Viet Ice Coffee: bold with hints of sweetness. Really good!

@fortunefoodfinds: "The past week was surely filled with a LATTE L.O.V.E. n' plen-TEA to eat + drink! A Fruity Pebbles Ice Matcha Latte, Glitter Lychee Dragon Tea, n' a Viet Ice Coffee that were all yuMmmy n' tasted great from SAAP SAAP HI. Now I need to give their food a try!" SERVICE: friendly n' accommodating INTERIOR: n/a EXTERIOR: You can find them at various events all across da island. On this visit they were a vendor at the Village Night Market that takes place on Saturdays. WAIT TIME: 5-10 mins PARKING: Pearlridge Sears lot OVERALL COMMENTS: the fruity pebbles ice matcha latte was true to its name. You can definitely taste the fruity pebbles yet it wasn't overly sweet, which was good. Wish the matcha shined through a bit more, but still a fun n' tasty latte. The lychee dragon tea was so refreshing n' full on tropical flavor. Enjoyed every sip n' the glitter also made it fun. The Viet ice coffee was really good, bold with hints of sweetness. I liked how each drink was different n' delicious!

Coconut Chicken Curry + Lemon Grass Chicken Combo Plate

I've been eyeing this spot for a while. They go to various locations but they seem to be consistently at UH Manoa on Monday and Wednesday mornings. I would recommend checking out their Instagram for their weekly schedule. I saw them when I was at the village night market at Pearlridge, the one every Saturday night. I ordered the combo plat with lemongrass fried chicken and chicken curry. My friend was the one who wanted the chicken curry so he seemed to enjoy it. It was alright to me, the chicken pieces were tender and the curry was loose & creamy, not strong in taste or spicy, reminds me of any other thai chicken coconut curry. The lemon grass chicken was fire, it was crispy and flavorful. They were small wings though, but each bite was packed with flavor, and the chili sauce was a must have combo with the wings. I also really liked the salad and the dressing it was very good. My friend ate most of the rice with the curry so I don't really have a comment about that. I would definitely recommend saap saap, and I am planning on trying their lao sausage the next chance I have.

What a bonus, happen to be at the family fair event, Bishop Museum which was put on by Hawaii USA FCU, this event also included a bento. After enjoying our bento dinner, I walked around looking for some desserts at the food truck and came across Saap Saap's HI food truck. I was already stuffed but ended up trying the mini bowl of purple rice & sausage bowl ($7.), OMG... Wow, the flavors was Saap Saap! & more stuffed, didn't make it to desserts. Not knowing anything about the business, while at the event I searched Yelp page and read some reviews and photos, bookmarked, follow the Saap Saap's Instagram page for their schedule, I kept trying to attend one of the pop ups but didn't work out until finally it happened! On Friday, 7/25. They were at the Calvary Chapel Food & Craft Fair, out in Aiea. It was so worth the drive! After walking around, I head straight to Saap Saap, I also got there early as I was worried they might sell out (yes. that good!) I really wanted more Lao sausage and purple butterfly pea rice, I got the combination plate with upgrade to papaya salad for $2. more. The plate is steep, comes out to $27. (taxes and upgrade) but it is so yummy & worth it, I treated myself, for such a long work week! Excited I finally got Saap Saap food again, I loved my plate, the flavors of the sausage, purple rice, Lao Fried chicken and papaya salad. I could just taste the freshness, spices, the flavors, it was a major flavor explosion, while enjoying my plate. My very first time trying the butterfly pea rice and wow, I loved it , cooked perfectly & so fragrant! Happy I had some leftovers which, I made a salad and added the sausage & papaya salad to it. For my future visits, I want to try the rest of the items Saap Saap has to offer, curry and the braised pork with egg & also the drinks are so colorful in the cute bucket. I look forward to more visits to this amazing food truck! Please support & follow Saap Saap HI on Instagram for the schedule, I hope they open a shop soon. The couple who runs this business are the nicest couple ever! I am going to be that person- your true loyal customer

It's hard to find good Laotian food. So when I saw this food truck had at a night market I had to try it. Kinda bummed they were sold out of the Lao fried chicken. I got the red chicken curry and Lao sausage plate with an upgrade to papaya salad. Food came out pretty quickly and portion size is pretty good. I love the papaya salad. So flavorful but it does pack heat. The spice level reminded me of my besties papaya salad. If they had papaya salad as a side order, I would have bought more to take home with me. Red curry packed the heat as well. Loved that they had mushrooms in the curry. If I ever come across them I hope they have the fried chicken .

After strolling through the Mari Garden Summer Fair, searching for something to eat, my eyes caught sight of the bright blue butterfly Jasmine rice from Saap Saap HI's food truck. "Saap Saap" is a Lao phrase that means "very delicious." And everything on the menu seemed like it would be exactly that. I ordered the combo plate with the Signature Lao Sausage and Braised Pork ($23), upgraded to get Papaya salad ($2) and got a Viet Iced Coffee ($8). The highlight of the plate was the Lao sausage. Juicy and flavorful! I would definitely order it again. The coffee was also delicious. Very strong and sweet! Overall, a great choice if you're looking for authentic Lao food on the island.

Saap Saap! Meaning Delicious/Tasty in Lao. Come by for the best Lao Sausage I've had on island. You can choose mild or hot. All food comes in plate style with the pretty blue butterfly pea rice, salad (or papaya salad $2), and crispy spring roll. We chose the Lao Sausage and Lao Fried Chicken combo for $25. Everything was seasoned perfect with explosions of flavor in every bite. They also sell buckets of various drinks that I have to try next time! Laotian food truck that goes around the island (follow on IG for schedule). We tried them at the Saturday night Pearlridge farmers market. Friendly staff! Highly recommend!

True flavors of Laos. So good in fact that I haven't had anything this aromatic and explosive in flavor except at a Laos friend's home. Outstanding Sai Oua (Lao sausage). Purchased raw (vacuum sealed package; 5/$20), grilled over charcoal on one occasion and broiled on another. Extremely juicy. Excellent balance of coarse ground pork and pork fat and starchy sticky rice. Aromatic AF! Loaded with lemongrass, galangal, lime leaves, sweet shallots amongst other things with just the right umami kick of fish sauce. Great use of fresh chilies to ratchet up the heat. Beyond anything I've had in a brick and mortar eatery. Other less traditional dishes also burst with the classic Laos flavors. The well made spring rolls once again with a good fish sauce umami kick and aromatics. The dipping sauce that comes with bursts with fresh chili flavor and heat. A creative crawfish curry with eggplant and bell peppers with a side of Gram worthy but basic butterfly pea colored rice and a side of papaya salad compliments all the Lao flavors well. The owner / chef is friendly and personable. Follow on IG for popup locations. Flavors so explosive with great authenticity, they are worth seeking out.

I saw this plate at a Bishop Museum event but already ate dinner, so i checked their schedule and found them at another event in Aiea. Totally worth it! Food and drinks are delicious! You can't go wrong.

Cheun Wea was great reviews and they have a great authentic looking selection. They're located in the Maunakea Market food court and they might be the only Thai/Lao place there. When I go to this food court, I usually am there for Maguro Bros, but I was on the hunt for Lao sausage and Maguro Bros was closed anyway. The shared space is honestly a little claustrophobic for me. And there are some interesting smells. I prefer to eat outside or take my food to go, which isn't a problem. I stood at the counter for a bit before the nice lady worker acknowledged me. She called me sister lol. I asked for a sausage and a side of sticky rice. It was $7 and came in a ziploc bag. It was the perfect light lunch. The sausage was a bit spicy, but it was really good. I also got a mango sticky rice, which was affordable and delicious. It didn't have any sauce, but that would have made it too messy. It was basically a mango sticky rice musubi. At least that's how I ate it lol. I'll definitely be back for the sausage. Maybe next time I'll try some of the other entree dishes.

I immediately bookmarked and hoped in the car to make my way to Chinatown. As a forewarning this business is located in the food court @ stall #117. Avoid walking around like a crazy person the way I did- this stall can easily get overlooked if you aren't careful. Do not expect to find the "Cheun Wea Lao Thai" signage, all we saw during our visit was "Thai Food". Food for the visit consisted of: Amok- steamed fish curry Lao Style Papaya Salad [extra spicy] Seafood Pad Thai Overall I would rate this visit 3 stars. I get that this is a fast food joint but all the promises of "authentic" Lao food really had me anticipating MORE. Dishes were held back on the spice level and the fermented fishiness that Lao food is known for so it simply didn't hit the spot for me. Maybe the traffic coming through is more Americanized and the business caters to their palate?? Either way, customer service is amazing from the owner & employees. Items are made fresh and are able to be customized to your liking. Definitely worth a try...

I heard they will keep this space for special events. The restaurant is quite busy and I'm glad we had reservations. Good thing I was there prior to lunch hour opening, otherwise we may lose our reservations since the person who made reservations tends to be habitual in arriving late. We dined in May, but it's been awhile since I first dined here. I preferred dining in Chinatown during lunch time than at dinner. Our waiter was really nice and helpful. I forgot his name, but I remembered that his eyeglasses that he wore was cool/funny, since the frames for each eye didn't match the other eye! lol. Funny it wasn't me who first noticed it. One was square frame and the other was a round frame! The restaurant doesn't do anything special for birthdays except may write Happy Birthday in chocolate on the dessert plate that you purchase for the birthday person. Their desserts are unique and refreshing. I think there are some rotating desserts /flavors like their seasonal menu for their main menu. I guess you can always keep coming back without being bored of the menu! I was bummed to see a previous dish posted of a pasta that I wanted to try that wasn't on the current spring seasonal menu! When we dined for brunch over the weekend, I was able to get the Hainan chicken with the crispy roast pork combo. It was very filling , tasty and satisfying. I do love ginger sauce on the cold ginger chicken but sometimes the chicken is just okay. This Hainan chicken was really good and the chicken was really moist! I thought it was the best I've tried! It was good that I wanted to takeout one last time in August before they moved! No more the 50/50 combo with the crispy roast pork on the lunch menu during the weekday. It was on the spring menu. Of course it's best to eat it in the restaurant than for take out. Bathroom is a must for me when dining out and they had only one shared bathroom for everyone! There was a guy who tried to make several attempts but wasn't successful, since there was always someone in the restroom. I'm glad the waiter told me there was a bigger separate bathroom with several stalls for men and ladies upstairs. You go straight through the kitchen to catch the elevator and to another kitchen /storage area! Thank Goodness! Best wishes at your new location. You offer yummy and tasty food!

The food is a fusion of Peruvian and Laotian by husband-wife team, Juan Ching and Kim Thepsenavong. There is a long history of Japanese cuisine fusing with Peruvian - it's called Nikkei. But other Asian cuisines, especially Southeast Asian, also blend seamlessly with Peruvian staples. Think about the heavy use of pepper and spice in Laotian cuisine. You've been in restaurants where the heat scale is hot, Thai hot, and Laotian hot. Peppers were only introduced into Southeast Asia in the 16th century. Peru is one of the recognized birthplaces of peppers, with over 300 varieties and a 7,500 year history of cultivation. Peruvian Laotian fusion works when you do it right. I had a beef anticuchos skewers plate with Laotian accompaniments. The anticuchos had a nice smokey sweet dark color from aji panca paste. The rice was Laotian, with black and white grains of sticky rice. There was pickled Laotian som pak, a vinegar marinated mustard cabbage. A fine blended salsa-like jeow mak len, full of charred tomato smokiness, savory paedek fish sauce, garlic, shallot, bird's eye chiles, and lime, was terrific on top of the marinated beef. I hope I run into Khao and Papas again one day so I can try their grilled chicken. Until then, I have the memory of a fine take-out plate of Peruvian Laotian fusion comfort food.

I was a little nervous because it's been years since we have eaten here and it appeared to look like a lot of tourists eating here. I'm Thai and I was wondering if I was going to be disappointed. I remember the food being OK so I kept an open mind. I decided to order something I normally would not which is the clay pot crab with glass noodles. it was OK. The crab didn't have a huge prominent taste and glass noodles are just meh to me. We also ordered the crab fried rice which was exceptional. I would definitely order that again. There was so much flavor in the rice. I also ordered a yum salad with tofu. That was also good. I loved the chili lime dressing and the added cilantro made it taste even more fresh. The lettuce leaves were huge though. I'm not sure why they were the size of a hamburger patty. It made for eating the salad challenging and messy. My kid had the salmon curry. She loved it. She doesn't handle spice so she asked for a level 2. Level two was spicy for her but she was able to eat it. Being Thai I did not feel it was spicy at all. But it did have a little bit of heat. The Mr ordered the crispy garlic chicken. It was a huge plate of it. He said it was good. He also ordered beef masuman. I will say that the portion seemed tiny. He said it was also good. I actually was pleasantly surprised this time around as I remember coming years ago and it was just OK. About the music. I did read lots of comments about their music Choice. It's not classical but jazz. To my astonishment it was extremely loud. The music Choice was not the issue but the loudness of it. I'm not sure if they tried to make it loud to sound like live music or not. We couldn't even talk to each other because we would've ended up shouting. That's really our only complaint.
