On 11/22/2025, I visited this location as a long-time Fremont resident and frequent customer. I was assisted by a cashier named Christopher, who refused to accept my valid Mexican passport as identification for an alcohol purchase. He stated that it was "the law" that a Mexican passport could not be used as ID. I have shopped at this store for years and have never encountered any issues using this form of identification. When Christopher saw that my ID was a Mexican passport, his reaction appeared noticeably negative, which made me feel that his refusal may have been racially motivated. I chose not to escalate the situation at the register and asked him to remove the items. I then requested to speak with the manager on duty, an older Asian woman. I asked whether rejecting a Mexican passport was store policy. She clearly confirmed that a Mexican passport is an international form of identification and is valid. When I explained that I felt the cashier's behavior was discriminatory, she appeared to acknowledge my concern. She completed my transaction, and I reminded Christopher of the correct policy. His demeanor throughout the interaction remained rude and disrespectful. I have never experienced racism before, and this incident was unacceptable. I expect employees to know store policies and to treat customers respectfully. I plan to contact the store manager and corporate regarding this matter. Christopher also refused to provide Dave Hines' email, claiming he was not allowed to give it out. As a manager myself, I find this behavior unprofessional and unethical. Christopher demonstrated discriminatory behavior and poor customer service, and I hope appropriate action is taken.

Wash your produce people. A Safeway employee was putting her handheld devices on all kinds of fruits and vegetables. When I informed the store employees they looked at me like I was weird for thinking this was not sanitary.

Home delivery service is terrible! There are often missed items & I have NEVER receive an order on time for same day delivery. Today I had an order due between 3-4p. Not delivered. I've contacted customer service several times & was told the store would contact me. Hasn't happened. I've talked to managers there in the past but nothing changes. And they won't let me change to a different store for delivery. Lousy service!

This Safeway is much better than the one closer to where I live. The isles are always well stocked and clean. You can tell the employees care about their place of work. They have an abundance of fresh produce and some nice choices in the meat department. The employees are very helpful and business oriented unlike other stores.

a birthday cake in a box

Ordered a tres leches cake a day in advance for my brother-in-law's birthday and the whole process was awful. When we went to pick up the cake, the lady at the bakery said "give me 20 mins to finish the cake". She went to the back and slapped on some frosting and hideous decorations and handed the cake to us for free. I've never seen an uglier cake in my life. Plastic balloons, random snowflakes, ugly dome shaped cake? I thought this has to be a gag, the lady can't be serious. But she was. This cake was for our 36 year old brother-in-law and it looked like a clown cake. This cake was not only so ugly, but also tasted disgusting. Nothing about it was tres leches. The cake was crumbling and flavorless and the frosting was so nasty. My sister-in-law accepted the free cake, assuming it might taste better than it looks, but we were wrong! We won't be ordering cakes from this Safeway ever again.

Smoked Turkey Sandwich from the deli

I tried ordering DoorDash from the deli for lunch. There was something wrong with their system so after an hour of uncertainty, the Dasher arrived to the store to learn that they cannot take the order. Alas, the order was cancelled. After work I happened to be in the area, so I swing by to pick up my smoked turkey sandwich myself. Luckily, it wasn't as busy as anticipated. The older lady in the deli was very kind and patient preparing my sandwich. She will personalize the way you like eg if you want the spread on both sides, if you want the sandwich cut in half, etc. It was delicious!

It's a very popular plaza with lots of restaurants and businesses, so parking can get pretty hectic. We scheduled our pickup for 3pm and learned that if you pick up at 3 or after, you have to go to the cashier because the sushi prep employees are already gone. Getting them from the cashier was a little more complicated. Next time, we'll schedule an earlier pickup. if you have some flexibility on what you buy and don't want to pre-order, you can show up around 4 or 5pm, when sushi items get discounted by 20%.

Raley's, a shrinking brand here in this part of the bay, still holds a large footprint in downtown Fremont. Benefiting from the big parking lot shared by many eateries, cafes, and specialty stores and entertainment, the grocery chain welcomes many to its storefront and keeps them coming back with their weekly deals. Some of the parking spots are tight but there are spaces all around the shopping center if you're willing to walk. But once you're settled, head on inside and be prepared to shop! Be sure to join their free membership to maximize savings (aside from their weekly deals, they have some specials on Mondays and during holidays). A jarring sight, however, is the security officer standing watch at the front entrance which makes you wonder if their presence is due to a necessity or simply a security protocol for deterring that necessity. From all the visits I've made, the security personnel are just as friendly as the store's staff who are frequently traversing through sections to restock, check inventory, and help customers. As you continue walking in, you'll pass the dining space and prepared food section where you'll find fried foods, stirfrys and soups sitting in warmers. Nearby food stations also host a good collection of more freshly prepared foods and a deli for sandwiches. The prices can be decent with their added discounts at times, but I've yet to be hungry enough to try. The biggest impression for me at this store is their dedicated produce section. Organics as well as fruits and vegetables of the season are in full display, vibrant in color and heaped in abundance. Some of their more perishable produce may be found in the chilled cases on the side. In addition, I'm a big fan of their seafood and meats section as the staff behind the counter are friendly and helpful. The selection can be minimal during peak times but the quality seems to be pretty good for the value. Their bread, cereal, and coffee sections are also well stocked and we've also been able to find some solid pumpernickel bread as well as Dutch crunch French bread. After perusing the store and piling your cart, you'll head to the registers, however in all my visits so far, we have been able to use the self checkout which, for the most part, has been a good experience. The staff float around and are helpful in the event that an item needs to be cancelled or a SKU needs to be looked up. A few areas of improvement would include their water fountains by the bathrooms which haven't worked in our visits and general bathroom upkeep. Overall, Raley's does a great job welcoming folks near and far to their well stocked store, serving fresh and on-sale items. The store is organized and frequently refreshed with new stock by their band of employees roaming the aisles with smiles. You'll also find that patrons here are quite friendly - almost a neighborly feel to it. If you're in the area and need a quick bite or a pantry run, Raley's has what you need and for a good price, too!
