This review is for the bakery. My mother went in to order a cake and was unhappy with the customer service. The lady who helped her was extremely rude and walked away from her as she was trying to decide on a filling flavor. Did not say "I'll be right back" or "one moment", she just walked away. My mother then finished her order. When we picked up the cake, it looked okay but not the right flavor. We won't be coming back to this location. I have worked as a supervisor in retail for over 15 years, and this is absolutely the worst customer service retail establishment I have ever been to. I shop here regularly on Mondays for an elderly man in which I take care of. If it were not for this elderly gentleman needing specific items from this store , I would never shop here again. All of the employees seem unhappy on a regular basis, lazy, inefficient, and just downright like they hate their job. I always use the self-checkout, and seem to even get bad service from the one employee that man's the four self-checkouts. I find it very sad that I actually feel compelled to leave this review. I have ordered delivery the day before and scheduled delivery before 2pm and it is great. Anything after that is ridiculous there is no phone call or email or text or anything to say that you will not be receiving the order that you are anticipating. This rating is for the deli. I have gone for lunch here on multiple locations and each time I go home DISAPPOINTED. It took them 30 minutes to make my sandwich with ONE person ahead of me. I wanted the turkey bacon avocado sandwich which clearly states with ranch on the menu. The worker helping me said they don't offer ranch anymore so I accepted mayo. Wheh she was building my sandwich I told her not to forget the avocado and she said they didn't have it anymore along with the other popular items like onion lettuce. Every morning Monday through friday there is a lomg line at the exprees line between 6 and 7 am. This is a great store. I've been shopping here for years. The only reason its not at five stars is because the people who shop here are usually fairly rude. They stand in the center of the aisles and seem to have almost zero knowledge of basic grocery store etiquette. This is my favorite Safeway in the Monterey Peninsula. (THIS IS A MORNING REVIEW): It is fairly new compared to others in the area. Most of the workers there are nice. It is on my way to work and on Fridays I bring donuts fort the office, the cost is cheap and delicious. I also like that there are sandwiches there at a discount like two hoagies for five dollars or is it six, anyways still cheap; also a starbucks is in the store with warm sandwiches. Terrible place. They are grossly understaffed so they never answer their phone. If you leave a message, forget getting a call back. They constantly make promises that they don't (can't) keep. I have had occasions where I have had to go back 2 or 3 times on subsequent days before they have filled my prescription. Forget getting same-day service from them. I don't know how Safeway corporate is managing their staffing levels, but we had the worst experience at this Safeway in Monterey - seemingly as a result of staff shortages. 1. Nobody is available to answer phones . It took repeated attempts over an hour + of my time to get a live body to place an order for flowers and balloons. 2. Then I had a repeat of the horrible experience when I called to confirm the order. 3. When we arrived to pick up the order first we had to wait for 10+ minutes and then they had the balling but no flowers ! And the trainee they left alone at the desk was not prepped for the situation. She couldn't find any paperwork or information at all. 4. When we asked for a manager it took 25 minutes for someone else to come over to help - she wasn't a manager and couldn't help at all so a complete waste is time . 5. Took another 25 minutes of asking and waiting for the manager -- and literally going over to her at the register in front of customers - to finally get her attention. 6. She had no clue and couldn't help get information about the order . 7. After an hour from our initial arrival someone in the know came back and let us know that the flowers were in the back and needed to be put into arrangements. She was awesome and did it all in about 30 minutes.... Seriously , should have been easy in and out. It might be a nice, large Safeway location, but this experience was ridiculously painful. this safeway is awesome! it uses the floor space infinitely better than the ralphs the building used to house. they've got: -- a pretty decent produce section (with a few local options here and there) -- a large i'm-too-lazy-to-cook area (complete with people dressed as sushi chefs behind the rather large sushi bar) -- a L-A-R-G-E selection of wines and cheeses and MEATS -- fancy ass cookware (important for 3am i-want-to-make creme brulee urges, if the store is open 24 hours as i suspect) -- the normal fare the parking lot is well lit (it's down the street from the "sketchy" part of seaside) and the staff is friendly enough. the most interesting of the gimmicky things includes a nut area, where you can churn your own nut butter, which is probably not of interest to those who are allergic to nuts. also, the alcohol section has mixers and red party cups right next to the hard stuff! no more splitting up the party to get all of the essentials! i feel dirty for giving safeway five stars. it's a chain, and one that doesn't treat their employees well at that. it's essentially a super wal-mart of grocery stores with more class. that being said, i have to give it credit for adding a lot of value to the monterey peninsula, which is more than i can say for the target they're opening that's less than 5 miles from the one in sand city. monterey lacked a big grocery store (the existing chain grocery stores in the area are pathetic-ly small and lack selection... the mom and pops are cool, but they're not practical for getting the essentials). freshly made cashew nut butter, anyone? read more

Yesterday I tried the Turkey Pesto Avocado sandwich which was very tasty for a supermarket sandwich. The ingredients tasted fresh and the staff was very helpful when I needed to place my order. I enjoy how Safeway has a sandwich reward program where you get a free sandwich after 10 buys. read more

Okay, everyone's talked about how huge and great this Safeway is. So yeah. Ditto. But I haven't seen anything about the catering. I ordered a Petite Croissant tray in the large size. I called two days before and made sure to tell them that I didn't want ham included in the sandwiches... ONLY ROAST BEEF AND TURKEY. I even went in at like, 6:30AM to double check my order. Everything was all set. I went in around 10:15 and picked up the tray. It was ready to go. We got to the house and finished getting everything ready for my friend's bridal shower. And that's when they noticed the ham sammies in there. I was pissed. It was written RIGHT THERE ON THE ORDER. Apparently, they don't know how to read. Or they just hate to follow directions. After the shower I stormed back in there (I was already in a bad mood, anyway) and told them that they messed up. The Deli Manager was pretty calm, although, I thought I sensed a little bit of an attitude from her. (It might've just been me getting all defensive because I was in a crappy mood.) But she did tell us that she'd give us 50% back on the purchase of the tray (That's $25 back on a $50 tray.) That was fine. I was feeling better. And then she got HER manager and they gave us back $30 instead of $25! Then I was appeased. hehe. They didn't give me a hard time or ask me for the remainder of the sandwiches or anything. They were really cool about it. Thank God. I would've ripped them a new one, otherwise. A couple of other things. 1. The produce guys were super-friendly. I get the feeling I was getting hit on, just a little bit. Which kind of worked to my advantage since I have NO idea how to pick out a cantaloupe. hehe. 2. The Starbucks is really convenient. Also, the restrooms are pretty clean. Then again, it *WAS* 6:30AM and the cleaning guys JUST left. 3. The produce was really nice and fresh. 4. They had EVERYTHING I was looking for. And where they put all of their products was really intuitive so it didn't take me an hour and a half to find everything on my list. 5. The guy at the checkout was very helpful and friendly. I've got no beef with the employees here. 6. There's a food court type thing where you can get a quick fix of Chinese food. And some other stuff. Which was perfect because I was TOTALLY craving fried race. And it was surprisingly good. Or I was just super hungry. Either way, it hit the spot. Okay. I think that's it. My only advice is that if you're gonna order something from catering, you should triple check your order if you've got any special requests because apparently, double checking just isn't enough. Oh, I didn't get a chance to taste any of the croissant sandwiches, but EVERYONE said they were delicious. I did notice that they put in mayo and mustard in the sandwiches already. This store is not welcoming to families. If you have children do not shop here. The workers will torture you. They will not honor your gift cards and make you wait a very long time while your ice cream melts and your baby cries. They are deceitful con artists who offer coupons but do not redeem them. If you try to use a coupon or a gift card they will kick you out of the long line you waited in to put you in another long line to wait some more while your baby cries. Then when you start to cry they will ignore you. The employees are mean, rude, dishonest and cruel. The price cuts are not worth the abuse. Plus the parking lot always has a handful of hostile, dirty vagrants who loiter and make parking and loading your car very unsafe and scary. Great grocery store: huge selection, awesome produce (they even carry lots of organic). Deli is good, Chinese food smells fantastic but taste is a little less than standard (maybe cuz we ate there at the end of the day?). Beer selection is impressive. They have a Starbucks AND a Jamba Juice!!!!!! Staff is super friendly. This place is why I love America (aka the west coast)! We come here all the time if I don't feel like cooking, and grab something from the nice sushi deli or fresh baked pastries and pasta salads. I recommend this over trader joes as far as selection. I highly recommend this place over whole foods if you want to purchase without selling an arm and a leg. read more

I am a huge fan of Safeway's Deli and I have been to many different locations all over Norcal. However on my last visit to this location, the customer service miserably failed to meet the standard of the many Safeway's I have been to. Specifically, one of the ladies would not allow me to pick my bread and switch out my meat for Egg whites in my sandwich (I am on a very particular diet). Even after being told I am willing to pay the additional cost she continued to deny my request. She then had a conversation with her manager and she agreed to finish making the sandwich. She then sent me off with, "I did it for you this time, but next time we won't." In the end, I received what I wanted but the extra arguing was an inconvenience to me and the line behind me. This was a simple task that could not be completed. Very disappointing. read more

Really dislike this store! Except for two really nice lady cashiers, the rest of the personnel display rude and snarling customer service. Produce manager is condescending and nasty when asked a question. One self-checkout woman was extremely nasty in the past, but I haven't seen her much lately, thank goodness. Other clerks, cashiers, personnel at large, etc., usually give an offhand, unhelpful or abrupt response when asked a question. Today was the absolute limit: The butcher is always very rude and answers my questions with a sneer and rude tone of voice. I certainly expected nothing else this time, but I had to ask about a special that I couldn't find. I asked where it was, and he waved his hand and said vaguely, "Over there." I said I had looked there and didn't see it. I described what I wanted, and he said (without looking for it), "We don't have it, it didn't come in." He added that he was busy stocking some things in the case. I had had enough of his rudeness, so I answered him none-too-politely and added that he was never helpful to me. I think my sharp tone brought him up short, because he then went around to look in the case. When he didn't see the item, he again said they didn't get it. There was no flyer anywhere to be had in the store, so I couln't look up the item to see if I was searching for the right size. Later, at home, I saw that what I had wanted was indeed in the case; it was offered in a larger size than I had thought. About that I would like to say that there was no signage on the "special" item, so I had no way of knowing that what I wanted was actually in the case after all. So maybe Safeway at this location should 1) make sure the personnel in the department that runs a special knows what they are, and 2) ensure that clear and informative signage is on the special item! I never shop at this store unless they have something I absolutely have to have. I probably won't go back for the special item I had wanted; I'll just wait until I can get it at another store where I am treated with more respect and courtesy. read more

Today I went to Safeway located on Canyon Del Rey in Monterey CA. As I have done many times before, I came to the Safeway Deli and ordered a Turkey sandwich. I asked the Asian Lady if she could please cut my Turkey fresh? To which she replied,"this pre cut turkey is fresh. I insisted that she cut my turkey, and she asked me " don't you trust us?" I replied, "yes, I trust you, after all you are making my food. As she and I began to walk towards the uncut lunch meats, I said "hello" to another Safeway worker who was standing behind the Deli bar. Instead of speaking, he doesn't speak, he simply "nods" and looks at me. When the Lady and I arrive at the uncut meat section , I request roasted turkey and roast beef. She then told me that the additional meat would be extra, to which I replied "ok, no problem". She took the meat to the meat cutter. The meat cutter was filthy with dried meat and residue from the fat in previously cut meats. Also, right next to the cutter was a small container with pieces of cut meat in it. I said to her, "excuse me, before you cut that meat can you please clean that machine?" She picks up a dry paper towel and begins to wipe the slicer down. I requested that she please wash the cutter. To which she replied, "I just cut meat on this machine." I asked again , "can you please wash down the machine?" At that point the other Deli guy walked towards us, and she tried to explain to him that she didn't need to wash the machine down because ......bla bla bla. At that point I told her to forget it and walked away. On my out of the store, I located and told Robert the store manager what had just occurred. To be fair, I have usually had great experiences with this Deli department. But after this, my confidence is shaken in Safeway and I am unlikely to return. read more

I placed an order at the bakery early Friday morning for my sons first birthday which was happening Sunday mid afternoon. I received a call Sunday morning and was left with a message notifying me that they did not have the Mickey Mouse design for the cake. Needless to say I had to go to Safeway early morning just to pick a different design that wasn't going to match the rest of my sons party theme so now I have two different themes. I didn't receive an apology for the inconvenience on their part. I did ask for a discount and what the lady KAREN told me was different from the price that I would have paid for. Karen is very rude and doesn't seem to know much and I don't understand why they would have someone whom lacks the job. On the brighter note the sweet girl at checkout seemed to know I was upset and asked I told her what happened she called the manager and my cake was given to me for free. I went shopping this morning during this covid-19 pandemic and an employee stopped me and says, "ma'am, I'm gonna need you to follow the arrows of the store." I didn't notice all the arrows all over the ground in every isle til she pointed it out. So, later while I was checking out in line she was the bagger and said, "there's a trash can behind you to throw away your hand wipe." Did she really think I was one of those dirty people who leaves trash in their cart? Was she judging me differently because I looked asian? I know there's a lot of discrimination going on with thinking asians started the coronavirus. Did she look at me as a person she can step on? I was going to throw the hand wipe away once I exited the store. She didn't greet me nor did she thank me for shopping in the store and came off as extremely rude. Later, I vented to another cashier that her coworker was mean and I felt harrassed. She asked which coworker it was. I described her as an older African American lady. The cashier told me to not pay attention to her and ignore it because she even treats the employees that way and she has been working with her for 12 years. So, I left and felt so bothered. I am a very quiet person who hardly complains about anything. But, I ended up calling the store to complain to the manager and he said he thinks he knows who I am talking about already and will talk to her. I asked him if he could please talk to her about how to treat customers. I've never felt mistreated before. All the other staff are over the top welcoming and friendly. What a way to ruin a customer's day and lose a loyal customer. read more
