So my family has had a Safeway card in the past. I didn't have my physical card on me and the woman couldn't look me up. I asked to get a new card and after my shop the woman said she didn't have any physical cards on her. So while I was checking out, there was a huge line behind me and I had to return half the items because they charged me full price and wouldn't honor the points. The woman behind me kindly offered if I could use her card for once to receive the discount but the cashier said no. So one by one, each item had to be returned. What a disaster. They easily could have honored it once, since it was honestly their fault they didn't have physical cards to re-sign up with. Will not return. read more

Interesting that not one negative review has been addressed by the store management here. Clearly they don't give a damn how despised this store is by people. I've been shopping here for the past 10 years and it has consistently gone downhill over the past 2-3 years. I find it amazing that a store with fully stacked shelves never has anything I want to buy. The constant reorganizing and relocation of aisles is ridiculous and does nothing but frustrate and irritate shoppers. But by far the WORST is the self-service salad bar where person responsible for stocking is the laziest and most apathetic employee I have ever encountered. A lot of people these days take lunch at 11am but consider yourself lucky if the counter is stocked by 11:30am. Trying to talk to the employee responsible is a waste of effort because they just stand and stare at you and then walk away without a word. When they do bring food out, they make a point of walking as slowly as humanly possible. I tried talking with a store manager about this once but after waiting 30 minutes for that person to show up I walked out. terrible customer service from the employee at self check. not just to me, but to the guy in front of me too. when i asked to talk to the manager, the store manager came over, refused to manually enter the credit card number of my credit card with a bad mag strip. when i asked why, she just gave a sing-songy tone and said "its our policy! sor-ry! and grinned! this store continues the trend of awful and uncaring service of Safeway, proving its from the top, down. OK, this store rocks. I don't get all the downers, frankly I find everyone who works here to be warm, friendly, positive and helpful. Their organic selection for a conventional grocery store is substantial, and I find the quality quite good. They also have a big natural foods section, which offers many of the choices of food found at Whole Foods or Vitamin Cottage, and at very affordable prices. I recommend the $5 sushi on Fridays, a great deal. This store is the busiest Safeway in Colorado, I'm not surprised. Kudos to the management and staff, thanks for being so excellent! read more

The location is convenient for the route to/from my home, but I find that I shop here less and less. They remodeled recently and they did a nice job; however, now they move the products around with a maddening frequency. We all know that supermarkets often distribute items to maximize impulse buys as you are are forced to move around the store to find related products -- this place takes that to a new level and just when you have the layout figured out, they go and move it around again. Basically, I hate going into this store. It always takes more time than it should... Always. If that's not enough, the culture among their employees is horrible. There seems to be lots of unhappy employees and it shows in how they deal with customers (just try calling this place and getting through to a specific department). If you're there in all but the busiest hours of the day you'll be forced to use the self-checkout isles, which makes the process even more inefficient (why don't we receive a discount for that...?). Bottom line - I drive past them whenever I have the chance and spend more at other stores. It's gotten that bad. I should add that the folks in the pharmacy are always great. read more

Customer service is horrible. The women (manager) who helped me, had a bad attitude, never said hi or was friendly, she threw the receipt at me, and didn't even tell me the total for my purchase. Every time I go in she has the same attitude and is never friendly. Maybe it's time to change jobs if she hates it so much! read more

I wish Safeway would accommodate mothers with infants. Store such as King Soopers and Walmart they have infant car seat holders Safeway does not. Used to shop at Safeway at least twice a day but since I've had my kid and they do not accommodate children with car seats I have stopped such a shame. read more

This Safeway is in real need of an upgrade to it's management. The "manger," which is a questionable title for this person, named Joy, had all the like ability of a dead moth. I called to see about getting a purchase refunded because the bagger left out my steak (yay, unwanted surprise dinner plan). Next Joy with the oxymoronic moniker informs me of the policy against refunds over the phone. I understand the reason, so not my beef here. It was the general disdain with which I was treated for being one of those annoying customer people that deigned to ask a question or take away her precious time from drowning kittens, or whatever she was doing that put her in such a dour mood. Good riddance, Safeway. I'll be back to recover my $10.87 and that'll be the last time. read more

I had the unfortunate experience of shopping here during my lunch break today. Sadly because only one checkout line was open everyone was forced to use the self check (not a big deal). However the woman MAGDLINE working this area was HORRIBLE. I explained that my produce was not ringing up correctly, she stated " I cant leave this area there is nothing I can do about it" and walks away?! Not accepting this as an answer I left my groceries to go back into the produce isle to take a picture of the sign and bring it back. After she saw that I wasn't lying to her she finally proceeded to ring me up correctly, but not before she could throw a coworker under the bus complaining about the people she works with. MAGDALINE is extremely unprofessional and is a terrible representation of the company. I pity her coworkers and anyone that would have to come into contact with this woman!! read more

This place is as expensive as Whole Foods. You might as well just shop there if you want to dump a lot of $$ on groceries.

I love Safeway. I hate Whole Foods and King Soopers. As opposed to those clowns, Safeway always provides nice, friendly service. Unlike Whole Foods, I do not feel like punching everyone in the place upon my departure. Unlike King Soopers, Safeway treats folks with respect and courtesy. Further, with the addition of their natural foods department, I go 4 miles further just to shop at this particular store. Some clown wrote about "corporate evil bla bla bla." To him/her/it, I say go live in a lean-to, hovel, or a teepee, and be at peace with your fantasy. Whilst I am no capitalist but seems Safeway tries and succeeds at providing what folks need. Unlike Whole Foods and King Soopers, Safeway provides this service with kindness, patience and courtesy. The place is a business, needs to make a profit, but nevertheless, I never feel I am treated like some pawn in a capitalist chess match. read more

Just moved to town and this Safe Way gets my approval! Don't know about all the bad reviews but I have never had any problems. Store is clean and prices are good. I don't do all my shopping here as the organic & natural section isn't the biggest but the store is great in my opinion. There is a juice bar and a Starbucks in the building too! read more

Their Starbucks is awesome and staff is friendly ... But their deli staff seems to have it in their heads that they are there strictly to do the job they are assigned. We waited for 20 minutes trying to get a sandwich and everyone behind their counter just stared at us without asking if they could help us with something. Yep, the people running this store have driven it into a ditch. The bakery used to have well made and fresh baked bread that was actually fresh. It is now consistently poorly made and generally days old. If you don't look carefully at the date or fight the flies for a fresher unbagged loaf you'll be hard pressed to eat it before it sprouts mold. The natural foods section has been steadily losing decent products which seem to get replaced by lower grade pseudo-natural versions. Not specific to this store but the inconsistent naming makes it hard to look things up alphabetically at the self checkout. It's stunningly moronic even for a big corporation. read more

3 stars because of the man who ended up fixing the situation. I am visiting boulder with my parents and my boyfriend. My mom, boyfriend and I visited this Safeway yesterday and purchased food and beer. Today when my boyfriend and I went into this Safeway to purchase some sparkling water and beer the cashier, Sarah S. told us that we had already reached our beer limit for the day. We thought she was joking then she sad she was serious. We told her that we may look familiar because she was our cashier yesterday, but that we had not been into the store today. She started rambling about how she needed to take her break and would only sell us the sparkling water. We agreed and did the transaction. When the other employee working the self checkout saw how we were unhappy and she stormed off saying she was taking her break with her checkout light still on he apologized for the situation. He told us that this was not the first time this happened with Sarah S. He completed our transaction for the beer and apologized again for her erratic behavior. It seems like this Sarah S. May have other issues and maybe a less customer service centered position may suit her better read more

I am a student in Boulder and I live down the street from safeway making the location very helpful. When I go in there is always a female cashier who has a bad attitude. I have never had any serious problems with her until today. I had a coupon on my phone for free large white eggs. I have used the coupons before and I checked it in my cart so it could be used. When it did not show up on her side I showed her my phone to prove I had the coupon. She then began accusing me of trying to get free things and scamming the store. This went on for a while and I asked how I can make sure that my coupons can be used as I was NOT trying to scam the store. She raised her voice at me and continued to accuse me of trying to unfairly get free things. I told her to just charge me because there was a line behind me and I didn't want to hold up other customers. She continued raising her voice and accusing me. At this point I was completely embarrassed. I have worked as a cashier at a grocery store and I understand if coupons don't work she could have just said it wasn't working. I was on the verge of tears and will be making their manager aware of this. read more

I have to admit this Safeway is clean and full of fun stuff like a sushi bar, starbucks and jamba juice. However the quality of organic produce makes me give 2 stars. Yesterday nearly all of the lettuce and all of the strawberries were rotten! I'll stick to King Scoopers and the farmers market for my veggies. read more

A pet peeve of mine is stores that fail to train their employees. The Safeway in Boulder, Colo. (Iris & 28th) charged me $3.00 to use its ATM even though the machine shows a STAR logo that matches the one on the back of my card. (At every other ATM I have used, if your card's logo is shown, there is no transaction fee.) The man at the Service Desk said he never heard of any logos on cards or machines and told me to call my bank -- even offered to let me use his phone! He must be new or need more training. read more

Decent selection of organic produce and open late, prices are lower than wf and you will see lots of the same things but not all. I wish this location would keep self checkout lanes open late because it seems like there's always a awkward line of people waiting for one exhausted employ to check them out when I come in after 11pm. read more

What has happened to Safeway? In my opinion, this is the only local one left that stocks well and has a decent selection of natural and organic options. I have shopped here since it opened. I made the mistake of offering a little constructive criticism and was treated to blank incomprehension and then rude dismissal. I merely pointed out that the inconsistent naming of produce made it hard to look up alphabetically at the self checkout. The employee looked down her nose at me and with disdain gave a generic suggestion on looking things up (that I had already found ineffective). When I tried to explain why it didn't work because the naming system was inconsistent she snapped back that if they did it "my" way some other customer would complain that they didn't like it. So, some other customer likes it that some apples are under "apple, pippin" and others are under "red apple"? Stupid doesn't shock me, but that level or rudeness in a retail customer service position does. read more

Compared to other specialty grocery stores in Boulder, there's nothing particularly special about Safeway. That said, I do almost all my grocery shopping there. They offer a great selection of organic produce that seems to expand every year, and I rarely see bad produce on display. It's also conveniently located on the Elmer's Two Mile bike path. I would highly recommend their pre-cooked Alaska salmon as an excellent alternative for those who want the health benefits and none of the cooking fumes. They recently started offering online coupons ("Just For U") which have recently become rather disappointing but are worth checking before you shop. It is difficult not to leave this store angry on every visit. Upon entering, one is usually accosted by either a sales person or someone begging for some charity - since the store (a good thing) employs many mentally handicapped folks, this entry person is difficult to criticize. At check-out the cashiers are required to walk around to inspect your cart to see if you are stealing anything (on the bottom of the cart); after this insult/affront, they then beg for some charity of the week. The store provides no proof that they actually give any of the collected funds to any charity - highly unlikely. Then there is the deli, where most of the workers are in back and very few are ever available to wait on customers. I recommend bringing a whistle to get attention. Many customers walk away in disgust. Finally, the fish/meat counter is grossly understaffed during busy times - you can be #12 for service with one disabled worker s-l-o-w-l-y waiting on a customer. While I am frustrated with Boulder Whole Foods and all their non-recyclable containers, their service and selection blow away this Safeway. My wife refuses to shop here anymore, and I'm about to follow. Too bad. It is convenient! read more

I have mixed feelings about this Safeway. On the one hand, they have the large 'culinary' area where sometimes a nice woman cooks tasty samples and gives them away along with recipes. On the other hand, the bulk foods section is always out of staples, there's often food all over the floor, and no bags to be found. The produce is pretty hit-or-miss. I will give them credit for having things like whole lemongrass and dried chiles by the pound. At Whole Foods, you have to buy your lemongrass cut up in a little plastic box. Kind of ironic. The cheese and dairy selection here is laughable. How hard would it be for them to at least stock some decent parmesan and pecorino (not pre-grated) and some decent eggs? I find myself having to go to Lucky's pretty frequently to buy things like this. The beer and wine selection here is terrible. I am an employee of Safeway. I have over 22 years of experience in the field I was hired for. I started working for Safeway one week ago and of course starting out at a new job, one begins at the bottom intending on working their way up. At least that's my goal when I start any job...to excel and become valuable to the establishment that I work for as well as the customers. I am 43 years old. Not a child. However, I called in to let the management know that I could not make it to work because I had been hospitalized that morning for severe neck pain...which could be caused from my job at Safeway and encountered a rude voice at the other end of the phone line. It was management. I believe her name is Loretta. She sighed, gave me a grunt of disapproval them proceeded to look up my name and inform the clerk on duty in my department that I wouldn't be in today. Loretta was back on the phone with me after I'd been put on hold for several minutes and explained hastily that I would need to call back every day that I did not show up for work and then she hung up on me. Never once did she ask me if I was ok or that at the least hoped I felt better soon. Safeway does not employ management or train management to be kind to their employees. Instead it's as if employees that have worked there the longest assume that they are somehow better than everyone else and enjoy throwing their weight around. I felt like I was treated like an incompetent child who was irresponsible or calling in sick to go party when I was in total pain. I have to children to take care of and missing any work is a big deal to me! I will be seeking other employment now and will not recommend shopping at the grocery store or working there either. I agree with Bob L.'s comments entirely. I have realized that it is not worth shopping there either, even if it is convenient. At the deli counter, they pre-slice large quantities of cheese days ahead of time and leave it in the front of the deli case. If you ask for fresh sliced, they will flat out refuse to slice it for you... even if you would like it thinner or thicker than the pre-sliced stuff. I also agree that many of the cashiers are absurdly rude. I had forgotten my re-usable bags at a visit there and got a nasty lecture on how the plastic ones are filling up landfills etc. This eco-stance is funny coming from a Safeway store with what I imaging is an enormous carbon footprint, and a policy of serving pink slime to customers until last week. There are many great options for groceries in Boulder, including Whole Foods, King Soopers, Lucky's, Sunflower, Alfalfas, the Farmers Market... and soon Trader Joes. Safeway should be trying to win on customer service, but obviously they don't care. read more

I live right by this Safeway but I go to the one on Arapahoe because I will never step foot in this one again. I am a senior and several times when I went thru the self checkout the lady who is at that post yelled at me so badly on 2 different occasions she had me in tears. The first time I tried to ring up something that didn't come up on the register. I just stood there and waited till she was available to ask for help. She came over yelling at me saying I was supposed to turn the red light on to get her attention. She kept ragging on me for about 5 min till I left in tears. About a week later again I had a problem with an item in self checkout and turned on the red light. I stood patiently waiting trying not even to make eye contact with her, after 5 min she came and started yelling again saying she was too busy to be answering red lights. WTF? Isn't that her job? After that I avoided self checkout when she was there. Until the next incident that I have never stepped into the store since. I went to customer service to get 6 $3 lottery tickets. The bald guy behind the counter goes to power ball machine and does whatever and tells me it's $72. I'm like, no it should be $18 and I said you must have done something wrong and he starts yelling he didn't do anything wrong it was my mistake and he is just going off at me demanding I give him $72 and I'm trying to explain that it's simple math, 6 x 3 is 18 and he's still yelling loud enough everyone is looking over and over it's my mistake. I don't know if he thought I was stupid and he was going to pocket the difference or he never made it past kindergarten to get to grade school simple math either way anyone who can't understand 6 x 3 is 18 has no business working in a store. I left without tickets and have never stepped foot in there again. I have never been treated this way in my life anywhere except in this store. read more
