Just moved to Chattanooga last month. 2021 Explorer that would only run for 10 minutes on a fully charge battery. Then would not start and had a Service Charging System light. Called the dealership and they were over a week out. Saw a review for S&S and gave them a call. We very knowledgeable and articulate on the phone. Had it towed in on a Monday night and received a call with the diagnosis at 9:15am Tuesday morning. Communication from the staff was the best out of any car repair service I have used. Far superior than the dealerships. Picked it up Thursday afternoon and it was running like a champ. Price was what I suspected for an alternator and a battery but had to be less expensive than the dealership. S&S quoted 3 hours labor and the dealership said 8 over the phone. I came to S and S to have a routine oil and filter service on my 2006 Honda Ridgeline. The mechanics always do an inspection of the vehicle. It was noted that my battery posts and cables were corroded. I authorized them to be cleaned. I used a card I receive after each service to have my tires rotated for free. The mechanic's knowledge as well as the free tire rotation are much appreciated. We also regularly have our 2012 Honda Accord regularly serviced by S and S. I am always completely satisfied from start to finish. read more

Recently took my 2004 Toyota Tundra in and was told that rotor and brake replacement was suggested due to pad wear and grooves in my rotors. Fast forward 2 months or so later and I noticed some deep grooves in my newly replaced rotors. I scheduled a follow up and had the tech look over the issue. The fellow in the office came through after I waited in the waiting room for approximately a hour during my appointment. He told me that the grooves were normal and nothing to worry about... that it was due to the way pads are made now with inconsistent metal content. I've researched since and see multiple articles outlining that cheap pads do have characteristics they refer to, and these are the ones they installed, "cheap" apparently. Also there is a bedding procedure that needs to be done, which I imagine was not. Long story short: S&S: "Hey your rotors have grooves, you should change those." Me: "Okay I trust you, here is $600+ for new brakes and rotors" Me: "Hey guys my new rotors have grooves!" S&S: "Oh, that's normal. Nothing to worry about" read more

went in for oil change, got "up sale" again about my brake pads. The "up sale" is suspiciously bordering misleading if not lying. I stand with my previous review: if you know what you want and always decline "up sale" offers, this is still working visiting. If not, steer away from this establishment. I had my Subaru engine resealed there in the summer of 2023 and in 10,000 miles, cost over $4000. I have had nothing but problems with S&S auto. After I got the car back, I began having issues with the driveshaft leaking from the transmission. The car has an after market driveshaft, I had them replace the seal after I had done it and it still leaked. They didn't catch that the driveshaft was the issue being undersized. I believe they damaged the driveshaft when installing the seal since the carrier bearing went bad very shortly after. On the 3rd time being there for the driveshaft, he told me I needed a new driveshaft and it would cost $850. I was surprised at this price and he told me that a Subaru one would be double that. Blatant lie. Subaru drive shaft was around $740 but I was able to get it for around $560 at Subaru with price match. I also asked them to diagnose a shutter/jolting feeling in the car and they were never able to feel it. It only does it every day since so I'm not sure how they didn't feel it. That leads us to the most recent issue which is the coolant leak. The engine was resealed with a new water pump kit installed. There is now a coolant leak that I found when I went to change my oil. The drain plug they installed previously during an oil change 5000 miles after the engine reseal was so tight I couldn't remove it. I took the car in for these 2 issues and they told me there was no leak. I have photos of a wet oil pan and they say they see no fluid at all. They also missed things they previously recommended replacing that haven't been changed but managed to come up with a whole new list of things I need. Some of which has been replaced recently. John the service advisor was fine, but still unfortunately useless. Tony my previous service writer, the one that lied to me, is rather rude and short with you. Do not take your Subaru to this place. At best they are head gasket changers and not Subaru techs. I have no doubt been a little difficult but I have had nothing but issues with them. Beware of S&S Auto Repair my name is Daniel and I had a very bad experience with this Repair shop. 1st I never got a $25 discount for my first visit. I was quoted a price for an oil change. When I got the bill it was much higher than the quote. I ask the girl at check out way it was much higher. She said she would have turn it over to I guess her boss. Then she came back to desk with a reduction. Then the second job I ask them to check a couple of things. I have noticed a small leak in my garage. They checked my car and to my surprise I was told that one of my head gaskets was blown. To Repair they quoted me $350.00 and he was also checking my interior light for a burnt out light. Ok come back saying the light fixture needed replaced and quoted me $169.00 for a new fixtures. Well I told him I would have to wait for when I have more funds. Long story short I had another Repair shop check the head gasket and interior light. This shop said the light was just turn off and the head gasket was in good shape. The leakage was from another job timing belt and was still under warranty. This Repair shop took care of the very small leakage under warranty and I didn't pay a dime. BEWARE OF THESE GUYS. Same experience as the other 1 star reviews. This place seems to operate on the sunk cost fallacy. They charged me a few hundred bucks to do a diagnosis. Which I understand labor costs but $130/hr is steep. How much of that makes it in the hands of the mechanic? Then once I sunk a couple hundred bucks into a diagnosis they hit me with a $2400 estimate on $500-1000 worth of work. The price they quoted for one part was $100 more than I could buy it from the dealership... I'm 80% sure I only needed one repair done, not the 2 they quoted. So I've sunk $200 into a diagnosis, what do I do? Call my small town mechanic an hour a way and get a second quote: $300, parts included. The people in the shop are courteous. I want to believe they are good, decent folk. The top level decision maker in the company on the other hand knows exactly what he's doing. Cosmic retribution is one hell of a force. read more

Great group of people work here. I was from out of town traveling through and had car issues. They were booked up solid. They called around and the earliest anyone could look at my car was the next day. They fit me in the next day to get looked at. They found problem but also was honest with me that I could probably drive it if necessary. I decided to drive back to Indiana and get fixed there. They charged me half of what I was expecting. They ran up her total without her full understanding, and then would not release the vehicle to her until she paid in full, around $6000 for a transmission and other "charges." I from Dallas and passing through Chattanooga, my heater hose busted. after 3 days in the shop they did a good job of fixing it ($600.00 for a heater hose) couldn't get to it the first day, needed parts on one day, and all day to fix it, They used the down days to there advantage, They wanted to up charge me over &6,000.00 for extras. They said i need a new Transmission 4.500, new brakes 600, U joints 400, Radiator 700, A Catalytic converter 1000, although i drove the car into the shop. I have taken a lot of work to S&S, and spent many thousands of dollars. This used to be a reputable shop with solid communication and credible work and repair. It is unfortunate the direction S&S has taken. With three locations now, it is clear they are driven to run up costs. When you bring them a car with a known specific issue, they like to add 5-10 "mechanical concerns" that really do not need attention. This was proven by me getting a second opinion. My son dropped his car off to have the air conditioner checked out. They charged him $200 for what other shops charge $70 to do the analysis. The $200 charge did included a charge of $100 for the one can of R 134 Freon that sales retail for $7. They told him the air conditioning compressor was bad and also told him he needed & oil change and transmission flush because the "Auto Check report" they ran on his car said it was due. A good mechanic would have pulled the dip sticks and looked at the oil and transmission fluid and saw that both fluids were clean because they were serviced just two days before. The shop is new and clean but beware of smiling faces. They up charge and over charge for parts and labor. We paid them the $200 fee and left without having any work done before they could overcharge any more and run the bill higher. My son's car was repaired later at another shop for 1/3 less than S&S wanted. read more

They way overcharge for parts, and bad to upsale for things you don't need. I was quoted a starter for $325 with a 3 year warranty. I bought a new starter at O'Reilly's for $189 with a Lifetime Warranty and took it to them. They wanted to do over $1500 worth of additional repairs that did not pertain to the immediate problem at hand which I declined. Otherwise, they are very nice people. We evacuated to TN from Florida after moving across country two weeks prior. We had an oil leak and we were also in desperate need of an oil change. I found S&S on yelp and decided on them based on reviews. I couldn't have been happier with my choice! Their staff is very professional and friendly! I left my car there and had a call within about an hour about the problem with the leak. They also mentioned my front brake pads were in need of replacement (which I knew about but hadn't taken care of before.) They told me the car would be ready by 2pm the following day. I got a call at around 945 the next morning telling me the car was ready. They told me the approximate cost upfront but I paid less than what was originally quoted. I had an emergency issue with my car before making a long trip back to Florida the next day and I saw S&S had a 5 star rating. I went to your establishment after a referral from East Ridge Auto Electric Co to fix an AC problem with my vehicle. This would be a referral that I would come to regret. I dropped off my vehicle on 06/30/2021 at 8:05 AM and was told when I arrived at the lobby that in addition to the fee to look at it I would be charged a fee to replace the refrigerant if they had to pull a vacuum. I agreed at the time as the cost could be put toward the repair if I authorized it. A few hours later I was contacted with an estimate that was several hundred dollars more expensive than your competitors and only just shy of the cost of having it done at the dealership. The estimate included a new compressor and refrigerant, front axle cv joint, oil change, air filter change, and tag light with a total cost of $1,916.62. The service rep John Cantrel also informed me that the transmission fluid looked dirty as well. This is when I started to regret taking my car to your facility. On June 24, 2021 I had changed the oil and transmission fluid by D&M auto. When I asked the rep about it I was told well we just go off the car fax and it wasn't listed there. This became the basis of my decision to not authorize the work as what caliber of a worker would exclusively go off the car fax to determine if a car needed an oil and transmission fluid change. After calling around I found a mechanic that would do the work for $1,200 plus tax for the CV and AC repair vs the $1,800.00 I was looking at your place. I called shortly after to let your company know not to do the work in which the rep tried to persuade me to do the work by saying that you all use higher quality parts. The compressor I was looking at with the other mechanic had a life time warranty vs your 3 year warranty. Even when I explained this and the difference in the cost the rep tried to come back again to ask if I still wanted the relay sensor for the AC again I told them take it all off as no work is being authorized. It was only then the he did so and I came by to pick the car and left with a bill of about $200 ($96.88 for the labor, $80 for parts minus a $25 coupon for first time appointment). This seemed rather high as the technician obviously didn't do a very good job of looking over the car if they were using Car Fax to determine if the car needed an oil and transmission fluid change as for the parts cost, the car uses standard R134A refrigerant. A 20 oz can of this can be picked up from Walmart for $20. According to the dealership it only takes 1lbs of refrigerant to charge the system. Based off this experience I can not recommend anyone come to your establishment as not only were you higher in price than everyone bar the dealership to get the work done you also charged excessively high amounts for refrigerant. Not to mention using CAR fax as a baseline for transmission and oil change is laughable at best. The cherry on top was the notes on the estimate that said "AC compressor, AC magnetic clutch relay ,AC drier 5.0 also was low on refrigerant may have a small leak in system could not find one at this time y'all need to add dye". Shouldn't the cost of looking at the AC include using dye to properly diagnose the problem? read more
