Today I experienced one of the best salon visits I've ever had! I walked in and was instantly greeted by a very nice young woman who immediately paired me with a stylist whose name was Amy. What a delight she was as we discussed what I wanted done to my hair. She was very professional, patient and sensitive to all my requests. I had an incredibly divine sugar scrub applied to my scalp followed by a sparkling water rinse! Then Amy gave me the most wonderful scalp, neck and shoulder massage. I was relaxed and refreshed when I got back into the salon chair for my haircut. Amy skillfully and quickly snipped away at my hip length hair shaping and contouring my shaggy mane into a sculptured hairdo mid back. My bangs were cut perfectly and can now be either worn down or side swept. Amy then curled my hair into full voluminous waves! I looked 20 years younger when she was done! Seriously! I can't express how extremely pleased I am with Amy and the whole Ryanjacobie staff. This salon is truly a fantastic find and one I will be sure to frequent in the future. If there was an option to give them 10 stars i would. This is by far, the most incredible salon ever. Davey transformed my look from bland to sheek and elegant. The skill was 110%; not to mention the entire staff has excellent customer service and were all professional.They made me feel at home. Many may find $50-100 too much to spend for a visit at a salon, but there is so much value throughout the entire experience that all seems priceless. WOOOOH! I love Ryanjacobie! Went back this past Chinese New Year's weekend to change up the hair (very urgently, as I was alarmingly told it would be the WORST YEAR EVER if I got my hair cut on CNY), and just like before, I left over-the-moon at the service I received! I called a few days in advance to book my appointment with Kylie, who had cut my hair during my first visit. She ended up being the one to answer the phone, and I was able to secure an appointment with her with no issues - she did make sure to let me know that her cuts have gone up in price (from $35 to $45), which was very much appreciated! My previous experience with her made the price change no problem; I was happy to hear that her hard work was being acknowledged! Got there, and after a short wait I was offered a beverage by this really sweet guy, (forget your name, Sweet Guy! :/) who would also be doing my shampoo and scalp massage. Once again, I can't complain one bit about the shampoo/massage; it was super duper. When it came time for the cut, I explained that I wanted to grow my hair out again, but wanted to try bangs. I expressed my concerns about length, since my hair is curly, and used the term "Forehead Mustache" to show how terrified I actually was, and once again Kylie made me feel reassured that she would not, in fact, give me a Forehead Mustache, and that all would be well. A short while later, my cut was finished. I was, again, asked how I wanted my hair styled (yay), and I ended up asking her to do whatever she thought would be best. She blow dryed my hair, and flat ironed it super straight - I freakin loved it, and can't wait for my next hair-venture at Ryanjacobie! The salon is located on Smith Street in Chinatown, and metered parking is available as well in the lot directly across from the salon, or in the structure on the same street. I was a little skeptical when I bought a groupon for a cut and a sugar scrub for $35 but I figured what the heck? Live dangerously! Well I am happy that I am such a daredevil! I initially booked an appointment a month ago and got sick, and being an advocate for staying HOME when you are sick, I called them to reschedule. The receptionist was SO understanding! I was impressed. No attitude. No sassiness. Just genuine concern for my sneezy ol self and wishes for a speedy recovery. I had a pretty easy time rescheduling the appointment. Not so easy that I was worried whether they really had customers but not so difficult that I had to wait months for a stylist to lay their hands on my locks. I am embarrassed to say that I can not remember my stylists name but nonetheless he was good at what he did and friendly to boot! The massage and sugar scrub was divine! How can you NOT love a salon that rinses your hair with Pellegrino? Come on now people...I can't afford to DRINK it and these people wash your hair with it! Nice! The salon is a tad small and parking is at a premium if you go when chinatown is hustling and bustling. I recommend Sunday morning. New look for the New Year! I am very pleased with my hair cut and finally finding a hair stylist I can trust. I've been spoiled for years for having a cousin who is a cosmetologist. She had been doing my hair for years! A friend suggested I go to RyanJacobie for my next hair cut since she was happy with her hair cut from Davey. I purchased a $35 Groupon, which included deep conditioner/sugar scrub, shampoo, and cut. The sugar scrub alone is $35 and a cut by Kylie is $35. Kylie was super nice and did a great job. She listened to what I had to say and made suggestions. My hair is super straight and flat, but somehow she was able to give my hair volume and layered my bangs a certain way where it isn't falling flat on my face! I'm satisfied! This salon was awesome!!! I took a couple of girlfriends here to get pampered and we got glammed up to the tenth power! The stylists were so friendly and made us feel so comfortable we were all right at home cracking up with each other. This is such a professional salon at a very agreeable price considering I got a shampoo/amazing scalp massage, cut, and style! I have very thick straight hair and my girl Kylie knew exactly what I was looking for and hooked me up! She styled my difficult hair so easily with a Paul Mitchell Express Ion Smooth Iron that usually goes for $180 and was $99.95 on sale so I bought it and recreated the style at home as easily as Kylie did. I almost always get my hair cut at this place from Dina, but I'm taking a surprise trip to Vegas for my birthday tomorrow, and thought, "today is the day to do something dramatic!" Dina wasn't working (sorry if I'm misspelling your name!) so I booked an appointment with Ashley, whose name I saw on another review. She's adorable! She also wouldn't let me leave until I was totally satisfied with my look. It took a bit longer than I was expecting because I had to ask her to make it juts a bit shorter so she had to go back and adjust all my length again, but a trip to the salon is a luxury and it's my own fault for not allowing myself enough time to relax. My satisfaction was her only concern and I appreciate it! I went from having hair past my shoulder blades to a long in front, and above the neck in the back. I love it! I might go for something even shorter next time, but I left satisfied--and such the dramatic change I was looking for for under $40! BTW: That head massage. Oh my G. Worth every minute. Plus, everyone everyone that works here is fantastic. Great business model, great stylists, great people. I think the only downside, which is also a plus side depending on your attitude, is the stylists (based on just my experience with the two) tend to lean on the safe side--only willing to give you a cut they're comfortable with. At RJS, it's not just about a hair cut, it's about the experience! After slaving at my job for 40+hours a week, 5 days straight and then working most weekends doing events I can get a little stressed! So once a month I go to RJS to treat myself to a haircut which I need, but more so indulge in the massage, tea tree treatment and towel wrap that comes before it! The ambiance is very nice and the people there are super fun to chill with! The cut does take time so try not to be in a hurry when you get here because the last thing you want to do is short change yourself on any of the glorious things this place has to offer! I first started coming here around 4 months ago when I couldn't get a booking with my normal stylist. Not their fault or anything, I just kept getting sick when my appointment would come up and then it would take a month to try and reschedule because he's super busy and my schedule is always crazy as well. With RJS it was just call, book and come in! Super easy! The past 4 cuts was me noticing that it's getting moppy, I call and then I'm there same day! This past cut I decided to actually schedule my next one so I can be a little bit more on point, organized and scheduled like I should be! The parking for RJS is in the Marin Tower next door, it's pretty cheap but they do not take card in the garage so make sure you got a couple of dollars to catch the parking. My time in the garage usually costs about $2.00 which is nothing when you're talking about parking in downtown! After a massive pay cut this new year, I'm feeling depressed and the need to cut down on my modest ways of living. My friend recommended me to go to her new fav hairstylist Kylie at RyanJacobie, as she is reasonably priced. I was excited but yet skeptical, but heck, I can use the extra savings. So I scheduled the appointment during a weekday on my lunch hour. First impression of the salon: it's small but clean and cozy. The receptionist was really nice (which is pretty rare in snobby highend salons), and another stylist was also really friendly and complimented on my bag and outfit! Shortly Kylie came out and warmly greeted me and offered me something to drink of my choice..I was really psyched! - Hair washing: I'm not really into massages of any kind..I know I'm weird..stop screaming at me about how much ya'll love massages..lol. Kylie was gentle and I can see how someone else would probably enjoy her head massages more. - Hair cut: I have very fine hair so my goal for haircut is always..volume volume volume! I expressed that to Kylie when she asked me what I wanted to do with my hair. I also wanted to keep it longer, so it's a challenge. She turned my chair onto the side towards the street after mid-way of cutting hair, so I couldn't see what she was doing to me in the mirror. My friend warned me of this, so I was prepared. She also curled my hair after the cut without me asking to finish the look. When she was done and turned me around, I liked the haircut and appreciated the curl, but I couldn't really see what the haircut looked like until I go home, and wash my hair the next day. So after examining the haircut at home, I feel that she layered my hair a little more than I'm used to. my hair feel/look thinner than before, which is kind of the opposite of what I want. I don't hate it because it's not so bad that people can even see that I had a haircut, but when I tie my hair in a pony tail I can feel there seems to be less hair. So would I go back again? maybe? I see so many reviews about how crazy good Davey is...so I'm planning on going back maybe in a couple of months and try to schedule with Davey when Kylie is not around...The salon is so small is would be hard to avoid the awkward situation of seeing them both at the same time, how would I explain myself to the sweet Kylie that I am here to see Davey? hmm Dilemma... read more

This the place is the place to go if you need to get your hair cut, styled, colored, etc. Everyone is super friendly and easy to talk to. Cause you know it is sometimes weird when you get your haircut and you can't have a conversation with your hair stylist. I have had my hair cut by almost everyone there and everyone is great. They really know what they are doing and even with my sometimes weird explanations on how I want to get my haircut done they totally understand what I am going for and it turns out great. First off, location is on the edge of Chinatown; literally right along Nimitz Highway. Getting here was kind of an adventure, but it was a nice walk through Chinatown... Second, AMAZING staff!! Super friendly and accommodating. My friend had briefed them earlier that I would be stopping by to support her decision to make a hair change up. As such, my friend's stylist, Kylie (sp?), set aside a chair for me--front row seat! Upon entering this quaint salon, I was greeted with knowing smiles and was immediately asked if I needed anything or wanted a refreshment; I wasn't even a paying customer! Third, loved the decor. Semi modern, sleek and clean! Great lighting too that lets the natural light in. The chair that my friend was in also happened to be next to the window; perfect for people watching or for the little kids outside to awe at the hair transformations occurring inside. Fourth, the hair job came out FABULOUS. My friend had wanted to go with a red/blonde ombre style...I believe that the stylist and her discussed and a game plan was decided. With the results, I would say that her stylist knew her stuff! The outcome was subtle yet still provided my friend with the change she was looking for--Kylie even styled (e.g., curled) her hair after. Only con is it is a tad pricey; this cost my friend about $170 (without tip). Buuuut, if you're looking for that new look, an "outrageous" color or combination, I think this would be the place to come. Ryanjacobie rules! I've been coming here off and on over the past two years, and the service and the quality of the cuts have been consistently great! I always feel like an Asian form of Christina Hendricks or some other Hollywood bombshell equivalent whenever Alyse takes care of my hair. :) The cut, shampoo, and styling averages about $40 or so dollars with Alyse, and it is so worth it! She gives the best head massages and is very personable. I get quite a few compliments on my cut from my colleagues at work. Not to mention, she does a fab natural-looking ombre dye-job too. I love, love, love this salon. They cured my haircut phobia! (It first started when I went to a stylist on recommendation from a friend. As she's cutting my shoulder-blade length hair, she says, "Does your BF like your hair long or short?" I reply, "Long." She pauses for a moment, then says, "Don't worry. It'll grow." I left that salon with a BOB and a fear of scissors.) - I think a year had passed and I still hadn't been to a salon...so I finally manned up and called Ryanjacobie after stumbling upon their Yelp page. It was easy to make an appointment--they had a flexible schedule and they were really friendly. - Deena cut my hair. She is WONDERFUL. Seriously, I should just stop typing because 'WONDERFUL' is all that needs to be said. She cut my hair exactly how I wanted it cut--she kept the length and added movement! She did some face-framing layers too. You should have seen the way I smiled after she fixed my hair--it was better then Christmas. I've also had Alyse cut my hair, she was just as AWESOME! I've been more than satisfied with my cut every time I've stepped out of their salon. - I like their washroom, it's so relaxing. My neck is never sore and the products they use smell really nice. - Parking is a breeze! Park in the same building that the salon is in. This place a giant step up from other salons. As soon as a walk through the door, they offer me a beverage. With a location in downtown/chinatown, you would expect it to be a noisy place, but no, it's really calm and quiet, the perfect environment to get your hair cut. Always clean and a friendly staff. When you make an appointment, they will give you a call the day before, just to remind you. I always go to Ace to cut my hair. He is a PRO. Before, I didn't care how my hair looks, but after seeing what he did with my hair, it will never look like how it was before. After cutting it, there is the wash and head massage. The room where they wash your hair, it's like you're not even in downtown anymore. It's super relaxing with calm music. The way he massages your head, it is so comfortable. Ever since moving to Hawaii I've been searching for a salon that had professional stylists, great customer service, an aesthetically pleasing environment, and of course quality work. I found all four of those qualities at Ryan Jacobie salon. I purchased a Groupon for a cut and wash and decided to use it right before I flew out of town for a wedding. As soon as I walked in the door and I promptly greeted and offered a refreshment by Ryan himself and I instantly felt that I was receiving great customer service. I was promptly set up with Alyse who listened to my every concern during consultation and gave me feedback in a way that made me know that she was listening. The wash house experience was AMAZING. The best shampoo massage I've ever had, plus I highly recommend the sugar scrub..my hair and scalp has never felt so refreshed. Once it was time to style my hair I let her know that I had a very hard time trying to learn how to curl my hair (I always wear it straight by default) and she taught me a dummy-proof way how to curl using a flat iron. She made it look so easy and even told me how to keep it looking voluminous throughout the day (the good ol' hair flip). I've gone here twice now and have gotten a haircuts, color and a conditioning treatment. I've had Debi and Allen do my hair and both did a tremendous job. Previously I've only had one person do my hair for over 10 years but she lives on Kauai so in my search for a hairstylist on Oahu I was a tad nervous. Tried other salons but I just didn't get that OMG MY HAIR LOOKS AMAZING feeling. Coming here was the best hair decision. I feel like they just get me and suggest what's best for my hair. I'm so disappointed today. I always loved coming to Ryan Jacobie. They always made me feel welcome and at ease. My first time here was just before Halloween and they were handmaking nymph costumes. The customer service is top notch and the staff is so awesome. This is why I wanted to bring my good friend with me to try the salon because it had a good vibe and conveniently located near our offices. Part of the marketing for the salon are periodic emails to invite clients back to the Salon. After a long time away and a very stressful month, my friend and I were looking forward to coming in together. I called in and spoke to Chelsea, one of the newest members on staff. She looked for something for us in the calendar and found a place where both of us could be accommodated. I mentioned to her my friend wanted a color and in fairness she said she needed to find out the type of service to see if there was enough time to do it before closing at 7. There was a possibility of having to do the color another day if it couldn't be accommodated. Yesterday I received a call from Chelsea to confirm both appointments. I asked my friend to call Chelsea to let her know what type of color she wanted. She proceeded to call several times with no answer. I was surprised because Chelsea called me at 2:08pm far before closing time. And now today my friend was able to reach them and only one appointment was booked. I'm absolutely heartbroken. I looked forward to this all month with an important event on Saturday and we wanted to look our best. I thought the least they could have done was offer an alternative or option. I don't provide a lot of business. All l I ever get is a cut and color maybe 1-2 times a year because my hair grows so slowly. I got my curly hair cut here this past Saturday from Kylie. I am the first to admit that I have difficult hair: it's both fine and curly. Because of this, I'm pretty particular about haircuts... a cut that's less than perfect can go horribly wrong on my head. I've had trouble finding a stylist that works for me since my last one moved to Korea in 2010. There were a couple of things that I thought could have been done better during my visit to RyanJacobie. First, Kylie didn't even look at my hair until after the assistant had washed it. By then, it was obviously wet, and because it's curly, it looks way different when it's wet than when it's dry. At other salons, I've had stylists sit me down pre-wash with dry hair and talk about what I envisioned. This didn't happen at RyanJacobie, and it made me nervous. Perhaps stemming from this, once I washed my hair after the cut and it curled up, it was a lot shorter than I thought it would be, and looks a little too fluffy. Good things: the head massage during my wash was amazing. I almost fell asleep. My hair does feel a lot healthier now, and isn't getting as tangled. Kylie listened to what I wanted, and gave her opinion when I asked. She asked me how I wanted it styled after the cut, and made it look great! This place is close to work and everyone is super friendly, so I might give it a second chance and go back the next time I need a trim. read more

My hair went in very very sad and neglected and came out happy, healthy, and bouncy . I've never liked my haircuts enough to have a regular stylist, those sad hair days are over now that I've found Ryan. After a few hair-raising episodes with my last two salon experiences, I decided to try something new. My results were excellent and I'm having fun with my new hair. Here's what to expect: Upon arriving at the salon, staff promptly welcomed me and asked me to fill out a questionaire, which I didn't really want to do at first. But it left me intrigued and set the tone for my haircut. How many times do you get asked about the hair products you're addicted to? Shortly after a consultation with Ryan, who listened intently to my discription of an ideal cut, his assistant led me to the washbowl -- I'm so sorry but it's killing me that I can't remember your name! They use an array of Paul Mitchell products, including a very aromatic moisturizing lavender mint shampoo and condistioner, which I brought home. But the best part is the relaxing head massage you get, what a rare experience! Ryan strikes me as being very knowledgable about hair and as an educator seems intent to keep up with the latest and greatest, but above all puts customer satisfaction first. It's good to know about these traits, especially when trying out a new stylist. After a few snips my head was tranformed from something I wanted to put a hat over, to something I wanted to take out for a night on the town. It's a few days later and I'm still trying out more styles with my new do. This salon is quite reasonable and conveniently located in the Downtown/Chinatown area. But here's the secret bonus, you can catch glimpses of Honolulu Harbor from your seat! Very few salons can brag about having an ocean view, let alone a harbor view. read more

My first visit at the salon today! Always nervous about first visits, but the place (which I found on Groupon) exceeded my expectations. I was early but my stylist Allen took care of me right away. I was greeted with smiles from everyone in the salon. Allen took the time to talk to me about my hair and then gave me a really great cut. But the deep conditioning and head massage was the BEST EVER! I will go back just to get that done! Lol He showed me a new way to curl my hair and when I left the salon it looked so curly and full of life. My hair hasn't looked this good in awhile because of all the humidity and being in the ocean almost everyday. I felt really pretty...which is how everyone should feel when they leave a salon! Having been through a few of Hawaii's "best salons", I seemed to have missed this hidden treasure. Deena was a fabulous host and style-queen! We discussed my hair (which was a tragic mess) and she educated me on my the texture and styling of my hair. Her calm and friendly attitude made this experience one to remember. Not only was she a mad perfectionist, but she also guided me through the hair experience every single step, ensuring I was comfortable and loving every moment. After the styling was complete, she instructed me how to maintain and keep up the fabulous cut and also advised me on how to maintain the growth. I've been itching for a change and so I called Ryanjacobie Salon on Wednesday and asked for an appointment with Kylie. As luck would have it, they were able to schedule me in yesterday afternoon. I was a few minutes late for my appointment, but Kylie was an absolute doll! During our brief consultation, I showed her a few pictures of a shorter haircut I had had a few years ago. She shampooed my hair and sugared my scalp (very relaxing) and then she took out her scissors and did her magic...all the while, conversing with me as if we were childhood friends and dishing out informative tips for my hair regiment. Even though I'm uber lazy when it comes to my hair, I will definitely try out a few of her pointers. I had a Groupon so when it came to the bill, I had to pay about $2 for tax and then Kylie's tip, which I was happy to give her because she was such a sweetheart and I was honestly content with my new haircut. She even offered to give me a free trim when the back of my hair grows out in a few weeks! I think Ryan was actually cutting hair at the next station so I was able to talk to him for a little bit. Overall, everyone at the salon is super friendly and it is a relaxing and clean environment. The reason why I'm rating this experience 4 stars instead of 5 is because this is my first salon experience on Oahu so I'm not sure if it is good as it gets. Also, I know this is a stupid gripe, but I wish they had either a parking lot or offered validation for parking. Other than that, I would come back here again. And I would definitely request Kylie again ;) read more
