Always good food, great service, and a personal welcome from Charlie! Love the appetizers and chicken Alfredo. Large servings, cold beer. CHARLIE

This is like a Cheers type of place, where everybody knows your name. Or if they don't, they will by the time you leave. My aunt and uncle have been regulars at Charlie's for years and when I mentioned them to our server, she was so delighted and even had the owner (Charlie) come over to talk to us. Charlie's menu is huge and everything I've had is good. The prices are great and don't seem to have been affected too much over the years, which is amazing and hard to come by these days. I'd been seeing this photo of their scallop dinner on some local foodie Facebook groups, so I knew I wanted to try it. The dinner comes with a side salad, seasonal veggie, red skinned potatoes, and four large scallops. Nate got the Fabulous burger, which is their olive burger. Our food took a little bit to come out but everything was SO good. This is the best food you'll find at a divey bar in town. The scallops were cooked perfectly and were so tasty. I loved the potatoes and green beans and I got a side Caesar salad. They make their own Caesar dressing and it's really yummy. I loved Nate's burger - it was perfectly cooked (medium as requested) and seasoned well. They have the beer battered fries that are so delicious. We had several people stop by our table to chat which was fun. Service is super friendly and kind, a little bit slow at times, but we were enjoying a relaxing dinner. Other items we've had include their burritos (they are massive) and their grilled cheese sandwiches (they have a whole section of them on the menu). Like I said, everything we've eaten at Charlie's has been good! I will say that the parking lot is a total disaster - it's full of pot holes and it can get kind of chaotic as there aren't any clearly designated spots in the back. That being said, I think it's totally worth it.

A friend introduced me to this place, and I'm so glad she did. We had the famous house made mozzarella sticks, potato skins for app. I ordered a gin and tonic that doesn't skimp on the G and walleye sandwich. My guys and had the wet burrito. Both were really good. We had to go back a few weeks later to bring our kids. The menu is expansive with Mexican dishes, burgers, seafood (shrimp basket, scallop entree, etc), flatbreads, and an array of sandwiches and main entree. My son had the best grilled cheese with bacon, and my daughter got chicken tenders. This time I ordered thr French dip (yum!), and my husband enjoyed the burger. You can't beat the prices and the made from scratch quality food. I'm not a ranch fan, but their homemade dressing was delicious with the mozz sticks. Not fancy, just good food, friendly service at this old bar and grill institution.

Finally made it to Charlie's for the first time and was totally CHARMED by the warm welcome from the staff, including Charlie herself! Went on a early afternoon Valentine's Day lunch date and enjoyed the excellent scratch-made fare, including the 1/2 Bang Bang 1/2 Firecracker Shrimp appetizer, a Caesar salad, the Wet Burrito, and the absolutely scrumptious Pan-Seared Sea Scallop Appetizer. I immediately fell in love with the come-as-you-are, old-school 80s interior and music playlist, which inspired some fun singalongs from the floor and bar workers. It was apparent that they have a lot of pride in and enthusiasm for the establishment and truly enjoy working there. Our server Tracy was friendly and fun, gave great recommendations, and saw to our every need. I chose Charlie's specifically after seeing a picture of the sea scallops posted in a local foodie group and I can say, without a doubt, that they exceeded my expectations! And it was truly a "white tablecloth" entree for 1/2 of what it might cost at local seafood restaurants. Charlie's is the quintessential hidden gem AND a good old fashioned watering hole in one :)

This is a neighborhood favorite. It's always packed and the menu is huge. You could go here over and over not eat the same thing twice. I ordered Charlie wet burrito. It's huge and I had lunch the next day. My sister had the steak special with potatoes and green beans. They have a full bar and the drinks are so good. Come in grab a chair and enjoy the night

Looking for a different place for lunch, we decided to go to Charlies Bar and Grill. As far as I can tell, Charlies has been here forever and I've driven past it countless times but have never stopped in. Today we did. First thing that amazed me was the huge menu. The second thing was the reasonable prices. In fact, I thought pricing would dictate quality. I was wrong. I ordered a French Dip and my wife had the "No Name" Ham and Swiss with tomato soup. To say we both loved our choices is an understatement. Service was excellent as well. Given the extensive menu and our first great experience here, we will absolutely be back soon. Another great find! What took me so long?

Great Ambiance and a classic dive bar feel with upscale food. The staff made me feel very comfortable and at home.

Been here many, many times. I love it more each time. Charlie, I am pretty sure she is always here. I love she is so invested. She may sleep here, I don't know for certain. Super friendly staff, great drinks and I usually choose between three things. Mr Fabulous burger, Charlie's choice or nachos. My hubby and I usually split something and it works out great! Great local spot, though I bring all out of towners here or recommend those to try here.

We stopped in on a weekday around 7 pm and there was plenty of open seating in the large bar area. Our server was pretty busy but very kind. I ordered the chicken parmigiana and Nate got the wet burrito. Our food did take a bit of time to come out, but when it arrived, everything was hot and fresh. The chicken parm was a huge portion and it came with an entire loaf of garlic bread, so I had plenty of leftovers. It was super saucy (which I liked) and cheesy. It was also really salty! I had several bites of Nate's burrito, which was flavorful and tasty (also very salty). Overall it was a good visit, the bar was large and clean, and I'm glad we got a chance to check it out.

The management is why I'm bringing this rating down to 3 stars. The person in charge was probably the worst micro manager that I have ever seen. She then held up our waitress for several minutes while we were waiting for our check. I asked our waitress if all was ok, and she said that the manager was talking to her about being a bartender. Cooks and waitstaff, excellent job. They have a smaller dining space, so a reservation is recommended (you have to call, no online option) but when we arrived, they were ready and seated us promptly! We each got some sort of steak, potato and veggie combo and it was all VERY delicious! They offer you complementary homemade bread (this did take a bit of time, but they were warm when they came out) and we easily devoured it! I will say that it was a little slower than anticipated, but still very good. I would hope the bread would come out sooner than our appetizers. I ordered the caesar salad (very large) and included bleu cheese which was not listed on the menu. I would definitely list that on the menu unless it was an accident? We got bleu cheese on the bruschetta which listed another cheese, so again, I do think that they need to disclose this. I like it but most do not! I also ordered the $29 steak deal, which for the size and meal, I am very happy with! I ordered it medium rare and it was cooked properly. More rare than medium, which is how I like it! I think I'd like to come back and try it again, but for a good steak meal, it's approachable without feeling like it's TOO casual with peanuts on the ground. Parking is available across the street, but you do have to cross West River Drive, which can be a lot, but cars were patient while we made our way across. I'll definitely be back!

We had a reservation, which is highly recommended as it's not a huge space. You do have to call to make a reservation. The space is cozy and not super fancy, which made it comfortable for a long girls' dinner with lots of catching up. Some of us started with salads and an appetizer. They also gave us some complimentary rolls and butter. My Caesar salad was fresh and tasty, and a large portion for a side, but it had a lot of blue cheese crumbles, which wasn't listed on the menu. I personally love blue cheese, so I didn't mind, but it's a pretty polarizing ingredient so it surprised me a bit. The bruschetta was a really big portion and very delicious. I liked the amount of topping and the bread help up nicely. This dish also had blue cheese crumbles on it when we tried it. The steak menu is interesting and varied, and I like that all the cuts come with a potato and vegetable side, which isn't typical at fancier places. I went with the 10 oz barrel cut filet with mashed potatoes and asparagus, and I also ordered a side of the mac and cheese. Our main courses took a little bit of time to come out, but I was pleased with the meal. My medium rare filet was definitely more on the rare side, but I didn't mind. The mac and cheese was tasty but the sauce was a bit broken. It also had peas in it... not listed on the menu and also kind of weird. I liked it though! We were interested in the dessert options, but it sounded like they haven't really rounded that out yet as they just had a couple cupcakes. Our server was very kind and helpful and pretty attentive. I think the value is great and it's a less stuffy, more casual option than Chop House (plus more affordable). I will definitely be back!

Lofted above is a great looking outdoors complete with heat lamps and a mini A framed covered area that can be rented for parties. We were greeted warmly by friendly staff and given a kids menu, draft and spirits menu, regular menu and restaurant week menu. Menus galore! We went with the 3 course meal (many items can be ordered on the regular menu) for $25. I ordered the tomato paprika soup and my husband got the split pea soup. Of the two, the split pea soup was the clear winner. Two kinds of pork (cubed and shredded), well balanced seasoning and texture married well to enhance a soup I've loved since childhood. I could've easily eaten a bowl for my meal. The accompanying homemade Dutch Rye Bread, though I'm sure it's authentic, I didn't care for. It was dense, soft and had an off putting flavor. The second course we had was equally delicious. My hubby had the beef and pork sausage overtop a bed of mashed potatoes with kale, onions and bacon. I loved the addition of kale and the sausage was tasty. Everything was well seasoned. My beef slow cooked with apples and beer was delicious. I wish it had been served with more beef. It would have been nice to have some bigger chunks of meat to dive into. The mashed potatoes they came with were good, but the potatoes with kale were the star between the two dishes. The kid's meals were also good. The hamburger had a nice smokey flavor with a tasty side of fries. My daughter didn't care for her Mac 'n cheese, but that's because it was too refined for her palette. The Gouda cheese was complimented by the egg noodles. The third course was dessert. I tried the restaurant Flip custard: Dutch custard, fruit compote, and topped with a dollop of Greek Yogurt. It came with a cute spoon that gave the perfect portions and the flavors all complemented each other well. I would order this again and again. It was a great balance of tangy, fruity and sweet. My husband had the stroopwafle icecream. It was also good, and came with a cute mini stroopwafle. I washed all this down with their Bier Distillery Lager and tried a flavored banket spirit. This restaurant originally was just a beer and specialty liquor spot. I love that they now serve food, because that was the highlight of our evening. I wish this establishment was closer to our home, but perhaps will come back when the weather is nicer to enjoy the outdoor patio. The Reuben sandwich was very good (husband had it) and up sized to fries which were also good. I had the pot roast sandwich with waffle chips. The sandwich was amazing (I added onions & gr peppers). The waffle fries were evidently the bottom of the bag because they were all small pieces which I couldn't even hold onto to dip in the French onion dip which I paid extra for. The wet burrito was very good (son in law had this). The pasta carbonara was not good (daughter had) and the garlic bread came with a large black hair across it.
