I'm only giving 2 stars because the store was clean. I'm giving the employees 1 star. The first thing I noticed is none of the employees spoke to us, smiled or asked if they could help. There was one loud mouth kid standing in front of the closed pharmacy window just yaking to a friend about some sporting event he watched. As we went up and down the isles, you could still hear him. Twice, customers asked him where something was and he just pointed and gave direction instead of taking the customer to the spot. It came time to check out and I told my wife that I was too tired to fight with the self checkout trying to scan the water. There were only 2 checkstands open at 7:30 on a Friday night and one of them had no line. As I was unloading our cart the checker, Mauro was arguing (playfully) with a coworker about the length of his break. After the girl walked away it got quiet. He never looked up, never greeted us, never asked if we found everything he was very rude. My wife pointed out the water on the bottom of the cart, I don't even know if he would have noticed. I've been in the retail management business and I know the value of customer service. This store has none and it starts at the top. The only redeeming employee was the kid collecting carts in the parking lot. After we loaded the car, he walked over and said he would take our cart and actually smiled. read more

We came on an interesting night. There were only 2-3 cashiers open so when we walked in the lines were long. But we needed groceries so oh well. Went through the aisles getting what we needed. Ran into some nice workers and also two who seemed to be bickering about a schedule or positions. Random but whatevs. Halfway through we noticed the lines were real short so we tried to hurry it up. Fail! Somehow we took even longer so by the time we got to the line only 1-2 were open. One cashier decided to reopen his cause he saw the line which was line. But it was the 15 items or less line so we couldn't go. At first our cashier seemed like she wasn't in the mood but once we got to her she was really sweet. She also kept thanking me for bagging my groceries myself. I guess a lot of people just expect them to do it even if it's ridiculously busy. Either way we appreciated the thanks! I love cheap priced gas, especially when you get the dollar discount for spending mucho money at the store. I like the quick mart attached to it. I went here last week at 5:00am and the guy working was hilarious. This lady came in and was really impatient. It's 5:00am and he was doing some work in the back. So instead of her saying "hello, can I get some help please", she waited for him to come out then was like "this is ridiculous, i was standing here for so long...here, $13 on 2". They guy said, "ma'am, i need to count it in front of you just in case. Please" The lady kept walking so he said it a bit louder, "Ma'am, i need to count it just in case. It's policy." The lady was having none of it and said, "I said it was $13.00 and it's $13.00". "But ma'am, if it's short or there's more we don't want any confusion and any problems to arise." says the man. She replied, "ughhhh, this is ridiculous. FINE, COUNT IT!! Thirteen, right?!" then she looks at me like i'm suppose to agree with her and I just smirked. So the guy counts it and enters $13.00 on 2. The best thing about this story is that she was on pump 4 and he knew it. So he tells me, "she's on pump 4, not 2. She's gonna be mad- but she told me pump 2 so pump 2 is ready to go." Sure enough she comes storming back into the mart and yells at the guy, "I SAID PUMP 2!!!!" So the guy replies, "I know... but you're on 4." and smiles. "Drive your car back to pump 2." "F-YOU, I meant 4". and he just smiles and says "2 is ready to go ma'am. you said 2 not 4, so please drive back to 2". This lady was so mad and kept looking at me like I was going to get involved and come to her rescue. That guy ruled and regulated that mean old lady. It was way to early for her shenanigans. This is one of the best Safeways I have seen. It is not only large, but its extremely clean and neat. They have an excellent selection of items in their bakery, deli and hot entree food sections. The only downside is that their gas station is always packed, but that is because they offer cheap gas. read more

So there's a problem with this safeway now. First off, it's not the people who work in the store, The store employees are still super awesome, and the only reason I am okay with giving the one star you have to put at the least. (they are, themselves, worthy of five stars, but recent problems with other areas of the store are just really bad) The problems are of a technical nature in the store, and with the gas station. First off in the store: The self check out stands are SUPER annoying. They can't sense your bags, which would be fine, if they didn't seem to think they SHOULD BE ABLE TO and bring your transaction to a screeching halt every time you put something in a bag. The stands that used to be there for the plastic bags have been removed so now there's nothing to HOOK your bag open on, and everytime you touch your bag to open it and put something in the checkstand robot freaks out like you killed it's robo-dog. And not only do they not work very well, but at least twice now I have decided I just didn't want to deal with them only to find they were the only option because there was no human checker or open check out lane where there should be one. There should always be a human checker available, sometimes your particular transaction will require human assistance, and sometimes you just don't feel like wrestling with the poorly programmed robot. And they are getting worse. "Unexpected Item in the Bagging Area"?!?! What? the Bags? the Groceries? Which of those things weren't you expecting, grocery bagging station? Second: You REALLY really need to get your gas station guys some traffic directing training. Or, at the very least train them to not stand directly in the only available path for the car they are trying to make go forward, it seems like every other time I go there the guy directing traffic tries to wave me right into him by standing where I would need to drive to go where he wants me to go. Look, Suicide is a personal choice, and I really don't want to get preachy with you about how your friends and loved ones would miss you, and even if everything seems hard right now, I have faith that you can fight through and make it, and also PLEASE DO NOT INVOLVE ME IN YOUR DEATH. If you want me to squeeze between two cars to go around one to the pump in front, that's fine, BUT, you are going have to NOT STAND IN THE ONLY PLACE I CAN MOVE MY CAR TO GET THERE. ALSO they really need to do something about the entrance to the gas station. It's the only easy turn to get into the entire lot, and the amount of times the line has blocked the entrance ... it's getting more and more frequent. there were four cars coming off the gas station a few days ago, blocking the driveway, and the guy who I think was supposed to be directing traffic was just standing there. another time, the guy was trying to send people around, but I was going straight to go to the store and he got carried away trying to make me go around the side and get in the gas line... I was afraid he was going to jump in front of my car. It is just so very poorly laid out, They really needed to build it in a different spot or make it have a dedicated entrance. They should actually look into making that back driveway a gas only entrance, or at least post some signs that point the way to go for the gas line, cause the traffic directing is just not cutting it. read more

This review is for this specific Safeway, though after my experience, I won't shop at any Safeway anymore. I recently went to this Safeway at night. Towards the back, I heard an employee say "GO HOME". While I thought this to be unprofessional, I had no idea if he was talking to a co-worker or customer, and "shrugged it off". When I was ready to check out, I got to the registers, and both available lines had roughly 6-8 people/groups waiting to check out. Annoying but out of the hands of Safeway (they can't tell people when to shop, and we all just happened to show up at the same time). The troubling part was when one of the checkers said on the intercom, "Oscar, please check up front please", the same guy that said "go home" earlier yelled out "NOPE". I turned to see if I had actually heard that, and the other customers around me all had the same look, as if "Are you kidding me? Did he really just say that?" We all waited for another checker to help out, and again on the intercom, one of the checkers said "Oscar, can you help check out please?" Again, an even louder "Nope!". Unfortunately, I was there for food for my family, othewise I would have left right there. How's THAT for customer service? I will never shop at Safeway again if this is the level of service provided. Side note: I called the next day to speak to a mgr. I was left on hold for 15 min (no joke, I timed it), and was eventually the mgr was not available. Unbelieveable.... read more

***UPDATE*** Since my review in 2011, I actually became very fond of this location. The staff were friendly and stopped following me around the store. lol The shelves were always stocked and produce was great. And best of all, they moved you through the lines pretty swiftly. Well .... in the last 6 months, that has all changed and I'm so bummed by it. WHERE HAVE ALL THE CHECKERS GONE???? I routines stop here on my way home from work around 5:30-6:00pm as do many other customers. I keep encountering LONG lines because they only have two checkstands open and lines are 7 or 8 people deep. The produce is either crappy or gone and I feel like every time they play that dumb Monopoly Game, prices go up. And can someone please tell the two checkers to stop the chatting and start the bagging? OMG we're all tired and hungry and want to get out of there so be courteous and move faster. They have a "We're Hiring" sign on the doors so hopefully they so in fact hire soon. I never thought I'd say this but I think I'll start shopping elsewhere if things don't get better. Maybe a new GM would help? **Prior Review** The store just opened so yes it's going to be crowded and it's typical to have a hard time parking. Those things I can take in stride. But over all this store is a miss for me and I'm totally disappointed because it's right around the corner from my house! Not crazy about the store layout, there was flank steak on the meat shelf that had already turned brown because the seal was ripped yet I noticed the butcher didn't remove it. Yuck. The strawberries were all moldy. Yuck. And every time I turned a corner some random employee asked if I needed help finding anything. I think customer service is fantastic but being asked the same question 12 times in 30 minutes is a little over the top. But I have to give em an A for effort and enthusiasm. I really like this Safeway grocery store, but the gas station is very strange. Lines can be very long during rush hours. That is to be expected. Kind of like a Costco station set-up. But the gas pump payment system is soooooo slllooooooooww. You enter your Safeway ID number ( to get the discount ), then wait for confirmation, enter your credit card, wait, wait, wait for confirmation. Pump your gas, then wait, wait for a receipt. It's the slowest responding system I've ever seen. Maybe it will improve in time. By all means, come here for your next fill up. It's about the cheapest gas around. And the attendants help direct traffic to guide you to an open pump. But be prepared for the wacky pump payment experience. read more

This review is for the gas station. The lines here are often longer than Costco stations do to the fact that four pumps are lined up in a single file. Often times, there are free pumps in but is too difficult to see infront of cars (or lazy drivers) so drivers just sit and wait until the car infront moves to reveal two or more pumps are free. Once you are at the pump, the POS terminal takes forever to process a transaction. You have to click buttons mulpitle times in order for the system to recognize inputs. Often times, not allowing you to enter a phone number. The system should be completely overhauled to make transactions smoother. Finally, The gas attendant is mostly useless. He attempts to direct cars but is completely blind to see the open pumps that drivers can pull into. read more

Some good, some bad: decent range of products and good prices, but produce is often of poor quality and you need to check the expiration dates carefully. Nearly bought a product the other night that had expired in November of 2017 (it's currently March of 2018, so that's 4 months past the expiration date). Wish I could say this is only issue I've had with nearly buying expired goods there--it isn't. Customer service is solid. The Starbucks inside is kind of sad, as Starbucks locations go. But the indoor and outdoor seating areas are nice, if you have the time to hang out. Bottom line: it's not that different from any other Safeway. And check the expiration dates!! read more

Pretty darn good Safeway - started with 4 but will boost them to 5 for their type of store. Good employees for the most part. There is a manager - a woman from Gilroy - so sorry c/n remember your name - who is really helpful and went out of her way to help me. When I complained about the dripping mess of picking up beef packages and need for something to clean and sanatize - they listened and now have alcohol hand wipes and sanitizere and extra plastic bags to wrap the meat. read more

First of all, sorry about this review being delayed, but I think it's still important to post it so it doesn't happen to anyone else since it's regarding expired food. This Safeway is nice, bright, well-stocked, and I usually had a pleasant shopping experience when I did my weekly grocery shopping here, but a couple months ago, I bought a box of nutrition/protein bars here and realized when I took a bite out of the first bar a few days later, something wasn't right, and sure enough, the expiration date on the box said April 2013! I took back the box of bars the next time I was at this Safeway, and walked up to the customer service booth and explained the situation. The girl working that day, Mayra, barely looked at me, didn't seem to care and was unapologetic. I mentioned that they might want to check the other boxes on the shelf, but she still didn't say anything and just refunded my money. Well I appreciate that, but the attitude was really not necessary. I definitely have not shopped here as much since this incident. I am reviewing the gas station at this location and giving 1 star because I have to give a "star" Although the gas prices here are competitive, I don't think it's worth the savings, if you are even saving that much. The lines are long, which is understandable since there aren't much pumps and the prices are cheap so I am not complaining about that... But what upsetted me was their POS system! It takes forever just to process your safeway card #, credit card and receipt!!! I realized this may be the cause of the long wait just to pump gas! This safeway is my go-to grocery store for anything and everything. I'm a regular at this location and come here pretty often (1-2x a week), so I have a general idea of where everything is when I go shopping. They have a big selection of red meats and porks to choose from, but have a much smaller selection for chicken and seafood. They also have a big alcohol selection ranging from wines, sake, spirits, and beer- all of which are good prices, especially when they're on sale. I find the best prices at safeway over any other grocery store, liquor store, or bevmo. If you have a safeway club card, you can def save a couple of dollars when items are on sale. Also, for every $100 you spend (cumulatively), you get 10 cents off a gallon towards both safeway and chevron gas stations. Lastly, I really enjoy their deli because the sandwiches/food items are affordable and delicious. My favorite item from the deli is actually the breakfast burrito which comes with your choice of bacon or sausage, eggs, potato wedges, cheese, and your choice of sauce (chipotle, ranch, etc). There's a hefty amount of ingredients that go into it, all for the price of $2.50. And the best part is that it counts towards your safeway deli rewards (buy 7 sandwiches/burritos, get 1 free). I know that safeway doesn't always have the cheapest prices for produce, especially since I also shop at asian markets where everything is dirt cheap, but I do enjoy the comfort and cleanliness that this location has to offer. read more

This place gets 4 stars because of their gas station that is located directly opposite of a USA gas station, laughing at the little thing because it knows how many customers it's stealing away every minute with the significantly lower prices. The line for gas can get pretty long, but they have a lot of pumps and an attendant directing traffic so it moves pretty quickly. The store is bigger than it's predecessor in WestGate Mall, and conveniently not a dump or an ugly third world plastic meat locker looking thing that finally shut down. The food selection is comparable to any large Safeway as might be expected, but they also have every department including bakery and deli. For the $32.28 mocha late lovers out there, you can also get a fresh Starbucks at this location. They seemed to have a bigger wine selection than average, but the best Safeway I've seen for wine locally would be the Saratoga location on Saratoga-Sunnyvale. read more

I expected better after hearing so much about this "new Safeway" that moved into the empty Mervyn's. I'd have to say, I'm not impressed. They've organized (or rather DIS-organized) the produce department so it will sort of, almost, not really look like a farmer's market or something. All it ends up doing is making you circle and circle trying to find the celery. Everything is in islands that you can't see over. I'm glad I went to Oakmont Produce (1 block away toward San Thomas) first and got most of what I needed because getting everything there would have been an exercise in frustration. Also, in general, Safeway's meat departments have been going down-hill over the past two years. I went in search of a chuck roast to make pot-roast. All I found were a couple of 2 lb pieces of sadness with big chunks of fat running through the center. At least a quarter of that roast had to be fat. Normally, you don't have to have excellent meat to make pot-roast, but that's just terrible. I had to drive down to Zanatto's for something decent. I'd rather pay more rather than put hard work and other quality ingredients into something that isn't going to be good in the end. Luckily, I got there at a time when it wasn't busy, but I can see what other Yelpers mean about the parking situation. It's also really dim in there. I don't know if they are trying to save power or trying to lull us all into a peaceful calm so we'll buy more. The Safeway on S. Winchester is much better (the one near Budd, NOT near Steven's Creek--that place is d-i-r-e!). They have all the same stuff, but the store is bigger, better organized, is better lit, and has better parking. What ever I can't get at Zanatto's, I'll be getting there. read more

This is my go-to store when i'm on my way home. If i'm cooking other-than-viet food, this is where I like to go. The parking lot kind of sucks and the location is not very good because the intersection is very busy. I would hate to live in the area because this store is never a quick trip to the market. Quick & Dirty Pros: *parking galore *gas station with competitive pricing *very very very nice staff, the most helpful being in the meat department *easy-to-navigate layout *new & clean! *Starbucks inside *easily accessible bathrooms, free of the squick factor Cons: *despite having uber customer service oriented butchers, meat quality often lacking *I've seen iffy fruit too many times *That self checkout thing is the devil... remove your item from the bagging area, wait, no, I meant put it back! Oh, you're using your own bag? Too bad. If you want to get 5 cents off, you have to go to a live person! I really can't complain much. Notice, my pros outweigh the cons (and yes, I do this listing often IRL). Plus, with there being an additional savings on gasoline with each $100 grocery spending increment (barring toilet paper, medicine, and liquid dairy) it definitely pays off. read more

Wow, this is what a Mega Safeway's looks like. We have been pleasantly surprised with this Safeway's, especially the gas station. Yes with your club card you get an extra three cents off. We have also discovered if you purchase $50.00 or more in one purchase inside Safeway's store, they will give you .10 per gallon off your gasoline purchase, which for us means we are purchasing gas for $3.999 per gallon, which is the best price we have found right now. This Safeway's is very clean and of course new, but it looks like they will be keep very good care of this Safeway's as the business will be there. We have enjoyed the location as it is right off of San Thomas Expressway right between alot of other places we need to visit. read more

I am a regular shopper at Safeway. So the perk is getting .10 off each gallon with every $100 I spend. Awesome right? It sure is EXCEPT half the time I come here, out of my way, with my almost completely empty gas tank they aren't opened! I can count on two hands how many times I came here made a loop, because they were closed, and had to buy gas at the shell across the street because I was pretty sure my car wasn't going to make it another mile. When the gas station is actually opened the clerks there are always really nice. Lines can get long but do move pretty fast. I understand that you do need to close the station for maintenance and to load the tanks up with fuel. But if that was the case at least turn off the price sign or put up a huge sign saying closed for an hour or whatever. Or even better, post the hours of operation and add the times your closed for maintenance. I know you do close off the entrance but nobody sees that until there, well at the entrance. read more

I love this safeway, the gas station and the starbucks. The lines are never bad, the parking is good, the people are friendly. The gas prices are awesome. The grocery store itself is clean and easy to get around. They have a big seating area outside and inside near the starbucks which is great for when we grab sandwiches from here. This review is for the bakery. I had to order a cake for my daughters birthday and I was a little iffy ordering it from a Safeway instead of the Hispanic Panaderias I usually went to. I don't like regular sponge cake and I was glad to see that they offered Tres Leches. The baker was there so we could ask him a few questions. They had the design I wanted with the filling and everything was set to pick up in two days. I was blown away by how GREAT the cake was. Staff is super friendly and efficient! Wow I just left here and because people are buying out all the bread, meat, eggs etc the refrigerator areas are clear out. Now it shows how dirty this store is! The meat section where the chicken is kept has blood splatter all up the sides of the wall and the milk refrigerator area smells of rotten milk and vomit. Get busy cleaning up these sess pools. Why aren't you having employees clean during the week with bleach. Whoever the manager is they SUCK and should be fired. I can't imagine what your own home looks like. read more

If I want to pick one item from safeway that would be sourdough. I'm a fan of their bakery and specialty sourdough but for this locations you can feel it's not the same! I made a mistake and chose this location to get a sourdough, first I shocked about their packaging. All sourdough paper bags were oily. Why? I would say poor management! second thing that was odd for me was the color. there was no crust or brown color on top of the bread. Then I waited for 5 minutes to somebody help me and slice the bread but nobody was there. I decided to take the bread and slice it at home. When I opened the bag figured out the bread was old. I mean old old. That's shame for this location and safeway. They have to make sure every locations follow the same process and recipe. read more

ABSOLUTE WORST!!! Ordered a cake for a birthday on Thursday, confirmed it 3 times with the girl over the phone! And Saturday rolls around, go to pick up the cake and it's no where to be found, no slip of my order, nothing. I showed them that I called their phone number and ordered it on Thursday and I get an annoyed manager still questioning if I called the right bakery. Are you kidding me?! You just said that was your number. They do give me a free small cake and said they would write the happy birthday and make it look great for me.... get the cake and I get writing on top of the cake that looks like a 5 year old wrote "Happy B-Day". Funny enough the lady in front of me went into the store and ordered a cake and ended up with the same situation I did.... no record of the cake and a sloppy fix up cake. After hearing so much hype I finally went and visited this mega Safeway to see for myself. It's actually not much different than any other safeway that I've been to, except for the fact that it has a gas station (the prices are better there, I'll give you that). Otherwise, not much to write home about. In fact, I thought that the way they've set up the produce was a little awkward. I struggled to find what I was looking for, and found it difficult to get around the other customers to get what I was after. I think I'll stick with my neighborhood Safeway. read more

This store on a whole has been pretty hit or miss in regard to the level of customer service or shall I say lack of BUT the four times I've used the bakery in the last two years - nothing but stellar service. And so my review is on the bakery. I found out a young man was having a birthday at my son's school but his parents couldn't afford a party for him so he was sad. I don't have much but with the help of dollar tree, big lots, target and Safeway bakery I was able to put together all the makings of a birthday party within 24 hours. The young man has severe autism and is extremely regimented in what he will or will not eat which as a parent of a child whose only food for the last 14 years has been French fries - I can relate! So I went to the bakery late afternoon yesterday and meet with Susanna and Kathy (I hope I got their names correct) and picked out a mini cake with small cupcakes around it. I needed yellow cake and white icing or he wasn't going to even touch it. No problem they said. I told them I needed it by 10am the next morning. No problem they said. Fast forward to a few minutes ago and they delivered the loveliest and to some very plain looking but for this young man it's going to look like magic and unicorns! Thank you Susanna and Kathy for taking my last minute request and making it happen. Rewind - when I walked up to the bakery this morning both Susanna and Kathy were working in the back. When they saw me they both made a point to wave and say hi to me. THIS is the customer service that makes me smile. They remembered me from yesterday and they made a point to say hi with those big beautiful smiles of their faces. I will continue to put up with the lack of customer service throughout the rest of this store (the stories I have of employees walking right by me as I'm looking for something and say not a peep but then are all smiles and hi to the next customer walks down the same aisle) as Susanna and Kathy will be the reason I keep coming back. This is a relatively clean Safeway, due in part to the good manners of the locals. You can see people actually picking up after themselves, occasionally. I know, it's weird. They have good prices on meat, good clearance deals, a Starbucks with luxurious bathrooms, and quietly efficient, well-trained staff with godlike patience. The managers are especially accommodating and quick. They accept recyclables here, too. The reason for the 4 star rating is that they price fresh vegetables as a luxury item. read more

The store reflects the neighborhood, a big jumbled mess. Lets see, I can wait 10-15 minutes to save 10 cents a gallon, thats a dollar for the joy of sitting in a costco style mess for my small commuter car. My time is worth more $6 an hour. Plus you have ahole people directing you. The whole gas station further congests an already cramped and poorly designed parking lot. I'm not sure how this lot made it by city planning but it must have included a boatload of cash. Onto the store, it has a very unique and different style of setup compared to other safeways. I appreciate them trying to go for a unique identity. The produce in front is unique to give it that market feel. I think its the wrong way to go with the community that surrounds it, but I get it. Beyond that, it has the same problems with quality and freshness that any other Safeway has. This has to do with low quality standards instilled by a poor corporate vision and a substandard distribution and vendor network. Opening week for a grocery store is as good as it gets for a store as execs have all eyes watching. Its all downhill from here. read more

Tried to use the buy and go for first time. Arrived at the curb and called the number. Was told that they do not take online order for seafood. My order was placed 3 days ago. And they cancelled my order without any email or text. Tried my luck and walked into the store, and manager said sorry you order was cancelled. No reason given, and seafood still shown in the display and in stock. Worst experience ever. read more

Lets all party like it's 1973!! Ah, the nostalgia of gas lines of the early 70's!!! If you want to re-experience 1973 gas lines, truck on down (ba-da-bumm) to this Safeway gas station until 4/22 for the 10. cents off a gallon. I have suddenly become cheapo with my gas guzzling 6 cylinder truck that I love (a little less these days). After the 22nd, you get 3 cents off a gallon with the club card. Back in the day, I used to do the teenage cringe at my Mom dragging us around looking for items a few cents off. Now I can proudly say [standing up]--I have become my mother! And, the grocery store looks pretty nice and clean. Compared to the Safeways in San Francisco, dang....this is like a five star hotel! read more
