don't value or work with their loyal customers which is poor business practice. Lost me forever, will never buy anything from their store again. Nice, friendly and knowledgeable staff. Came in this past weekend b/c of the 20% shoes/clothes coupon I rec'd via email. My latest pair of running shoes were pretty beat up, so I was looking to replace them. The sales associate was really good and asked many questions, even offering suggestions to help alleviate some running aches and pains I've been experiencing. I would give 5 stars if I actually bought from there but I haven't YET so I won't, but I am impressed with what happened. I am in sales. I know how to get people to buy high end, or above their means. I don't practice it, but I can recognize the subtleties. They did NOT do that here. I went in knowing nothing other than I am starting to run again and I know nothing about my gait, pronation etc.. They looked at my feet, watched me walk, checked my arch etc and set up 3 pairs of shoes for me to try. Did they start with the most expensive? NO. I couldnt believe it. I had to ask for upgraded shoes and then they showed me the best. Hmmm. Then when I found what I liked I was offered a price and a 10% discount. Not if I "bought it now" Just a 10% discount because they were on sale. I'd rather spend my money locally, but I HAD to check online to see what other places were charging for the same shoes and it was IDENTICAL. Weird. With shipping from zappos or even eBay I would have paid more. I still have to check running room to see if maybe they have a different selection and to see if I can find a pair for under $129 that felt as good as the $129 pair in the route, but I am really pleasantly surprised. read more

I've come in here a few times and have not really felt like my business was appreciated so I left and put my buck elsewhere. Yes, they have a large selection of running apparel, shoes, and gear but the way I feel when I get there just isn't right. Maybe it's just me but I'm not comfortable. Mr. Chow needed some walking shoes so thought I'd check out this place. With all the different types of shoe stores around town I'm thinking there more or less the same. Hopefully walk into a store and find someone knowledgeable about shoes and can find a bargain at the same time. Lucky me because that's exactly what happened. First of all easy parking with lots of stalls fronting the store. A young man by the name of Race was helping me. Yup that's his name. I guess with a name like Race, if your not working at a hot rod shop, a shoe store would be 2nd best. This guy was on it! Told him what I was looking for and within minutes had 4 different choices in front of me. Bada bing - bada boom, I was out of there. Before I left I asked him if the establishment belongs to his family. Honestly I was surprised that he said no. The way he came across he truly represented the store as if it was his. (Family owned) I hope the owner of the store is aware of what a great asset he is to their business. Will be back and highly recommend. read more

I bought a pair of shoes in here used them to walk to the gym, attempted running on the treadmill when I realized the shoe was two small. I literally walked 4 blocks in the shoes. I took them back to the store and they told me they would not take them back. Really?!! Four blocks! Ridiculous. Which finding a good pair of running shoes for me can be rather difficult since my feet are wide and most of the mainstream stores don't carry wides. I just began running and was looking for an introductory shoe. The staff at Runners Route examined my gait and quickly recommended a corrective shoe for pronation. I bought the shoe, but soon discovered their diagnoses was incorrect--I'm actually pigeon-toed and flat arched. I attempted to return the shoe but discovered that the store had a no returns policy. This was my own fault, I should have asked before I bought, but I was still disheartened by the stores refusal to stand behind the shoes they themselves had recommended. More distressing, however, was the surly manner of the worker at the register. His attitude could best be described as 'buyer beware' and he had little sympathy for a rookie runner making a mistake. I left the store and drove East to Running Room on Kapahulu. A much different experience. The salesman here was friendly and spent half an hour running me through different shoes, discussing fitness plans, and then just talking story. The prices here were slightly more expensive, but when I felt like I needed more time to consider my purchase, the salesman suggested I come back later, no pressure. read more

Stopped in this afternoon to look for a pair of shoes. On a whim, I ran 4.5 miles last weekend and while it felt good overall, I totally didn't have the right shoes. My right foot paid the price, which meant I limped into work last Monday. Anyways, clearly I needed new shoes and was a bit disappointed with sports authority, service not very attentive and sales persons didn't seem too knowledgeable. I walked in here intending just to look around, no pressure at all from the sales staff. They were very helpful in answering questions and even asked to look at my arches to help me find the right shoe. I eventually walked out with a pair of asics which seemed to fit my needs. Very happy experience overall, glad to support a local business (I did check prices online and they were very reasonable and inline with online retailers). read more

Always come here for my running shoes because it's close to my apt and can bike or walk here. They had a marathon sale--20% off the whole store. I figured I would eventually need new shoes, so I got my usual Asics 2100 series (the new 2170s are PURPLE!!!). Don't need to ever try on because I wear the 2100 all the time. Since it was a marathon sale, I guess they were giving out a free pair of socks with shoe purchase! YAY! NEW SOCKS AND SHOES!!! Even though I didn't purchase anything from this store (they were sold out of my size in the shoe I was looking for) I was very impressed by the employee. He recommended several shoes, even shoes their store didn't carry, and other stores I could possibly find them at. The fact that he was willing to send me to another store for the health of my feet showed me that they really care about the customer and not as much as selling their most expensive products. They were also able to give me information about local running clubs and groups when I showed interest in running the Honolulu marathon. Their store was very clean and well organized. Location is great right by Ala Moana mall. On vacation I stopped in to inquire about the signs on Ala Moana Blvd that said "closing for a road race". Staff had no idea...turns out there was a 30k race in two days. Apparel selection 1 star, shoe selection 2 stars, staff knowledge 2 stars. I bought a misc energy gels, salt sticks, etc. Prices higher than other outlets but completely expected with a specialty running store. The kicker was when the staff advised I could put everything I bought in my pockets or buy a bag for 25 cents. read more

I'll start this review by first saying I'm not a runner. I actually HATE running, but something about this island makes me want to move all the time and NEVER stay in the house. Gym memberships can be costly and I want to take a crack at Crossfit sessions once I get the dough. Until then, I decided to follow in my roomie's footsteps and take a stab at running (which I hate) because its a FREE form of effective exercise. We live a few blocks off of Kapiolani so Runner's Route seemed like the obvious choice. My first experience was a bit overwhelming, but the staff was friendly enough to help me pick out a reasonably priced and comfortable shoe. I later decided I wanted to track my improvements and went looking for a GPS type watch. They only had 1 watch in stock that actually did that and it was about $300. One watch in the whole store that tracks how far you've run, how fast you've run and your pace, the rest were pretty much overpriced stop watches. They recommended I try Sports Authority for more of a selection and I actually found something very reasonable that did everything I wanted. Taking a second look at the store that day I realized that they lack heavily in the tech accessories department, and their apparel is a little pricey. I think this place is more suited for intermediate or hardcore runners because they do have a large selection of specialty apparel (shirts, shorts, socks, leg compression thingys, nutrient bars, vitamin packs, etc...) and shoes, but if you're looking for more stuff get you started, go to Sports Authority for a bigger selection. read more

Runners Route is a great running store deep in the heart of Honolulu that carries a great supply of shoes, clothes, and other running accessories. My wife and I have been there several times, especially after big runs, to look at sneakers (we're purchasing new running sneakers for each other for the holidays and as a reward for doing the Honolulu Marathon...again!). The staff there are very friendly and helpful when it comes to finding the right shoes for you and if they don't have it in stock they'll order it for you with no problem. Went in not sure whether they would have my shoe size since normally I wear a 4 1/2 but the gentleman there helped me size and find the shoes that would fit me and took the time to find me different colors that came in my size for me to choose from.
