I come to Philly every once in a while and I always try something when I come, and today was Saad's Halal Restaurant. This place is beyond popular as I walked in and there was a line and it was just loud. Not a bad thing, just shows that they don't play around here. The service was exceptional as the line did progress quickly, the man at the register easily understood the multiple meals, and the food came out quickly and was served to our table. I had the beef shawarma maroosh way which usually comes with beef, pickles, tomatoes, and garlic sauce (egg allergy so I removed it). It was so tasty, the flavors just went crazy. The rest of my family had the kefta kabob sandwich, cheesesteak (raved about and apparently very highly rated), chicken shish tawook sandwich, falafel with taboulay sandwich, and rice pudding (not pictured). Honestly, regardless of if you eat halal or not, this is a must try restaurant. This spot was recommended by a friend for me to visit while in Philly. I ordered a cheesesteak with lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions, and mayo . . . It was not it at all. I was upset and dissapointed at the lack of flavor. The meat was not seasoned at all and looked so plain. I on my are one half and pickled through the other half. Who do cheesesteak places not season their meat!? So irritating! The fries we ordered were also just plain. No hint of salt thrown on there before or after being cooked. I asked my friend what the deal was and I was informed I was supposed to ask for salt and pepper on the steak and also get sauce on the side for the fries. There's a reason Saads is a must visit whenever people come to visit Philly or have the privilege of being local. First off, staff are super nice. Secondly, the portions are HUGE. And thirdly and most importantly, the food is AMAZING. The chicken maroosh is a must get. Huge chunks of juicy seasoned chicken, fresh tomatoes and pickles, an addicting white sauce and fantastic crunchy yet plush bread. You cannot go wrong. Saad's is still as good as it was when I was first eating there as a college student. I've since moved further away, but that has only grown my appreciation for how special of a place it is. It really captures the best of Philly, from its generous sandwiches and cheesesteaks to the vibrant diversity brought by its immigrants. Also because I moved away, I've been partaking in dining in when I visit. You order at the counter and pay, and a worker brings your food to you along with utensils and fixings like ketchup and hot sauce. The service and old-fashioned interior really give it comforting American diner vibes. The chicken maroosh is still the king, and I almost always order that and a side of their especially crispy fries to share with my partner. It's only $22 and fills both of us up. This is hands down my favorite sandwich spot of all time! It really can't get better than this. I got their famous chicken Maroosh and it was perfection. They toast their bread on a panini press which results in a super crunchy exterior. Their chicken Maroosh comes with a generous heap of creamy garlicky white sauce that pairs incredibly well with the chicken. Every bite of this sandwich is well balanced with some freshness from the tomato, pickle, and parsley! They really don't skimp on the parsley as a topping. They're super generous with the amount of parsley that they put to the point where you can actually taste the fragrance of the parsley. I am blown away by how good this sandwich is and will definitely be back to try their cheesesteaks as well! If you like things spicy, the waitresses will give you some sriracha to top your sandwiches with. If you decide to dine in, you wouldn't have to pick up your order yourself as the waitresses will bring your food to your table. They're super attentive and if they notice that you're sharing the food, they will bring you extra plates, fork, and napkins. So I decided to grab a philly steak from Saad's as well as a lamb shawarma. Definitely worth it. The place was packed and I could imagine it is like this on the regular. Service was great, very friendly staff. The cheesesteak had a 20-30 min prep time, but perfectly reasonable as the line was long and the hoagies were made fresh to order. The lamb shawarma was packed with big chunks of well seasoned lamb, and fresh veggies. I was stuffed by the time I left the place and had plenty of leftovers for later. The mighty Saad's Halal, the legendary restaurant always mentioned first whenever Halal is requested in Philly. I was told that it would be home to the best grub food, so I was pleasantly surprised when I drove up to a respectable appearing corner store front, with a sign that implied a simple nobility - quite befitting the name. I picked up my order, but even from outside I could tell that Saad's would be a place I wouldn't mind sitting down to enjoy my meal. There is ample, comfortable seating and the restaurant appears clean. As for the fabled food: yes, the Philly cheesesteak delivers. Obviously if you don't eat Zabiha, you can have a cheesesteak from any of the city's most famous spots. The cheesesteak at Saad's can't match up to those, and yes, the lack of cheese whiz did disappoint me. But when you consider that the bread is freshly baked, perfectly toasted, and the ample meat filling is tastefully sautéed with peppers and onions to make a savory sandwich, you won't feel like you're missing out on too much at all. The "chicken marush" is another favorite of the crowds. Personally I felt like it was too much mayo, I could barely eat one half of the sandwich, but I can see why people would love it. The chicken cubes are so juicy and fresh, and the fresh veggies also help to counterbalance the richness of the mayo. All the meat was tender and everything was flavorful and seasoned well. My favorite was the chicken tawook. It was an excellent sandwich and really big. We shared the chicken tawook and beef shawarma amongst three people. The veggies and sauce that came with the chicken tawook were great. The fries too deserve a mention as they were crisp and seasoned to perfection. It's not easy to find the perfect fries. I highly recommend this restaurant! And, it is halal! I was a bit skeptical when I saw a YouTube video that proclaimed Saad's had possibly the best cheesesteak in the city. I thought to myself it's a halal restaurant not a cheesesteak shop. When I was craving a cheesesteak, I decided to try someplace new and order delivery from Saad's. The cheesesteak arrived still hot, it looked legit, and when I bit into I smiled as I realized it didn't just look legit but it was legit! Plenty of meat and cheese on a great roll. I devoured that first half quickly, as it was definitely one of the best cheesesteaks I've ever eaten. I added a side of potato salad as well. The yellow color let me know that was going to be legit as well, and it was. It wasn't as good as my mom makes it, but it was a very good potato salad. Chicken moroosh and an order of fries - you can split that between two people and have yourselves a nice lil lunch/dinner. The bread has the perfect amount of crunch, the garlic sauce is to die for, and the pickles add the perfect amount of acidity. Service is always speedy which is awesome but its a small spot so have a secondary location (like a park) picked out to potentially enjoy your food elsewhere. Got a cheesesteak from here and it was great. The place is a decent size and had enough tables for everyone there. We were a group of 6 people and were able to eat comfortably. Best fast Lebanese food in west Philly! Really kind people here, happy to talk you through the options. Order to go or to stay, discount is you pay cash. They have an entire vegetarian section of the menu, which is really helpful. There's a good lentil soup, salads, vine leaves, and various wraps including falafel of course. The felafel themselves are quite greasy but the wrap is a good balance of flavors and textures (pickles! Tahini!). We particularly enjoyed the spinach pie appetizer. They have some very strong juices in the side fridge, quite sweet, but also strongly ginger or whichever you get. They're serious about decor, only beautiful calligraphy, no representative art. Nice! I took a bite but had to stop a because of the meaty gamey taste. I was so confused about how this is considered a Philly cheesesteak until after I left, I realized adding the cheese (yes, on the "cheesesteak") costs extra, as does the peppers and everything else.
