So, recently I opted to do an at home color myself and was incredibly unhappy with it so I called on Alia Rose to the rescue! I have heard of this salon over the years as I have a couple friends that go here. This is probably one of the prettiest and most well appointed salons I have ever been to. The staff, and I mean the entire staff from the front desk to the colorist and the shampoo girl, were beyond sweet. I had a great experience with Kailey, my colorist. She heard my plight and did an epic job at fixing my mess. I was in the chair for about three hours. A great experience here - I'm very happy with my hair color and I feel like I made a friend. FYI, this place seems to also be popular with young men as much of the clientele on the afternoon I was there were teenage boys and young men. They all seemed happy when the left. I lost track of time, was 30 minutes late, and still received professional service. I have been going to Christina since I was 8 years and I could not trust or love her more. I will share this story and photos just to show her magical abilities and serious understanding of hair and hair treatments. I moved from Chicago to New York City a few years ago and was going on a last minute vacation for which I wanted to touch up my highlights. For reference I am a brunette and Christina has given me this beautiful balayage/ lighter pieces framing my face and I just needed to touch up these highlights. Let me reiterate... HIGHLIGHTS. Long story short I walked out of my nyc appointment fully blonde. Not one strand of brown hair left on my head. Like Britney spears blonde circa 2000. It was trash. I immediately flew home to Christina. Before even telling my family I was coming into town I made sure Christina was available. She worked her magic ...after laughing and getting over the horror that was my hair. Some days I just don't want to do my hair and know they can do it better. Whichever the case, I know I will be well taken care of by the Stylists here. Unfortunately, my recent experiences have been very disappointing. During my previous visit, the receptionist, Briana, tried to charge me an additional $15 "for the thickness" of my hair without giving me any prior notice. My ethnic full hair has never  been an issue in prior visits. When I questioned it, she changed her explanation to say it was because my blowout took longer than 45 minutes. I pointed out the inconsistency and suggested that if time was the issue, next visit I will come with my hair fully washed. To give the stylist enough time to blowout my hair in the 45 minute block.  At my recent visit on Friday August 29th, I did exactly that. I arrived on time with my hair washed and wet. No one mentioned any extra charges when I checked in or checked out. Yet, when I reviewed my credit card statement two days later, I discovered a $15 charge. I called to question it because I honestly thought there had have been a mistake.  Briana told me that coming in with wet washed hair "is not part of their services" and that despite my appointment taking only 43 minutes, she still charged me. The other service is to come in with already dry hair and style it. I requested to speak with the manager and was told she was on maternity leave and she was in charge. Briana also stated she would reach out to manager Lindsey.  Not even 5 minutes later she called back stating that they would not be refunding me, even though the charge was never disclosed to me or authorized by me. This is unacceptable to take advantage of a customer.  This feels like deceptive trade practice. Charging customers after the fact without notification or consent. I am essentially losing the value of services I already paid for, since my hair is "thick" mind you my hair is not curly just wavy and full. Making it easier on the stylist and not using their shampoo/conditioner. One of the best parts of getting your hair styled is the wash. There is no reason for the receptionist to change the experience.  To be clear, the stylist did a wonderful job on my hair. However, the way this location handles charges, adds arbitrary fees, and refuses to resolve disputes is not good business or good customer service. I chose to forfeit the last two services I had remaining rather than return to a place that I no longer trust. Again losing money for lack of customer service.  Beware of hidden fees and deceptive trade practices here. They pick and choose when to apply extra charges, and it feels like they're trying to take advantage of customers.

The shampoo experience was so relaxing--exactly what you hope for when you're treating yourself. I also really appreciated that she asked if I wanted product in my hair instead of just automatically using it. It felt very personalized and attentive. I left with soft, bouncy curls and feeling completely refreshed. Overall, it was such a relaxing and enjoyable visit. I would 100% recommend this location and can't wait to come back again!

Shelli described a bit what she would consider doing with my hair and gave me her number. It was low-pressure enough that I contacted her the next time I needed a hair cut. I have always been a reluctant style subject. Since my mom subjected me to cuts by beauty school fiends as a kid, I have always been afraid of change, but Shelli and I had a nice discussion about what I could deal with (i.e. not 50 products and flatirons; I can't even dry my hair without bonking myself in the head repeatedly) and what I was looking for. She talked me up to something a little different but that was similar enough that I wouldn't go into shock. She also gave me good tips on how to style/dry it, since I am all thumbs at that (though on the first attempt I did a pretty good job at recreating her results, so that's saying something for her technique!) Maybe next we will move up to color, a new step for me! The salon itself is small with an explosion of graffiti-looking murals on the walls. Not what you might expect in Downers Grove, but it's cool that they are adding a splash of urban flair to this 'burb.
