we have been customers of the Plainfield Russes restaurant for close to 30 years I believe. We recently ordered through the drive-through a mushroom Swiss burger. That was extremely well done. We couldn't even appreciate the cheese and barely any mushroom to be found anywhere on it. We also ordered the following week and I was very disappointed that my soup was barely warm, no napkins in the bag, which is very unusual. Every restaurant can have an off day I suppose. I had the olive burger. Nice fresh soft bun tasty burger w lots of olives . My ice tea was topped off as was my friends sprite wo having to ask. My salad was huge & fresh. Ordered a shrimp dinner to take home for my husband so he could eat it when he got home from work. 6 puny shrimp, a small handful of fries, a roll that equaled half of the entire dinner, and some cock sauce that equals almost an entire quarter of the takeout container. There was supposed to be coleslaw, but they forgot it. This is not the first time that this restaurant has disappointed us with its takeout, but it will be the last. 14$ for this joke. I had to go get more shrimp and coleslaw just so he could have a full meal. Find another restaurant if you want to get an entire meal instead of paying 14$ for a snack. My family has been regulars to the Plainfield Russ' for YEARS. It's a staple for a good menu and not going broke for taking out the whole family. Now that we have 3 small boys, it's definitely in our dine out rotation since they have full high chairs with trays and they still provide things like crackers and a coloring sheet with it. Excellent pricing on the kid's menu as well! For the adults the menu is simple for when you just want some decent food without all the exotic ingredients that you'd reserve for a fancy night out. We're big fans of the chopped steak, grilled chicken, burgers, and we always make sure to go when strawberry shortcake is in season! I could seriously do my entire review based on the strawberry shortcake. I could eat the cake/biscuit part by itself! When it's warm and served with the fresh strawberry topping and real whipped cream....... You make sure to savor each bite! Now I do have to mention that I'm reviewing the Plainfield location because it's our favorite. We actually live closer to a different one, but Russ' clearly invests in this location because the space is the most modern and comfortable. Definitely consider Russ' if your family needs a reason to go out for some good food! read more

Every single order is either barely warm or cold. Just last night I got a turkey dinner. First bite of the stuffing.... Cold. First bite of the turkey....cold. Stopped in for breakfast on Saturday, 2-4-23. I have always loved Russ', and this trip was one more confirmation. Had originally met a friend at another local breakfast shop nearby, only to be ignored by the waitstaff. Yes, they were very busy, but please, at least make eye contact, and acknowledge me. Talked my friend into Russ', as she stated she was starving. Was immediately greeted by the hostess, and seated. Within moments, our waitress, Shelly greeted us. She was so pleasant. Like others have said this is not a foodie place but if you want just simple good food at a reasonable price this is a great option. For me this brings back my inner kid going with my family in Holland and even having my first waitress job on the tele dining side. I miss the telephone ordering. The soup / salad bar is fresh and offers the basics plus bacon along with all their homemade soups. I love the chicken corn chowder which has some sweetness to it! I also have to recommend the croutons they are so delicious that we get a to go container of them (3.99). The soup and salad bar is about $10 a person, is unlimited, and includes unlimited baked potatoes. Pro tip - load the baked potatoes up at the salad bar and the server can heat it up a little afterwards if you need it. I ordered the olive burger for lunch today due to my schedule. This is an old dutch staple of Grand Rapids. My parents used to drag me here on Wednesdays after church services when I was a child and I would suffer through hours of coffee talk while I munched on a sloppy, home-made-style $3 hamburger with ranch dressing as the secret sauce. Although i'm sure the food is good if you're into the old fashion midwest grub, the hours of pain taint my perception of the place every time I visit. Russ's is very popular with the gray-haired audience, but is also a good place to take kids. Everything is extremely bland and salty, so kids can find lots that they like on the menu. I've had many things there, and never had anything awful. The Sunshine Salad and Michigan Cherry Chicken Salad are both pretty good, the grilled cheese sandwich was fine. the grilled cheese sandwich is fine, and the split pea soup is fine. Their burgers and fries are good, and desserts are quite tasty. Recently, on a visit with my family, I got the fish sandwich, which wasn't very good (greasy!). I had peanut butter pie for dessert, which was rich and tasty. My daughter ordered the cheese pie for dessert, which I ordered as "cheesecake". When it came, it tasted like key lime pie, and not good key lime pie. When I questioned the waitress, she said, "Well, it's more like cheese pie than cheesecake." Uh....huh? I was pretty annoyed that it went uneaten and she didn't offer to bring something else or take it off the bill. The service is usually very good. Russ's is not a gourmet restaurant, and a vegan would find absolutely nothing to eat on the menu. However, for older people or families, it's perfectly fine, and pretty inexpensive. read more

I come here every time I'm in Michigan. Good o'l comfort food. The Ruben sandwich with an order of onion rings and a piece of lemon pie is what I always order. I wouldn't bring a girl here on a date unless I've been seeing her for a couple of months but the food does hit the spot. they have really gone downhill very disappointed. Last time i was there they were very rude. i ordered a kids meal and the lady at the window told me i was not allowed to because i did not have the child with me. seriously??? Then this time i ordered a chicken Caesar salad which has always come with a roll in the past. they did not give me a roll and i literally only had 3 skinny slices of chicken!!!! i called to ask about the roll and was told they no longer give rolls with the salad. wow!!! cuz i am sure not giving rolls and only giving half a chicken breast will keep your failing restaurant afloat. good luck with that; because you just lost my business for good! read more

This is pretty much our lunch hangout- once a week- they have a pretty good salad and soup bar. The best pumpkin pie too! However, they have a lady who seats people and does the cash out line. She never greets you, and literally throws your menu in your table and walks away. When we go to pay our bill, we have to wait for ever, I mean there are at least 5 people waiting for her, and when she's done with you, you don't even get a " thanks for coming in" or " have a good one." One of the worst experiences I've had at a restaurant. We dont dine out a lot and this proves as to why. Greater turned her back on me the moment I walked in and after a few awkward moments says nothing other than "follow me". She gives my son and I one menu. I order from the waitress a Hot Turkey Sandwich and a Side Salad. When i am served my salad with dressing on the side, I dress the salad with half the Ranch given to me. I kid you not, its gritty and so salty that I truthfully believe an entire spoonful of salt was purposefully poured into it. It was completely inedible and I asked the waitress to please take it off my bill. She asks if I'd like another and I simple say no. She says...no one has ever complained before. Okay, but none the less it is laden with salt. I get my meal and inspect the sandwich. Its a brown smeared mess on bread. Not Turkey....more like scraps of turkey ground into an almost paste. I ask politely to speak to the manager. He says....something wrong with your food? My response... Yes, does it look right to you. He states that the food comes straight from the commissary and people like it, but asks if I'd like something else. I say...no just take them both off my bill. He asks if I'd like a free dessert. Absolutely not. If you cant do a salad or meal correctly, why would I hold out hope for a dessert free or not. As a manager, I'd be ashamed to have this type of service and product. We went here for the first time recently and were pleasantly surprised. The menu is straight-ahead Midwest comfort food as other reviewers have noted. However based on our experience I would say that Russ' food is of significantly higher quality than similar chains like Big Boy, Rams Horn, and the like. One walked off and finally the second decided to seat the man waiting behind me first. Left. had a similar issue at their location on 28th street last year. I was seated but no one would wait on me.
