Khoai Tây Muối Ớt (Devil Fries)
    Matthew C.

[IN A NUTSHELL] overpriced vietnamese food, good appetizers [VERDICT] - APPROVED [RUN-DOWN] Came to this place because I've been seeing it on ads. Overall a decent vietnamese restaurant but I feel like it was hyped and more trendy vietnamese than what I am used to where you go to a random pho restaurant and get a food for super cheap. They did have a nice twist of the appetizers that I haven't seen. I think if you're looking for a vietnamese place that has some classic but willing to try some new appetizers you should come here. They also had this lychee lemonade that I would try if I were to come back. [SCORE & ORDER] OVERALL: 3.63/5 Khoai Tây Muối Ớt (Devil Fries) $9.00 (3.5/5) - Perfectly golden fries tossed with aromatic scallion oil, pepper salt, savory Chinese sausage, dried shrimp, and fluffy pork floss - The fries were supper crispy and soft and it was a good appetizer. However, I do think that they needed a little more flavor. It had the classic loaded fries but I wish that the sauce would've been in the middle of the fries. The nice touch about this was the chinese sausage and the dried shrimp and the pork floss which I have never thought of for putting on fries. This is a good item to share with others. I would ask for the wasabi mayo on the side or get the shrimp toast and use that sauce. Bánh Bao Tôm Chiên Giòn (Sesame Shrimp Toast) $9.50 (4/5) -Golden bao buns filled with savory shrimp mousse and sesame, served with a punchy wasabi mayo. -I highly recommend getting this. This tasted like a Mantou that was deep fried (which is normally a dessert with condensed milk) but it was deep fried and filled with shrimp! It almost tasted like a deep friend siu mai but with more fluffy bread. It was actually so good! The wasabi mayo that came with it also gave a nice touch to it. The shrimp was also super juicy in the middle and came out fresh and hot. Cơm Thịt Nướng (Vietnamese Grilled Pork Rice) $19.00 (3.5/5) - Fire-grilled pork and a sunny-side egg over butter rice with pickled onion, lettuce, and tomato. Hit it with fish sauce, mix in the scallion oil, and go crazy. -The grilled pork was super juicy and delicious and lots of flavor. They have a different take on the fish sauce it normally comes with where I think it's a mix of sweet chili and fish sauce? The coconut rice was also really good, not too overwhelming. I do wish that the pork was a little more charged. Overall this dish was good, but not too much of the wow factor Vietnamese Egg Coffee $7.50 (3.5/5) -This was a pretty decent drink, had the normal vietnamese coffee flavor. The egg topping gave it the creaminess and was a nice touch. It also comes it somewhat of a large cup so I think it was worth it! [SERVICE & ATMOSPHERE] (not reflected upon review score): Service was good, there wasn't much checking in on how the food was or if we needed anything. Atmosphere was pretty quiet for lunch time (we were the only ones there for awhile). Parking may also be hard because it's in an apartment area.

Overall small mom and pop service a little slow for the size but nice portions and presentation. Lomo saltado and nice tender filet chunks tossed with onion and tomatoes in a sweet soy sauce with crispy fries. Butter rice with an egg on top. A little rich on the oil side for me after while with the fries and buttery rice. The cilantro sauce was a good touch as well. Could use some citrus and or spice to help balance out the richness but would get it again. Others in party got the Cajun butter noodles taste like Cajun seasoning and some heat too was also good We all liked the crispy shrimp toast as our app chopped shrimp came out like a shrimp sauce inside a crispy bun

A modern style pho/Viet spot that took over a tea shop space in a retail area that has condo living up top. So the parking is mostly street parking. They said they are still in works to do some interior renovating, as it does still look pretty plain in there, to the point to where their pricing doesn't really match a nice sit-down resto experience...yet. Cajun Seafood Fried Rice ($24/3.5*) I got this for take-out once and it was a mixed bag for me. The rice is very heavy and pretty oily. The rice sticks in clumps so doesn't seem to get that wok tossing that a good fried rice should. Then it is totally saturated in a strong cajun flavor which I'm assuming is a cajun spiced butter that gets tossed in. The shrimps and calamari are kinda chewy and over cooked. There is also a whole battered soft shelled crab on top which totally redeemed the whole dish. The crab is super moist and juicy full of crab flavor. I ended up eating the rice part in 2-3 other meals cut with more plain white rice to offset the rich cajun seasoning. Hanoi Pho ($20/3.5*) Beef shank meat that I'm pretty sure comes from the simmering of the broth. But they slice that tender meat and saute it in oil infused with black garlic, before adding back to the bowl of broth. I didn't really get a fried/smoky taste that the menu says, but there is a dark oil slick in your bowl upon receiving. There is a noticeable 'other' flavor here than their other basic pho broth. It is very tasty but on this one out, I found that broth to be very salty. I only sipped less than half of the broth as I just couldn't take all that sodium, even having put the pickled garlic and squeezes of lemon in there. The shank pieces are in strips and are both tender yet with decent chew. I just hold the standard of this 'northern' style of pho to Pho Hanoi where they take a flap or flank steak, pound it then flash saute it before putting in the soup. That has a more steak characteristic, whereas the shank here is straight up stew meat. May be unfair to compare the 2 but I clearly prefer Pho Hanoi's version. Beef Tongue Pho (($23/5*) I tried this another time and it was amazing. Broth again a tad salty but much more in check. The beef tongue were sliced in thicker uniform slices and were so good and tender. I've never seen beef tongue offered for pho, so this was a must get and was rewarded handsomely that day. They also use ho fun noodles for their pho, which I like much more than thin vermicelli noodles. They also include a Chinese fried donut with each bowl, which also I've never seen for a Viet joint. Just found out it is pretty good dipped into the broth. So not sure how this place is going to pan out. Their pricing seems a bit high ($20 -$25/meal) in an area that needs to be discovered. Their challenge will be to capture the residents that live directly above them, but the bigger challenge will be to get other customers from other parts of town. They have good intentions, but as we all know that simply cannot be enough to survive in today's climate. They need to be consistent and persistent. I'd like for them to survive and evolve to where they can catch a rhythm.

The hospitality was fine but food was underwhelming. The menu seemed promising but it didn't exceed expectations. We ordered a Brisket Pho and a Dino-Rib Pho and even upgraded to the milk broth after the server told us it was their signature and only offered on the weekends. The dino rib meat was dry and didn't look freshly cooked. We also ordered a Lomo Saltado which I went against my better judgement to order in a restaurant that specializes more on Vietnamese food. Honestly it tasted more like a Shaking Beef dish. The sauce was on the sweeter side, the meat had zero seasoning and it was a bit chewy. I ended up spitting some of the pieces out. The Cajun Garlic Butter Noodles with Ribeye had pretty good flavored noodles. However, the Ribeye was also lacking in flavor and a bit chewy. The only thing that was good was the Shrimp Toast. It was actually the first item from our order that came out and was really good. It was also served fresh and hot. It led us to believe everything else was going to be just as good. Aside from the food taste and textures being mediocre, perhaps the most disappointing was the temperature. Other than the shrimp toast, everything came out lukewarm. It really emphasized the lackluster experience. At one point, we also saw someone come out of the kitchen and throw something in the microwave. Hopefully just something needed for the kitchen and not someone's meal, but at this point I wouldn't be surprised. I realIze the cost of everything is up these days. You can barely eat out for less than $20-$25 pp at a fast food restaurant now. But the pricing here definitely was not worth the value of the quality of the food. They had a sizzle reel playing in the restaurant about their story and how they grew from popups to their restaurant. Perhaps it's the transition that was causing the kinks and hopefully they will work it out as they go. I don't enjoy writing disappointed reviews, but I do owe honest ones from my POV. Three stars for the service, newness, hot and fresh shrimp toast.

SuperClub opened 2 months ago where Tea Villa once was. A mural painted on the main wall. flatscreen in corner shows a Dj spinning some hip hop tunes. Inside seating only. Street parking. Greeted soon after entering. Ordered at front counter. Food arrived in 6ish minutes. Table service available. Offerings (Modern & traditional Vietnamese food): Appetizers, salads, pho, modern pho, wok & grill, sides, drinks. Slurps: Hanoi style pho (19.85) modern -broth had sweet essence via rock sugar & onions. Bold beefiness from bones boiled for 48 hours. -black garlic oil, red onions. Cilantro, green onions elevated flava. -toppings: bean sprouts, basil. Fried donut, onions, fresh garlic slices, sriracha sauce. -slightly tender shaken beef pieces from shank with some gristle main protein. *not traditional Hanoi style pho. Modern twist done well. Excellent rendition. 5 stars: Worthy! Quality ingredients & technique. Quantiy: reasonable

My friends and I heard about SuperClub had opened in Hayward and wanted to try it out. I have been having their food at festivals throughout the Bay Area when they were vendors at the various events. I really enjoyed their food at the events and wanted to follow them on their next journey. My friends ordered the pho and I ordered the lomo saltado. In addition, we also shared the chicken wings, shrimp toast and some drinks. One of my friends who just moved from Vietnam to San Jose last year really enjoyed his pho and said it's one of the best he ever had. He told me that he cannot wait to come back to get the pho again. My lomo saltado was perfectly cooked and the fries were actually crispy even after 30 minutes of eating, the fries were still crispy and tasty! Great flavor and big portion too! I would totally get the lomo saltado again. My friends and I have had the chicken wings and shrimp toast at the festivals before, so having it at the restaurant brought back memories of those summer time vibes. Shrimp toast is my fave and they use open face bao buns and stuff it with the shrimp paste and deep fry it. Such great flavor and a great twist on shrimp toast. Every member of the staff was super friendly and wonderful. I can see them becoming more and more busier once word gets out about their top tier food and high quality service! Cannot wait to come back!

Milky broth with beef cooked in black garlic oil. House made spice is habanero level, the pickled garlic is a great touch.

Food 5 = Amazing pho, that milk broth and fresh made rice noodle is worth it, and i added the black garlic oil beef, which reminded me of almost ramen too! Also order the shrimp toast, wow! Got the lychee lemonade and their crazy good calamansi-thai-green tea were drinks! Service = 5, just two people, which is fone for slow laid back, but do not expect fast when busier, as they can hold 9 tables inside for 24 butts, and some outdoor shared patio that holds about 20. Ambiance = 4, clean and high ceilings, bench and tables, and tv on white walls with some flowers about. Will return!

4.5/5 Delicious new little spot with bold fusion flavors and stellar execution. So fun to find this place on Yelp and give it a try! Strangely located at the bottom floor of a new condo complex, but there's good signage to help you find the place after you street park. We were warmly greeted and seated immediately, and offered a pleasant iced tea. The menu looked delicious, and glancing around we saw that the portion sizes were large. But being hungry and eager to try things, we still ordered 3 dishes for 2. - Pho King with milky broth (weekend special): delicious and rich, flavorful bone broth. The meat (meatballs, brisket, steak, and rib) were generously portioned and excellent quality. This was served with basil, bean sprouts, a small Chinese donut, and cute little containers of hot sauce and garlic slices. It's unusual to get a broth so balanced, herby, savory, but also light. - seafood cajun fried rice: actually does come with a whole fried soft shell crab on top as pictured! loved how chewy the rice was. It was a generous portion with a decent number of shrimps and calamari too - cajun garlic butter udon with ribeye steak: our favorite item. The steak was cooked a beautiful medium rare with a great outer sear and was so tender. The garlic butter udon is reminescent of rich garlic noodles but somehow not as heavy. The green sauce packed an additional punch and made it fairly spicy, but the fresh pickled red onion cut the richness and heat well The bathroom is shared in the building and a little tricky to find, behind multiple doors and through hallways. However, the place itself is modern looking and comfortable. We enjoyed the 90s-00s music videos playing from the TV :)

When I entered it looked like a cafeteria type restaurant. I was greeted and seated very kindly They explained the menu and we decided on two different phos. Order a milk broth pho and Hanoi style broth. I had no idea what to expect. Both were delicious with very rich flavors and rice noodles. Service is excellent. Adequate parking in the lot across the street market Paris Baguette.

This modern Vietnamese fusion restaurant is located on the ground floor of the Sohay apartments in Hayward. There's street parking in front and a private lot across the smaller street (not the Main Street) from Paris baguette next door. The service is super friendly and attentive. Pho: On the weekends they have a unique "milky broth" that you can choose for the pho and it's pretty good! And serving every day is the Hanoi pho which was super flavorful. They serve a Chinese donut that you can dip in the pho broth and also provide homemade sriracha sauce and pickled garlic. If you want things like hoisin sauce or limes you can just ask them. The beef tongue is thick and tender. The pho noodles are fresh and silky. Definitely the best pho in the East Bay! So glad I don't have to drive all the way to San Jose for pho now. Other food items: - the shrimp baos are really good, great texture. - the shaking beef Peruvian style is delicious! The fries are crispy, the fried egg's edges are also crispy, the roasted garlic pieces is a great touch, the beef is tender. Highly recommended. - the Cajun udon is good but boy it's pretty spicy and it's a creeper spice. It doesn't seem spicy on first bite but it builds. Drinks: - instead of plain water, they serve everyone complimentary pandan iced tea and it's very refreshing. - the Thai green tea (either with calamansi or condensed milk) is super unique and interesting and worth a try. - the lychee lemonade is a bit sour (from the lemons) and refreshing with lychee bits. This is a great addition to the area and definitely worth a try!

I'm writing this because I was appalled by the way this management and staff treated our party during my friends' daughter's birthday celebration yesterday. SúperClub markets itself as a modern, trendy Vietnamese spot, but the environment felt incredibly unprofessional and, frankly, like we were being bullied. The space is tiny and felt shoddily put together. They had three young staff members who lacked any basic hospitality skills. Throughout the event, they gave us literal death stares and were talking about us in Vietnamese. When we tried to be polite and said thank you on the way out, they completely ignored us. It was an incredibly uncomfortable and hostile vibe for a family celebration. Management was a nightmare. Despite the restaurant being completely DEAD (only two other parties there the whole time), they hit my friends with exorbitant extra fees for going over the "allotted time" with no prior warning. Their excuse of "lost profit" was laughable since the place was empty. It felt like a transparent and heartless cash grab. While the the food was mediocre at best, the drinks were a huge miss--either sickeningly sweet or totally flavorless. The vibe was so toxic and high and mighty that it left a bad taste in everyone's mouth. This place acts like they're above their customers, but they've managed to alienate their local community right out of the gate. If you want to feel welcomed and respected, especially for a special occasion, go elsewhere in Hayward. UPDATE in response to owner's comments: It's unfortunate that management would rather double down on a dishonest narrative than admit their staff failed. While Louis T. is busy listing 'complimentary shrimp toasts' and orange slices, he's ignoring the actual reality of the service. You had one staff member assigned to clear plates and keep the place tidy--he failed miserably. Tables remained cluttered and messy. The 'present' team you're bragging about spent more time giving us death stares than actually maintaining the space. You claim no drink package was ordered as if we didn't spend money. Multiple people in our party purchased additional drinks, bringing you extra business, yet the 'complimentary' water and tea you mentioned were so diluted they were basically tasteless. And just because a host is forced to settle a bill at the end of an overwhelming and uncomfortable event doesn't mean they were satisfied. It means they wanted to escape a hostile environment as quickly as possible. Again, the restaurant was dead. Two parties in several hours is not a 'full' restaurant. Charging a family exorbitant fees in an empty building while the staff talks behind their backs is predatory behavior, plain and simple. You can claim you stand by your 'care and effort,' but you can't 'care' your way out of lying about how empty the restaurant was or how unprofessional the staff acted. We weren't just guests; we were paying customers who were treated like an inconvenience. The community deserves to know how you actually handle feedback."

Living within a couple hundred feet from the restaurant, I finally tried their Hanoi style pho (bold and beefy). I ordered the pho king which is their version of the dac biet. The soup itself was flavorful and clearly made with care, even as a takeout order. While I enjoyed the depth of the broth, the $32 price point feels a bit high for what's offered. Overall, it's a solid bowl of pho, but more of an occasional treat than a go to.

    Cajun Udon Noodles

My friend and I decided to try Super Club for the first time, and we were so impressed. It was our first time ordering here, and everything was delicious. My friend went with the Cajun Udon Noodles, which they really enjoyed, and I had the Lomo Saltado plate--both dishes were packed with flavor. If you're looking for something a bit different and exciting in the Hayward area, this spot is definitely worth checking out. The food is delicious and I am already looking forward to coming back and working my way through the rest of the menu!

A fantastic spin-off of Krung Thai right by Valley Fair! I…read morewholeheartedly agree with the chorus of Yelpers singing this place's praises -- the flavors here are truly outstanding. You simply cannot go wrong with any of their standout dishes: the rich and aromatic khaosoi, the incredible crab fried rice, or any of their curries. Portions are generously sized, prices are wonderfully affordable, the service is impeccable, and parking is plentiful. Just be prepared -- seats fill up fast, so good luck snagging a table! After 8 PM, they switch to to-go orders only. The boss is always in command and deeply hands-on. If anything isn't perfect, speak to him directly -- he makes sure every customer leaves happy. Authentic Thai excellence done right. Highly recommended!

AN OFF DAY 4.0…read more It seems like finding excellent Thai food is becoming more difficult these days. This place is probably one of the better options in the area. We enjoy coming here, but our most recent visit left us a bit underwhelmed. We ordered Thai Iced Teas (which were unfortunately served in clear plastic to-go cups), Mama's Egg Rolls, Crab Fried Rice, and Panang Curry with Beef. The standout dish was the Crab Fried Rice. We couldn't see any noticeable chunks of crab, but it was wonderfully seasoned. Where they fell short was in the service and ambiance. Within a minute of being seated, a server stopped by to take our order. When we asked for a little more time, no one returned, and we eventually had to flag someone down. During our meal, no one came by to check on us or ask how everything was. Perhaps it was because there didn't seem to be an assigned server for our table: one person took our order, another delivered the food, and someone else brought the bill. After finishing our meal, we sat for quite a while waiting. Fortunately, we weren't in a hurry. We eventually had to wave someone over for boxes and our check. As for the ambiance, the decor wasn't the issue. It was the loud music coming from the kitchen competing with the music playing in the dining room. The combination was distracting and not particularly pleasant. Unless they are intentionally going for a "street food" vibe, it's not something customers should have to experience. We will continue to dine here, but hope management takes note and makes improvements in these areas.

My husband and I had dinner at Shu Mai tonight, and wow! We'll definitely be back…read more We ordered the roasted half chicken and the soft-shell crab cold noodles, and both were incredible. The cold noodles were packed with flavor and real crab, and the roasted chicken was perfectly cooked with an amazing char siu-inspired flavor. We made the rookie mistake of ordering two large plates for just the two of us, but they were so good we finished every bite. The service was fantastic. Friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. The entire staff was on top of everything, and the atmosphere was beautiful and inviting. We loved being able to watch the kitchen in action and see the care that goes into every dish. Already looking forward to coming back to try the spicy pho New York strip and the chili shrimp & watermelon salad!

But not worth the price -Crab fried rice: tasty! 10/10 would NOT get again? Their roasted chicken. I've actually never had chicken so dry before. I didn't think chicken could actually get that tough! Service: Our group tends to fight over the bill, so our friend had paid the bill mid meal, and when I say mid meal, I mean we had full plates and a few items coming out still. But baby! Once that bill was paid and that 30% cash tip was taken from our table, we did not hear from our server AGAIN. We had extra patè and ordered more donut bread for it and didn't get it until we had asked at least twice, if not three times, and by that time we were pretty much done with dinner. No water refills, no checking up on us. Nothing. Kind of funny when you think about it lol

My husband and I live in Santa Cruz and finally gave it a try. I was a little apprehensive at first…read moreone because of mixed Yelp reviews, two because the exterior signs suggested it's both a pho house and Mexican spot, and also because the inside was empty on this Friday night around 6:30. We decided to give it a try and are now so happy we did. I got the veggie pho and my husband got the rare steak, meat ball, tendon pho. The veggie pho included tofu, mushrooms, bok choy and green onion, as well as a healthy portion of noodles. The full-bodied broth was absolutely delicious (I did add the accompanying spice from time to time). My husband was super happy with the bowl he had too. I haven't seen him get so excited since he last had pho in Seattle. The service was also wonderful. The younger cashier that took our order, brought us water and served our bowls of pho was super friendly and attentive. Additionally, my husband initially planned to order the vegetarian pho with meatballs added. The cook (possibly owner) came out to ensure that's what he wanted. He instead recommended the dish my husband ended up ordering and commented that it would cost us a little less money as well. I felt that said a lot about the establishment and its workers. The restaurant was clean and really large. I noticed some coming in for pick up orders but my husband and I were the only ones dining in at the time. I was sad thinking about all the restaurants that came before it in that exact space that eventually closed. Given the great service and delicious pho (best I've had in Santa Cruz), I highly recommend trying it out. This spot deserves our business!

Definitely spicy but not overwhelming Can't say anything wrong about the egg rolls. They also have a Mexican menu... a bit strange of a cuisine combo. Didn't try anything on it, but a good thing to know for a family with mixed tastes. They do have TVs, so my children just stared at them the whole time, but also sometimes this is a plus?? Depends on the day... Very empty on a Wednesday.

When we got…read moreto the restaurant, I remembered I had come here about a year ago, and the menu had totally been revamped, either that or it was the lunch menu. Anyways we got seated quickly, and I began with a nice cold beer and we started looking at the menu. We instantly had to get the baked pork chop w. Spaghetti as that was pretty much our childhood choice, going to HK style places. We grabbed some fried fish skin in salted egg yolk and fried chicken in salted egg yolk as we haven't had that before. Both were good. I definitely never had that chicken in salted egg yolk before but it seemed to work well. We got a half order of the Hainanese chicken, and that was delicious with the sauces provided. You can never go wrong with dim sum, so we got the sui mai, har gow, steamed pork ribs, and chicken feet. All were comparable to what you would get at a dim sum restaurant in the morning, but instead we had it at 8pm! Overall, the ambiance of the place is nice and quiet, with a few families eating out, and some college students enjoying a meal. The waiters would frequently stop by and refill our water cups whenever they were near empty, I probably would have got rice but my friends wanted spaghetti with the baked porkchop, overall a great place for a meal with dim sum too!
