I rather enjoyed my visit here today, coming in with a seasoned guest, a friend that recommended we meet here. I chose a honey-cinnamon-almond croissant and a mocha, while she chose a cookie and some tea. The ordering process was warm and welcoming - a very nice man chatted with us about our day and other pleasantries. We sat down at a nice table in the middle of the bakery. It's quaint with interesting photography for sale, lining the room. My croissant was very good, although slightly dry. My mocha was also very good. My friend has said on several occasions that they have the best cookies. Parking seemed a little bit limited, although I did find a spot right up front right before the lunch rush. All in all, I can definitely say I'd like to come back to Russell's and try some of their sandwiches, soups and other pastries. Four stars! read more

I was running behind after a long weekend and needed to get a gluten free cake for my friends Birthday on short notice. After calling around with no luck I called Russell's Bakery. The man that answered was extremely helpful, he told me that they had a nine inch chocolate gluten free cake available but I was looking for a six inch chocolate cake. The man from Russell's told me that they could make a cake for me and have it ready by yesterday afternoon, not wanting to push my luck I asked if it was possible to have it decorated with some flowers and have my friends name written on the cake, he said it wouldn't be a problem and told me it would be available for when I arrived. When I arrived to pick up the cake I was really impressed with their decorating skills and their attention to detail! My friend and I we're amazed at how great the cake tasted and both agreed that it was probably the best chocolate cake either of us had ever had! Meh is about all I can give this place. The parking sitch is challenging, not enough spaces. Cute place, nice and clean, pretty display. I went in to pick up some sweets for me and a few friends to sample. Grabbed a key lime tart, a brownie and a couple of their iced longhorn cookies. The brownie was okay, the tart was not very flavorful and the cookies has the thinnest layer of icing I've ever seen on a cookie. The cookie was alright, but just wasn't up to my standards and especially for what I paid for all of it. I don't think I will go out of my way to go back, but it's good to know its there. read more

Excellent. The employees are super friendly and their coffee is tasty. They have quite the assortment of cakes, cookies, and pastries. I also got a look at a custom decorated cake another customer was picking up and it was gorgeous. They have soy and almond milk options and also sell coffee beans and nice reusable mugs. My mom had an art show here a while back. The Bakery has very nice natural lighting, changing art exhibits on the walls and some really awesome pastries. Parking can be a bit tricky, but the coffee is good and they have a cinnamon roll that is to die for! I mean life changing. One of my clients is a block away and it's always fun to stop by and grab a treat. Their staff is always nice and courteous and I hear their sandwiches are tasty too. That's it. We go to Russell's for coffee and cinnamon rolls on Saturday mornings. Their coffee is good but the cinnamon rolls are what we really come for. Not your typical cinnamon roll... more like a cinnamon sugar croissant-type pastry, but they are delicious. The Hancock location has very little atmosphere to it (minus 1 star), the one on Kerbey Lane is much better. I'm allotting two stars instead of one because the apology I received just now seemed heartfelt. This bakery needs a customer service system overhaul to keep customers from falling through the cracks. I went here in late July on a Sunday morning, waited in a ten minute line, and then put in a special order birthday cake for August. Shop local and all that jazz. I was told I would receive a return call the following day, since the type of cake I wanted, a saccre tort, isn't common. I received no return call nor email. A week went by without any contact. When I finally was able to get someone on the phone this afternoon to confirm that it would be ready tomorrow, I was told that she remembered by order being discussed, but no, that the order had not been accepted. The woman I spoke to, Amber, did apologize and stated that she would have called me to let me know if she had known that no one else had. That's something, I guess. read more

Key lime tart was pretty good. Might get it again. The whipped cream on top is not great but the custard is pretty good. They ran out of cinnamon rolls before we got there so be sure to try them next time. Get the chocolate croissant, their croissants are good. Russell's is good. Not great, but good. I went here mainly in search of an excellent blueberry muffin, having heard that they make some of the best right there. It was satisfying, but not at all what I'd hoped for. The muffin top was like a giant square block, and didn't have the crispy golden exterior I'm used to seeing on my favorite muffins elsewhere. It just looked unusual. Also not a fan of the crystallized sugar on top, which as I recall this place does. The blueberries were still juicy and pleasant though, and the inside was crumbly and sweet, so I was content for the moment. Also had a tuna sandwich that was unremarkable. Just a mediocre tuna sandwich really. When I went back craving another blueberry muffin, it was very dry and didn't taste as good. With several other excellent bakeries to choose from, I'm not sure how likely it is I'll go back to Russell's. Chances are they have some other baked goods that are worth trying though. read more

Hello, I love this bakery and every time I drive by it I look for it. I really love their sugar cookies. The problem for me I do not make a lot of money and I can never buy them. I know for some people they are at a good price but I am not a rich person. Don't get me wrong I am by no way saying they are doing anything bad, I just personally myself can not afford it sometimes. I went for elevensies yesterday with a dear friend and oh my god, just feed me cheddar scones for the rest of my life. But seriously, the place is gorgeous, the baristas very nice and the ambiance on the patio is great. Ordered a cake from this place and not only are their sweets delicious but their customer service is excellent! I specifically ordered "no pink" for the lettering on the cake but they used pink anyway. When I came in to pick up the cake, the manager noticed the mistake right away and apologized and gave me a huge discount for the mess up. OMG, I can't rave enough about their gluten free baked goods. The Harvest bread is my favorite (kind of like carrot cake with a twist), but the GF pumpkin bread and lemon poppy seed are amazing too. I pass this place everyday to pick up the kids I nanny for school. I stopped in one time, I plan on stopping in a lot more but the first time I wasn't sold. Things I would do for one of their Chocolate Indulgence: -Spit on an old woman -Scare a baby and make it cry -Trip a blind man OK, maybe I wouldn't do any of those things, but under the right circumstances I would consider it. The cinnamon roll was just ok but the cappuccino had so much foam in it that before I took a drink, I scooped out the foam and there are only half a cup of actual coffee in it. Best cinnamon rolls in town. They're not the kind covered with frosting. Just cinnamon and sugar (and probably lots of butter) rolled up in great dough. They're huge. I don't know why there aren't more people here on any given night of the week.. their chai tea latte is delicious - its not weak and extra milky like the other chai's I've ordered around town. The pastries look wonderful, but I haven't sampled all of them yet, so it is too early to tell. Their regular cappuccino's are very tasty too, so it isn't just the chai mix they use. As for the lack of patrons - I can only guess it is because they don't offer free wifi.. I don't require wifi with my coffee, and I'm GLAD that the place isn't overrun with students. I have been going to their Hancock location for years. The pastries are consistently awesome. I especially like their cupcakes. Chocolate or vanilla are great. The dessert they make called Chocolate Indulgence is truly one of the better chocolate desserts you can find. It stands about 5 inches high and is a chocolate covered, chocolate creme filled, crunchy-middle treat! I'll put this dessert up against any chocolate dessert, and I LOVE chocolate! I've had some of their breakfast pastries and I'm not as big a fan of those. In particular, their apple fritter. I appreciate their creativity since it's different than any other fritter I've had before, but it seems a lot closer to a scone than an apple fritter to me. Down the street from where I was working, this is a quick and easy place for lunch. Be forewarned it is a bit popular though. The number of tables available definitely is more than the number of cars the parking lot can hold. For the tortilla chips and tomato soup alone, I give four stars. The chips are the BEST I've ever had. They're fresh and light, better than any Mexican restaurant I've been to. I love eating the torilla chips and using the tomato soup as a dip. I am not a huge tomato soup fan, but it's creamy and not acidic here. It's probably the best tomato soup I've tasted. The sandwiches and salads could be better. When you get a chicken caesar salad, you actually receive slices of chicken instead of shredded/diced/cubed, which I found very strange. The tuna sandwich is very plain and doesn't have much in it. I wasn't impressed. I like sweet relish and celery in my tuna fish sandwich, but maybe that's just me. My coworker's on a gluten free diet, and the gluten free bread is terrible. It's really gummy and tasteless. I'd give two stars for the sandwiches and salads, while giving four stars for the chips and tomato soup for an average of three stars. You can easily get a soup, salad, and dessert at lunchtime for less than $15 (including tax and tip), which isn't too bad. The food is pretty quick, so it's not a bad lunch option! read more

I'm simply rating for the coffees. They are known for their bakery as per reviews from here, but I ordered a cafe Su lair, and it's slightly more milky than I expected; my friend ordered the freezer Java, which I also think it's slightly more milky as well. I love the openness in the cafe, and there is happy hours everyday. It's very clear, with paintings displayed for sale everywhere. I would leave 3.5 stars just for the coffee, too bad yelp won't let me. I will come back to try the bakery for another time. read more

I normally stop at Thom's Grocery on Barton Springs to get Tacodeli tacos for breakfast, but they were out this morning, so I got a cinnamon roll made by Russel's instead. It's really good!
