Ordered a carry out and had the combination plate with a stuffed cabbage, smoked kielbasa, 2 meatballs, mashed potatoes, 2 pierogies, and green beans. Plenty of food for my wife and I. I read about this place when I got to the Detroit area. I wanted Polish food. You do that in Detroit. But Hamtramck was a drive. Sabina's was closer. I was disappointed to get to their restaurant only to find out they were carry out only right now. However, thanks to Yelp, I was able to see the menu and call in an order. Very knowledgeable staff. I ordered the Combination Platter, which came with kielbasa, stuffed cabbage, two pirogies, meatballs, kraut and corn. I decided to also add an order of potato pancakes. When I picked up the bag with my order, I realized I had made a mistake. It weighed more that I had expected. When I got back to my hotel and opened everything up, I realized my mistake. You see, I had read "combination" to be "sampler". That was the mistake. Sabrina's combination plate is basically full size portions of everything. And it was sooooo good. Since my favorite Polish restaurant closed in Dearborn, I was excited to hear that a highly-recommended alternative was within short driving distance of my home/work. I high tailed it over there with some coworkers, already salivating at the prospect of choosing pierogis, sauerkraut, potato pancakes, kielbasa, or any mixture of the above. Upon arrival, there were no parking spots. There were no parking spots on the street nearby, either. I had to park roughly four blocks away, in a residential neighborhood, and I received dirty looks from a homeowner sitting on her front porch. Bad start to the experience. The server was nice, we were seated promptly, and the specials on the board were enticing. I ordered a special - three potato pierogis, kielbasa, and soup. All that food for only $6-7? I was already impressed. I asked if I could get sauerkraut or cheese pierogis instead of potato, but I was told they can't substitute in the lunch special. No big deal. For soup, I went against the server's recommendation (mushroom) and ordered the dill pickle soup, because when I make the hike up to Hamtramck, it's one of the highlights of my meal. I quickly found out why it wasn't the server's recommendation - it was terrible. Instead of creamy and rich, it was a thin dill-flavored broth with very little heartiness or sustenance. I ate a few bites, tried adding crackers to bolster this atrocity, and then gave up. The pierogis lacked the pizzazz I'm used to - the slight sweet and savory of the filling, the rich buttery flavor of the outside, the hint of crunch that goes so well with a bit of sour cream... these were all absent. The pierogi was bland, it was mushy like a dumpling, and the filling had little flavor. This was a huge disappointment. The kielbasa was the saving grace of the meal! I had a choice of smoked or natural, and based on a Yelper's recommendation I went with the natural. It came with garlic on the side, which I used heavily, but this would have been a great sausage even on its own. The table next to me had a smoked one and I'm pretty sure I would have enjoyed that as well. Despite getting a lot of food for the price, and despite the kielbasa being good, I don't think I will return to Sabina's. The inconvenience of its parking, the cramped ambiance, and the awful soup and mediocre pierogies are just too much to overlook. Looks like I'll have to make a trip up to Hamtramck to satisfy my urges for the delights of Polish food. read more

I had to bring my dad here. He is a huge fan of Polish food and it had been awhile since we had been on a father/daughter only adventure aka a *privacy lunch*. I seem to go out solo more with my mom these days while my dad hangs out with my husband but sometimes you just need to reconnect to your dear old dad. We started off with soup. I went for the excellent rendition of dill pickle, my father stuck with chicken noodle and was happy. I thought he was a bit lame but I am a dill pickle fanatic. We both got combination plates. We both switched our potato pierogi to farmer's cheese (of course) and switched out the meatballs for kielbasa (he opted for fresh and I went with smoked). The pierogi, crunchy kapusta, and tasty golembek were absolutely amazing. The mashed potatoes were pretty darn good too. I think his fresh kielbasa was a bit better than my smoked maybe but I was still very happy indeed with my pick, neither kielbasa blew us away but they were both very nice. We were totally stuffed and happy when we left. I need to make sure I take the old man out with me more often, we had a great time as always. I am now caught up on all things sports and I found forty extra bucks in my purse he must have stuffed in there when I was in the bathroom. Yep he will always think I am a poor college kid. I have lived in Melvindale all my life and never stopped in here until this year! First of all, you can't beat the price! I've tried the Reuben sandwich, which is great. I love the dill pickle soup as its unique. However, the first time I tried it, I had such high expectations that I think it tasted bland to me and not really like a pickle. The second time around (maybe after lowering my expectations), I really liked it! And finally, omg, if they have the coconut mouse cake in, please get it!
