What a surprise this place is. We were passing through town, staying at a local hotel and pulled into the Rustic Oak. Honestly, we thought twice before going in as it is situated around a strip mall. We even thought about grabbing a drink and leaving when we sat at the bar, but Kia, the friendly bartender who was also balancing tables in the dining room was so kind, served drinks quickly and made us feel really welcome. The bar area is cozy and warm. I'm glad we stayed because the food, service and drinks were really good! I ordered the Rustic Oak Strip Steak and it did not disappointed. It was cooked exactly as I ordered and so tender. The baked potato was cooked to perfection (not a single piece of tough skin and served hot!). The green beans were unexpected in the best ways! This restaurant is located in the parking lot of a shopping center with a shared parking lot, right off Highway 61. We arrived on a Tuesday night and it was moderately busy. There were signs up that service was slow, so they set the expectations up front. They say the decor is rustic and that's accurate. Corrugated metal in the walls, antlers, farm equipment, etc. The entire place smells heavily of grease, so everything will need to air out when you leave. It was honestly very overwhelming and made me question our choice. Had the food not been good, I would probably not come back for that reason. The food was delicious and large portions. Very good tenderloin. The sweet potato fries were excellent as well. We split the huge sandwich and a Rustic salad. They were shortstaffed and busy, but service was pretty quick. This place was awesome. We started with a sampler try with fried pickles, cheese, corn nuggets, califlower and okra. It was all amazing. My friends ordered their catfish and man was it good. Perfectly fried and more than enough for two. I got an aged Riley with a delicious blue cheese sauce on top, baked potato that was perfection and a side salad. The staff was very welcoming and helpful. The owner, Melissa herself came to our table to meet us. We were in town for the 76th, all female, Honor Flight. Melissa was so generous in that she paid for those visiting from out of towns meal. The steak was so delicious. I could only eat half. Thank you all for such an amazing dinner. A sign at the front warns you that they are short-staffed, and the service was slow. But since I knew what to expect, that was no problem. In fact, when my kid dropped his burger on the floor after eating one bite, the waitress ordered another one up and got it back out to him very quickly (yes, I did say I would pay for a second). We liked the ambience, and something about the homey feeling gave me the impression that the dessert would be really good. We needed to get back on the road to Kansas City. I would come back here if I was anywhere near Hannibal just to get the buffalo chicken sandwich. My 8yo got it and barely finished it- I took a couple huge bites to help him out. The chicken was thick as heck and perfectly fried. The chicken was so tender that it was almost like fish. In fact, that's a good comparison - think of a big piece of fish from an amazing fish-and-chips and then picture almost a similar texture with chicken. Since I expected things to be slow, I ordered a bavarian pretzel as soon as we sat down. For our kid with an allergy, thankfully there was no egg. The two dips (nacho-cheese-looking queso and "beer" cheese) were not very good but the kids liked them. I got the rustic salad. I'm a big dude, and the lunch portion was plenty. The chicken was fried just about perfectly. I think croutons didn't make sense with the existing crisp of the fried chicken, and I eventually realized I could just skip eating them. Also, the "mixed greens" consisted mainly of mixing together heads of iceberg lettuce. I would have paid extra to avoid the iceberg; I wonder if that's something I could ask for as an extra charge without being a jerk. My daughter loves potatoes, so she ordered the amardillo tails appetizer; dang, that is a full-on adult meal. It's at least two large potatoes cut into wedges, deep-fried, lined up and covered in barbecue sauce with some pulled pork on top. She wisely ordered the queso on the side - the queso went well with the wedges, but it didn't need to be drenching everything. My wife got the chicken salad on a croissant; the croissant was uninspired - I think it must have been frozen and microwaved. But still not a bad sandwich. read more

I've had lunch and the (Friday night) all-you-can-eat catfish dinner here in the past and found the food to be quite tasty and service quick but unobtrusive. However, on the most recent occasion to have dinner here, I was served the skimpiest, most tasteless Reuben Sandwich I have ever experienced! There were two slices of shaved meat, (which I wasn't convinced was corned beef), a slice of Swiss cheese, and slight flavor of sauerkraut on marbled rye bread. The sandwich had been mashed down while on the grill, so it was very thin and "floppy." Needless to say, I was not happy with this experience. On the other hand, Lea had the Sirloin Tips special which was cooked in red wine with a generous serving of mushrooms, and was quite delicious. She generously let me have a couple of bites, but didn't care for a bite of my sandwich. I don't wonder why. I'm knocking them down a star from my previous postings, and hope they can earn that star back in future visits. read more

We showed up here about an hour after the restaurant opened. We waited about 45 minutes for a table but never got seated. We finally decided to leave and go somewhere else as there was another family of three ahead of us that had been waiting even longer. Nobody was getting seated and people inside the restaurant weren't being helped. The staff was walking around acting like they had no idea what they were doing or what they were supposed to be doing. I didn't actually eat there, but yelp refuses to clear my notifications until I write a review. So here goes. This place is a place to eat. It has drinks and it has food. The food is like most food as it contains protein, fats, and carbohydrates. The drinks are water based. Even the soda is nothing more than syrup diluted with carbonated water. I'm reasonably certain that the beer contains alcohol but as i haven't eaten (nor imbibed) there, i cannot be completely certain. What can I say about the service?? Not very much it turns out as, like I said, I haven't actually eaten there. And don't get me started about the prices. It's possible that it's really expensive. Not good. Had a tenderloin and asked to split it. Charged 3 dollars to split which is fine but then when the food came they had cut the bun in half along with all the toppings. Super great meal. I had the aged ribeye and it was perfect. The cook and seasoning on it is the best in Hannibal. The sides were good but that steak was a star, fork tender and juicy. I will be making this a regular when I am in Hannibal each month. I cannot wait to try more items on their menu, but prying me away from that steak may be difficult. Now, the service is what put this over the top. Extremely nice and friendly staff who are eager to make sure you are taken care of while you are here. We stopped in at the Rustic Oak on the way back from a business trip. We were looking for a good steak, and the reviews said that this was a pretty good place to go; wow, were they right! It's a pretty unassuming place at the end of a strip mall, but don't let that fool you. When you walk in, you're greeted by a display of sweets, including pastries, cakes, pies, and fudge. The decor is more lodge-based, but it varies a bit. One wall is nautical, but the majority is lodge-rustic-outdoors. Yes, you're going to see some deer mounts. The drink selection is pretty expansive, with domestic offshoots that I've never even heard of, and I like my beer. The menu primarily revolves around aged steaks. I had an aged KC Strip seared in a Makers Mark sauce. You know that sensation when you roll a piece of steak between your tongue and the roof of your mouth and it feels like melting butter? Yeah, that was this steak. Wow, was it good. It was cooked to perfection, the taste was otherworldly, and the presentation was good. I live in Iowa and grew up a cattle farmer. I'd still put this in my top 3 steaks I've ever had. The sides were good, as well, but they paled in comparison to that steak. I didn't try any of the sweets, but I'm willing to venture that they're outstanding. If you're in the area, traveling through, or feel like making a trip for an outstanding steak, go here. I had fried chicken, baked potato soup and the salad bar. I regretted choosing the soup over mashed potatoes because I like really hot soup, especially if it's a thick, creamy soup and this was served closer to room temperature. The fried chicken was good.
