I came here on Valentine's Day because my friend said he could get me in on his membership for the day. I've gone climbing only once before, but never at this facility. When I first walked in, I immediately noticed all of the natural light coming into the room. It really added to the outdoorsy ambiance. The employee at the front desk was super friendly and was quick to get me set up. As for equipment, grabbing shoes was easy (pulled them out of the storage cubes to the left of the front desk), and they provided a harness as well. I'm not sure if the staff normally does the walkthrough on tying a proper knot, since my friend and his friend did it for me. Nonetheless, I do like that they have that area separate from the main climbing area. Helps to take the pressure off a little bit if you're new. There seemed to be dozens of different climbing paths to choose from, with signs at the bottom indicating the level of difficulty. I found that particularly helpful since, as a newbie, everything looked hard. Also, the people I observed and interacted with on the floor were extremely friendly. Really great vibes coming from the community here. The pricing, based on information from my friend, seemed reasonable, since it included the gym and classes. However, I live in Elk Grove, so I probably will stick to visiting this place only now and then. Recommend giving it a try, though! read more

One of the these largest and toughest climbing gyms I've been to so far across the nation but also just an overall great spot One huge note though is that the area is completely surrounded with unhoused individuals, which is honestly a bit saddening at the state of the world. I'm rather desensitized to it but it can be a bit off putting for someone who don't regularly come here. I encourage to still keep an open mind as they don't broach the premises and stay outside the fence but it can still be worthwhile to bring all your valuables with you or hidden On the merits of the gym and space though it's a wonderfully fun space, has a plethora of gym equipment, a short walk to their own brewery/eatery, numerous top rope sections, open bouldering sections, and a professional level weight lifting section that spans nearly half a football field I would suggest coming to this gym if you want a day trip activity from the Bay or surrounding regions as they have some fun climbs, a nice lounging area to work if desired, a shop to purchase climbing gear/apparel, and friendly staff. It has easily the hardest climbs I've tried in the main sense of technique but also grading is low comparative to other Touchstone gyms I've been to. This could also be to the dismay of beginners so there's definitely a trade off One thing that can be notable is that their gym equipment is a bit outdated and one particular piece of equipment that I would have hoped to see was a dual cable machine with smaller weight increments but nothing that cannot be adjusted with other exercises, just a shame for someone who works on shoulder rehab. Fun climbing gym in Sacramento! This was my first time bouldering in a long time so I was excited to check out Pipeworks. We visited on a Thursday morning and it was not too crowded. Lots of parking available. Adult day pass costs $30 and shoe rentals cost $4. The climbs were challenging! Went with a more experienced climber and even they said the v1 routes were closer to a v3. That said, we had a great time. The staff clean the walls often and the gym has a lot of other facilities, including top-rope climbing walls and a weightlifting room. Would come back! read more

I would rate this a 0 stars if i could. The lady at the front was very rude to my friends and I. It was our first time ever rock climbing and coming to this place so we were a little confused on some areas. When we walked in she was nice but our waiver was filled out incorrectly, which was on us for not reading properly but her tone was nasty. She gave us attitude at first but we let it slip since we were wrong. However when we went back with our CORRECT waiver. She started being super rude to my friend who was stuttering a bit. The reason why he was stuttering was because as we gave her our name she kept giving us like looks like we were speaking another language or something. The final straw was when she loudly and rudely cut off my friend just to say " SORRY? I cant understand you." First of all I don't understand why staff cant be patient with new comers. Second my friend was speaking perfectly fine with some minor stuttering, if she cant even handle that the she shouldn't be working. Third, we are minors just trying to have fun so I don't understand why she was acting like the child. Also to clarify one more time, we are new to this so we don't understand some rock climbing terms, when we were asked about the payment and equipment we thought we could buy the whole bundle. As I was about to tell her we wanted the bundle she mentioned something we didn't understand so we asked her what that meant. Instead of explaining she repeated the word again but loudly, like that explains what it is. Instead of being a patient kind person she pushed her tasks to the sweet man who was KIND ENOUGH to explain everything to us, he was patient and understanding when I said sorry that we were confused. The rock climbing experience is fun, but the service was horrible coming from that lady with a bob cut at the front. Never coming here again and would not recommend to anyone tbh. I hope this reaches the boss or workers and I hope you guys become more patient with new customers. read more

As part of the Touchstone gyms, I love this place when I come to Sac! For bouldering there are multiple walls, but only 1 section tops out. There is no full overhang but there are plenty of inclined routes. The walls go pretty high (at least in my opinion) but definitely doable! In comparison to Dogpatch, I would say Pipeworks routes are a big tougher. read more

As a beginner climber, I really enjoy my visits to this location. I only ever boulder, so I can't speak to the top roping. But they have a huge facility and many routes to choose from. The signs are usually quite clear and the environment is friendly. I've only ever gone to bouldering gyms in australia, but what is different in this gym is the lack of air conditioning. They have lots of industrial size fans but when it's a hot day (there's many of those in sacramento as we know) then it can get very stuffy. Just something to be aware of. Also none of the American climbing gyms offer a free first try, which I find strange. Why would I ever spend $25+ for a single visit if I'm not sure I'll like it? I wish they'd do a free trial. Otherwise this is a great place to climb in addition to being super accessible if you live near highway 80. It's right off the freeway. read more

Great experience for a youth private lesson with Carly! We were in town for our son's basketball camp and decided to set our daughter up for a last minute private rock climbing session. First of all - Pipeworks is unique in offering such a thing for a 9 year old with no prior experience with just 2 days notice. There are different prices depending on member/not and age. I don't have much experience with comparative prices but our daughter left SO happy it was well worth it. Secondly, the gym itself is astonishing. The size and scale has something for everyone. This was cool because our daughter was able to start off on a moderate sized wall and ended up on one of the tallest walls they have. Lastly, the staff, ESPECIALLY CARLY!!, were professional and kind. I've read reviews of nonchalant attitudes at other gyms and we did NOT experience that at all. I can't speak for what it's like to be a member there but for our impromptu session it was fantastic. read more

This place is super fun!!! My only complaint is take the class or pre-learn your 8 knot and belaying because you will waste time trying to practice and learn it. You will get tested on it before you can start climbing. And you'll get asked the safety features. Those videos are not as helpful as if there is a live person showing it to you. Other than that, this was a great place to exercise and do something different and exciting. Your arms do get really sore the next couple of days. read more

Came out here to top rope and boulder, and had a great time! It's located on the outskirts of downtown Sacramento. There's a gated parking lot with plenty of parking spots. First timers need to sign a waiver upon entrance; it's super quick on an iPad. For a day pass, it's $30 on a weekend without the rentals. Don't forget to take a belay test before top roping. Half the gym is for top roping and lead climbing, and the other half is dedicated to bouldering. In the middle is a stretch mat, slack line, and a couple of other equipment. I almost forgot, but in the back is a full fitness area (largest I've seen in any climbing gym), and I saw a studio upstairs for fitness classes. You'll find a women and men bathroom with plenty of stalls, lockers, and I didn't confirm this myself, but I was told there's a sauna room. If I didn't live in Davis, I'd probably frequent this place more. I hope to check out some other Touchstone locations in the future! read more

I really like working out at Sacramento Pipeworks, and I'm not even a climber! This gym is HUGE, with a ton of weight machines, cardio machines, and free weights (including crossfit/powerlifting style weights and plates). Their selection of equipment is amazing, including hard-to-find equipment like GHDs, "ski" rowers, and assault bikes. The gym is pretty lightly attended during the day on weekdays, so you will likely have the "crossfit" section to yourself (or maybe only have to share it with one other person). People are great about wearing masks too, as well as maintaining social distancing when possible. Many of the "odds and ends" here are great too. They have nice bathroom facilities including lockers and showers. Their bike parking area is indoors, meaning it's much safer than parking your bike outside (still lock it up though!). They have a great beverage and snack selection, including their own beer that they brew (try the "Quickdraw" pale ale!). If you are visiting from out of town, it's easy to get a day pass. read more

As far as Touchstone Gyms go, Pipeworks isn't terrible. The front desk staff is friendly! And mostly they say hi to you and don't act like they are better than you (unlike Dogpatch or Mission Cliffs). I miss climbing here a bit since I sometimes want to rope up, but Touchstone has racist policies, and their COVID-reopening has been elitist and catered towards people who could afford to keep their memberships in a pandemic where many people are financially struggling. Not to mention, most gyms paused people's memberships and gave them the option to keep paying. Touchstone gave folks the option to pause payment. They've got some interesting roped terrain, but I haven't rope climbed too much here. Their bouldering is... okay. It's set by a bunch of bros and it climbs that way. Many of the harder problems involve big, thuggy moves, a dyno to the top, or compy climbing, and I'm not about that life. Grading feels kind of all over the board here. If you're looking for more technical climbs, head to the Boulder Field. read more

Compared to gyms in the area it gets a 3 due to the facilities. Staff is good, they have a brewery (food is definitely overpriced), and they have lots of great work out classes. Great work out facilities as well. But...most Touchstone gyms meet this mark. This place falls flat in their overall setting and climbing equipment. They have a spray wall that's decent, but no system boards (Moonboatd, Keller, etc.) like most of the other TC gyms have. Their route setting is much better than the bouldering sets. Routes are usually good and the roof is super cool. The bouldering sets...well...they're just kinda bland and boring. Not a lot of variety and the grades aren't really stable. Definitely harder than other TC gyms, but you don't lose points for that. You lose points for uninspired setting that just leave a lot to be desired. If I boulder in the bay or at Boulder Field, I know I'm going to enjoy my work out. A Pipeworks Boulder session is often a chore rather than something I get enjoyment out of. Overall, it's your best option if you like ropes. If you're into bouldering, go to Boulder Field. read more

I have never been to a nicer rock climbing gym. This gym has a slackline, top rope, bouldering, a sauna, a workout area and more. The price is a little hefty, but you pay for what you get. I would most definitely recommend. I come here at least 3 times a week and never get bored or run out of things to do. Not only is the staff friendly and helpful but the community of people are just as amazing. I couldn't take enough pictures to cover the plethora of things to do at this gym, you'll need to just walk in and see for yourself. The guest pass access is also very friendly compared to others. They offer one free pass the first Friday of the month, one regular guest pass for anytime and discounted guest pass for another other times above your other two passes. Love it here read more

Overall good gym! Sacramento pipeworks is big and has many routes! The staff was very friendly! The route setting is nice, there is a mixture of old school and new school which I enjoyed. They had a lot of different walls so one could experience underhands, slabs, and verticals. They also have a good collection of merchandise, more than any single gym I've been to. I really enjoyed this problem I was working on the whole time I was there. Overall, it was a good experience! I am deducting 2 stars for 2 reasons. 1. The building is very old and dirty. It didn't feel or look clean inside the building and the outside is covered in rust. I went on a rainy day and there were puddles all over the place, with the bathroom being covered in water. 2. I met a lady there who was very rude and had a negative attitude towards the new dynamic style of climbing. (She wasn't directing her thoughts towards me btw) This was the first person I interacted with in the gym, I asked her if the route in front of me was a Dyno, she proceeded to say "Yes, I hate those routes, Dyno's are for teenage boys". I like to think of this sport as a welcoming community with no gate keeping. I don't think any style of climbing should be put down and this was the first time I had an interaction like this. Our company organized a team building activity here. It was a blast! Our group included people of all ages and experience levels. Everyone enjoyed their time, they were friendly, prepared for our arrival, and had a good intro class. The price was reasonable for a day pass. There were plenty of regular climbs as well as a bouldering wall. They also have a number of other exercise machines available that would be great for variety if you had a monthly pass. Fun place, had a blast for a first timer. The clerk that assisted us was very nice and helpful. I like the variety of climbs and color organized climbing blocks and shapes. It's a fantastic workout, getting the shoes there as a whole, I thought a great package deal. The only negative would be just filthy hands, by the end of it, wash your hands, my hands were filthy and under my nails too. Bathrooms are clean and they have lockers too. read more

Favorite gym of all time. The atmosphere and people are so nice, staff and gym goers alike. The yoga classes are great, especially classes with an instructor named Mel (I believe). Classes are sweat inducing, heart pounding intense, and yet have spiritual moments and typically end on a relaxing note. The equipment area is small, but people come here for a wide variety of workouts so it balances out. There are occasionally sales for rock climbing shoes and gear. At times, there is a coffee shop vendor that shows up, around 10 am ish. The are only two downsides. 1. It is hot hot hot here in the summer. High ceilings make it harder to cool off, early mornings or late evenings are the only times to come in summer. 2. There is a homeless encampment nearby and a bar across the parking lot. I once saw a man leave the bar and hit a dog that was walking around the encampment. He didn't even stop to check the dog, heartbreaking (it was a year ago, but I still think about it every time I drive in) :( read more

So. Much. Fun. A friend and I tried bouldering a few days ago (still mildly sore). I hadn't been to this gym in probably about 15 years (probably why I'm still sore). Quick check in. Friendly staff. Dogs everywhere. Very friendly and cool members. What's not to like? Some might say the price tag? It was $20 to climb + $4 for rental equipment. So for two of us it was $48 and we were spent before an hour was up HOWEVER had we stayed longer it would have been a better value, of course. Not to mention it's a day pass so you can drop into the classes they offer as well! A section of the course was being worked on and wasn't available while we were there, that was a bummer but there was still plenty to climb on. It wouldn't hurt for you to give them a buzz to find out if any construction is going on if you are planning to drop in. I'd been jonesin' to try bouldering for quite some time now and I'm so glad I did! Next up: Some conditioning, to make my next trip worthwhile. Wish I lived closer! Pipeworks is my home gym and I recommend it to everyone! It's about time I finally write a review. My first visit here was a couple years ago with my cousin, who is has a Touchstone membership. One of the many perks of a membership here is that you can bring one guest per month any day for free and a guest on the fourth Friday of each month. That's two guest passes a month! After a few visits, I decided to get a membership too, and have since loved utilizing all of the perks (see their website for more membership details). Most of my visits here are spent in the bouldering section - lots of space to climb with varying difficulty levels throughout. Despite the fact that I still consider myself a beginner, climbers of all experience can feel welcome here. Those who are newer can easily get tips and advice from others and the more advanced climbers are always finding new routes and sharing techniques with one another. On more crowded days/times, people are always mindful of sharing the walls. The staff here are really cheery and welcoming. They're always greeting people with smiles and waves, which is greatly appreciated. They do a great job of maintaining the facility and providing a positive experience. And while the exterior of the building may not look like anything special, the interior is HUGE and offers space for all kinds of activities, from climbing to cardio and weights, to yoga and CrossFit and more. Plus, all of the facilities are kept really clean, which is a definite plus anywhere you go, but especially in a gym where people are sweaty and working out. All in all, Pipeworks is a super well-rounded place for a workout, and an even better place if you're looking for a community of kind and fitness-oriented people. Definitely check for some of the events that Pipeworks hosts, such as gear exchanges and competitions. And when you're taking a break from whatever workout you're doing, there are plenty of good doggos and puppers around (because they allow dogs!) for you to pet and adore. I've been to a at least five Touchstone gyms and am very impressed with Sacramento Pipeworks. First, it's huge, with top-rope / lead climbing, a respectable bouldering area, stretching area, ample lifting, and cardio areas, and even a full Crossfit gym. There is even jiu-jitsu! Yoga here is good as well. Gyms such as Mission Cliffs may have more top rope climbing walls but as a total gym I feel Sacramento Pipeworks truly has it all. The one downside is the immense homeless population literally a street over, who have even burned part of the gym! I really hope the gym or city can work to relieve that burden on this fantastic gym that improves the wellness of the city. read more

If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. My family and I came in (2 adults, 2 kids) and immediately the front desk employee (update 1 his name is Daniel) was eyeing us and rude. I called ahead about prices and how kid-friendly the place is as well as completed the waivers online earlier in the day. As Daniel was searching up my name in the records and then I rented two pairs of shoes and a harness, he gave tons of attitude like he did not want us here when we advised only part of our party was climbing today. Additionally, Daniel did not advise us prior that you had to know how to tie a double eight knot so he refunded that for us. We were obviously newcomers and he let us know that we could refund the passes if we were not satisfied, blinked twice and gave the fakest smile that told us he wanted us gone. I did a handful of research and learned/practiced the knot and came back for training and another employee (Dominic) helped me, then forgot about me when he said I had to complete the test. I noticed the two employees eyeing my niece and I at the station while we were waiting but didn't think too much of it, including Daniel pointing at us. After waiting and wasting approximately 20 mins, my niece and I came back to the desk to ask for a refund once again for the harness. I did not raise my voice nor complain but had asked why they had left us. Daniel (pictured) let me know that it "is terrible service that he [the other employee, Dominic] left is waiting and no one should ever wait like that. How frustrating. I can see your frustrations. I would not let that guy go by" in the most condescending voice I could think of. Then Daniel gave me my refund and gave me a couple of free day passes to make up for it which I will not be using because this was the most terrible experience I have ever had at a climbing gym. Please either hire some better staff or ensure that your staff understands that if they're having a rough day that they should probably not take it out on customers. This was a terrible experience for my family and now this is how they view indoor rock climbing. Daniel probably needs some retraining on how to speak to customers who are not already his friends. Great community for those that are already members but atrocious and unwelcoming for those that are newcomers. read more

If you can walk in for the first time, look at the 4- story climbing towers in the middle of the place and NOT pee your pants, you're halfway there. Everyone seemed to be doing their own thing and there was plenty of space. Luckily I was there with a friend who was kind enough to belay me on one of the training walls. I was a little concerned that after signing the waiver and rending shoes it was like, "ok, off you go. Have fun!" but I guess that's fine. At first glance driving by, I thought it looked pretty sketchy - it was a fenced off huge grounds with a bunch of warehouses and a large parking area, and some sections of the fence had barbed wire. But looks can be deceiving because this place has it all inside. It is more than a rock climbing area - it has a cardio area, weights, yoga, martial arts, body weight training, and even an area to workout with tires! This facility is huge and they're in the process of building a brewery in one of their warehouses, so that'll be cool to check out once it's done. All the rock climbing walls have rocks labeled by difficulty if you want to try and complete a certain color, or you can "rainbow" as rock climbers call it. For example, all the pinks on a certain area of the wall could be V0 (easiest) and V1 is the next hardest, which could be black or something. One of the staff members said they switch the climbing routes frequently so that the walls are never the same. That's pretty cool! It's also cool that you can bring your dogs here. There are areas dispersed around the gym where you can tie your dog's leash. There are also cubbies to place your belongings, as well as a locker room with showers. The women's locker room even has a vanity area. A staff member said that Sacramento Pipeworks is Alex Honnold's home gym. Ooo celebrity sighting chance! (He's the first ever person to climb El Capitan with no harness). So maybe one day we can run into him! haha The staff is friendly, there are so many things to do here. It is a little pricey for a membership - $100 initiation fee and $78/month for adults. But you pay for what you get. I forgot the price of a day pass (around $25 I think), but I'll definitely come back for more climbing. read more

Sucks that the tutorial takes long for first timers but they are pretty cool and try to be quick and to the point. After seeing Free Solo, my son couldn't help but want to try climbing. We found Pipeworks and went in to check the place out. It's nothing short of amazing and while we're certainly not experienced climbers, I can't imagine another facility really doing a better job in terms of the bouldering and belay climbing variety and options here. We signed up for a recurring monthly membership but later learned there was a monthly option, which probably would have been the better move for us given the fickle nature of ten year olds. After a few tries, we realized this wasn't the right time for us and when we inquired about cancelling, Jason, the guy who also signed us up, couldn't have been more nice about even making that a great experience for us. The customer service approach they have is second to none and as soon as we're ready to get back out there and give it another try, I wouldn't even consider other options. Pipeworks is the best and couldn't be more welcoming to beginners like us or experienced climbers like we saw all throughout the gym. read more
