Every time I have gone I have had great service. They have really good ice cream but sometimes the sizes can be inconsistent. I suppose that is to be expected at any ice cream place. Firewood and bagged ice prices are higher than the state park campground next door which I was disappointed to see. Overall I love their ice cream and service. read more

This place has the lockdown on the local ice cream market. Ruth Ann's sits, literally, on the edge of the Muskegon State park campgrounds. You know who goes camping a lot? Families! And what are families made of? Snotty-nosed children...and you know what those little snotty-nosed kids love? Ice Cream, of course! This place has a captive audience, and it totally takes advantage of it! Two cones with a scoop of Ashby's ice cream...7+ dollars! Wha?? The ice cream totally hit the spot, even though it made my wallet feel much lighter. Otherwise the staff was cool, the location is remote. The actual ice cream stand is cute, with picnic tables and little (overpriced) kiosk to the side with candy and toys. I'm not completely impressed, but its a-ok with me when I'm camping next door. read more

We'd like to start by saying that we return to Muskegon every summer, 80% for the high-quality ice cream we get to have at local Ruth Ann's ice cream shop. Each summer we await their ice cream with the hopes that the employees will greet us with the amount of joy we bring to Ruth Ann's, however we stay feeling thoroughly disappointed and shocked by the customer service. They are rude and do not allow any amount of samples, and look at you confused when you ask simple questions about the small menu they offer. Additionally, we attempted to sample a pup-cup for our dog, but they appeared even more confused and denied our request. Overall never satisfied at this establishement, yet we will be back tomorrow for more. read more

The Northside area is overrun with ice cream places, but none of them really hold a candle to Ruth Ann's if you want interesting flavors and good atmosphere. RA's serves Ashby's brand ice cream, which is a Michigan-based ice cream distributor that tastes even better than the oft-lauded Hudsonville brand that is also local. Flavors rotate, but Amaretto Cherry, Tennessee Toffee and Eskimo Kisses are usually available and are worth a shot, even for the less-than-adventurous. With their scoop flavors is a standard ice cream stand menu with shakes and more, with a few surprises - the Espresso Shake is top notch, their specialty flurries have some interesting flavors you wouldn't find elsewhere, and their frozen chocolate-covered bananas are great if you're looking for something light and healthier. Ruth Ann's is a walk-up stand, and its seating is outdoors. This is a big plus for days with good weather, because you can walk through the state park campground for free and go to the beach (great for dates!) The shop has more than just ice cream, including a pretty good chili dog and walking taco and delicious pork BBQ sandwiches that I think are actually worth the slightly high price tag. And that being said, let's talk coin: prices seem on the high side. It makes sense that they might be - the secluded location probably raises their operating costs, and Ashby's probably carries a super-premium price tag to go with its super-premium quality. Other things to note: On weekend evenings lines can get long, and expect to have to park on the street on busy nights because the lot is small. Lastly, if you're looking for soft serve variety, you won't find it here - only chocolate, vanilla and twist. Scoop flavors are their specialty. read more

I can't say anything about the food but the owner was incredibly rude when we asked if we could park in her lot for 3 minutes to cheer on a friend running a race. Her answer...."You can park over there. (Across the street not on her property) Just back out." Really? The store was closed. read more

I ordered the hot fudge cream puff. The pastry light and flaky. The ice cream was very delicious. There wasn't much got fudge and the whip cream was not anything to write about. Tip for young kids. The ice cream is delicious but a business isn't worth going to if the customer service is bad. I went to get ice cream with my brother and he ordered the same sundae he's ordered before. The last time he asked for it without nuts because he's allergic. The employee told him it didn't come with nuts. This time he ordered it and didn't customize it. It comes out covered in pecans. He brought it back to the window to say he couldn't have it because of an allergy. The, who we think, was the owner said "sorry, I don't know what to do for you." He explained last time he had ordered it the employee had stated it didn't have nuts. She replied "yeah, well we changed that one. That's what the board is for." He had to pay for a new one! He spent $13 on a sundae he could have. I've worked in customer service for 15 years and I'm disgusted at the lack of customer service provided. Stopped at Ruth Ann's twice during a camping trip. The location is great as it's right next door to Muskegon State Park campgrounds-walking distance from tents and the beach. The first time we arrived a few minutes before closing. Watch out- they close at 9:45....which is an unusual time to close. Although I will give them slack from for just being teenagers they weren't exactly pleased to serve us. After we paid 4+ dollars for our single cones one of the workers turned off the outside lights while we were waiting for our last cone. Had to wait for our ice cream in the dark!! Another thing was inconstant scoops. We all ordered the single scoops although some came out with what seemed like double the amount of ice cream?? Although the prices and service weren't jaw dropping the ice cream was yummy. Lots of flavors to choose from if you're getting hand scooped. The place is super cute with outdoor seating and creative menu/decorations. The menu is a bit pricey and for a hand scooped shake they only offer one size, and it's over $7.00!! Overall this place is alright- but if there were other options around there we'd get our ice cream some where else. read more
