Rusty's is awesome!! Been coming here for years and have always been happy. Rusty is super honest and informative. I once paid for a $200 out of area tow to Rusty's rather than get my car towed to a closer mechanic for free; that how good and trustworthy he is! Only went to Rusty's because I thought I needed a front end alignment, I also asked for a oil change. I get a call a few hours later from Rusty telling me I needed a left and right control arms replace, air filter and radiator cap, I was given a price over $800 plus dollars in work. I declined the work and went to my own mechanic who has a automotive shop in another city. He called me and told me he would charge me around $550 to replace the lower control arms and do the alignment. Sorry Rusty....Times are tough and I don't mind paying for work performed, but if you want to keep a customer you really need to lower your prices. read more

I have been doing business with Rusty since 1986 and going back to when he worked for his Dad at Okimoto's Automotive. While at Okimoto's Rusty didn't just work there, he WAS Okimoto's. Not to disparage the fine mechanics they had working there, but Rusty was just totally on top of everything there and did an amazing job of "keeping all the balls in the air" if you will. History aside, Rusty now has his own shop and the tradition of exceptionally high quality service continues under his watch. He has successfully recruited high quality mechanics and staff (Carlos), and is as honest as the day is long. Rusty knows everything about every car as though he is the one doing the work himself. If you hang out in the office long enough you will watch him discuss each car in great detail as he answers questions. He's an amazing guy. I could tell you a variety of anecdotal stories of his excellence, but after 26 years of working with Rusty it is just plain expected and the norm. Bring your sick car in for help and I guarantee Rusty's gang will treat you right and get the job done quickly. They are also open for a 1/2 day on Saturdays too. First off, I know nothing about cars. This fact alone makes it difficult to find a mechanic that I feel comfortable giving non-technical descriptions of my car issues (complete with sound effects) to, and that can explain to me what is going on with my car in layman's terms without getting exasperated at my ignorance. Lucky for me, AAA led me to Rusty's and now I have a mechanic I can trust. Rusty never tries to get me to do anything unnecessary, and when I bring in my car with an issue and a repair is needed, he personally calls and walks me through why and what he needs to do before he does anything. And, it's always up to me to decide whether or not to give the go-ahead. The prices are very fair and the customer service is top-notch. The shop is very busy, so it's always good to call first to see if they can fit you in. read more

My mother went to Rusty's for years and since her health declined she couldn't drive any longer so he lost her as a customer. Then one day my left tail light was out. I didn't want to be pulled over by the po po so I decided to go to Rusty's since my mom was a faithful customer. I asked him how much and how long would it take to fix my tail light, he said $13 and how about now!!! I told him, it's a deal so he did it and I was on my way...driving reckless and illegal as always. I am now his new loyal customer. Finally found a great repair facility. I've always worked on my own cars but getting lazy so a friend (female) recommended Rusty's. They have very reasonable prices and do an excellent job. I was compelled to write this review due to the one star given by HP. I simply cannot agree with her rating. I would not trust what her Dad's mechanic said. Then again, it depends on what her car make, year and miles driven. Six months is a long time not checking the fluids especially considering she is from Glendale and Rusty's is in Norwalk (assuming she drives a lot of miles). By the way, I especially don't like to take my cars to the dealer, even when it's warranty work. I always look over their work after I get my car back and many times than not, they don't do the work correctly (mostly small things, but bugs me). The number one error that mechanics make is over torqueing the wheel lug nuts and the oil drain plug. Also, the oil filter; the manufacturer's procedure is to hand tighten the filter 3/4 turns after the gasket touches the engine block, they almost always overtighten it with a filter wrench. As Rachel comments, Rusty's is AAA top rated shop with very few complaints according to AAA. read more

I must say that these cats didn't get 5 stars for doing my work, because they didn't. However, not because they didn't want to but instead because I had came by their request to diagnose an issue with my girl friends car. They were actually closing for the day. The job that needed done would've taken days -- Not only was Carlos an amazing guy to talk to but very honest and informative who also referred me to another honest shop that day who is now handling the job. Best mechanic ever!!!!! Ive been going to rustys since the DMV thought it was a good idea to let me drive. Ive had many cars and rusty has fixed all of them.. lol...from my first car turbo 87 civic hatch, which exploded and rusty fixed,a 2000 superchared civic coup. lots of little maintanece due to my heavy foot. my 64 lincoln continental to my current beast 05 ford excursion. Rusty does great work, keeps you up to date with scheduled and routine maintanece but never forces the issue, has reasonalble pricing, stands by his work and most important....HONEST... I've tried other places and have unfortunately been taken for a ride...only having to take the car to rusyts to have what i payed for fixed by him and his expert staff... Very professional, friendly, honest and detail oriented. Had a steering problem and told me nothing was wrong with the steering just need to have the tires rebalanced because the people that installed my tires didn't do a good job. Also paid a fraction to do a simple fix on my air conditioning by recommending me to fill up the freon instead of trying to do a entire overhaul since the leak was minimal. My family has been taking their cars here for years. It's 20 min from my house so I've been going to the dealer but lately it seems like the dealer is just trying to find things to charge me for. It's recommended on one visit but not even listed as a task on the next. My car is 10 years old. I was sure it needed work but need to go to a trustworthy place. So, I finally took my car to Rusty to find what really needed to get done. I rattled off a few items I thought may be needed. Rusty was quick to say I might not need these things done and his team would give my car a good look over with the oil change I requested. Sure enough he found most items we not needed and have gave me his recommendations. His prices we significantly lower than the dealer. He didn't try to make a quick buck. He told me things I could look at doing later but didn't need now. Totally worth the drive! When I paid, without being asked, he even sanitized my credit card before giving it back to me. I felt very taken care of. His shop is by appointment only, so don't forget to call ahead. I had a two day wait for a time slot but my family has had to wait a week when it's been busy. Great place to go if you want the feel invisible. Clearly they have enough business to just not want new customers. You get better service at a graveyard. I must have stood in front of the guy for fifteen min as he chatted on the phone and his mute secretary stared blankly at her monitor not five feet away. They literally have a sign up saying "no appointments for new customers". Now generally I hate to say anything bad toward someone on account of karma but: Go fuck yourself rusty. It is going to sound like I work for this guy or like I am from one of those "marketing firms" companies hire to boost their yelp ratings but I'm just a local who loves good customer service and competent work. That being said, Rusty is knowledgeable and trustworthy when it comes to fixing and maintaining automobiles. I went for a transmission flush today and we had a great conversation about auto shops, customers, and his pop's shop (Okimoto's). He said he cares about his loyal customers and their needs, he's not in it for your cash, he undersold all the other places that tried to over charged me and got it done fast. He sometimes has to direct some customers to other shops because he gets too many, or sometimes it's because the work isn't worth the car it's being done on. This guy is all about honesty. I really enjoy doing business with people like him. I am definitely going back. BTW, CALL AHEAD, they book a week in advance. read more

wow. truly as good as it gets. It's all true people. I went to Rusty's after reading the last 4 reviews on Yelp. I've needed 2 things done in particular. I made an appointment (about 3 days before is the going rate), and when I rolled in 10 past 7 AM, they were ready. Upon checking in my car, I asked that the mechanics also look at an issue I've been having where my car cranks but does not start immediately when it's hot. Approximately 4 hours later, I get a call from Rusty himself. He told me that my battery was weak and I should replace it. Funny, because I've been to 4 other places, and everywhere else (including AAA, Pep Boys, and 2 car dealers) told me it was fine or nothing about it. I've been to the dealer to have this problem fixed, and had 2 parts replaced, but the problem wasn't 100% gone. When Rusty's crew touched it, they found that my battery was bad AND screwed in improperly, which may contribute to my crank-but-no-start problem. AND he was able to explain all of this to me in plain English. With regard to price, I found that Rusty's is at the ceiling the lower end. BUT, considering that I got 3 things done for the same price my local car dealer quoted me for getting one of the things done, I have nothing to complain about. Great, prompt service. Extreme Low-Ballers whenever you're talking about salvage pickups! Whatever you're reading that's "great" must be from family and friends. Worst thing ever is...I see there promotion now everywhere I go. I HATE THIS!!!! You can almost SURELY expect the same if you deal with them. Even the motor is worth $1,000. Even their insurance offered me $400. Rusty offered $250!!! Horrible...I hope they rot on their filthy lucre! read more

Rusty's is reliable, dependable, and most importantly HONEST! I feel like I'm always getting a fair deal whenever I've taken my car in. I needed to have my transmission replaced a few months ago, and the price they quoted was well below the price quoted by the dealer, and I haven't had any problems with my car since getting it back! The only thing I don't love is that they aren't open on the weekends, which is when it's most convenient for me to take my car in for routine maintenance. But, if I need any sort of repair work done, I'm more than willing to take the time off of work during the week to take my car to Rusty's - it's worth it! read more

I love Rusty's auto shop. They are trustworthy and honest people. I go to the dealership once in a while only because it's so close to my workplace, but I regret going every time. The dealers hike up prices tremendously and they add in repairs or services that are unnecessary - they are so shady. Rusty's Auto is honest and will tell me if a repair is really necessary. It's just a different and positive vibe when you walk into rusty's - a mom and pop shop with good quality service. I wish they had another auto shop in the Irvine area. :) however, it is worth the drive from irvine to Norwalk to get my car serviced here! Good businesses like Rusty's Auto are golden! read more

Turns out my old mechanic just took me for my money and didn't do the repairs on my car as he should have. I love Rusty's. My entire family and I have been going there for years. The guy is super honest and does good work. He explains in detail what needs to be done and you leave feeling you were taken good care of instead of taken advantage of like in most shady repair shops. I have a Toyota Sienna and the passenger sunshade needed to be replaced. The dealer was going to charge me an arm and a leg; Rusty's replaced it for a nominal fee! Same with programming a new key. If you want an honest mechanic who knows his stuff look no further!! I would not take my car anywhere else and neither will my family. My whole family (grandparents, parents, aunts, sibling, etc) has been going to Rusty since he worked at his family's garage "Okimoto's" and gladly followed him when he moved to open his own shop near the Norwalk Swapmeet. Don't be put off by the outside or the location. His shop isn't fancy looking or inviting, or in necessarily a "pretty part of Norwalk" but he does have a pleasant waiting room for customers and with such good service, who cares what it looks like on the outside!! Rusty's prices are fair and he doesn't try to sell you bs that you do not need. Case an point: I needed an oil change and a smog check and talked to Rusty about possibly getting a tune up or spark plugs checked etc as well. Rusty's response was "well let's wait and see if your car passes the smog test on its own first, because you may not even need a tune up." My car passed and I was out of there paying for only the oil and smog instead of hundreds of dollars for tune up services I didn't even need. It's so refreshing to have someone who is honest and values his customers and their needs when he could just be making easy money off people who know nothing about cars. Visit Rusty!
