We are shopping here more often now. If you follow the ads you can chip away a bit from the higher retail pricing Safeway commands over other chain grocers. Sometimes the deals are surprising. The store was recently renovated, actually it was only a rearranging of items. They now have a dedicated craft beer refer. The selection of craft beers could be improved upon but it is nice to see the effort here. Safeway Crossroads bakery deserves a nod. There is plenty of help on hand and they have a decent selection of pastries and cakes. The best deal in the store is day old chocolate cake slices for $2.50. The icing they make compares well to some of the nicer bakeries on the Monterey Peninsula. The customer demographics is also a positive. It's civilized. read more

Do Not attempt to get groceries at this store after midnight!!! They have no checkers, and the employees that are around, ie produce, look at you and do NOTHING!!! I stood there by the register that had its light on, with a broken foot, for 20 minutes!! I finally pushed my overflowing cart into the little place the checker would be if there had been one, and carefully put my cart in there. I fought the urge to turn it over in that little space, real hard! Not that anyone would have noticed...It still makes me mad, all that carefully picked out foot and all that pain walking around the store for nothing!! I left with NOTHING! I bought a pair of ham & cheese sandwiches at the Carmel Safeway deli. The "sour dough" bread had the tastelessness and lack of texture characteristic of Wonder bread. The cheese was a tasteless cheddar. The ham slices were scanty and dried out. As my companion remarked, " The best part of the sandwich was the mustard. I called customer service to complain. located inside the crossroads shopping center, this safeway is very convenient to downtown carmel and highway 1. before starting another day of hiking, hubby and i stopped by to grab some snacks, sandwiches, and drinks. the layout of the store is just like any other safeway, and on this day, it was pretty crowded since it was memorial day weekend, and everybody was stocking up for their long weekend celebrations. they also have self checkout lines which we utilized for faster checkout. there is a large parking area immediately in front of the store. the deli offers sandwiches at a great deal since they are $5.99 for a regular sandwich (6-in submarine) and $8.99 for a long sandwich (12-in submarine i believe). we chose the chicken artichoke long sandwich to share, which consisted of grilled chicken, artichokes (which happened to be in season this weekend), mozzarella cheese, veggies, and choice of condiments. the employees working at the sandwich bar were friendly and very patient as we gave them our sandwich requests (as i am quite particular). a few hours later, when we sat down to lunch, we discovered these sandwiches were pretty big and quite delicious! solid safeway in carmel that will take care of all of your bbq and hiking needs! read more

Ahh, the freshest of fresh produce! The beer, wine, AND liquor available for sale! The long aisles of clean and organized shelves! What's not to love about this Safeway? We were in town for a few days and decided to stock up on snacks, water and booze for our room to save a few dolla-dolla-bills. We found exactly what we needed (and more!), and got great check-out staff both visits. It's easy to get to, has lots of parking and very clean inside. Texas needs to get on the ball with other states... selling vodka next to the bread is a magical idea. Oh, and I know it's just down the road from wine country and all, but the deals on reds and whites amazed us. We scored a bottle of 2008 La Crema Pinot Noir for $12. We normally have to cough up $23 for a bottle of that shiz. And we almost purchased a bottle of Veuve for $38; now I wish we had. read more

If I could give these people negative stars I would, they are absolutely clueless when it comes to customer service. Nice store, great selection, morons for managers; its their job to teach, train their employees on even basic customer service. Case in point, my last visit asked two stockers where an item is located , first, "Well it could be here, or there, or possibly over there, maybe... Next stocker "I don't know, I've only worked here two months..." Go to their deli, at least four people working there will only occasional look at you, then ignore you. I finally after about 5 minutes of being put on ignore get to meet the guy that's job is to help. I explain - he says, "it not there job..." I said not to even acknowledge a waiting customer. My husband and I went to Safeway in Carmel at the Crossroads and bought some Gatorade, cherries, burritos, and beef jerky after our hike at Point Lobos. We used the self check-out stand. Beatriz was working and covering this area. Everything scanned with the right price with discounts using our phone number, except the burritos. The sale price for the burritos were NOT reflected and discounted for $1.50 each. It rang up at regular price of $2.50. So we told the cashier, Beatriz, that it was on sale, but she refused to honor the sale price. So my husband went back to double check and he took a picture of the sign, came back to the front and showed her and she still will not honor that price, therefore, didn't change the price for us. So we checked out, paid the regular price, and asked to speak to the manager. Keep in mind that Beatriz was the only person covering the self check-out stand area. Then she decided to go double check the sale price for the burritos again. She quickly ran back to the fridge area and was at the wrong area and aisle, but decided to come back and PRETENDED to tell us that she found the burritos and STILL insisted that the burritos were NOT on sale, but at regular price. 1. She pretended to look for the product 2. She went to look again and could NOT find the product because she was at the wrong aisle EVEN when we showed her the pictures. 3. After coming back, she asked my husband where it was, and he went to show her where the product was located. 4. She then refunded us $2.00 and NEVER apologize. Keep in mind, this whole process took about 30-40 "minutes. By this time, I was mad and furious. So I asked "What is the problem, why couldn't you just adjust the price, handle the problem, listen to the customer, and etc.?" I remembered feeling extremely upset with exhaustion because everything was handled VERY POORLY!!! There are many ways that Beatriz could have had handle this problem. She could have handled this problem herself. Oh I'm not done. When we waited for the manager, she came out and asked Beatriz to take care of us instead and went quickly back into the room behind the glass. Maybe she was counting money or something, but who cares!!! The point is that "NOBODY wanted to take care of customers with issues, including the manager herself". They brushed us off again. The manager sent us back to Beatriz. Ultimately, it is the manager's responsibility to take care of customer's issues. Period!!! Many things were wrong with this store and staff, especially the manager. Everything was handled poorly. Only one register was open and about 5 customers were in line to check out. I have never been to another Safeway where the manager was not there to help me. I waited for the manager before, but someone always helped me. Safeway in Carmel at the Crossroads was the first. Both the manager and Beatriz should be fired and removed from the store!!! If you can, DO NOT GO TO SAFEWAY IN CARMEL AT THE CROSSROADS! I also agreed with the other reviewers because they said that "the manager is stupid" and refused to help the customers. However, the store itself seemed very clean. read more

I was reprimanded the checker in the express line that it was a 15 item minimum AFTER I had told her I had 2 separate orders (1 order of 6 items and 1 order of exactly 15 items - not to mention that 6 items were exactly the same and another 4 items, don't the have a quantity key?) I already typed in my club card number, swiped my credit card and had the pen in my hand to sign when she scolded me. So I guess you cant be 1 person with 2 separate orders of more than 15 items?? Would you rather me have been a little old lady who cant type her club card in, waits until she get the total to get our her check book, or hunts for correct change? The kicker is, there was no one in line behind me and since it was 12:58pm, I am assuming it was her break time too. On another occasion, when there were no staff to bag the groceries, I grabbed some milk to put back in the cart to help out, and also scolded that I was not allow to put items in the cart myself, that they must load it. This is another clear sample of how corporate rules and regulations get in the way of customer service. Thank goodness there is a Savemart around the corner. read more

My experience is always good but on many occasions, I visit Richard in the meat and fish department and his professionalism reminds me of the old days when knowledge and customer service made your visit to the market special. I'm accustomed to a much larger Safeway, but that didn't take away from my positive experience at this location. The girl working the deli counter let me try various cold cuts and even suggested I try her favorite cheese, the colby jack, which was really nice. We were planning to have a picnic but didn't come prepared (no knife), the bakery staff cut our baguette for us and boxed it up for us as well, quick and easy. Fast forward to the check out. Given the demographics of Carmel, I feel like there should be an age limit for using the Self - Check Out Stands because the scanners were schooling every elderly person who attempted to use them, either way, we made it through in fairly decent time and had a great picnic! read more

Nicest Safeway I've ever been to. And they gave me a club card w/o having to give out my personal info, thereby letting me save $7 off my purchase. This Safeway is FAN-cay. This Safeway will go out of its way to treat you nice. The customer service is amazing, the store is clean, well designed, and well stocked. You'll find a wide array of vegetarian foods here... and most importantly... a ton of soy ice cream to choose from! Thank you Safeway! I can finally shop somewhere other than Whole Foods! I love this store, I love the way it looks... and I really love the personal attention you get from employees. In every aisle I walked down (with an employee in it) I was greeted with a smile. Okay, I have tried to be patient with my local Safeway since it is the go-to store on my way home. They have nice line staff and they usually have most of the items I am seeking. However in the last few weeks I have had two really upsetting customer experiences checking out, and I need to share that I will be avoiding the store as much as possible for the foreseeable future. A couple of weeks ago I was in the checkout line for 34 minutes. All the 4 open lines were backed up into the grocery aisles. This was, I was told, due to the checkers having to check out all of the folks with their various monopoly game winnings - though it did seem as if there must be other issues since they did not open more lines....After that I stayed away until today, thinking it was a one-time issue and once the game was over they would be back to normal store operations, and they do reliably have some things I like for example arugula in reasonably sized packages. So, today I ventured back with a short list, which I checked off pretty quickly with the exception of the aforementioned arugula which was not in fact available today. Then comes the wait. It was a moderate line, behind about 4 people, none with lots of groceries. In a few minutes I get up to the belt & unload my groceries, one person checking out & one more in front of me. Something spills on the belt while they are bagging the groceries (nobody's fault, stuff happens). We wait patiently while the checker tries to deal with this. Many minutes click by. Then the person behind me starts putting his groceries back into the basket and says 'I'm moving' at which point the checker says 'oh yes, this line is down, you'll need to go to another line.' So, we all load our groceries back into our baskets and proceed back out of the line to the end of the shortest other line, which at this point is up to about 8 people, with the folks who were behind me in line all now in front of me in the new line. Nobody from the store thought to do anything about this. I would have thought perhaps opening another line would have been appropriate. Or a free grocery bag.... Or even just some acknowledgement that there had been anything out of the ordinary...! After another 15 minutes I was once again at the front of the line. The nice checker politely asks how my visit had been.... unwise, that.... I did try to keep in mind that at the checkers likely were on the receiving end of comments from more disgruntled folks than just me, and more likely they had no way to address these issues anyway, so did hold my tongue some. However I did let him know that I don't plan to be seeing him in the near future as I was going to find someplace else to get my groceries - preferably someplace where one could count on spending less than 25 minutes in a checkout line to check out with 16 items. The clerk was polite and professional and said he understood and was sorry for the inconvenience. I have no doubt he was. But besides the inconvenience, which after all is relatively minor, more importantly the whole experience once again did not feel like a thoughtful and respectful way to treat a longtime undemanding regular customer - or anyone, for that matter. Now I don't want to go there, at least for awhile. read more

This is one of my most favorite Safeway on the peninsula the staff at this Safeway unlike others is unmatched I always get greeted by a hi how are you doing and my name. Then for the bad reviews you guys do realize it's still Covid right? I went there today to pick up some groceries and the cashier was Jasmine she was super nice and offered to help me carry the bags to my car. This review is two fold. First and foremost, they have such helpful staff at the starbucks inside the store. There is a gal that was working there this morning, the same that dealt with some rather rude customers during our power outage, and handled them with grace and style that I myself may have been challenged. As she was helping me one of the 'floor managers' , not sure of her name, I thought 'Lisa' walked up to ask about a scanner. She berated this amazing employee about a missing scanner, in front of customers. The employee (I wish I had gotten her name) explained pleasantly and nicely she didn't know where it was, she thought maybe someone had borrowed it. Only to to be told how they are expensive and she will need to figure it out. Really? If you have a piece of equipment that expensive that you yourself have not created a process for keeping it secure, you think it's okay to berate your valued employee in front of customers! I have seen this gal take crap from customers, and now this manager. She always maintains a smile and grace. SHE Should be promoted to manager as a problem solver and people person. I was so disgusted with this managers treatment of this employee. Just awful. read more

The customer service here at safeway was IMPECCABLE. I entered safeway at around 9:47 yesterday night looking for a pump for my spike ball. I was approached by Shayne who asked if i needed any help, and I did need help! After searching through the store with us to find the pump, we had no luck. But Shayne didn't stop there, he offered to take the ball to the compressor in the back to fill it up for us. I'm happy to say that we are now happily sitting on the carmel beach playing spike ball with our fully pumped up spikeball, thanks to shayne at the neighborhood safeway. It took me 5 times to realize that Safeway's prepared fruit is always unripe. Honeydew that will break your teeth, cantaloupe etc... They oddly proudly display a sticker on top that reads: "Prepared Here!" I wouldn't brag if I were them. read more

The Sandwich Deli line... A "Philly Cheese Steak" sandwich is made with grilled skirt steak or flank steak that's cut into smaller strips, mixed with cheese, onions and peppers on a toasted bread roll. That is NOT what you get at the sandwich counter at Safeway..! However, what you will get is a guy behind the counter that will argue "roast beef is steak!"... When you put cheese, onions and peppers on a bread roll and you add slices of roast beef, What is that sandwich called..? (answer- a roast beef sandwich!) read more

Good sirs and madams! I have reviewed the Safeway in other parts of the town, but even though this is a chain it should be reviewed as a separate entity. For each location of a chain is located in different places, managed by different folks and even located in various locals that may foster good and bad mojo. And although this location is a sparkling gem of a Safeway (and I know my Safeway stores oh deviants) it must be built atop the site of a former mental institution which was in turn built atop an ancient burial ground which was also in turn cursed by the gods. That's how bad the mojo is here. I like to zip over the hill and into the mouth of Carmel Valley and points beyond on occasion and this day I had my mind set on groceries. I was admittedly doing some soul searching and a much needed social experiment. You see gentle reader I have long ago determined that hippies are in fact the worst thing that ever happened to this planet. All those dirty hippies are all now all well scrubbed, mind-altered, trust fund babies and the worst of the worst of these subhumans are located here. You see their parents fought a war, built a great country, and handed it to their spoiled kids to hate it and demean it all while living in a 2 million dollar home and driving an 80k automobile. So of course these mindless drones are all self absorbed to the point of physical blindness. I tested my theory today at the encouragement of friends. And it held! Boy did it hold! Brother you ain't seen a self centered, self absorbed, self obsessed individual until you enter Carmel Valley and the town proper. Prepare to be jammed with carts, stood in front of as if you are invisible and of course the dreaded stink eye! I was filling my jugs of water with about two feet between me and the robotic H2O spitter and a good eight to ten feet behind me when one of these grayed out boomers literally walked between me and the machine! I was at a bonfire at Carmel Beach and thought this was the closest place to buy alcohol at the time. I haven't been to this Safeway since they revamped it and now it looks like every other Safeway.
