Simone and Sebastian did a fantastic job catering my wedding at the Brazilian Room in Berkeley, CA this past June! I primarily communicated with Simone via email and she was extremely responsive throughout the entire wedding planning process. I was constantly peppering her with questions and she was always kind and patient with me, a nervous bride, as I was trying to pull together this event for 115 people. I appreciated her flexibility as the final touches of the event were coming together. On top of her catering expertise, Simone's professionalism and knowledge as an event planner was infinitely helpful. I initially met Simone and Sebastian at a Brazilian Room open house and was able to try some of their food samples. Let's just say their samples made an impact and none of the other catering options stood a chance after that. Simone helped me with creating the menu for the night and ensuring that I had a good variety of main courses and sides to satisfy the needs of my group. We decided to skip the traditional wedding cake and instead opted for some of the fun dessert options on Simone and Sebastian's menu. The banana pudding was an absolute hit! Overall, I had such an awesome experience with Simone and Sebastian. The two of them, along with their staff, were extremely kind and professional. I finally lost count of how many people came to me during and after the wedding to rave about their food, which should tell you everything you need to know. I am very disappointed about this cater, as they have been the most challenging vendor to work with. We tried to work with this cater since early March and we have told them about our timeline. It has been a few month, they have shown zero progress in their work over the past few months, significantly impacting our wedding planning process. Their level of irresponsibility and inefficiency is astounding, and they consistently fail to fulfill their promises. If you don't want to work with someone you can't reach out to them by phone, someone who reply your email in weeks or months and someone who always fail to meet their promises, DON'T pick them as your cater! Something that means everything to us and our families. Dead-end phone calls to a dead phone number, excuses about their phone service being 'resolved', then more emails and voicemails sent to them, all sent to the ether. No customer, no wedding couple deserves to be shunned. Ever. Especially when we've abided by every line-item rule this caterer requires to be met. S+S Gastro Grub catered my husband's 50th "Speakeasy" birthday party and I wish I could give them more than 5 stars! Simone's attention to detail from start to finish was outstanding. Simone handled all of the rentals, food and drinks. The food was delicious - we still have friends talking about the tomato soup shots and grilled cheese - and the staff was so friendly and professional. The bartender, Will, was a BIG hit, he made a great cocktail and was super fun! The party was so good that no one wanted to leave at the end and Simone and her staff graciously extended the party by an hour. I had been drooling over delicious postings from S+S on Facebook for a while after seeing them suggested on a community page so when it was clear we were going to have a different type of Christmas this COVID season, I jumped on the chance to order their Christmas dinner to treat myself...and to save time and energy, super important with a toddler and newborn! I was concerned about our reheating the goodies as our oven was out, but they responded promptly with thorough suggestions so I felt comfortable giving it a go. Thank goodness! We started with the octopus terrine and dramatic squid ink sauce, which was a nice light appetizer. The prime rib was seasoned and cooked perfectly, their garlic confit yukon gold mashed potatoes were lick the spoon delightful, the Mac and cheese was a perfect balance of sharp cheese and crab. We also ordered some horseradish cream that I gobbled up with the prime rib, and I generally do not like horseradish. The buche de noel was a showstopper and worth the money! I had their food years ago and it was so good. Had always wanted to get it again but how often can one fake his/her own wedding or funeral just to hire a fantastic catering service?!? Thank god they are now offering weekly home delivery to the Bay Area, and curbside pick-up at their Oakland site, during this ongoing and necessary Covid-19 Shelter-In-Place!!! Their weekly offering changes (yay I love variety!) with a rotation of marinated meats and fish (cooked or uncooked versions), delicious sides of vegetables and carbs, and even nutritious options for cats and dogs! Seb and Simone are my absolute favorite caterers. They always use the best quality ingredients and will make you drool each time you get their food. With shelter in place, they are busting their butts to continue to help the community, neighbors, and their S+S team. Now add to it they are taking home orders and delivering!!! Win for us!!!!!! Last week, I ordered the miso cod, wagyu bulgogi, smoked mac and cheese, and chicken feet (for the pups). Good lawd it's delicious!!! The wagyu bulgogi is incredibly tender and well marinated. Korean here. I usually have to doctor up premarinated bulgogi. Not the case with theirs. Damn, got me salivating just writing about it. And the cod. Thank you so much for portioning it out and packaging it separately! The cod was the perfect balance of firm and buttery. (Still drooling) Shhhhh dont tell but there was also smoked mac and cheese. If anyone asks, I dont know where it all went....I swear I didn't scarf it all down and offer the tiniest portion like that's all I ordered..... One of my besties, Susy C., made me cry this morning when she told me she ordered a home-cooked meal for me and my partner. We had been sick for over a month and barely recovered, and the BF was only cooking foods with cumin in it. So when I learned we were going to have awesome food delivered, I got really emotional because my heart truly lies in my tummy. We just had the squid ink paella for dinner. Let me just say that at first, we thought it wasn't going to be enough for 2 because we are fatties and we were on the verge of getting hangry. I thought it would be a good idea to skip lunch and made the BF eat a lighter "breakfast" because he had just woken up 4 hours before dinner. Needless to say, we didn't even bother separating the food into 2 equal portions and dove right into the to-go container like savage animals. We ate our entrees w/ a side salad that needed getting rid of, and I have to say that the portion was just perfect for 2. We are both so full and satisfied that the BF is back in bed, and I'm on the couch about to catch up on Insecure w/ my hand tucked into my sweats like Al Bundy. We also got their Rosemary Moro Blood Orange Syrup and Moro Blood Orange Aperol Marmalade - BF is already planning on using his mixology skills to make us cocktails for the weekend, while I'm brainstorming on what to make with their Heirloom Chicken Ginger Turmeric Bone Broth. I've known about S+S for several years now but have never had an event to go to them for. Recently they've been offering smaller weekly orders during the shelter in place order - what a wow moment. We ordered the southern style pulled pork, smoky glazed asparagus, and arroz verde. Beyond delicious. Not only is the good been amazing, but everything about the process of order and deliver has been easy and straightforward. I'm secretly hoping they keep this smaller menu going after our stay in place orders are lifted. Would definitely order again ~~~Update~~~ 05.09.10 I'm not usually too effusive in reviews, but we can't stop ordering - it's been consistently beyond amazing. Tacos, vegan ceviche, baby kale salad, you think it can't get better and then the next menu comes out. This week's pot pies and lemon merengue tart tipped the scales. We were planned on waiting to have some of that tart as an after dinner desert - but when I peaked inside the box, a taste test seemed like right thing to do. I just came home from Eat Real Festival at Jack London Square in Oakland, where I first met S+S Gastro Grub. I'm very drawn to gastreo pubs but I rarely find them locally! So boy was I happy to find them!! The staff were super friendly and they've only been doing this for a little under a year. They do catering parties too! I was speaking with Sid and he told me this (super nice guy!). I'm so happy to see more mom and pops local businesses popping up! Here's what I had: "BACON & EGGS" - $4 63-degree egg, crispy pork belly, kimchee puree This tapas-style portion bundle was exquisite. The egg looks half poached and semi raw but it was like the sauce to my unctuous and cripsy pork belly I was dip it in! And to compliment the salty greasy yummy savory is the sweet and a tiny bit tangy with a tiny subtle kick kimchee that is pureed. I loved the portion since everything was quite rich! We used S&S Gastrogrub for a family member's 100th birthday party in 2013. We were amazed by the quality and quantity of the food and Simone and Sebastian's attention to every element of the party. Everyone had nothing but praise for the party. Fast forward to June, 2023 when we decided to host another milestone birthday at our home for 35 guests. It was the best decision we could have made to reach out again the S&S Gastrogrub. I really appreciated the ability to communicate by emails and by Simone's warmth and responsiveness. We were able to choose the menu based of the descriptions of the dishes and to choose the serving items, tables and chairs. On the day of the party, Simone and Angela arrived and began setting up quickly and efficiently. Once the tables and chairs were out, the kitchen filled with the most wonderful aromas. It is really a gift to have Simone prepare a meal for you. Once again, everything was delicious, in more than ample quantities, and served quickly. Once the meal service concluded and while we were enjoying dessert, Simone and Angela quietly cleaned everything up and left the kitchen in perfect condition. After the party, had leftover Parker house rolls which are buttery, large and warm, made from a brioche dough. The next morning, we sliced them and made French toast which instantly transported me to my Louisiana childhood when my mom served us " pain perdu", made from her brioche. My fiancee and I really wanted to have them as our caterer for our wedding, but after sending our proposed menu in March and was told we'd recieve the proposal soon, I still didn't hear from them by the end of April. I had to reach out to them from their website contact form after not hearing back from an email. I heard back right away on 4/28 and was told I'd receive the proposal the next day. Didn't hear back of course, so I heard from them again on 5/2 saying the proposal would be finished then or the next day 5/3... I ended up giving up and moved on to another caterer. We had an afternoon/evening event at our home for about 40 people in May 2022. We engaged S+S for the catering. They listened to what we were looking for, made some great suggestions, and sent us their plan. At their request, we sent them the list of serving items we would have on hand (plates, cups, etc.) to ensure we had enough -- after looking at what we bought, they saw that we hadn't ordered coffee service even though we had hot beverage cups, and asked if we wanted to add it! The food was beautifully presented course after course. The roast pig they cooked in the front yard was very yummy, as were the sides, desserts, halal choices, etc. Their people were SO friendly and helpful throughout the event, and they made sure that everything was perfectly clean before they left. In my experience, Sebastian and Simone (s+s) can do basically anything in the kitchen. Their pig roasts are legendary, but more recently, they've cooked up some of the most inventive paellas I've ever had. At a recent event I attended, they served up a paella topped with 48-hour short ribs, beef tongue, oxtails, and tendon, and it was served with horseradish aioli. It was one of the most delicious, complex, and addictive things I've ever put in my mouth, especially if you got some tendon. At this same event, they made a paella that featured both uni, Dungeness crab, and quail eggs, but I'd take the beefy paella over that any day. I know they've done a lot of weddings recently, and I only wish that I had been invited to those receptions because I'm confident that an s+s catered wedding is some of the best wedding food you'll ever have. Seriously, when was the last time you went to a wedding and raved about the food? Our wedding reception was an awesomely beefy event at Lawry's in Beverly Hills nearly 10 years ago, and everyone raved about the food and the experience. (Lawry's kills HoPR, IMHO) But if we were getting married today, I'd want s+s gastro grub to do a pig roast and paella instead. The first S+S event that I attended was a pig roast almost two years ago. I didn't know either of the Ss (aka Simone and Sebastian) at the time, but they treated me and everyone else there like family. Since then, I've had the pleasure of attending a variety of different types of their events (as other reviewers have mentioned) from their pop-up venture at Cosecha, their various private dining events, and their participation in the Behind the Cart (BTC) series. Without question, each and every time I'm blown away by the quality of their food, the innovation they employ, and the freakish deliciousness that comes with every bite. I've been fortunate to get to know Simone and Sebastian since that first pig roast, and now it's clear to me that the food they produce is a perfect refection of their personalities and their food philosophy: down-to-earth and inviting, but with a innovative and polished flair. I've never had a bad meal with these folks and I think it's safe to say that if you leave an S+S dining experience hungry and unsatisfied, the problem there may very likely be you. :) read more

I don't recall how it came about, but I've been following S+S on both Facebook and Instagram for some time now. Everytime I see their photos, I salivate. One thing I've noticed about their catering, is that is never the same thing and everything looks so eclectic. This past Saturday, I was finally able to experience S+S and it was glorious. My friends had a pig roast at their place, which included seafood paella. Everything was amazing. The pig was damn good. Chop Bar pig roast are now a thing of the past for me. We had Simone and her team cater our graduation and more celebration and it was simply OUTSTANDING. The food is higher quality than most, with farm fresh vegetables and the highest quality meats. Some of the simplest items (like pan con tomato/lardo) were exquisite reminiscent of the best restaurants in Barcelona. Their serving staff and bartender were calm under pressure and polite beyond expectation. 1 day prior to the event, we had extra guests RSVP and Simone was very adaptable to help us figure out how to manage. Last year I finally had the opportunity to dine at an event held by S+S Gastro Grub, a feast prepared by the legendary talented duo of Simone and Sebastian. I actually have heard of them way back during the Eugepalooza and Jam With Your Clam Out fundraising days in SF (you know when Yelp was more of a startup than the machine it is now), and salivated at many of their creations. And it was not until sometime last year that I was able to fully experience and understand what they can do. I came with an open mind, and finished the meal feeling enlightened and invigorated. Never have I tasted down home American food this compelling and brilliant! We started off with a summer salad: of compressed Sharlyn/Honeydew/Sugar Kiss/Watermelon, served with sous vide Pearl Onions,Espelette Pepper Oil, and Tapenade. The colorful arrangement and visual appeal alone catches one's eye. This salad was a very delicate balance of not just fruit and vegetables, but also various textures, mostly from the compressed fruit where the intensity is magnified. The hickory smoked macaroni & cheese left me craving for more after tasting it, and I am not much of a mac cheese fan. There was definitely a Béchamel / Mornay sauce feel to the mac cheese. Absolutely gorgeous and stunning down to the taste. The smoked for 12 hours beef brisket (with apple, hickory and pecan wood chips) was phenomenal. I dare say this is the best BBQ brisket I've had to date! The lamb belly ribs were incredible and quite the crowd pleaser that evening. Pulled pork made from pork butt? I had no idea BBQ could be done like this. Charcoal Grilled Corn with sweet coconut cream sauce - a spin on a classic. Slathering butter on top of corn is tried and true, but S+S version of this made me appreciate corn in another light. This was really good. Last but not least were some samples of oven roasted crispy pork skins. These were so delicious that it reminded me of many things, and almost had a fresh Japanese rice cracker (senbei) crispy element to it, but with the full aroma of a delectable piece of crispy skin (like the kind from a Cantonese roast pork). In watching S+S prepare, plate, and serve the food, you can tell they give it not just their all, but they work really hard into doing things right their way. Now I understand what they mean by "Oakland Flava, Napa Roots". They really enjoy and are passionate about what they do. The results shine and speak for themselves. read more

Simone and Sebastian are a lovely couple who I've had the pleasure of knowing for about five years now -- and they just catered our wedding this last weekend! Getting straight to the point, the food was a HIT! Even days later, comments from various wedding guests raving about how impressed they were by the delicious food served continue to be received. I have the feeling that many of our engaged friends, who were in attendance, will likely consider using their services soon enough! Another thing -- food and catering services aside, Simone helped me tremendously with a lot of wedding preparation in general. She listened to my concerns about family drama, not having enough wine, and et cetera. She basically served as a wedding therapist in many ways, so to speak! Epic birthday party with Simone and Sebastian. I met Simone and Sebastian years ago when I used to hang out with the OG Elite Yelpers back in the day. It was nice to be around my tribe - who doesn't want to talk about food all day long? They are "Living the dream" and doing what they love - and that shows in their food. I wanted to have a memorable get together with friends for a dual birthday celebration and immediately thought of S+S Gastro Grub. As you can see from their pictures, they have lots of experience making some kickass paella. I've had my share of paella and that can be a hit or miss, but for my party they knocked it out of the park. Simone and I emailed back and forth about the menu and I decided on their combo paella and 63 degree egg with creamy grits, kimchi puree and crispy pork belly. I also included bacon wrapped dates, harissa shrimp, kale salad, brussels sprouts and cookies and cream S'Mores. They came on time, took over my kitchen and made the most incredible food! Everything they made was of the highest quality and flavorful. I told friends who attended my party (who were mostly yelpers) that the food was yelp-worthy, and I've been getting texts and pictures of how much they loved the food and that it was GLORIOUS. Simone and Sebastian are the real deal. They are passionate about their creations and the care and artistry really shines through. We ask them to cater for our executive programs almost every month, for events ranging from one evening reception to four days of breakfast-lunch-dinner, for groups of 20 to 80. Grateful these 2 saved us through quarantine. I became a new mom this year and the weekly menu with freezable packs saved me a ton of meal prep time. They also deliver! What I appreciate most is instead of allowing the shutdown to bring them down, they thought outside the box by providing this weekly service. Wow! People RAVED about the food at our wedding. Absolutely delicious. Appetizers: mini crab cakes, watermelon gazpacho, and brûlée brie, apple, baguette. Salad: mixed greens with strawberries and walnuts and goat cheese. Mains: bbq lamb with mint jelly, king salmon with lemon cream sauce, and vegetarian paella. Sides: glazed asparagus and mashed sweet potato. OMG! Every bite was mouthwateringly delicious, and the presentation was beautiful! Service was impeccable. They were super accommodating for vegan or gluten free guests. Their staff has beautiful positive energy and were efficient and unobtrusive. Simone was our wedding day of coordinator. She was AMAZING! Helped us plan and get our timetable ready so that we could absolutely relax on the day of our wedding and not worry about a single detail. She was top notch. Filling our glasses at dinner to make sure we had enough bubbly. Telling us when to enter into the wedding ritual/ceremony and that all the guests were ready. Telling guests when we were making our grand entrance into cocktail hour so that we would feel like stars. Snapping photos. Getting some video. And making sure everything ran efficiently. We would recommend everyone to hire S & S Grub if you want food that will knock people's socks off, a friendly warm professional company that will take great care of you, and Simone if you need a wedding day coordinator or event planner. We hired S+S Gastro grub Catering for my mother's Celebration of Life event. The owner, Sebastian, went out of his way to make everything run smoothly. When we had glitches with the City of Oakland permits, he drove over to the fire station to take care of it personally, last minute. The food was delicious and beautifully displayed. My guests were especially happy with the cumin lamb skewers and the berry cobbler with creme anglaise. The crudite arrangement was like a piece of art. I had to tell several people that it was edible! Sebastian, his wife, and one other server were unobtrusive. The table was always clean, beautiful, and stocked with food but you seldom saw them working on it. Magic! I would hire them again for any elegant event. read more

I had an incredible experience with S+S Gastro Grub. They catered a recent party we held for around 60 people at the Julia Morgan Hall at the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden. I highly recommend them for their professionalism, the quality and uniqueness of the food, and their overall helpfulness. Yvonne was proactive and more than helpful - she helped us with a menu, suggested types of wines that would complement the menu and also suggested a beverage vendor. Moreover, she was incredibly patient with my indecisiveness. Simone and Sebastian were hands on with every part of the event. Their entire team helped us with every step of the way. The attention to detail was unparalleled - they weren't merely caterers; rather, they helped orchestrate the effortless quality of the entire event. They even helped us load up things after the event. The guests were astounded when they carried in a huge steaming pan of paella - people actually paused what they were doing and gasped and pointed. The aromas were amazing and the tastes and textures were a perfect blend. The bacon wrapped dates were phenomenal and people also loved the tortilla española w/chipotle aioli. The salad and cauliflower were also a big hit. Even their desserts were perfect - we especially liked the caramel salted caramel mousse french macarons. I can't recommend S+S Gastro Grub enough.
