I'm from San Jose so I have been resigned to making a long drive down whenever I'm craving Vietnamese. When my husband was craving pho and we didn't have the emotional capacity to drive the twins down, we decided to check out this local gem. Rating Breakdown: 2/2 Stars for Taste -- I think whether or not you like this place is dictated by whether you like your broths on the sweet side. My husband ordered the #1 beef pho combo and his one complaint was he found the broth overly sweet. I'm not a beef pho person (sacrilege, I know) so I ordered the mi bo kho -- I freaking loved it. The salty sweet broth with a bit of an umami funk was so addictive, I emptied my bowl. The beef brisket it came with just fell apart, it had the perfect combination of tender beef and soft connective tissue. It was so well cooked that even my 1 year olds had no problems chewing it. I'm used to this soup coming with carrots, but I didn't miss the veggies at all. We also ordered the Vietnamese coffee, which was whooooooowee strong. 1/1 Stars for Value -- I am still reeling with sticker shock at the price of noodles these days (Pho Hanoi, I'm looking at you!) The bowls here were about $15 for a medium. If this was medium, I can't imagine how big the large is. If I could leave zero stars I would. I tried to give the owner feedback on the shrimp cakes, they smelled and had an off taste and he interrupted me the second I started speaking, saying I was the problem because he already checked them. I never once asked for free food but he assumed that's what I wanted. He started talking in another language as the whole restaurant starred at me. My only concern was that my stomach hurt two bites into my meal and that is not ok. I could care less about anything else. When I paid him close to $80 for our meals, he only took Venmo or Zelle. That's as fishy as his establishment. I will be calling the health department and the better business bureau. The very least he could have done is listened and apologized, as a real business owner that cares about his guests would do. I am sure they will respond with an excuse after the way he treated me and from reading their reviews. All they have to do is take responsibility for giving horrible customer service. Don't blame it on cultural differences, just say you don't care. You're not missing anything else. I've been going to VN for a few years now. They serve great portions and their Bun Bo Hue is arguably the best in the east Bay Area. They give a lot of toppings and pork blood, like it should be served. I like their beef phos too. But having ordered their chicken pho ga twice now, I will recommend to avoid it. The chicken is hard, dry, and inedible. Likely not their specialty but if you are craving a pho ga - check out pho ga 88 on Alvarado Nile's instead. Otherwise, decent choice for the beef options. Absolutely amazing pho! I just ate here and I'm seriously impressed. The broth was rich and flavorful--clearly simmered for hours--and the ingredients were super fresh. I usually go for pho and my boyfriend gets the rice plates. I like that this place has my favorite eggyolk and condensed milk drink with sprite. The owner laughed at me the first time I ordered the drink and looked at my bf and said "she orders like she's Vietnamese " lol I like the drink leave me alone lol Anyway, I love the food, the service is always quick, and the place is always clean. I usually always get the same thing and it's always been consistently good. Maybe my only gripe about this place is that they don't take card but that doesn't really deter me from going here. I think I got a number seven I forgot to take pictures but it was pretty good broth was flavorful didn't have to add anything to it so that was good. I feel like the ambience of this pho place was a lot nicer then other pho restaurants that I've been at but I feel like the price of the phi reflects that a little bit. I happily drive from Hayward just to eat here! Hands down THE BEST Pho around! You can easily swap between rice or egg noodles for your pho. They even have a chili paste in addition to the typical sriracha and oyster sauce. The broth is really really good! I don't know what they do differently but other restaurants need to take note! Their other dishes are also very good! I have tried their short ribs and it gets inhaled every time! They tend to let you eat so if you want something, you will have to get their attention. I felt like I got a big portion of bean sprouts lol which I loved and cilantro. Extra limes were appreciated. The service is nice and prompt. The food arrived shortly. The broth to me this time went on salty side. The meat was good and noodles portion was huge to my preference. Mom went with seafood one and she was satisfied. We also craved for fresh spring rolls. The food here is pretty good, but the service is unfortunately not. We'll do the food first. Food: I ordered the bun Bo nuong, my go-to at any Viet place. The sauce was flavorful, and the meat was tender and also very flavorful-- a little too much gristle for my personal tastes, though. It was served on a bed of lettuce and cucumber with the noodles. When we ordered, we asked if it will be served with a lot of herbs and they reassured us it would, so I was confused about the lack of herbs on arrival. I asked after some of the herbs that are usually on bun Bo, like Thai basil or Vietnamese mint. Waiter was very confused. Said there were already herbs. I asked if perhaps I could have more, and they brought a small bowl that was filled mostly with... more lettuce. And one sprig of basil and mint. My experience with a service dog: When we arrived, i was met with a rude reaction to my service dog. He said "no animals" to which I said "he's a service dog". It is a very unprofessional way to treat a service dog user. My service dog is a very demure and professional little guy who kind of just stands there-- he gave this waiter no reason to be suspicious of him! Service: On a Monday night it is relatively uncrowded, with just three tables filled. With two waiters, I was disappointed in the lack of service. We ran out of water about ten minutes after it was brought, and they never came back-- no water refills, no "how is your meal" or "enjoy your meal" from the waiter. No "do you want the check now?", or anything like that. If they'd checked on us even once, we could have asked for more water or the check, but we saw him only twice: at the part where we order our food, and the part where we receive our food. Tried this place hoping for authentic bun Bo: rice noodle salad with beef. It's pretty good ( I will keep searching) The beef is flavorful and tender and not too fatty. The vegetable part was mostly lettuce. We asked for herbs. Waiter seemed confused. We said you know like basil Vietnamese coriander and mint? He said " they are in there". There's mint. Well ok. Finally he said , do you want more? Thanks yes, herbs we don't need more lettuce. He brought a bowl with 4 fronds of basil and more lettuce. Came here on a Sunday afternoon around 2pm, and it was lively! Got seated quickly as soon as the table was finished getting wiped down. Their menu is nicely thought out and fancy compared to many other Vietnamese restaurants. My partner and I ordered a L meatball pho to share and their service is kind and efficient. As soon as I took a sip of the broth, I couldn't stop eating my noodles with the broth. Often times I don't drink the broth because it ends up making me super thirsty due to msg. This one tho, tasted different and the flavor was exactly what I needed to clear my congested nose due to these awful Spring allergies! The amount of cilantro, basil, bean sprouts, and green onions was perfect! I had devoured it all. The meatballs were soo delicious with the oyster and hot sauce. You can taste that the sauces aren't watered down... So glad to have come across this Vietnamese restaurant, coming from Hayward :) we will definitely be back and I cannot wait to introduce this place to friends & family. The service is horrible. I've never been yelled to pay for food I ordered but never got. When we walked in with a party of 10 we got sat immediately, but were waiting for the rest of our party to arrive we got waters and food for 2 kids ordered. Once the rest of our party arrived they brought out waters for them. So far everything was well. 15-20mins pass and NO ONE comes to take our order. I get up to ask the man upfront to take our order, I later learned he's the owner. He didn't even look up at me he said "ok you're ready now" as if he was waiting on us. We'd been ready for 15 mins by then. Once our food was ordered it came 5-10 mins I got a medium chicken broth chicken soup. The chicken was dry and the broth was bland. I used so much lime and siracha to put some flavor in it. When my husband got his $20 BBQ short ribs, it was only a cup of rice and TWO short ribs. TWO!!! For $20. Ridiculous pricing and mediocre ribs. I went back up to the front register and asked the owner if we could add two more ribs for $7.95 to the order he said yes and we NEVER got them. Here comes the fun part. We all went to the front to pay (CASH ONLY) for our food and they wanted me to pay for the extra ribs. I told the woman helping us I never got them and she said ok. I paid for my plate, my husband's, and my kids $57. The rest of my party paid and when we got to the last person paying the guy helping him said "well your the last one so you'll have to pay for the extra ribs" my friend said he wasn't and the guy at the registered looked over at our party and yelled "WHO HAD THE SHORT RIB PLATE!" I said I did but never got it. He turns around starts yelling at the kitchen comes back 20 seconds later in a way softer voice, and his tail between his legs, and said "oh I confirmed with them they forgot to make it, sorry about that".
