This is a true gem! The first stop on a girls trip did not disappoint. Our waitress, Payton, surprised us with customized Bloody Mary's that were amazing! Food was sooo good and we were treated like we were long lost friends. Love love love this place. Can't wait to come back on a Saturday and stay for the live music. Payton - you rock!!

Service was great. It wasn't very busy so we got our food quick. I like that they have a salad bar with mixed greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, cheese , pasta , croutons, bacon and crackers. All the food was delicious.

Stopped in here on a whim, looking for a non-chain restaurant. It was crowded for a Friday nite, so i sat @ the bar & ate. Boudin Balls were awesome!! Had coconut shrimp, squash, & green beans. It all tasted good & came out at a decent time, esp. for as crowded as it was. I'll def. be back.

I ordered a 14 ounce steak and grilled shrimp with garlic mash potatoes. Very tasty. Atmosphere was light and fun. It's a bar with a pool table etc. Sat in the bar section and the service was fast and nice. Two girls at the bar traded off serving me well and were nice. Overall no complaints. It is a bar and for a more formal setting go down the street to the Alcalde restaurant and ask for Austin.

The food, which in my case was a hamburger was absolutely wonderful. The french fries were equally well done. The portions are generous and given how busy the restaurant is it was very well prepared. Again, given how busy this particular restaurant is the service is amazingly efficient, and the staff is very nice. Although I would suggest it is not a place you would necessarily want to come to relative to its ambience on the other hand you would miss a wonderful meal if you did not. In my case I chose the meal over the ambience and it was well worth it and that is the reason I give it five stars.

The food was especially good with large portions and very reasonably priced. I understand there is a meat market next door (I assume the meat comes from there). My Philly Cheese Steak was excellent. The hamburgers are 1/2 pound (unless you want bigger) and very good. My wife had the BLT and was amazed at how much better than normal the bacon was. Our nephew, who is a big eater, couldn't even finish his chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and country gravy and said he's never had better. We all had fries and they were fresh, house-made, and delicious. None of us could finish them all. We pass through Gonzales maybe a dozen times a year and since this place is a couple of block west of where we join Hwy 90A, we've never seen it. Other reviewers mentioned that it seems to be a favorite of the locals and now it one of ours too. The tables fill the room and if there were more I'm sure they would fill them, though that might mean the fast service could suffer, so to me it's fine as is. We will return and will start planning our trips to include lunch here. They close at 2 pm so will leave home with that in mind.

The sautéed veggies were also an amazing side and has complimented the combo tremendously. I didn't need to use steak sauce at all to cherish the red meat. A small slice at a time plus a little veggie forkful was all it took to have this 5-star taste experience. Add tasty grilled shrimp to palate next. The ambience was great although I think I am starting to get too old for the volume of music at amazing joints like this. I should know better coz it's a sports bar. But I'm fine nonetheless. I heard that their signature Margherita pizza is the star of the show. I should have that next year when I come back to Gonzales. Kayleigh, my server, was top notch. Incredible experience being in downtown Gonzales TX for the first time. A rain storm took me here by destiny. God is good coz I was able to find a church downtown for 4pm worship, then after that while waiting for the rain storm to diminish, gave me the best excuse to have early dinner at this amazing historic restaurant -- I believe a well-deserved stopover after a tiring but fruitful time teaching Redemption at my 8th Royal Rangers PowWow in Halletsville. It's a card game I've been playing and teaching for more than 20 years and counting. See you in a bit Gonzales. See u in a bit Come and Take It.

You place your order and then take a seat and when they bring out your food, you get a little pocket to put cash into to pay whatever you want. The food was great and it benefits addiction recovery. My only complaint is that they really really really need to put fans on the patio cause I was swatting away flies the entire time I was eating. I wouldn't eat outside again. I went for breakfast and had a 3-meat omlette which I actually couldn't even finish cause I was full. It was a little weird getting the apple juice in a cup full of ice but I guess I could have gotten more if I wanted it. I'd like to back for lunch sometime.

The restaurant is cafeteria-style, with everything priced at $8.99 per pound, which we didn't expect but ended up working great for our family since everyone could choose exactly what they wanted. The food tasted homemade, and the salad bar was especially impressive with lots of fresh options. The chicken tenders were a big hit with the kids, and we couldn't resist trying the cherry cobbler for dessert, which was delicious. In a style that you don't see as often as their once was, they offer home cooking by the pound. Today there was catfish, chicken tenders, hamburger steak 3 ways, turkey, and lasagna, and probably a few I missed. They also had a very fresh salad bar with the best options you can ask for in before you indulge in the fried goodies. I caught them right before close so I was offered a discount take it to go. Al fresco dining was fine by me so I got to enjoy my weighty meal whilst looking at one of my favorite Texas institutions and sat amongst the ruins of the Sunken Garden.
