Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. Literally. I got a graduation t-shirt indicating that I completed physical therapy. Boom. I loved the people. They were always there, always multitasking, always with positive dispositions. They were sensitive to the fact that I had to pay 100% for my physical therapy due to my high deductible insurance. What I didn't like (and this has more to do with the company than this particular location) is that the physical therapist usually has to combine up to three people with different issues into the same appointment time slot. I value individual attention and I didn't get it all the time. Sometimes they'd get me started on an exercise and then leave me so that they could work with someone else. I could usually do the exercises on my own at home (and often those exercises were assigned to me as homework). What's the point of me paying for that? I also didn't like how each appointment was billed at a different amount. For example, one appointment might be $153 and another $76 and then another $132 as if each appointment was for a distinct and varied amount of physical therapy. I still don't get that. read more

I'll start my review by saying I used to think physical therapy was a sham. Total witch doctor, like a chiropractor where you go and spend a bunch of time and money and just try to make yourself believe its working. I've gone to other PT places, namely the bigger chains in the area, and quit after 1 or 2 sessions because I wasn't impressed and knew I was getting ripped off. I've had knee problems for well over a year. I was getting a painful pop every time I took a step when running and it affected me on the stairs too. I started at Novacare after reading great reviews and figured it was worth a shot. After my first session with Andrea, I felt so much more optimistic than I ever have. She knew right away why I was having the pain I was and how to treat it. I will say that after a few months, I still was having pain and it turned out I did in fact need surgery. But that was nothing that PT could have prevented. I'm now 2 months post-op and Andrea has me back in action better than I could have hoped for at this point. I've now been a patient there for 7 months in total and I never have felt like I wasted time or money going. They have changed my outlook entirely about physical therapy. The space itself is small but I really like that because you get more attention than other places that give you an exercise to do and then walk away from you for 20 minutes. I've also seen Tyson too. They take great notes when you see multiple therapists so you don't have to waste time telling them about your injury or what exercises you've been working on. They already know. I would hands down recommend Novacare to anyone that needs PT. Even non-believers like myself. I hope I don't have to get more therapy down the road but if I do at least I know where to go! read more

All I can say is that I have a severe herniated L5/S1 Disc in my lower back, which most likely will require surgery, in most cases. Will Waterman, PT, DPT has been working with me for about a month and has helped me get to a point where I can at least manage my pain. When my condition flared up, Will worked with the physician, providing details of my condition, and working on ways to relieve the pain in order for me to have a somewhat normal life. I really appreciate his dedication and attention to my specific issue. To better serve me, Will even consulted different Physical Therapist to develop the best course of action and treatment for me. Tyson Sanchez is an amazing Physical Therapist. I first worked with him nine years ago and always go to him when I have PT needs. Three years ago I injured my IT band and Tyson and Pete were amazing in helping me recover from that injury. Because of that injury I discovered my hip had major arthritis and I needed a resurfacing. After I had surgery, Tyson worked it so I could get to his facility when I was not able to drive. He and Pete got me to fall in love with CrossFit. Tyson believes in working the whole body, not just the affected area. They got me addicted to using kettlebells. Over the years I have seen that Tyson and Pete really care for their patients. I have seen Tyson be so gentle with older patients. He and Pete have worked to motivate me. I always recommend friends and colleagues to go to Tyson when they need PT work. My physician also sends patients to him also. I know that when Tyson's bosses in the past needed PT work, they have gone to Tyson. He is the best in the business. The facility is in the top of the FFC complex, and so there is access to use the kettlebells, pool, sauna, TRX and ropes, or whatever Tyson wants you to use for your therapy. read more

I cannot say enough about this NovaCare facility and Will Waterman. From the moment I started therapy, I felt like my injury would be cared for properly. Not to mention that he made PT fun...I know, how much fun can it really be? Well, it is possible. I began to see an improvement in my pain within a few weeks. Will also explained that my chronic ankle sprains were tied to a weakness and misalignment of my hips, so he had me do strength exercises. This had never been something that other therapists had even offered to check out in previous times that I had to go to PT. After my round of PT was over at NovaCare, Will gave me maintenance information and said the door was always open for any questions, etc. All in all, I had a wonderful and productive experience with Will Waterman at NovaCare. I HIGHLY recommend NovaCare at 939 W. North Ave. They will have you back on your feet and active in no time!! read more

I'm a masochistic runner who gets injured every other year or so. The first time this occured about 3 years ago or so, I'd never been to PT before and must have just gotten lucky when I chose the North Ave. Novacare location as Ryan is just excellent. I highly highly highly recommend him. PT is never really fun I learned, but Ryan is incredibly creative so the sessions weren't 'un-fun' :) Anyway, if you live in Lincoln Park/Wicker Park, etc. and need PT, check this clinic out. I am HUGE fan of Mr. Sanchez & can't compliment him enough. I began marathon training back in 2011 & he helped me through myriad issues (ankle, knee, hamstring, IT Band etc) & devised a successful strength & conditioning plan that got me through my first 26.2 miles. As a result of that success, I see Mr Sanchez every summer while training & we tweak my training plan accordingly. This past summer, with Tyson's careful assistance, I was able to complete both the Chicago & New York Marathons within a mere 3 week period. This summer I fully plan to continue my close work with Tyson to see if we can't somehow top our 2013 success. Working with Emily and Piotr was great. I had ACL and lateral meniscus surgery last year and saw them for about 6 months. They were always friendly, helpful, and accommodating to my schedule. I could tell they genuinely cared about me getting better and we got to know each other well. There were also complications with my insurance and they helped navigate this to make sure I got the most visits for the longest period of time. I also had a minor shoulder impingement recently that they helped fix in just a few visits. The only review on here from the last five years that wasn't five stars mentions the lack of "individual attention" because multiple patients were in the room at once. When researching my PT location this concerned me, but I have to say that was not my experience at all. Yes, there are a few others in the room at times but while you are spending 3-5 minutes on one exercise, it would be overkill to have your therapist watch you do the same repetitive motion once you have it down. I never felt like they were not paying attention as I was still learning it. This multiple-patients-at-once formula helps keep your visit price down, otherwise if it were truly individual the cost would go up. The same reviewer also talks about doing the exercises in a session when they could do them at home; there were times when I said I was comfortable with an exercise and Emily and Piotr immediately switched it up. One of their main goals is ensuring you have the ability to correctly do these at home, which means doing them a couple times in their supervision. As long as you communicate truthfully where you are in the learning process and do your "homework", they will take care of the rest. read more

Tyson was my therapist during my marathon training in 2014, I had never been in therapy before and always had bad comments from other people in general(Not from Novacare). I can say that my experience was phenomenal, Tyson, Peter, Donielle and her assistant (the Hispanic young lady). I remember in the very beginning Tyson listened to me, evaluated me, went over the issues I had with my IT band and how we were going to work on it to improve it; he said we will do a tune up for your body. During almost 4 month this team work with me and made me feel very comfortable, relaxed and confident about my problem. Tyson creating my routines and applying his knowledge, Peter making sure I was doing the exercises correctly, Donielle giving me advice to improve my performance, she even suggested to see a nutritionist and my Hispanic friend doing the exercises with me ( I always thought, if she did this with every patient she must be very tired at the end of hr day, lol). They all shared their experiences and helped me in different ways. During my training I hurt my back and a bone in my right knee got a little out of place, and hurt badly, it only take one session each for Tyson to fix those two issues which I thought it was practically impossible or would take a while to resolve these problems. At the end Tyson surely made his word count, even when I hesitated he always said I would do great during the marathon, since Novacare is always present at I think every race I been to Tyson or Donielle were always there and if had any injuries or questions and could go to have them take a look right away if treatment was needed. Tyson tracked me during the actual marathon to see how I was doing, he was like my personal coach along with all the team at Novacare North Ave. The results: My It band improved a lot, my knee or my back were no longer a problem, and improved my Personal Record from 05:46:59 in 2013 to 04:26:21. In 4 years I've had whiplash, shattered radius, runners knee, shoulder impingement...comes with my preferred sport - that I love and refuse to give up. I experienced a significant knee injury in Paris, where I know live and had knee reconstructive surgery. After 4 months of disappointing PT in Paris where I was unable to bend the knee more than 90 degrees, I made a special trip back to Chicago just to get treatment from Emily and Piotr. I arrived in Chicago using crutches, and 4 weeks later, was able to bike 40 hilly miles in Michigan days before I left. None of that would have been possible were it not for the astute, creative, challenging and nurturing care of Emily and Piotr. Each visit started with Emily's application of the Graston Technique that increased my knee mobility (increased to 125 degrees vs. the 90 degrees when I arrived). They gave me an increasingly challenging and varied regimen designed to increase my knee strength and mobility. They also gave me the tools to continue my improvement after I left. I've (unfortunately) been to 4 different physical therapists over the past 3 years for various surgeries both in San Francisco and Chicago. I found Tyson to be the best by far, primarily because of his years of experience and attention to detail but also because of his undying support for his clients. He has the perfect combination of pushing you but being gentle and understanding your limits. I also really admire Pete; he goes above and beyond in ensuring clients have proper form when they go through exercises and in explaining why the exercise is important. Between Pete and Tyson, I've seen the room be very packed and yet very relaxed and well-run. They have a great dynamic and work efficiently together. After 7 months, I just graduated and am very grateful for where they got me with a very bad knee injury. It's small, clean, professional and in a great location. I went to see Tyson for a hamstring injury. The injury was so bad and painful I couldn't do any activities that required using my hamstring or sit without feeling pain and discomfort. I went to Tyson in hopes that my injury would be healed in time for my Yoga Teacher training which was just 2 months away. His treatment included Graston, electric stimulation and some great exercises, all of which strengthened and healed my hamstring in less than a month. I'm grateful to have had Tyson as my therapist and for his ability to successfully heal my hamstring so quickly. I'm now able to return to my regular Yoga practice, attend my Yoga Teacher training as well as my other daily activities without any pain or discomfort. I highly recommend this Novacare clinic. I first came here to get help with a chronic lower back issue that turned into a more acute problem. My therapist, Ryan Perry, was deeply knowledgeable in all areas of anatomy. He took the time to explain to me the nature of my problem, reviewed with me where there were muscular imbalances in my body, and then developed exercises to help correct these imbalances. I found Ryan helpful enough that I ended up going back to my doc to ask for a second script so I could work with Ryan to address a nagging chronic shoulder/neck problem that past physical therapists I have tried did not successfully treat. Today I am mostly pain free and much stronger and athletic than I have been in a long time. For help with any type of injury, this is definitely the place to go. read more

A physician referred me to Will Waterman to help diagnose and rehabilitate my lower back injury. As a college athlete I was in and out of the trainer's room, had x-rays, saw chiropractors, and worked with other PT's in my hometown of Washington DC. Nothing helped. I'It wasn't until I started working with WIll that I began to see results. Will clearly explained to me the source of back injury how it affected the rest of my body. He showed me a wide variety of exercises and coached me through them so that I can now do them on my own to prevent the injury from returning. I haven't felt better in a long time! Lets just say I am a seasoned veteran when it comes to physical therapy having undergone rehab from multiple running and triathlon training injuries. No other therapist I have ever seen has matched up to Ryan Perry at the Novacare office on North ave. His techniques are modern, his exericises are always just at that right level to keep you progressing and the pain away. More so, Ryan shows a deep caring and understanding to the issues that you are experiencing with the injury. Some people forget how mentally and emotionally draining injuries can be and Ryan was always there to keep my head up and pointed in the right direction. In terms of technqiues, Ryan utilizes manual techniques such as hand manipulation, as well as my favorite the Graston technique which has been one of the key factors in healing my body from a chronic leg injury that has hindered me for over 5 years now. Where all other therapists have let me down (Athletico, Accelerated Rehab, University of Wisconsin), Ryan has shined through with the knowledge to get you back doing what you love to do. It is not a surprise that Ryan is a therapist that Novacare chose to open a new location in Chicago in Lincoln Square. It is also not a surprise that Ryan travels the country to teach other therapists as well. He may be a busy guy and tough to get an appoitment with, but it is completely 100% worth the hassle. read more

I have been going to see Emily and Peter for about 6-7 weeks for a knee injury, and cannot speak highly enough of them! They are extremely knowledgeable and attentive, and genuinely care about each patient. They push me to challenge myself at each session, but in a nurturing way which doesn't make it feel so difficult. Recovering from a physical injury, especially for an active individual, can be a challenging process, both mentally and physically; their positive, welcoming environment and the visible progress I have made in a short amount of time under their care has kept me motivated. I just had your typical back and neck pain that sitting at a computer can give you, and Dr. Perry did a great job in helping me understand what the problems are and how to deal with them. He was able to tell me what muscles were getting overused and under-used, and helped me arrange my work station so that I can be more pain free. Also, gave me a full regimen of what to do to prevent it. I couldn't ask for a better experience, as far as getting a clear diagnosis of what the problems were, and how to prevent them. Tyson is the best it's going to get!!! I recently went to Novacare for physical therapy after a biking accident. Tyson instantly made me feel comfortable. He's super knowledgable and listens to the patient! Always accommodating schedule needs. I was in therapy for several months and came out feeling wonderful and back to new again. Peter who works very closely with Tyson was awesome too!! He would make tasks and exercises so fun and explain why you were doing specific ones. I suffered a stress fracture exactly half-way through summer training as I prepared for the Chicago Marathon. I began PT twice a week with Will at Novacare on August 18 and was very pleased with how he worked with my needs and goals as a runner to get to the start line of the Chicago Marathon injury-free just 10 weeks after my stress fracture was diagnosed. With the help of Novacare not only was I able to get to the start line of the Chicago Marathon, but I was able to complete it within two minutes of my personal best. The team at Novacare truly understands the runner mentality and will do whatever they can to help you achieve your running goals injury-free. Through the exercises I was given during my PT at Novacare I've come back stronger than ever and have set several new personal bests at various distances since then. I came to Novacare because it was highly recommended. My experience started out great, I saw a lot of improvement and found Ryan to be knowledgeable about my leg problems. After a year of twice a week appointments + exercises at home, my progress plateaued. I was no longer receiving attention for more than a few minutes from anyone other than the students there for training. By then end of this ordeal, Ryan used me to teach a student an adjustment on my back. Prior to this act, I had never had a back problem in my life. Immediately afterward, I was in a lot of pain and had to schedule a number of emergency sessions because the pain was so severe, it was waking me up in the middle of the night. I did the exercises I was told me to do, but I felt the staff was mostly unhelpful and a bit dismissive. My back pain is now a daily problem resulting in a recent hospitalization. After all of this, my initial leg injuries were never resolved and I have a new, even more painful problem to deal with. read more
