I ordered groceries to be delivered. I received what I ordered, but on one item got no substitute as I'd asked for. Kind of annoying but no hugie. However - I was left a full bag full of someone else's groceries. At first I left it on the porch, but eventually TRIED to contact Safeway and report it. The website makes it damn near impossible and the only contact you're given is AI. When they transfer you to a human, it's not in the US. Biiiig help. Yes, I know I'll get to keep the food, and I got *my* order, but what about the person who is missing an entire bag of multiple items? Safeway doesn't seem to care about their experience at all, or the experience of their regular customers. Yes, DoorDash delivers the groceries - but Safeway CHOOSES to use DD drivers. Be aware that if you order grocery delivery from here, there's no accountability from Safeway and no way to report it to DD, you're just SOOL. I might have to switch to Walmart delivery. Also, every.single.bag had broken/ripped/useless handles because the contents were too heavt for the bags. Everything had to be carried into the house from the bottom! read more

Safeway is the worst! Everything is expensive (and yes I know prices are up everywhere), but if your prices are higher give better customer service! I only go here cuz it's convenient to my apartment but I need to not be so lazy and drive the 10 min to lucky. Or even grocery outlet. Today I was there and after spending a bunch of money went to ask for a roll of quarters at customer service. Of course no one was there. But they again I actually appreciate the people who keep me in a job. Then she tells me they no longer give quarters out cuz it "shorts their bank". Ugh! I just waited 12 minutes and this happens. Tell your employees that you no longer offer quarters if this is the case. Last time I was there myself and this little old lady literally almost got mowed down by a thief running out the door with his hands full of items he didn't pay for. An employee was standing there sweeping and said "hey!" to the thief who kept on running. I get that they don't chase the bad guys, and I understand why but two employees saw this happen and didn't even ask the 85 year old lady if she was ok! She was scared but ok. Why does this store smell like sewage when you walk in? I dont know, but it does. The store layout is not intuitive so you waste a lot of time looking for what you need. The staff is either rude, annoying, or they act drugged out - take your pick depending on your interaction. I watched two people on the same trip get chewed out by staff. The store was NOT busy and one gentleman was chewed out for having "too many items" enter into the express lane (did I mention the store was pretty dead, Sunday fall afternoon=football), the Second Gentleman was chewed out for wanting to use self check out for more than 15 items. The Safeway I frequent in my own community does not care how many items you have in your cart, which I prefer. This morning at 8 am the self checkout was closed and they had one register open with at least a dozen people in line. Checker seemed oblivious, moving slow and not calling for backup. So I am currently homeless due to a car accident that was not my fault. Long story short I lost my place and am homeless sleeping outside. I was sleeping right by Safeway one night trying to stay warm..it was pretty cold so I decided to use the restroom to put on more clothes to stay warm. I was in there pretty late, not sure what time it was but the employees came in and told me that they were closing. 2 guys oddly enough...and they didnt just ask me to leave..they sort of acted like they were the police or something and they were like "hurding" me with there arms out of of the store like I was cattle or something...??? Like I was going to make a run for it or something??? IDK??? It was honestly bizarre! Anyways after I was escorted out about a half hour later I realized that my phone was missing!!! I had just gotten that phone sadly after the last one was stolen. I only had it for about 5 days. Honestly I was so mortified and kind of freaked out by the force these guys had that I didn't want to go back and ask them if I could go back in to see if my phone was there so I asked my male friend if he would please go for me. He returned and said that it wasn't there but that's where I had it last. I decided to go talk to someone about it and check the restroom myself when the store reopened. At about 7 or 8am I went back in to the bathroom and did NOT see it there...on my way out i was going to talk to the manager or customer service desk. I decided to get ready because I had an interview for a job and I didn't want to look like I slept outside. I was brushing my teeth, washing my face, putting on makeup and doing my hair quickly when i had someone who said that they worked there and say that her manager told her to tell me that I had to leave. I said why? I made sure to be nice to every customer that came in..I wished them a happy day and told them to enjoy the sunshine outside because it was a really nice day. Every customer I spoke to was really nice honestly.. So I'm not sure what I did. I then asked if I could speak to the manager about the issue because I was really confused why I had to leave. I then had some lady who was the manager there, she was a dark skinned lady, come through the door and start yelling at me. Her voice was completely raised and she was telling me that I needed to leave now and that she had a customer come up and ask what my situation was, if I was homeless or not? I said did she want me to leave..?? Because it didn't sound like it? She was quite aggressive honestly and I was shocked! I explained what I was doing, that I was homeless trying to get a job so I was trying to get ready! I had no where else to get ready and that I was trying to hurry as fast as I possibly could. She then said I could go to the library and apply for a job for Safeway that she was doing interviews that Wednesday and I said oh ok thank you, i will! I honestly was so shocked that I was being kicked out but offered a job. I was walking out and was going to ask about my phone because she was at customer service but I them had security come up to me and say that I was asked to leave.. That I am not allowed there ever again and if he sees me there that he would call the police. I really don't know what I did I immediately started crying and walked out of the store completely embarrassed and distraught with the interaction I had with the so called "leaders" that were in charge of the establishment. I'm appalled at the leadership that the manager had, showing her fellow employees (people that looked up to her because she was the manager) basically how to treat a customer. She should lead by example and never yell at any customers and definitely not show other employees that behavior like it's ok to treat someone like that. I honestly have been a manager at a few different places and I would have never acted like that!!! Honestly I think she should be fired for her Actions and I would have done a way better job if you ask me. Hopefully she gets on the right medication and truly works on her customer service skills because that really was not how I wanted to start my day!!! read more

I am regrettably leaving 1 star due to one of the worst experiences at a Safeway I have ever had. Safeway does NOT sell kombucha. I spent a lot of time looking but there was only juice. When I decided to get a juice instead, I thought it would be the next best thing, but this my worst mistake. "Evolution Fresh Organic Green Devotion" is one of the GROSSEST things I have ever tasted in my life. As soon as I took a sip I deeply regretted my purchase, I cannot hold a straight face when I drink this. My friend tried it and said "It tastes like sour piss". I spent over $5 on this drink (that was mostly water) and it was so bad I am afraid to even return to this Safeway location. Besides the juice issue, none of the ready made meals at the front of the store were vegan. None of the microwaveable soups were vegan either... I was looking for some microwaveable bean burritos but I couldn't find any that were dairy free. As a traveler I was unable to cook and ended up skipping dinner because there was nothing I could buy that wasn't ready made + vegan. Please carry more plant based options . The worst grocery store anywhere I have lived. As mentioned by so many, the manager understaffs the check-out lines so that one spends more time in-line than shopping. In the morning the produce area has puddles everywhere. To top it off, most carts need repairs. They are hard to push because of worn or misaligned wheels and noisy. The staff is helpful but clearly overworked. The manager is clearly reducing costs (fewer checkers) to maximize profit at the customer's expense and corporate doesn't care. This is a pretty good Safeway in terms of size and the staff are pretty friendly, however it definitely has some issues. Despite being relatively huge for a Safeway store, the lack of variety when it comes to products is very noticeable. They also don't tend to have some seasonal items you would expect such as matzoh. I ordered for a delivery in the morning, and it was supposed to be delivered between 5 and 9 PM. They had many hours to prepare. Around 9PM I was told that my delivery was delayed. I stayed awake until midnight to see if they would deliver it. Turns out they delivered it at five in the morning the next day, so like groceries were sitting outside my door for hours. This is a ridiculously ghetto and dysfunctional Safeway for such a relatively small city. Absolutely terrible customer service and incompetent staff with the exception of a handful of young clerks and shelf stockers. Some of these clerks will just flat out refuse to bag your items and clearly despise you for even being in the store. Most employees have a completely passive aggressive attitude towards customers asking simple questions. Just about every time I go to check out there is a massive line and no help. I always see this one clerk with no teeth flat out mean mug several customers checking out with him being completely rude to the elderly, not even making an attempt to be efficient, quick, or friendly. Some times Ill be shopping here and the employees are just yelling at each other from across the store like there in the hood saying "ayo whats good, damn son, aww shit I thought you were off". Having long conversations from across the store just yelling in front of perplexed customers trying to shop. This old black guy that works there just hound dogs every attractive woman who walks by while he's working, it's honestly hilarious. Just about every shopping cart is on its last leg and you can hear about 4 or 5 of these carts clanking around the store at any given time, which is probably why the staff here seems regularly miserable. This store has 1competent elderly women with bad hearing who works in the deli where the avg wait time for hot food is about 10 mins during lunchtime and they have this Dave brubeck jazz song that plays in the area on a loop 24/7 it's enough to drive you insane for just a few mins. Some of there shelves will be empty for days for common household items and some of the most essential vegetables will be completely empty and good lick trying to find a bag for your vegetables. The store is plagued with hobos smoking weed and crack right out front on the lunch tables or milling about through the store stinking up the place. Trying to call this store is a NIGHTMARE. I ordered a delivery last night, it didn't come. I tried to call the store. Spent 10 mins on hold, sent to the Floral dept, and one other person before getting to someone to reschedule the delivery. It's now the new time and it's not here. I try to call again. This Safeway never has enough staff at their deli counter, sandwich station, etc. between 12:00-2:30. I have never been able to run in and get a sandwich or get deli service. Today I walked in and 4 people were standing there at the counter. One elderly lady was working and I asked her is anyone working with you and she said no she was alone. Poor thing. I asked a lady with children is anyone helping you? The lady with children said no, they havent even acknowledged me. This is a wonderful grocery store, with fabulous staff. The first and last pages of the weekly flyer have the best deals, plus $5 Fridays. Of course, I have the I-phone app and always preview to make lists. Now, you need to pre-check for any discount offers. I learned in a college marketing course: the store brand products have the same ingredients, but usually cost less; the top and bottom shelves cost less rent for products, so usually less expensive; eye level products cost more and those appealing to ego ( supremacy brands). I haver shopped in the store for 2 years. I came from managing grocery stores for last 20 years before I retired. I ran stores much like Whole Foods but with a wider variety of conventional and natural foods. I try too use Safeway on Del Rey Oaks since it is near me. The produce department in this store is the worst I have ever experienced. The meat department usually has no-one at the counter and when they do it is not a fun experience. I feel like I am bothering them. The Deli side is so short associates Guests stand forever to be served. I go to Whole Foods for all my Produce now because when they open they are ready for business. They have checked all their products and the products are all ready for sale. The only reason I still need to go Safeway regrettably is I need some conventional items. If it is on sale they probably will be out fort sure in meat department. The Associates in some cases get to where whatever they want to work it seems as well. There is no uniform structure held. I know they are union but that doesn't mean they should not hold there associates accountable to some kind of dress standard. Today, May 15 around 1pm at the self checkout someone named Jenevie basically saved the day. I couldn't get the self checkout machine to work properly and this person casually saved the day by fixing the machine and effortlessly changed my mind about Safeway in less than a min. Safeway, ya did good when you hired that person. They were very considerate, kind and friendly all while still being professional. My only suggestion is that management should maybe put that person in charge of training people. I'll be back real soon and probably feel good about shopping there the next time. I used to love this Safeway, the regular staff have and continue to be great. But poor management just don't seem to care anymore as the stocking of product seems horrible , the self checkout area is using the original 1990s machines that never work without at least one intervention, and amazingly there are no shopping carts at the doors or inside anywhere, yes you need to venture out into the unsafe parking lot to find a cart way away from the store and good luck getting one with all 4 wheels.
