We had this year's karaoke reunion here. Great sound system. Able to access the better karaoke versions of songs, namely Sound Choice and Sunray. Kia and Mel manned the karaoke booth. Both are excellent singers. A great time was had by all. It was also a memorial for Michael R, who recently passed away. A real great fellow and singer. Bittersweet. GF and I were in San Antonio for rodeo weekend. We shopped, dined, had a great day. Looking for a drink on the way back to the hotel she looked up local bars. Sure enough, SA Country Saloon was about a mile from where we were staying. We venture in and find a few men at the bar with a drag bartender. We order some drinks and head over to the pool tables. Conversation went something like: Me: Babe, this a gay bar. GF: Google said nothing about a gay bar! I pick up my phone and consult Yelp. Yep, gay bar confirmed. Have been going since way back in the mid 80s when the bar was called The Zoo. Ownership has changed over the years as has the name, even the clientele has as we age, but as the saying goes, some things never change. The bar has a great atmosphere and some great history, friendly staff, and an eclectic mix of clientele. If you're the uptight type, like to find fault in everything, or like being a jerk, this isn't your bar, for everyone else you'll have a good time. No connection I am aware of, but the name "The San Antonio Country" was historically the name of a bar owned by Hap (Happy) Veltman located downtown, Tesoro Petroleum purchased the land in the late 70s from Hap who then opened The Bonham Exchange. A historic "Rose Window" from The Country was relocated to the Bonham building. There is a lot of history associated with the "Zoo" building as well, a lot of what we take for granted now is in part due to this history. I'm sorry, I have been a longtime Patron and customer of this bar for almost a decade, even through the pandemic and changing locations. But they allow this line group dance group to come in during the week, and disrespect the whole lgbtq community. A couple months ago when I was at this location, the dance group was having some sort of a competition that took up the entire dance floor and bar area. One of the contestants, visitors, with busy yelling derogatory words across the Dance Floor to someone. Words like these are offensive to people in our community are hateful and ignorant. One of the bartenders went up after the next song and said hey guys be nice. And then one of the hosts of the event, got on the microphone and made a even worse statement about how they need to be nice because this is not a normal bar. The lgbtq community is not abnormal, there is nothing wrong with us, and you are a guest in an lgbtq safe space, this was disgusting behavior that as far as I know has yet to be addressed by the bar staff, Bart management, ownership, or the event organizers. I refuse to support an organization, this bar is going to get grouped in to personal bands, like Salvation Army, Chick-fil-A, and Hobby Lobby for me. Ridiculous because this part used to identify as an gay bar. But you wouldn't know it now because you walk in and there's no indication that this is a safe place for lgbtq people. No Flags no disco ball, no HRC stickers, no equality messaging anywhere in the bar location. They used to have display cases, and the tgra used to be prominently displayed. Just makes me sad, because I run an lgbtq nonprofit, I'm a former member of the lgbtq Chamber of Commerce board of directors, and do a lot of nonprofit work within the lgbtq community. After this incident, this is no longer a safe place for us. read more

Nice little club with great bartenders and serving drinks in red solo cups Music selection could be better but nice sized dance floor and plenty of seating as well. Pool tables and darts and clean bathrooms for women. Parking is a problem though and no security in parking lot as well as smoking area is right outside the front door which is not good for those that don't care to smell like smoke. I LOVE this place! I love to go with my LGBT friends. The karaoke nights are a blast and the dance floor is small but just big enough. I hate all country bars I have gone to, but this one is fun since they switch up the music. The atmosphere is very relaxing and the people and bartenders are very nice and personable. Great drink prices as well! Only downside is I am more of a beer person and they have no tap beer and no craft beers in bottles. Just the usual Dos, Coors Light, etc. read more

Nice! Very honky-tonk, if that's your sort of thing. It's a good change of pace from the worn-out bars and clubs on "The Strip." I especially loved how clean and NEW the place smelt. From what I can remember, the drink I had was OK. Maybe if I had stuck around for a 2nd or 3rd they would have gotten yummier ;) They were having karaoke the night we went. There was not a big crowd at all but for me and my boyfriend of 8 years, that's fine. We're not looking for a hook-up like most people who frequent the gay bars, just looking for a good time around some good folks. They've got a nice, open lay-out and a sunken dance floor area, with mirrors all along the walls. We will probably return on a random weekend to see what it's all about. read more

I also felt like I fit in as soon as I walked into the door. I moved here 11 months ago and didnt really make friends till I came to SA Country. In a matter of a few days I gained many new friends. First place I have ever danced with another man and it felt right! Awesome dance instruction for those of you who would like to learn. I with no reserve would say this is one of the best LGBT establisments I have been to. This started off as a decent alternative to downtown but has quickly faded in popularity. The crowd tends to consist mostly of lesbians and older men. They always seem to have an excuse as to why the crowd is thin. Here's the reason...nobody is going. They have their small group of usuals but new people come and go. New Favorite Dance Bar in town!!!!! This Place is a GEM!!! So its an actual Country Western Bar that is , just like Vinny H said; Huge and Clean! They have pool tables, darts, a nice sized bar, a great new wooden patio and excellent Bartenders! The owners are often there and you can tell there is a great sense of pride that they take with their bar. When things get busy which are Saturday Nights, they have no problem in helping out and keeping things running smoothly. The music is usually awesome and the Dj's take requests without that usual cold " I'm So Cool I'm a DJ" Attitude - which is a real nice change of pace. They have pretty good drink specials and its seems like the also do a lot of stuff in the community too , such as fundraisers and two stepping contest. I went out there for the first time and felt like I was immediately at home. It has a nice clean, fresh and well lit vibe to it which is a fantastic change from the run of the mill dingy country bar. It is great for a date or for parties which I have seen them have some cool birthdays. Fridays are great and I know at least one night of the week they do Karaoke. If you love to people watch Saturdays are wonderful cause the place fills in! There is a lot of free parking which is also a plus. The Bartender Wayne and the other Wolf who had served me several times were just phenomenal ; attentive and new what my friends and I were drinking after just a round or two. The place has great small details, like a disco ball cowboy boot, nice decor and clean bathrooooms! So if you love country music and you love good drinks and people then check this place out. The bartenders and staff are great, the bar and a bathrooms are very clean, but the owners David.H and Monte.C are the two rudest drama queens ever. They don't do anything but drink all day and night everyday at their bar talking down to anyone who has an issue or concern. If it wasn't for the staff this bar would be empty. This is the third time I have been here. First two times were fine. Nice bar, very clean. Went last night for a drink after returning from a birthday party. It was early so not that many people there yet. Evenly split between lesbians and gay men. I stood at the bar waiting for a bartender. They had three behind the bar. Two young guys and a woman. She seemed to be the manager. She was going through receipts facing away from the bar. One guy was working one side of the bar and the other my side. The one on my side was busy talking to his friends at the end of the bar. He must have passed me at least five times. Then he passed me again to refill drinks for some people who just came up to the bar. Then he went back to his friends. The women turned around and saw me. She was very friendly, stopped working on the receipts, and asked if I had been helped. She got me my drink, and even gave me the happy hour discount even though happy hour was officially over. I was about one minute from just leaving the bar. Thankfully she saved the day. I don't blame the bar. It really is a nice place. But I think the one bartender should pay more attention to the customers than to his friends. read more
