We found this café while looking for a quick lunch on our way from our apartment to Ballard Locks. As it turned out, it was also on my son's recommendation list, so we were happy to give it a try. The charming outdoor seating immediately caught our attention and made for a relaxing lunch spot. We ordered the Café Mezze Plate, Shakshuka, and Mushroom Toast--more food than the two of us would normally order, but since it was our first visit, we wanted to sample a variety of dishes. The Café Mezze Plate came with an assortment of mezze, including hummus, whipped feta, roasted eggplant, green tahini, marinated olives, cucumber and turmeric cauliflower pickles, along with house-made pita and pita chips. It was fun to try so many different flavors, although the portions felt a bit small for the $36 price tag. The Shakshuka was flavorful but a little spicy for my daughter, though I enjoyed it. It came with two perfectly cooked eggs and two pieces of house-made pita. At $18, it was decent, but nothing particularly memorable. We couldn't finish the Mushroom Toast, so we took it home and had it the next day. It actually reheated very well and still tasted delicious. Overall, this café has a lovely atmosphere, especially the outdoor seating, making it a great place to gather with friends. Warning: This place is very pricey for the amount of food you get. A few friends and I went there and decided to share several dishes. The basic chicken kebab came with a single skewer and nothing else. Charging $25 for a plate like that is excessive. By the time the bill arrived, it was quite high, and we were still hungry. The service was good, and the staff were very friendly. However, they need to either increase the portion sizes or adjust their prices. The value simply isn't there. I won't be visiting this restaurant again. There are many great restaurants in Ballard where you can enjoy excellent food at a much more reasonable price. read more

Sabine is a very trendy restaurant in the heart of Ballard. We decided to go for Sunday brunch around 9:30am, and with the farmers market happening we had a little trouble finding it at first. You order at the counter (during brunch/lunch hours) then seat yourself. Overall I'd say you're really paying for the ingredients and aesthetic of this place. We ordered the Oat pancake and turkish eggs, and were still pretty hungry afterwards. The oat pancake was delicious and perfectly moist, crispy, and flavorful, I would come back here just for that. The turkish eggs were good too, the whipped feta was very tangy and delicious. I almost felt like I could eat both of these dishes as 1 person. That being said, if you're a party of 2, order 3 entrees. Lol. I would definitely come back here for a special occasion, but not for a regular hearty breakfast. Since it's self service, the best part is that no one rushes you, you can stay as long as you want. Type of cuisine: "Since opening our doors in 2020, our mission has been clear: create a community gathering space centered around espresso, fresh and inspiring food, and simply delicious cocktails. our dedication to supporting local farms, foragers, and producers showcases the bounty of the northwest, while using in-season and organic ingredients gives life to our Mediterranean inspired menu." Ambiance: Loud, bustling, and completely disorganized and discombobulated. The signage - especially for first-timers - is badly situated for guidance on how to enter, order, be seated. The line is haphazard, with patrons pushing past to get to the front of the line, others rushing to find seats before ordering, taking up space that someone with food might like to sit, and just an unfriendly entry altogether. The space, in the old Bastille, is bright and large, spacious though cramped with people hustling in every which direction only thinking of themselves, without care or attention to others. The patio space is bright and nice, though, again, lacks seating for patrons waiting to order as previous patrons comfortably linger over large, relaxed mealtimes. Servers are completely out of their element, placing silverware and napkins on unoccupied tables, while patrons with food - who had requested silverware - were left to wait until more could be washed/readied from kitchen. Employees spent more time talking amongst themselves then tending to the ordering customers or those awaiting their beverages at the espresso counter. What I ordered: At our table of six, we had an order of the Oat Skillet Pancake - rolled oats, chia, ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, date butter, pistachio dukkah, maple syrup; Turkish Eggs - whipped feta, fried farm eggs*, arugula, avocado, seeds, aleppo butter, como bread; Halloumi Egg Sandwich - bacon, fried halloumi cheese, fried farm egg*, arugula, harissa aioli*, brioche bun; and the Classic Fried Egg Sandwich - fried farm egg*, fontina, za'atar tomato, arugula, caramelized onion aioli*, como bread with the addition of bacon ($4 additional) and avocado (additional $3). We also shared two sides of bacon - pure valley pork bacon, and two orders of Za'atar Potatoes - fried yukon gold potatoes, apple cider vinegar, za'atar. I also selected the Sevilla - espresso, milk, chocolate and orange (but there was no orange anywhere to be found). What I loved: The table favorites were the Halloumi Sandwich and Potatoes. Came here with my partner for our anniversary brunch on a Saturday morning and it was indeed crowded, as expected, but honestly not nearly as bad as I thought it would be! The line looked intimidating, but it moved so quickly and efficiently, and the service didn't feel rushed or compromised at all. We each had a pastry and the tahini maple matcha oat lattes (so good!!). My partner had the halloumi breakfast sandwich, and I went for the grapefruit and labneh. Both dishes were outstanding: beautifully balanced, flavorful, and just the right portion sizes. Really turned off after my recent experience. I ordered a cold brew with peppermint syrup, which is my usual order, but it tasted like it had plain sweetener instead of peppermint. I politely let the barista know that I thought there may have been a mix-up. He just stared at me without saying anything and remade the drink. When he handed it back, he sassily asked, "Taste the same as the last?" Unfortunately, it did--it still tasted like plain syrup with no peppermint flavor -- I let him know and he rudely shrugged and walked away. Mistakes happen, and I would've completely understood if the syrup was out or there had already been an error. What was most disappointing was the lack of communication and customer service. A simple acknowledgment or willingness to investigate the issue would have gone a long way. For a $7 cold brew, I expected better. Instead, I left feeling like my concern was dismissed rather than taken seriously. It honestly felt very gaslight-y. I even had my husband taste the drink afterward to make sure I wasn't imagining it, and he agreed it didn't taste like peppermint. The avocado toast is on high quality bread, topped with avocado that is complemented by a hint of lemon. You can pay a dollar extra for a sunny side egg on top, and I definitely recommend. I also tried their iced chai, which is always delightful. It's perfectly spicy and sweet, although I usually add a pump of vanilla. there is only street parking but there's a lot in this area. if you can't find some i just went up two blocks to the residential area and found some even on a sunday with a farmers market.. just had to make a round. right when you walk in at the table ahead you can grab a menu and find something delish to order and then order at the register and then find a seat. there is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. the outdoor seating makes for a bright and open dining experience which i thoroughly enjoyed. their service was surprisingly fast. our food came before our coffee but literally right after we got the coffee too! i ordered the shakshuka which was good and it came with delicious wheat pita they baked themselves (i believe). the egg was cooked perfectly, nice and jammy and the shakshuka itself was tomato heavy and spicy just how it should be! my friend ordered the BLT and it came on nice sourdough and thick slices of quality bacon. it was not the cutest thing to eat but it was delicious! i enjoyed their array of mediterranean middle eastern dishes and every ingredient was high quality and fresh. i would definitely come here again to try all the things!! read more

I went here for brunch with a party of 5 and checked in advance to see if they took reservations(they don't). You order at the counter and are NOT allowed to grab a table before you order. On a Saturday morning, this place unfortunately did not have enough seating for our party, so I stood for most of the meal and my friends took a booth. This was a bummer and probably is not acceptable for those with accessibility needs, but did not bother me too much. What DID bother me was the pancake I ordered... I have revisited this picture many times trying to understand how this pancake came into existence. Has the person making this had a pancake before? I feel like this is a pancake created by someone who had heard about pancakes via word of mouth, but maybe has never seen or tasted a pancake before. I also have contemplated if I am somehow the problem - Maybe I have a crucial misunderstanding of what a pancake should be? Either way, the Oat Skillet Pancake is $20 and runs a bit more of an adjacent look and flavor profile to a veggie burger. It will sustain you in a prehistoric way, as in you are just fed, but doesn't have much else to offer besides the occasional essence of an oat or the caress of a crushed pistachio. It's definitely got an ancient vibe to it, if you're a history buff who is into that kind of thing. Sabine is a hidden gem! We went for my coworkers bday and the restaurant itself is so pretty! Plants, a cute bar area and the painting of white and beach blue looked like you were in a beach cafe! We were a group of 7. You can make soft reservations' over the phone or email but if you have a big party, especially more than I would say 4-6, it's important to book ahead of time. Any big parties will be placed to the back of the restaurant where it's more for private events and special occasions. When you arrive, the cafe is to the left and their kitchen is straight across. There is a sign that says you must order and then after your order, you are given a number. As a group of 7, we were taken to the back where private events and parties are. It was super cute! There was another bar and a beautiful chandelier. There was actually a group of 16 ppl that had reserved the space but we were told we can have our own table and 'share' the space. You scan the QR code to order and they bring it to you. This was a good technique bc you don't have to pay at very end and just head out! But with big parties and multiple people, it can get confusing for the staff. Some of us ordered the same stuff and there was a lag in receiving our said orders. Drinks =9/10 Food = 10/10 (get the za'atar potatoes as a side with aioli -- these were spectacular!) Service = 7/10 (staff was very nice -- if there was a mix up or hiccup with the order, there was no problem in making it correct!) I definitely love this place! Food was amazing though I was a bit taken aback by the morels (maybe they weren't washed or washed but was left sitting out for too long? it smells/taste a bit too fermented for my liking). I don't think I'll get the morel mushroom hummus the next time I have dinner here. The kebabs were delicious and I love how they pair the sauces to each meat type. Meal is pricier than expected, so be ready to spend at least $100 here (food+appetizer+drinks). read more
