Pho VN is located in one of Union City's popular Asian cross street malls, sharing a large parking lot with other outstanding eateries. The space inside the restaurant is large and can comfortably fit small and large parties alike. Reminiscent of the classic Vietnamese restaurants in this area, you'll find each table stocked with utensils, napkins, and sauces and staff scurrying around with bowls or trays of them toward their hungry patrons. As we walked in, we were motioned to sit at any of the open tables; the staff greeted us with menus and got us started with waters. Their menu is comprehensive and includes all your Vietnamese staples including popular appetizers like spring/egg rolls, noodle dishes like pho and vermicelli, rice plates, and delicious iced drinks featuring the traditional phin filtered Vietnamese coffee. For the pho bowls, you'll have the option of a medium or large portion with the primary difference being the amount of noodles you'll get and a slightly smaller protein portion. I ended up getting a large and it was plenty filling but the medium seemed reasonable as well. With each bowl, you'll get a platter of bean sprouts and basil leaves to spruce up your meal. Highly recommend dumping those in right when you get the steaming hot bowl! I also ended up getting an ice coffee - the flavor was strong and balanced out as the ice melted. It was a delicious indulgence! When it came time to pay, we did so up front at the register. They are cash only but I believe cash apps are also accepted. The staff were quick, friendly, and thorough in their service. You'll have a pleasant time here with your party and minimal interruptions from the staff unless you're looking to refill on waters. Overall, Pho VN checks all the boxes for when you're craving a hot bowl of pho and meaty pieces to go with those bites. I haven't had a chance to try their other dishes yet but this location is conveniently located, easy to get to and park, and accessible to other activities and eateries nearby making it very likely I'll be back soon! Wife was craving Pho so we went to here as it always hits the spot when we don't make it at home. Egg roll was nice and crispy on the outside and steaming hot on the inside. Make sure to cut it or break it open before eating unless you want to burn your mouth. The pho was good as always. I'm from San Jose so I have been resigned to making a long drive down whenever I'm craving Vietnamese. When my husband was craving pho and we didn't have the emotional capacity to drive the twins down, we decided to check out this local gem. Rating Breakdown: 2/2 Stars for Taste -- I think whether or not you like this place is dictated by whether you like your broths on the sweet side. My husband ordered the #1 beef pho combo and his one complaint was he found the broth overly sweet. I'm not a beef pho person (sacrilege, I know) so I ordered the mi bo kho -- I freaking loved it. The salty sweet broth with a bit of an umami funk was so addictive, I emptied my bowl. The beef brisket it came with just fell apart, it had the perfect combination of tender beef and soft connective tissue. It was so well cooked that even my 1 year olds had no problems chewing it. I'm used to this soup coming with carrots, but I didn't miss the veggies at all. We also ordered the Vietnamese coffee, which was whooooooowee strong. 1/1 Stars for Value -- I am still reeling with sticker shock at the price of noodles these days (Pho Hanoi, I'm looking at you!) The bowls here were about $15 for a medium. If this was medium, I can't imagine how big the large is. I brought it home and it wouldn't fit in my largest bowl, I had to bring out the salad serving bowl. They gave us generous portions of meat and side veggies. I had enough bean sprouts left over that I could make a stir fry. The coffee was $7, this I could probably skip next time. 1/1 Stars for Customer Service -- The man at the counter was very friendly and helpful. It's tough returning here when the people who work this place-- specifically the big guy at the cashier, the moderately skinny guy with black slick hair who wears black most the time, and this older man that sits with his airpods on at the table. They're literally not welcoming and give so much underlying attitude it's difficult to hold back from checking on the spot. Patrons sit in silence with no music, no ambience, nothing. It's incredibly awkward as a business. He rushed our orders, was a smart ass to a friendly question when we asked what's good here (he said stoically "number 1 that's why it's number 1"). If I could leave zero stars I would. I tried to give the owner feedback on the shrimp cakes, they smelled and had an off taste and he interrupted me the second I started speaking, saying I was the problem because he already checked them. I never once asked for free food but he assumed that's what I wanted. He started talking in another language as the whole restaurant starred at me. My only concern was that my stomach hurt two bites into my meal and that is not ok. I could care less about anything else. When I paid him close to $80 for our meals, he only took Venmo or Zelle. That's as fishy as his establishment. I will be calling the health department and the better business bureau. The very least he could have done is listened and apologized, as a real business owner that cares about his guests would do. I am sure they will respond with an excuse after the way he treated me and from reading their reviews. All they have to do is take responsibility for giving horrible customer service. Don't blame it on cultural differences, just say you don't care. You're not missing anything else. I've been going to VN for a few years now. They serve great portions and their Bun Bo Hue is arguably the best in the east Bay Area. They give a lot of toppings and pork blood, like it should be served. I like their beef phos too. But having ordered their chicken pho ga twice now, I will recommend to avoid it. The chicken is hard, dry, and inedible. Likely not their specialty but if you are craving a pho ga - check out pho ga 88 on Alvarado Nile's instead. Otherwise, decent choice for the beef options. Absolutely amazing pho! I just ate here and I'm seriously impressed. The broth was rich and flavorful--clearly simmered for hours--and the ingredients were super fresh. This place is located next to Starbread Bakery. Always plenty of parking in the complex. They also only take cash so bring cash with you or you can use the atm they have inside (but you have to pay a fee for using it) I have been going here for about a year and some months since I saw it by Starbread. I usually go for pho and my boyfriend gets the rice plates. I like that this place has my favorite eggyolk and condensed milk drink with sprite. The owner laughed at me the first time I ordered the drink and looked at my bf and said "she orders like she's Vietnamese " lol I like the drink leave me alone lol Anyway, I love the food, the service is always quick, and the place is always clean. I usually always get the same thing and it's always been consistently good. Maybe my only gripe about this place is that they don't take card but that doesn't really deter me from going here. This time I went during lunch on weekday made sure I got nicely spot and of course they had beef broth. Went for pho with lean meat. The food here is pretty good, but the service is unfortunately not. We'll do the food first. Food: I ordered the bun Bo nuong, my go-to at any Viet place. The sauce was flavorful, and the meat was tender and also very flavorful-- a little too much gristle for my personal tastes, though. It was served on a bed of lettuce and cucumber with the noodles. When we ordered, we asked if it will be served with a lot of herbs and they reassured us it would, so I was confused about the lack of herbs on arrival. I asked after some of the herbs that are usually on bun Bo, like Thai basil or Vietnamese mint. Waiter was very confused. Said there were already herbs. I asked if perhaps I could have more, and they brought a small bowl that was filled mostly with... more lettuce. And one sprig of basil and mint. My experience with a service dog: When we arrived, i was met with a rude reaction to my service dog. He said "no animals" to which I said "he's a service dog". The waiter seemed like he wanted to press the issue, but instead just mumbled "hope he doesn't disturb all the other customers" as he led us to our table. It is a very unprofessional way to treat a service dog user. My service dog is a very demure and professional little guy who kind of just stands there-- he gave this waiter no reason to be suspicious of him! Service: On a Monday night it is relatively uncrowded, with just three tables filled. With two waiters, I was disappointed in the lack of service. We ran out of water about ten minutes after it was brought, and they never came back-- no water refills, no "how is your meal" or "enjoy your meal" from the waiter. No "do you want the check now?", or anything like that. If they'd checked on us even once, we could have asked for more water or the check, but we saw him only twice: at the part where we order our food, and the part where we receive our food. I happily drive from Hayward just to eat here! Hands down THE BEST Pho around! You can easily swap between rice or egg noodles for your pho. They even have a chili paste in addition to the typical sriracha and oyster sauce. The broth is really really good! I don't know what they do differently but other restaurants need to take note! Their other dishes are also very good! I have tried their short ribs and it gets inhaled every time! They tend to let you eat so if you want something, you will have to get their attention. I recommend to order everything you want or need upfront, or at least tell them you want drinks or dessert later.
