Ambiance: 5/5 I came here alone and without a partner, and I ended up being invited to dance so many times! At 7:10 pm, they start their dance lessons (usually two-step). It's not quite split into beginner, intermediate, and advanced, but rather they start at the very beginner level and move onto more immediate level by the end. The routine is very easy to follow. You don't need to know how to dance to participate. You don't need a partner. At the beginning of the dance lesson, the ladies line up on one side of the line and the gentlemen line up on the other. Whoever is across from you is typically your partner. After the dance lessons, it's free for all. They play music all night, with an occasional intermission of more youthful pop club style music and some line dancing. In addition, if you come later on and show them your military CAC card, you can come in for free. I've stayed here several times until 1 am, and felt very safe! I've also met numerous friends/dance partners throughout the 20+ times I've went. This is one of the main reasons I LOVE san antonio. read more

We come for the dance lessons and then we head home! I'm a lifelong formally trained dancer, my husband is not. I was so glad the lessons were broken down in a way that he got it all so quickly. Dancing is intimidating for those who aren't used to doing it. He was leading me around that floor and I was so tickled by it! There are typically a few extra single dancers around for those who don't have a partner so don't worry! We don't drink so we don't stay once it starts to get filled with people but it's so fun in those earlier hours. 10/10 suggest for regular two step or triple two step lessons. There's a wonderful dance instructor who on Friday demonstrated the complex move he was going to teach us, much to the gasps of people, but at the end everyone was doing it because he broke it down so well. The place is cavernous, dark, which is good for me I look better in the dark, and filled with ladies waiting to dance, which to my amazement young guys were oblivious to. I'm always out dancing here when I'm home or in town. They have college and teen nights where younger crowds can go out and have a good time as well as ladies night and regular entrance. Under 21 gets their hands marked and 21+ gets a wrist band. The bouncers will check everyone's ID unless you are very very clearly over 21. There are six different bar areas for your drink needs. There's also a mechanical bull you can pay to ride and a punching bag machine. There are free dance lessons with awesome, kind, talented instructors usually three times a week. You can walk all the way around the dance floor and there's a wide variety of seating. There's lots of really good dancers here that are happy to teach you some cool moves too. Even though I'm a regular here I do have a few things that bother me. Hand sanitizer is alway always empty, the paper towels in the bathroom are usually soaking wet sitting on the counter instead of in the dispenser, there's only free water for 21+ and only if you catch a bartender willing to give you a cup of tap water. Occasionally they will be lazy and just give you a bottle but usually they charge you. It's also common for the bartenders to be doing shots together or with other customers and ignore you. I've regularly asked my male friends to get me drinks since they don't get ignored. This isn't a huge problem since I'm not there to drink but let's be honest, a glass of tap water should be available for free a $10 cover is more than enough to make up for whatever alcohol under 21 isn't drinking. They do 15min of a pop/wrap/hip-hop/Latino mix between sets of country music where people throw napkins everywhere which makes the dance floor really slick and kind of dangerous to do dips or tricks. Watch out for some creepy older guys that will repeatedly ask you to dance. The bouncers are always walking about keeping an eye on things and are happy to talk to you or assist with anything if you feel unsafe. They will also ask you to spit out gum at the door and may ask to check your boots/baggy pant legs for weapons. Overall it's a great spot to hang out and chill out with some friends but same as anytime you go out be safe, stay with a group, and watch your drinks. read more

The ambiance was so much fun. A lot of space to dance, play pool sit or watch others dance. This building has two floors & it's an 18 & over club I believe. We went for a bridal party it was so much fun visiting from South Florida. Definitely should stop by and visit this place. I had no idea who was on the card nor was I familiar with the Fight label. When I was looking at the card there was only 1 comment and it said along the lines "Governale is going to win." I was all "Nooooo Way!!" I served in The Corps. with this guy, haven't seen or heard from him in over 10 years. He did great, the whole card was great. We had a very pleasant concert experience with one of my girlfriends. The overall atmosphere so amazing. There was a younger crowd for sure but for the most part everyone was very respectful. There were no bar fights or rambunctious guys messing with us. The bathrooms definitely could use more attention especially for events. Every bathroom visit we made seemed to be an increasingly disgusting bathroom. There was a women throwing up in a stall and another passed out at the exit. But aside from the usual things you'll find at any bar or club we were more amazed at how generally nice the people are. read more

Cowboys dance hall is the greatest dancehall in Texas!! Yes I said it! The music is a great mix between country and the occasional pop hits that gets everyone on the dance floor or line dancing. From professionals to beginners like me, they are out there! The staff is always friendly and the beers are cold -I'm talking label peeling in an ice bucket! Plenty standing room around the giant dance floor and many tables with seating. Cover is well worth it and not expensive compared to other clubs in San Antonio. Cowboys is so special I'd drive up on weekends even after I moved because there's no other dancing like it. Great for a variety of ages! From young college kids to the older cowboys who are willing to teach you some moves. The live music is always phenomenal as well! read more

Cowboys is really fun friendly environment. I made some really good friends there that will be my friends forever. There was food outside taco truck and a barbecue truck which were killer. I honestly had the best time working there. I made some good memories. The management is awesome. I really uplifting and supportive. I will be definitely going back to visit. There's a live band they switch out other country singers every now and then but they have a main band and singer and he is great. This place is a straight up joke. My friends and I showed up around 11, got inside relatively quickly and went to the bar... Next thing I know my friend is getting kicked out for going into a "private" section. Mind you, there was nothing indicating that the section was private. I followed her outside, where then we were met by 3 male bouncers.. All of a sudden they have their hands on me. So, I of course reacted with "get your hands off of me" in a sort of waving motion. Next thing I know all three guys are throwing me to the ground and on top of me putting me in handcuffs. Stating that they were "fearful" for their life. All of the bouncers then started screaming at me saying they were calling the cops. They sat me on the side walk and then started charging at my friends. Once one of them got close to my friend she screamed at him saying our Uber had showed up and they immediately let me out of the cuffs. This place has a bullshit of a owner who witnessed the whole thing and his only concern was which girl he was trying to end the night with. Went to cowboys for the first time the other evening with friends needless to say we will never be returning. We all went in around 10pm they took our money we danced and around 1:30am my friends outfit no longer fit the dress code all of a sudden and we had to leave. There are girls baring all and it makes no sense a little shoulder on a male who is fully clothed is a issue and after taking our money and having allowed us to stay majority of the night. Gave me a homophobic vibe and extremely sexist. I do not recommend this place to anyone who doesn't wish to support people being treated that way. read more

Updated review: An absolutely stellar establishment and the staff are totally awesome and friendly. In my 5+ years of going here, I have never ran into an unpleasant employee. Concert tickets are cheap ($10 for Roger Creager) but beer is still a bit stiff. $4.75 for domestics on concert nights. Since my last review (5 years ago) the place has gone smoke free and it is way more awesome than it used to be! Be prepared to stay late for a concert - Roger Creager didn't start until 11:30PM on 1/23/16. Not sure if this is up to the artist or the establishment. First time here and the men outside checking our ID was pretty entertaining. Once we got in, we paid $7 for admission. It smelled really bad in there, like a mildew soggy smell. We didn't get any drinks other than water. The crowd was young, like 18-25 years old and music showed. There was just the DJ, no band that night. I am in my 30's and this was not my jam. Arrived to our venue last night. Bought tickets online and was told that our tickets wouldn't work and we had to pay cash. Was pushed to the side. Asked where to purchase tickets at. Went to that entrance and they said we were at the wrong door and sent us out. I was getting ready to leave when I decided to ask one more guy that worked there. The only one that actually helped us out. He took us in and had them actually check our tickets and they worked. So I almost had to pay cash for tickets and waste my online tickets and fight for a refund because they had no idea what was going on. Once inside it was alright until the music started to play. It was blown out. The sound quality was so loud and poor. You couldn't hear the singers because it was so loud on the speakers and it was blowing your ear drums out and so high pitched. It was a terrible experience. Great artists but piss pour sound quality. I wish I could give a lower rating than one star. read more

I have two females in front of me to get into the place barely wearing anything all they did for them was check id and purse and when I get up there am told to button my shirt up all the way and everything out of my pockets to get metal detector all up in my shit. Once you go in music sucks, no place to sit and can't even find chalk for pool tables. Bathrooms are disgusting and if you drink under 21 you are swarmed with bouncers immediately and booted out. Again on the last one my fault it was my birthday and a buddy bought me 1 shot and was kicked out immediately. Forgot to mention prices to get in are out the roof especially if you aren't female. The drinks here are super cheap and the fun is all over. The have a huge dance floor, more than 6 bars all around the venue, plenty of sitting, amazing and friendly bartenders, tv's with great fights and sports on and let's not forget they also have some pool tables that for a very cheap fee you can play a couple of games. I am glad I came here it is a great time to immerse yourself in the fun of the country life. Indoor bull riding! This place is huge. It's the largest bar in south Texas. I think the only larger honky tonk out there is Billy Bob's in Fort Worth. This place is pretty pure Texan. How many bars out there have indoor bull riding?! There's a an area where they have a dirt covered floor, bleacher seats, and the proper pens for bull riding! They often do PBR bull riding events here, so saddle up! Unfortunately, they don't let the spectators participate. So there's no, "hold my beer" moments on the live bulls. However, they do have a mechanical bull if that's your thing. I've learned my lesson on that thing. Number one, don't talk smack to the bull operator. You're just going to have a bad time. Also, don't tie your hand to the bull, if you're going to get bucked off, just get bucked off. I barely walked away from this thing, after showing off to some Canadians who were visiting, staring wide-eyed in wonder at the mechanical bull. It was a matter of Texas pride to show them up, on behalf of every Texan. I lasted all eight seconds! You can thank me later. The next day, my thighs were deep shades black and blue. I came here for a political rally, which included the bands Los Callejeros de San Anto (Pinata Protest's conjunto side band), ShinyRibs, and Los Intocables along with various speakers. This cavernous space isn't the best place acoustically to hear a live show, but you can get in up close and get a good look. On my last visit, they didn't have any Lone Star Beer!!! What gives?! It's almost a crime (treason) to be drinking anything other than Lone Star in a cowboy dance hall. They even have the Lone Star neon signs and advertisements, to keep things looking authentic, but they didn't have a single drop of the finest alcoholic beverage in the world. They lost a star for that one. Also, they don't offer any craft beers. Take your pick between the major domestics or a Mexican beer. They do have a full liquor bar. Expect high prices- my beer was $5.75 for a 12 oz domestic. This is one of my favorite places to take out of state visitors, who have never seen a bar so big before, and let them take in the Texas traditions.
