Street parking is your only option so that's worth noting if you're planing on coming in during a busy time of day/week. Our sever was very friendly and helpful. The drink I ordered was off the menu but she managed to make it work. When I was having trouble deciding which menu item to order she made a good recommendation to modify one so I could have exactly what I wanted. Food came out quickly and tasted great! My friend and I came here for brunch while in the area, and we had a great time over yummy food. I don't brunch often, but HI Spot Cafe made me question why I don't brunch often. The food was delicious in a craftsman home, with a lively setting and friendly staff. We came here on a late morning on Sunday, which was of course, peak hour for brunch. For the two of us, we waited for half an hour. But not to fret, at the entrance is a full coffee bar where you can order a drink and sip on caffeine while you wait. I ordered the biscuits and gravy, which was fantastic. I'm always on the gravy train, but this gravy had a kick to it with the spices, which I really liked. It was way better than your average, country gravy. The biscuits were soft and buttery and the poached eggs made a sauce after breaking the yolk. Perfection! Unlimited drip coffee for the win. I'm aware that Hi Spot is located in Seattle, so everything is a bit more expensive, but most of the entrees didn't seem like it came with $20 worth of food (almost every entree was $18.50 - $21). Really good food! Everything we had was delicious and I was very impressed. Their patio is dog friendly (I called to confirm and there were 3 other dogs on the patio while we were there). The service was great even though they seemed a little short staffed and everything came out quickly. The ambiance was nice because the patio was covered and heated but we had enough space between us and other tables and dogs. Kind of disappointed with the service: after walking in, the server didn't bother to ask us if we would like to sit outdoors or indoors. It's a sunny day in Seattle (which is rare), so we had to request and insist to ask for a table at their patio. The tofu scramble wasn't what I expected, I make tofu scramble every morning so expected it to be more like a scramble similar to Cafe Flora with nutritional yeast and tumeric to make it more eggy/egg-like. Honestly, I would have preferred the midday menu and coming for a 2 pm late lunch, I'm kind of surprised that only the breakfast menu was offered so despite that the eggs and salad was okay, it wasn't amazing. And I would have chosen a better meal off their midday menu. They also forgot my Bloody Maria and seems like they expect us to order right away once we were seated? After asking whether we can have a few more minutes to take a look at the menu, they took probably 15 minutes to come back to take our order (longer than we expected since we were hungry). We were looking for a brunch spot to take friends and stumbled upon Hi Spot. We put our name in and waited about 20min but it was prime brunch time on a weekend so it was expected. The food was delicious with tons of great options. Everyone had a hard time selecting because they wanted to try so many things. I had the breakfast burrito and it was delicious and huge. The coffee was great and they kept refilling which I love. There is indoor seating and a patio but the patio has a roof and heaters so it's really an all season space. The staff were phenomenal. They were friendly and accommodating and their service stood out. Came here on a Sunday at 11:30 to brunch with four people. It was lightly raining, so we opted to wait for an inside table (despite the nice covered porch with heaters, the light rain coming in sideways meant apparently the food still got wet). It did take a while to seat us, but it was pretty busy. The main dining area is on the "second" (kind of a half) floor so if you're not great with (a small number of) stairs, I wouldn't recommend this one. The time between ordering and getting the food felt a little long. Not sure if it was actually, or just because we were hungry? But the service was definitely a little slow. And someone at our table drained his water glass and didn't get a refill until the staff with the water pitcher passed us several times. We shared The Round-Up and Sammy Sue. The food was delicious! I really enjoyed the creaminess of the scrambled eggs + goat cheese; the fruit cups were great. The Sammy Sue had such a great soft sourdough, although a little messy because the fried egg was already cut. Potatoes were good too. They forgot my bread as part of the The Round-Up, and were quick to pop in new ones when I asked... and the new ones never showed up either. I noticed a pile of untaken bread in their oven, cooling and sitting there, for the entirety of our meal. No one really checked up on us until we were done with our food, so I didn't ask a third time, and by the time we were checked in on, I no longer wanted the bread (just the check and to pay). So... the service was a little scattered for sure. But the food I did get was great! I don't think this would be my first choice based on the experience, but I'd be happy to go again if someone else chose it! read more

Yesterday was my first visit to the Hi Spot Cafe. There were 6 in our party for brunch to celebrate a birthday. We arrived about noon on a Saturday and the place was busy. Since they don't accept reservations, we had called ahead and put our name on a waitlist. After we all arrived, we waited about 20 - 25 minutes for a table to become available. This restaurant is an old house in the Madrona district of Seattle, so it doesn't have a lot of niceties that newer restaurants with more than 1 level might, like an elevator. So, don't go if you can't walk up old wooden stairs. The bathroom is located on the 3rd floor, so be forewarned. The ambience was friendly and energetic. All the workers were hustling to get orders taken and in. Service by our waitress was excellent. She knew what she was doing and did everything very well. Food arrived quickly and coffee/drinks came almost as soon as we ordered them. The menu is kind of typical with a few interesting tweaks on familiar brunch fare. Their eggs Benedict are served with a curry sauce instead of Hollandaise. My avocado toast was served on 2 slices of Ezekiel bread, 1 egg to order on each slice, lots of fresh avocado, tomato and a pesto sauce on the side. Yummy! Everyone said their food was very good. Overall, it was a pleasant experience in the restaurant though it was very loud. In order to have a conversation, we had to shout to be heard. Not my favorite way to dine. And the parking wasn't that good, either. I parked 2 blocks away on a residential street--not a big deal since the weather was nice. But if it had been rainy, I wouldn't have been too happy. I would recommend this restaurant to those seeking a homey feel with a good vibe and lots of noise and people. If you want something intimate and quiet, you need to go somewhere else. read more

I've been here several times over the years, so I figured it's a good time for a review. The food is really good (we've only had breakfast items)--shout out to their delicious pico--but a couple things keep it from being worth 5 stars for me: 1. The place is *really* dirty. While I acknowledge that they have an "Excellent" food safety rating, I find that I enjoy my food a bit more if I don't stare too much at any particular spot inside. The ceiling fans and light fixtures are caked in years of thick dust and grease, and the walls and trim are generously caked with brown splatter. Cobwebs adorn the walls near the ceiling. Today, the baked goods display case had a good amount of fruit flies all over the bread. This morning I was sitting at the small table near the window waiting to be seated, and I accidentally got a good look under the espresso machine, which wasn't very appetizing. And speaking of of the espresso machine... 2. Their coffee service is incredibly inefficient. If you go on a busy day and order a coffee drink after being seated, do not expect to get your drink before getting your food. This was the second time we got our coffee at the same time as the check (30 min after ordering coffee and food), and we had to take it to go. I also witnessed a larger family with a young boy that had ordered a hot chocolate with his breakfast. The drink never came during the breakfast service, and when he went to ask the barista for his hot chocolate, she asked him to wait in the 7+ person line. This chorizo scramble really saved me from what could have been a bad hangover. They really don't skimp on the chorizo which I heavily appreciated, and you can use the tortillas to make tacos if you wanted! The green sauce was also the perfect addition. Food is bland - the least they could do is salt it. The hot toddy should, at the least, have a good ratio of lemon & honey. My hot toddy ended up being hot lemon water with a shot of whiskey. The service was unacceptably hostile. Lexy is a waitress that can't be bothered to be passive aggressive - she is just openly, aggressively, hostile. She should not be in the hospitality business because she is missing basic conversational manners. As if that were not enough, she has zero waitressing skills. She forgot to bring out food out when it was prepped resulting in the food coming out to the table cold. She couldn't balance the bowl of soup when she brought it out, resulting in the contents spilling into the plate. So your soup will come to you, half spilled into the plate at the bottom, making you feel like you're eating pig slop and making the bottom of the bread soggy. She got the order wrong too - giving us fries as sides with both breakfast items instead of fruit with one and fries with one. When we reminded her about the side of fruit, she rolled her eyes & said "wow". When I asked her for 1 more box to pack up leftovers, she asked "what are you trying to pack up?". When I itemized the 3 items in 3 boxes, once again there was a frustrated "wow, really". I do not understand how she got this job, but she deserves to be fired. The ambiance is sub par - feels crowded but not cozy, the place feels really dated and lacks all warmth/charm that you would expect from a pricey cafe. Cheaper "hole in the wall" places in U District/other parts of Seattle are friendlier than this. read more

Every table was full with about a 10 minute wait to be seated on Sunday 12n - which I took as a good sign. Place was a bit dirty; typical greasy spoon type diner food, served in a multi-story house converted into a restaurant. Food was fairly good with large portions, but nothing stand out. Service was kind of absent. Someone took our order; and dropped off our food but left before I could ask for hot sauce or more coffee. After we finished eating we had to flag someone else down to get the check. Not in a rush to go back anytime soon. read more

I think this place was decent but slightly pricy for what it was. There's nothing interesting on the menu, most of it are a variety of a scramble. What we got was good but not great. You wouldn't take visitors here or anything. One cool thing was the interior of the restaurant, I think it's just someone's old house they turned into a restaurant. A sweet little cafe that's right at home in its suburban neighborhood. The size of the place is actually surprising - between an outdoor patio and an upstairs area, it seems like it could hold a larger number of people than were there casually dining alongside us for breakfast. I'd heard this place is well known for their breakfast burrito, so we got it. I'm not going to diss what was a fine burrito, but it definitely lacked the flair of its SoCal counterpart. They just don't make Mexican food elsewhere like they do here. I got the oatmeal and it was fine, with lots of little goodies on the side to add in for a delicious crunch or an added bit of sweetness. Good coffee. Better hot chocolate. If you do choose to eat, the staff is super friendly. There may be a wait in the mornings, but it's well worth it. They have various menu items, and all of them sound so good. I got the chorizo scramble. The eggs were so flavorful while being mixed with potato, chorizo, and cheese. Every bite was perfect. My friends got some other plates, which they very much enjoyed. This is my favorite place in the whole world. I've been going here since I was little and I come back every time I'm home from school. The inside is beyond adorable and the service is lovely! We have been going to the Hi Spot Cafe for close to 10 years and have always had a good meal and experience. However this time that changed. We were enjoying breakfast and finishing up when who I assumed was the manager or the owner came up and asked how things were going and then proceeded to tell us to wrap it up and leave so they could free up the table. I have never had any restaurant come up and ask us to leave before so to say we were a little blow away is an understatement. Further more our food came out cold and when we let them know that after being asked to leave the gentleman came back with some smart ass comment. Enjoyed breakfast inside and had a more sustainable visit than we did during the pandemic. I had the Zorba with fruit and loved it. He had the El Pacifico with home fries, which he enjoyed yet thought the omelet was too salty from all of the capers... he only ate half (I tried it and agreed - you can actually see all the capers cooked into the egg in the photo. There were more inside). The home fries were delicious. We shared a pastry, which was delicious, with a poor of tea. I also had a Chai Latte, which was good yet not that hot. What a perfect spot for breakfast! The place has a front coffee counter area as well as a sit-down back area. We easily got a table for two around 11AM on a Monday. Because I absolutely love hash browns, I ordered the hash it out. It was an order of hash browns with two eggs. I also ordered a biscuit to substitute with the side of toast. It was such a delicious order! The hash browns were fresh with peppers, onions, and some meat, maybe sausage. And the eggs were cooked perfectly, mixing well with the hash browns. The biscuit was probably my favorite though. It was so fresh and warm, and the texture was super soft and not crumbly.
