Visited 7/15 for dinner. It was not good. Ordered 1/3lb brisket moist (received lean), 1/3lb pulled pork, and baby back ribs. The brisket had no flavor and was tough. Ribs were mediocre at best. Most of the rib meat stuck to the bone and was rather tough but still "sweet" (as rib meat often is). The pulled pork, I wouldn't feed it to my dog. Terrible. It had the texture of pine needles and tasted like month old leftovers. The owner (or manager, I can't tell but he was the one ordering people around though) was loud (so loud he could be heard over the other patrons talking) and oddly confident for someone with such terrible BBQ. I cannot stress how poor this BBQ is. Really really bad. I would have asked for money but I was hungry, had work to do and didn't need an awkward conversation with the loud guy at the register. read more

Probably some of the best BBQ in the Lansing area. The REO Town location is in the developing stretch on Washington and it's a small space that is counter service and probably holds 30 people or so. Keep that it mind because there isn't too much room to eat there. My favorite item there are the ribs. They are done with a dry rub but with lots of flavor. The meat didn't fall off the bone as much as I'd like but they were still very good. Other things I've tried include the brisket and the chicken, which are also good. Most of the sides I had were good too including the Corncakes, Beans, and Mac n Cheese. I would personally pass on the collard greens and pork rinds though. All this food cost about $35-$40. Service was quick, the staff were friendly, and take out was pretty easy. I definitely recommend this place when looking for BBQ in the Lansing area. read more

Ordered a $13 chicken burrito that was supposed to come with cilantro lime rice, black beans, salsa, queso fresco, guac, and sour cream. Instead I just got chicken, rice, beans, and salsa. No cheese, no guac, no sour cream. Chicken and beans were almost flavorless. Wouldn't have been such an issue if the price was much lower. Sorta pricey for meager servings. My chicken (ALL of the ONE drumstick and thigh) was not good and I had a heck of a time separating the two pieces, which indicated that it wasn't cooked very long. The skin was inedible. The "Side Order" of corn mush was the size of a small ice cream scoop. $3.50 for an order of fries. Almost fifty bucks for the three of us. Very limited seating. Ain't no doubt about it, I'm in love. I'm a pescatarian most days, a vegetarian many and a vegan few but I'm a carnivorous woman to the core. When I want a good cut of juicy meat... this is where I feast. I've been a non beef eater for over 10 years at this point so don't ask me about the brisket. I can tell you the chicken tacos, the turkey, the pulled pork and the sides all shout the praises of the preparers. The tacos come with depth flavored in cilantro, onion, tomato, cheese and a pico that can't be replicated. The order comes with three but, if you can order double, eat four and save two for later. Smoked turkey carved neatly and laid before me is how I imagine my life on a weekly basis. They make this fantasy real. Not that the mid smoke and juicy slow roast taste needs anything but all three of their sauces (mustard, vinegar and traditional) complement it. I don't order sides as the jalapeño corncake is the cherry on top of flavor and fullness of the turkey. MMM pulled pork sandwiches. The pulled pork is more dry than the turkey but the sauces revive anything lost in the juices. There's not a lot of fat, grissle or inedible parts, just pieces of well smoked and cooked pork. My favorite side with this is the baked beans (has brisket) but I am drawn to mix my pork n beans next time. (if this become a dish, call it The Highness). Their fries replaces your favorite fries, without ketchup, their beans seasoned well and cooked to perfect texture and their corncakes give me comforting love. The potato salad was a bit chunky and stiff for my liking but it's seasoned like someone knows good food. The pork rinds should be bagged and sold in stores. I grew up on rinds and cracklings and had never experienced them freshly made until now. These are worth a try even if you've never had pork rinds. The service is fast and sweet but once you're eating you'll be lost in the sauce with little care for a napkin or a refill or their Southern Sweet Tea. This isn't a place for health nuts this is a place for those who love to feast on quality meat. read more

First time checking out Saddleback BBQ after hearing great things. All in all, it lived up to expectations. I ordered the brisket sandwich with pork rinds. It came with picked veggies and a jalapeño corn cake on the side. The brisket sandwich was delicious with or without sauce. It was topped with some slaw, which was alright, but definitely outshined by the rest of the flavors. The meat was tender and just fatty enough. The pork rinds were tasty, but a bit too spicy for me to actually finish the large serving. It was plenty of food for just over $10.00. The brisket was served without sauce, but three sauces are available to top your food. One standard sauce with a bit of a kick (which I went with), a vinegar-based sauce (which generally aren't my preference), and a mustard-based sauce (also not generally my preference). The sauce was flavorful and also had just enough of a kick. As a major spice wimp, the combined spice of the pork rind seasoning and the sauce wasn't enough to hurt, but enough to keep my mouth pleasantly tingling for a while after I finished eating. The restaurant is clean and beautifully decorated with a mix of classic details and modern ones. Beautiful vintage-looking incandescent lights and fixtures contrast with a graffiti-style chalkboard menu and pig mural on the wall. A variety of old-school and new-school hip-hop pumped through the speakers, a bit louder than one might expect at a small restaurant at lunchtime, but it was no problem as far as I'm concerned. Parking in the lot behind the row of shops on Washington Ave in Lansing's REO Town takes you past the back of the restaurant, where you can see the smoker at work. This is real smoked BBQ. Be aware that for restaurants like this, that usually means when they're out, they're out, regardless of what the closing time on the sign says (7-ish, for the record). Saddleback BBQ definitely lives up to the hype, and is well worth the visit to REO Town. I will certainly be back to sample the rest of the menu options. read more

Yum, yum, yum! The sign in the door says, "Come in. We're awesome". Yes, they are awesome! Huge portions of delicious meat, perfect fries (fried in lard), and a scoop of sweet, moist cornbread. Lives up to the hype! Got the brisket, pulled pork, southern slaw, and pork rinds. Brisket and pulled pork come with one small but AWESOME scoop of corncake. Southern slaw is a little spicy, but pairs well with the meat. PORK RINDS (also a little spicy) ARE WHAT MAKE SADDLEBACK STAND OUT. GET THE PORK RINDS. Saddleback is cheaper than similar joints in the area without compromising quality. I also like how they do pricing--they charge the meat and the sides separately. I am a big fan of Saddleback, and I cannot wait until their Okemos location opens. I have been to Saddleback half a dozen times or so, so I figured it was time for a review. To me, the local Lansing BBQ scene is between Meat and Saddleback. I give the Saddleback pork (pulled and ribs) a slight edge as the best in town, while their beef brisket is probably second. I usually get the pulled pork sandwich and the meat is always perfect. The ratio of meat to bun (which is very important) is spot on, and the bun itself is never dry. The meat has a nice smokiness and enough fat to give you that perfect balance (with the sauses). I also find the simple sauces and vinegars that accompany the meat at Saddleback awesome! Simple, but full of flavor and the right amount of spicy. The sides are solid, with the jalapeno corn-cake and pork rinds as my favorites. My first time in Lansing! The bbq was delicious and they give you a mountain of fries! There are several different sauces to us depending on your taste. There are outdoor tables for seating too. It seemed a little grimy inside, but is expected for a bbq joint. This is the only reason I knocked off a star. Went and got pick up and then ate on their patio. Very friendly service and good food. I wish they'd have some more spicy sauce options but I'm not going to fault them for that. It is a bit pricey but most BBQ is. I got a pulled pork plate with the Mac n cheese as my side. The cornbread they include has a tiny bite to it and is just great. Well, here we are again... And saddleback does not disappoint. My son and I shared the ribs, pulled pork sandwich and brisket. All were excellent with a nice looking smoke ring and a good crust on the meats. The only things we tried different from the last time was the lemonade and the sweet tea. The lemonade is fresh made and not from powder. The sweet tea is amazing. The cashier was quick to point out it was down south sweet tea, not like McDonald's. She was right. I miss the REAL sweet tea from when I lived down south!!! Very good again Saddleback. We will be back!!! read more
