Two big branches from a couple of Australian trees that are like eucalyptus trees hit our roof. McClenahan's were very responsive and came to remove them with their chipper. Two and a half weeks later, after getting alternative bids, they came ahead of schedule with a lift and very professionally removed the two large trees. The crew asked me about sprinklers as they had to work with big logs near their controls that stuck up out of the ground - I assured them that they were turned off and not to worry. They were very careful to return to their yard to get boards to cover my lawn before moving their lift on to it. I had said I didn't mind any damage to the lawn as it's not the greatest lawn and I could easily reseed and dig it over. Highly recommended. The crew are the best at cleaning up of any of the arborist firms we've used in over 25 years in Portola Valley. I am delighted the trees are gone - the garden is much lighter and I don't have to worry about branches hitting my head outside. The trees had dropped a branch 16 years earlier that went through the pantry wall and on two other occasions had dropped branches almost as high as the house on the lawn that I had had to saw. Our heritage oak tree was diagnosed with heartwood and sapwood decay. Several tree limbs also hovered over live power lines. It was important for us to work with a reputed firm. We spoke to a few arborists and decided to work with the McClenahan team. John McClenahan diagnosed the health of the tree and promptly provided an arborist report to be submitted to the city for approval. His brother, Josh, then coordinated with the city utility folks to safely work on tree limb removal overhanging power lines. It was a very complex job that required collaboration with multiple parties. Both brothers, John and Josh McClenahan, were excellent at communicating with me throughout the process. They were also familiar with working with City authorities and getting street encroachment permits. I don't understand the negative reviews I'm reading but my experience this morning was top notch. Appt was 8am and they came on time. I had TONS of brush from cut trees and branches and they were done chipping and hauling away everything in 55 min. They left the place very clean as well - they blew the excess material off of my driveway; I didn't expect that. Juan and Angel were EXCELLENT; I can't say enough good things about both of them. We have 3 birch trees that were planted together 4 years ago. I noticed 3 weeks ago the branches of the middle tree had started to droop quite a bit. We first checked to make sure the drip irrigation was working and gave it an extra deep watering, but it didn't change. So I called a local tree service recommended on Yelp, who then referred me to S.P. McClenahan that specializes in diagnosing potentially diseased trees. Apparently most arborists do not. I worried they'd give a ridiculously high estimate, being based in Portola Valley. Miguel came out as scheduled a few days later, promptly on time. He was able to tell me the tree was not suffering from any insects, parasites or disease. He showed me some of the leaves were sunburnt from the recent heat wave and being the furthest from the lawn, its roots probably hadn't yet reached underneath the lawn to get the extra water source of water like the others. He instructed me where to move the drip heads and how much extra watering to give it before winter comes along to try and nurse it back to health. If all goes well with continued watering come spring, he thinks it will recover. He also gave me advice on the best times of year to prune to avoid pest infestation. I'm glad he was honest and didn't recommend a lot of needless spraying or what not, just to make a buck, as some services might have. Great service. I had interviewed a couple of tree services and decided to go with S.P. McClenahan. Miguel did the initial consultation during which we walked through my front and back yards and assessed the state of all the trees, which were planted 7-8 years ago and hadn't been serviced since (my bad). Miguel was very knowledgable about all the trees, quickly identifying ones that had been infected with a fungal disease or sunburned. He explained how S.P. McClenahan is very careful to disinfect their tools between each job so as not to transfer diseases from one property to another (and that many tree service providers don't). Maybe it was just a good story but I fell for it. I received a proposal within 5-7 days, and the crew was on the property the next day. They were friendly, polite, worked very hard, and cleaned up everything by the end of the day. Very happy with this service. I have crepe myrtle trees and wisteria that are blooming now, so I have to bring back S.P. McClenahan to work on those toward the end of winter per their recommendation. Oscar's crew showed up on time and did a great job trimming our walnut and Hollywood juniper tree. They cleaned up professionally and I was very pleased. Then I got the invoice and was surprised to see I was charged for "Extra Work." Although we gave some specific instructions to the crew about trimming to clear the roof, I didn't realize it was considered "extra." I do appreciate that Jeoff, our consultant, waived the extra fee and educated me on their protocol for any future jobs, of which I'm sure there will be. read more

They even left some wood for us to bring up to the cabin! We hired them to take out a 60 foot tall cedar tree in our front yard, which was quite the task. I couldn't be happier with the result, especially as I was concerned about low-hanging wires around our house. They were very aware of where these wires were, and did a very professional job overall. I've hired professional tree trimmers for years and my trees have never looked this beautiful! Chris was my arborist and he and his crew clearly know what they're doing. I am the son of a tree man and In all my life I have never seen such non professionalism. The actual work they did on my CA inland oak was minimal and the damage they incurred on my garden and landscaping was outrageous. Not only did they thrash my garden by dropping brush limbs on just about every bed in the yard they damaged fences and sprinklers. When all was said and done they left the yard blanketed with leaves and twigs (I cant see my lawn), and wont be back until the next day to clear it even though they even used MY rake on other parts of the yard. When I called their office to express my displeasure with their crew they just gave me a brush off. Unprofessional, untrained, and to top it off none of the crew spoke English fluently enough to communicate any of this to. All in all, unacceptable. read more

We had an 80 foot pine tree with a four foot trunk in the corner of my mothers back hard over shadowing 4 properties. Even worse, it was seriously mixed in with the power lines to the extent that 2 of the five the contractors we brought out to quote opted to no bid. I was very impressed from my interactions with McClenahan and by their reputation and was glad to find they had the best quote. Chris was great to work with the entire time. My mother passed away as we were in the process of getting the removal permit from the city which threw our schedule back a month. McClenahan was totally understanding and flexed their schedule to accommodate us. It took 3 days to clear the lines, remove the manageable limbs and finally to bring in a large crane that brought the large sections out over the houses from a neighbor's driveway. I called McClenahan on a Thursday afternoon and they were there by Friday morning to get it taken care of. The office staff is friendly and helpful and professional. We called McClenahans for help with masses of caterpillars infesting our 2 over-100-year-old oaks. We've used them for our tree care for decades; in fact they just finished a $4000 job on the selfsame oaks and other large street trees. They said they'd already sprayed in Vintage Oaks and wouldn't be coming back for 3 weeks. I'm so disappointed in their lack of response to the caterpillar crisis; we have them all over the place, crawing up the house, coming in our clothes. Yech. read more

McClenahan was responsive, competent, & courteous, but not professional. I hired them to bring down a large locust tree so there was a lot of mess. My advice is to be sure to see the workers during & towards the end of each day. The first day, they left litter in the back yard. The next day, they left the job without putting back the heavy potted plants we have, or the benches & chairs. They had put them in the shed. The front and back yards were full of saw dust. They offered to come back today to pick up, but I did not want to leave work to meet them. read more

McLenahan removed a huge 65 year old dying maple from in front of our home. Large limbs were threatening to fall on our home. Access to this tree was limited by the geography and hardscape of our house. Nevertheless, the were able to move an enormous truck with a 100 foot boom to our site and remove the tree with no damage to our home or landscape. They cleaned up all mess and completed the job in only 5 hours! read more

I called McClenahan Co. for trimming of 3 medium size fruit trees: Mulberry, 2 lemon trees, and fig. The person who came to assess and give us a quote said he knew these trees well and gave us a quote for $425. The day the work was scheduled he didn't come and 2 others came who had no idea which branches to cut! They kept asking us if they should cut each branch. We were disappointed and called the company and the original person came back and did some pruning but exactly 9 months later the trees over grew and the mulberry was worse than ever tangled in power lines and taking up a lot of space. I called to ask why this is happening and they said when you trim it only makes it worse with the growth. To the point where I asked whether not trimming at all would have led to smaller trees and they said yes!!! When I explained that the tree is tangled in power lines and it seems we wasted $420, he said he would come back Jan/Feb of this year and cut it back but would charge us and give us a slight discount. He never came. We wasted money and were given false information. read more

Just had McClenahan's come out to fix a tree in our front yard that had a limb failure a few weeks ago, and trim the rest of my trees - a couple of birches, a liquid amber, Japanese Maple and a few other smaller trees. They were wonderful! I had been using another tree service for a number of years who have also been very good but M's gave me a competitive bid, they are local and also have a good reputation, and so I thought I would give them a try. Everyone was on schedule, courteous, professional, competent, hard working, friendly with a sense of humor to boot. (Has anyone else noticed this is an extremely rare combination in service industries?) They even fixed one of our wind chimes that had been broken for ages. I will definitely use them again and recommend them highly. I dealt with Miguel for the quote and consult. Pedro and Angel did the trimming. I will ask for them all again and given their longevity with the company, I'm confident they will be back. read more
