Not safe for Celiacs. We were traveling through Hannibal and selected this restaurant as they have a Gluten Free menu. I spoke to our server and explained why I needed to order gluten free and asked about the food prep. I ordered the gluten free chicken club with baked waffle fries. Unfortunately there was cross contamination and I've been sick for 5 days. This started about 12 hours later, well after we left the restaurant. What a pleasant surprise. We were traveling and the name just caught my eye. We went in for lunch... a little skeptical because there didnt seem to be many cars outside and inside only a few tables of diners. After checking out their "lunch bars" we opted to order from the menu. My husband ordered the horse shoe open face burger and i opted for the french dip wrap. What an excellent decision. Hot, fresh and very tasty. Ample portions for the hungariest traveler. The servers were friendly and attentive without being intrusive. I am so sad I can't give them 5 stars because the waitress was great and most of the food was really good like the fried green beans and homemade ranch dressing, sweet potato fries, and nice sized side salads. I had tons of shrimp in my pasta but unfortunately the pasta was overlooked and left undrained that watered down the under seasoned Alfredo sauce. We also ordered the king 1 lb prime rib but looked more like ribeye. Wouldn't give up on them yet we would try them again. read more

Outstanding, friendly service. I had an open-faced roast beef plate and hubby had a spicy buffalo chicken sandwich with steak fries. Both meals were pretty good. The fries were more like large wedges with seasonings and were very good. Shared a slice of delicious coconut cream pie for dessert and took home some fudge for later (we're not from the area, and could not pass it up). The only somewhat negative thing I could say is their wall decor was very noticeably dusty. This seems to be a common occurrence in small mom & pop places. Our 3rd visit here since it opened few years ago. Not excited the first two times. This time was quite more enjoyable. However we requested ground beef on the nachos instead of shredded beef.... No seasoning added to the ground beef. We won't order those again not just bc the meat but the cheese wasn't done right and there wasn't enough "stuff" on the nachos like we prefer. DON'T EAT HERE. EVER. I am not one to send food back, never mind send it back twice! I cannot remember the last time I was so repulsed... the last time I had such a disgusting dinner and service experience. I wish I could post a picture here of my 'prime rib' dinner. It was very thin, heavily gristled and extremely overcooked; so I sent it back. The next one was the color of boiled meat, and as cold as if it had come directly from the refrigerator... very off-putting, to say the least! When the waitress, accompanied by the manager, brought my plate back the original piece of meat was on the plate, with the same knife slice I had made in it to confirm how overcooked it was to begin with! I confronted the manager about it; she denied it claiming that she had sliced it in the kitchen to check the doneness. Right. Even if that were true, which it was not, restaurants are not supposed to slice halfway across your meat before bringing it to the table. At any rate, it was still barely warm. It still looked boiled. It was still completely full of gristle. The baked potato was close to room temperature, too cool to affect the pat of butter I applied to it. The green beans seemed to have been plated directly from a tin with no heat ever having been applied to them. DON'T EAT HERE... EVER. read more

A diamond in the rough, if I hadn't of seen this place in Yelp while traveling I wouldn't of known it was there. It's in a shopping strip mall with no sign and the windows are all very dark so was difficult to tell if it was open. Was very pleased to try this restaurant and will definitely be returning. Large menu, very clean, full bar, friendly staff, on top of the large menu they also have a large dessert menu. Waitress also told me that they do a lot of catering and I was impressed with The taste of my food. I was traveling with my mother and we got there rustic oak salad and a spinach salad with blue cheese dried cranberries and a warm bacon dressing that was absolutely delicious we also got a Montecristo sandwich with ham Swiss cheese and a raspberry jam battered in a unsweetened funnel cake batter and fried, the sandwich was amazing and enough for three people. Mom and I split the sandwich as well as the salad and each got a piece of dessert to go. This is a new location for the Rustic Oak Cabin. They used to be located out at Mark Twain Landing (where the mini-golf is, across from the Mark Twain Cave park area.) This new location is in the JC Penney/Sears/Durham's strip mall. While we like the setting and interior better than the one on the river in some ways, we do miss being able to eat outside along the Mississippi. But we don't go here anymore, and it's not because of the missing view. The food at the previous location was "usually" pretty good. There were a few mishaps, but they took care of them politely, even if not quickly. But they've lost the recipe for success with their move to this strip mall location (a redone Ponderosa that has been home to three other failed restaurants in the last 4 years.) They used to serve deep fried green beans that were a really nice, generous serving. Not so anymore. The serving size is down by at least 50% and they were limp and lifeless. The food for all our entrees was very disappointing, and we ended up leaving without eating on our first visit not long after they opened last year (2013). We tried again, but this time, the service was really bad. After 10 minutes waiting, we didn't even have water or a word from a server and they were not busy. When we got up to leave, the hostess had no idea we had just been seated 10 minutes before, and SHE had been the one to seat us. You'd think she could keep track of less than 14 people in the restaurant and see if they looked happy or not. But she was too busy chatting up the bartender. Maybe they have gotten the kinks worked out at this new location, but I doubt it. The parking lot is never full at lunch or dinner. That tells me they have lost a good portion of their local following. Give it a try, but don't hold your breath for anything but mediocre at best. read more

Not what I hoped for. I'll start with the staff; they were very friendly and the service was great but we didn't come for the service. We went on a Friday night which is all you can eat catfish night. It's served of a buffet and there's a small variety of side dishes to choose from to go along with your catfish: fried okra, fried potatoes, mashed potatoes, white gravy, green beans, turnip greens, and baked beans. The catfish was awful and dry. Likewise, the okra was horrible and extremely dry. Everything else was average. You could tell that it had been sitting on the buffet for a long time. I have read the reviews only because this is my favorite restaurant. Great aged steaks, seafood, pasta, martini's, homemade fudge! Great friendly service. I, however did find a problem with Leah R. Review. No one would yell at a customer there....the staff is almost too friendly. She would never have asked for a refund at the table because you pay at the front desk, not the table. The rustic oak literally had the worst service I have ever experienced. Me and my brother had ordered the meal that was completely burnt the we told the waiter that we would like to have a new one. She then yelled at us and told us that "all the people in the restaurant were fine with it" and I was like "well I'm sorry but I'm not all the other people in the restaurant so just for that comment I'm want a refund and I'm leaving" she then yelled at me again and I was just like okay I'm going to go talk to the people at the front desk so I go over there and after like 30 minutes of talking they give us a refund for everything we ordered and I will never come back to this restaurant again it was frankly ridiculous and I don't know how anybody would like the food because all the other people that I was with had disgusting food to. Poor service and very poor food. Made reservations for 6pm for prime rib dinners. Arrived an hour early for cocktails at the bar which basically had no bartender. We were served two completely different pieces of prime rib, one looked good and mine looked like it was picked out of the waste tray. I sent it back and was brought another that looked worse than the previous one. The woman who said she was the owner argued with me that the first two were served from the last roast and this one was served from a new one. There were hardly any customers there so it must have been from yesterdays roast and this new piece from todays roast which was absolutely not close to a 17.99 (approx. price) piece of meat. My friend eventually asked for a to go box because this woman only wanted to argue and not bring me a good piece of meat. We left and my friends meal was a waste as it sat in thee fridge at the hotel over night. read more

Had lunch there this afternoon (10/21/2017). We were from out of town, there for the 41st annual folklore festival. Enjoyed that, good quality arts and crafts. At the restaurant our waitress was Katie, she was fantastic. Went above and beyond to answer all our menu questions and knew the menu well. She helped us with directions and was very thoughtful and friendly. The food was really good. We travel a lot and try new restaurants. I tried the tenderloin, very tasty, My son had the 1/2 pound burger. Probably the star of the food we had. My wife had the horseshoe and enjoyed it. We also had their boneless wings. Could use to be crispier but were really good. All in all when we come back to Hannibal we will definitely be back. Go Katie you are awesome. read more

My husband and stepdaughter and I ate at Rustic oaks Friday. My step daughter ordered the garlic Alfredo and my husband ordered the 1\2 pound burger with cheese and onion and pickle and lettuce and tomato and bacon and french fries and I had the catfish buffet.The food was great and they gave us so much that My daughter had enough of her dinner for three meals and my husband could barely finish his sandwich. There was so much to choose from!! a huge menu and the people beside me had the steak that was a special that night. Those steaks look delicious!! I had the best catfish and the mashed potatoes were delicious and I had a huge salad with everything imaginable on it and I ate 5 catfish fillets and baked beans and a really good cornbread muffin. we also had the desert which my Stepdaughter had the coconut cream pie and my husband and I had the lemon merangue pie and it was all fabulous! They had a huge desert menu including cobblers and fudge of a large variety. It was hard to choose. They have a huge drink menu also of alcohol beverages but we don't drink. They were very fast and super friendly and even the manager came and asked us how our meal was. We ate sooooo much. I wanted to eat there for quite a while but was told by others it was expensive. We went in and it was just as much as going to Golden Corral but MUCH better food. The catfish was scrumptious. It was supper fresh and REALLY hot and cooked to perfection in a corn meal crust which I LOVED!! I want to go back and get the catfish again or maybe the steak. We walked away fully satisfied and left the restaurant with a happy and pleasant experience. I want to try the cobbler next or chocolate merangue pie.There was sooo much to choose from! They even had frog legs on the menu! I haven't had them since I was a kid.They were packed the night we went about 7 pm and there was a reason why.The food and service was awesome!! I have lived in Hannibal for 26 years and I have been to many of Hannibal's restaurants. This one I will be back to again.So long Golden Corral.
