The farm sits at 2 acres and boasts a variety of fruit trees, some bee boxes, a small flower garden, and a very well stocked farmstand. The stand has a variety of in-season fruits and vegetables, starter plants and herbs (they had tomatoes and strawberries when I visited in April), and a bunch of locally made and seasonal goods. Not everything comes from the farm, but they source from other farms in the Bay Area and state, and local businesses. They also work with local businesses to use their produce for fun products like jams, cocktail mixers, and dried fruits. They have tours and events at the farm, we got a tour when we went and it was really cool to learn all about the history, see the different fruit trees, and then of course visit the farmstand after and shop around.

I thought going straight to the source would mean much lower prices, but what you lose in price, you definitely gain in freshness. For example, their strawberries were $5 per little green basket (three for $15), which comes out to about $5 a pound. At Costco, organic strawberries are $5.49 for 2 pounds, roughly $2.75 per pound. The giant seeded watermelons were $12.49 here, compared to $6.49 at Walmart. (Suggestions from a visitor) A couple of friendly suggestions that I think would be really helpful: It would be great if they posted online what fruit is in season and what will be at the stand, along with the prices. That way people can plan ahead and know when to make the drive when their favorite fruits are available. Also, there are no signs letting customers know they can go in the back. I only knew because I saw pictures on Yelp. Locals who've been here before probably already know, but as a first-timer, it looked like an employee-only area so I didn't go back there. A simple sign would be awesome, it would bring more people to the back to sit, eat, and enjoy the space since most fruit stands don't have that nice extra feature. Their chicken is pretty good I like them a lot but they also give you a lot of rice too so I can't finish half of it normally. But then they have Indian curry place that's in front of the chicken place so get the curry to go and I have that with the left over rice later. Every Sunday 9am to 1pm. Plenty of free parking but they get busy so get there early like right before 9. Or come very late so that you might get leftover didn't sell stuff for free or cheap. Check out the bread place when they are closing up. You might get some bread or pies that they didn't sell. Music, singing and dancing going on in the afternoon and get really crowded so I would go there first thing in the morning.

The kids and adults all learned so much about tortoises, and the whole experience was incredibly informative, hands-on, and just so cool. I felt bad for the children getting reprimanded, and I did have to raise my own voice to ask the wife to talk to the children in a nicer tone, and I felt bad for the children as well since they forget things right after they said. That being said, the older fifth graders that went on this tortoise tour rather enjoyed it, but they found a few vocabulary words funny, and later asked us, " what's a drug sniffing dog?" And " how can sex change an animal?" which were both statements spoken to both (younger-TK & Kinders AND older 3rd-5th graders) Group of children. Ughhhhh Since we're in Silicon Valley, verbally speaking to children for 20 minutes about concepts of tortoises or any animal without a visual aid is very cumbersome. My TK and kindergarten children cannot sit still for a five minute digital book let alone sit still for 20 minutes and three of them started to fall asleep as they sat crisscross, applesauce, and nodded their heads off. One of my five-year-olds could not sit still, and he got up a couple of times and the owner reprimanded him and raised his voice saying, "hey you take a seat! " it was rather alarming to my five year-old classroom child so I had to whisper and talk to him off to the side so he didn't start crying. The tortoise feeding is very interesting and they have strict protocols!! The owners are very aware that most parents do not watch their children, but as a educator/teacher, we are constantly supervising our children, so the ratio was 1 to 14, and we would only allow about eight children in the tortoise area with four teachers watching. We rotated through our children since we had a rather large group, but it seemed to bother the owners because not all the children were in the pin at the same time. It seemed a bit chaotic but then again we also had a group of about 35 children in a rather small space. Overall, I do not think we will ever come back to this particular tortoise ranch, but they were rather interesting, and I really do worry about the cleanliness of everything since the tortoises walk, eat and poop, and pee all in the same vicinities of where we were walking. We made sure all the children wiped off their feet at the park nearby, and some of them stepped in tortoise number two, so they were rather disgusted, and their shoes stunk. On a happier note, I'm glad some of the children got to see tortoises granted at least five of my children were terrified of the animals and their hard shells. Lol then again they are four and five years old and everything is new to them. We would've been better off going to the library.Hee

There was no hot food prepared and no explanation as to why or when it would return. That could be just the day I chose, but my bigger problem is that virtually nothing is priced in the entire store! There's stuff out on tables, no price tag anywhere, no nothing. For some things in the cold case there is a piece of paper stuck on the side and if you can match up your item to the paper, you're in luck. But there are things on the shelf that aren't on the paper. My philosophy on this is "If you can't be bothered to price it, I can't be bothered to buy it." I refuse to go find someone to ask a price on every single item I might want to buy. I'll leave instead. When asking the friendly staff member at the register about the lack of hot foods, there was a prepared item there that looked good so I broke my own rule and asked. His accent made me believe it was one price, so I decided to get it, only to find out it was twice what I thought I'd heard! I bought it anyway, a package of four aloo paratha, which was really tasty but much spicier than I had expected. Finally, I pulled out a box of Driscoll's that were mold-free. The price on the shelf was two dollars more than Safeway, and when I checked out they overcharged me a dollar, which I didn't notice until I got home. Oh well. Got a cucumber that was roughly the same price as Safeway's. Wanted cherry tomatoes, but couldn't find any. Got a ripe avocado for the excellent price of .79 cents. Arteaga's sells much more than produce. They have a large meat counter and plenty of dry goods. The store was a bit crowded, but there was no wait when I checked out. They have a to-go counter that serves tacos, burritos, nachos, etc. I didn't have time to try it, but I've heard it's very good.

Service is still 5, but man, the value proposition isn't as high as before. The clam chowder tasted good, creamy and all, but $16 for that is really hard to swallow. The store itself is clean and sells a variety of meat products and imported goods such as from Italy. We came again on Friday evening, at 5pm exact and saw the paella pan laid outside with some amount of paella piled up. The pan felt cold and we were confused if they haven't started cooking or those were the left over. So we went inside to ask and they said the paella was available starting at 5pm, so what's on the pan was cooked. We bought 1 portion, which feeds 2-3 and it came in two 16 oz tubs. For $35, it fed my husband and myself just right. The smoky flavor was on the rice with meat and lots of clams and mussels (but not those fatty mussels that you saw in the Belgium style dish). $35 for dinner of two is not as bad value as the $16 bowl of chowder. So overall, 3.5-4 stars for food and value, 5 stars for service and friendliness.
