UGH. I'm so glad I'm not crazy and I know what I'm talking about. (Some reviews here share the same sentiments as mine) This place caught me on a baddddddd day, so they get ONE STAR. I get stuck in 880 traffic coming from work and I go straight to a class right after my journey of hell. Instead of choosing some kind of fast food for nourishment I walk into Safeway to grab a sandwich, or I would've hoped so. I stood in front of the sandwhich deli counter for a couple of minutes while two employees were helping a few customers out. One got rung up right in front of me and then the employee just left to walk to the back, the other was still helping someone else out. When I saw him turn without even awknowledging me and continue walking I said to myself: "OHH FUCK THIS. I'M LEAVING." FYI: DON'T IGNORE ME WHEN I NEED FOOD. You don't want to get hurt. read more

I have shopped here too often because I am sometimes to lazy to bother going somewhere else. Their bakery department is THE WORST. Many times there are no items to choose from. Literally NO items. No focaccia, no french bread, no cakes, etc. Their specialty items are so picked over. It is like they simply don't bake enough. I have shopped at the Safeway in both Newark and on Mission in Warm Springs and have never known either one to be lacking in specialty baked goods. Another thing about Safeway in general is the poor quality of their produce. It is low grade. I often find wilted, overly ripe, rotten, and sometimes flat out moldy items. This is unacceptable in any grocery store. I have noticed that often their highest priced produce (organic) is often the worst. The last negative about this Safeway is their lack of shopping basket corrals in the parking lot. In the past several months they have removed all but a couple of ones closest to the store. That means you should NEVER park near anything with a curb. Otherwise you will have a cart resting on your car because, face it, people are simply too lazy to walk their cart to a corral. If it were not for their proximity to Trader Joe's, I would never shop at this particular Safeway at all. While I think they are more expensive, Safeway has lost our business to Raley's. read more

There's this one guy in the meat department (I know his name, but I wont post it) Who was so very rude to me and some other customers while we were buying meat a few days before Christmas. He made me so mad that I left the store, and went the the Safeway in Newark, where I received excellent customer service. And the people in the Service deli are so cranky! I actually witnessed an argument between two of them. If you don't like the people you work with, you really shouldn't let it show in front of the customers. read more

This store has been steadily going downhill since my wife and I moved to this area 4 years ago. In general, I've been a fan of Safeway for the 45+ years I've been doing my own grocery shopping but this place gives them a black eye. We use the online buying program fairly regularly, but our orders are generated out of this store and the mistakes are constant. On our most recent order, we spent an hour auditing the final bill against the order we placed. Between missed coupons, missed club card savings, and mis-pulled items, we found in $18.00 in mistakes we were overcharged for. Did they refund us? Yes they did, but only with close to 2 hours of our time invested in getting to that point. Back in late August, they screwed up so badly on a large order that it took three days to get it all ironed out. If you physically go into the store, it's worse yet. They are notorious for understaffing on checkers, and it's not at all uncommon to wait in line for 30 minutes. I've personally witnessed numerous occasions where customers (including myself) were so frustrated that they were ready to abandon their carts in line and walk out. I've seen lines 20 people deep, extending up into the isles to the point that shoppers can't get to the items they need because people are waiting in long lines. We're not talking peak hours the day before Christmas here, either. I'm talking about your normal shopping days. I've tried calling and speaking with a manager, but that's a giant expercise in futility. Three messages left over the past year have resulted in virtually zero follow up from a manager. The only positive I can offer is that the customer service personnel at Safeway delivery support are excellent... really helpful even in bad situations. Bottom line, we're done with this store, and possibly with Safeway in general. We'll be exploring our options going forward. read more

Having become more accustomed to the suburban life (hopefully not for too much longer!), I see why this Safeway has some problems. It is still gigantic and has an amazing variety of food, but I am still underwhelmed by their produce (although the TJs produce next door has typically kicked the bucket in about three days). Service is not fabulous here either. The employees seem stressed out (maybe they need to hire more people?) and as a result, can sometimes be a little short tempered. I use to come to this Safeway every other day since they have everything there. Some of their items are pretty pricey but once in awhile, you can find a great deal. I agree with some of the previous reviews with customer service. There are good employees and there are they lazy. With work, I use to order 1 cake and 1-2 sandwich platters a month. I went in the store today and had a coupon for free yogurt that I downloaded from Facebook. When I tried to use it, one of the cashiers say that Safeway Corporate has a rule that they can not use a printable coupon that makes an item free. She refused to take it while other Safeway's and other stores take them all the time. After this incident, I don't think I will be shopping here anymore. Why come here to pay more for items and coupons are not to be used? read more

Poor customer service! While I was at the register, the cashier "Pamela" was openly rude to her fellow co-worker (the bagger). It was very uncomfortable to hear an employee criticize a fellow employee. I guess insecure people need everything they can to validate themselves. Hopefully the management arranges some type of professional training & counseling for Pamela. read more

A fine Safeway with most all of the advertised specials in stock. Today we stocked up on Hatch chili peppers which are in season, delicious, and healthy. I would be happier if some of the aisles were a little wider or if all the customers would share two lanes in those aisles. Also, one of the cashiers once asked me how she was going to move in and out from her cash register. The answer is frankly it isn't easy for anyone. At least this store does have a self-checkout which works well except for the feisty unexpected item in bagging area when you least deserve it. I am sending a photo of an exquisite art mosaic, showing some wholesome food, on the front of the store where I confess I seldom notice it. After posting this photo, I noticed that long ago Mystery M. had posted a different view of the same art mosaic. I didn't even know he had done so, but keep in mind that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. They do have some ways to get a pull through parking space so long as you are willing to get good exercise walking a little further into the store. You have to remember to have the Safeway club card or else almost everything ends up somewhat higher. Now that the Bernal Ave. Safeway has EV chargers and a gas station, I intend to learn more about their gasoline discount program. Before I would have needed to go to Eastern Livermore as far as I know. On my visit this morning 9/11/2015 I learned something more about the gasoline discount program. The only way I could readily get the fine print was by photographing the fine print by a display that sought to get me to buy some gift cards. You would need a ph.d. in math to explain all the ins and outs of the numbers. In essence, as I see it if you spend on one Safeway Club Card at least $300 not counting items such as sales tax, dairy, etc. during a month, you can get 3 x 10 cents/gallon off once on up to 25 gallons at the Safeway gas station that month or the following month. That is a net savings of 10 cents/gallon since in my opinion to gasoline is already about 20 cents/gallon higher than the going rate. At the Chevron stations, the discount is capped at 20 cents per gallon which is just about how much their price normally is above the market prices (although Chevron does have quality gasoline and an air pump which works well at the station on Driscoll in Fremont). If you have a car or truck that holds at least 25 gallons, you could get up to $1 discount x 25 gallons = $25 but only if you spend $1000 at Safeway or buy $500 of gift cards (which pay no other rebates) for certain other establishments. In essence you could get $25 for buying $500 worth of gift cards, i.e. 5% rebate in the best case scenario. There are lots of less best scenarios. At least I could gas up my gas guzzler at Bernal Avenue on one trip to Dublin/Pleasanton, and then charge up the Prius plug-in on the next trip to the Bernal Avenue Safeway. The tank on the Prius plug-in holds only 10.4 gallons and even that almost never needs to be filled! read more

Posted on my Facebook a few minutes ago: Safeway, what the hell? Seriously, I know profit margins are slim, but don't try to fix that by pissing off your customers. Yesterday there was one, *one* regular checker aside from self-checking and 15 or Less (ergghhh, it's FEWER, but whatev). At least ten people in line waiting to check out. Shelves were understocked. Some items completely missing although I was able to get what I wanted when I asked an employee to check the back. Today? Today I made a more substantial grocery run and had the unbelievable luck to get a rookie checker. Who had not, by any stretch of the imagination, been trained. I had to tell him that the cardboard wine carrier did not, in fact, have a bar code, and that he needed to scan the individual bottles. I had to talk him through the produce list to get him to charge me for regular limes, NOT lemons, NOT Key limes. It was painful to watch him try to scan a bag of grapes that are sold by weight. It was painful to watch him struggle. It was painful to know that, through no fault of his own, he'd been thrown into the deep end of the pool on a Friday afternoon at a large grocery store, and that his immediate future includes customers being nasty to him. Thankfully, halfway through my transaction, the assistant manager showed up and talked him through the rest of it. A couple of weeks ago I attempted, and eventually succeeded, in making a deli-tray order. But it took 30 minutes and multiple tries when it should have taken 5 minutes. Machines not functioning correctly, an untrained deli worker. And when I went to pick up the trays, they weren't ready on time. I was told it had been a "busy morning". Yes, well, I had a $100 cake sitting in the back seat of my car on a warm day, and I should have been able to just pick them up and run. Instead I sat in my car with the A/C running, getting more pissed off by the minute, until the trays were actually ready, 35 minutes after they were promised. I've been a customer there since my kids were small. Since we moved into this house. That's 27 years ago. I've spent so much money there that one Christmas the store manager sent me a $100 gift certificate. But I have a *lot* of choices, and although I'm pretty loyal, I am not liking the trend toward really lousy customer service. Raley's is a tiny bit more expensive, and I'm not fond of their meat department, but the rest of the store is great. Lucky has a great selection in the meat department. Sprouts has good, cheap produce and bulk foods. Whole Foods is pricey but there are things I'll buy there. I don't need you, Safeway, I really don't. But you need me. I'm this close, *this* close, to taking my grocery money elsewhere. read more

I have been shopping at Safeway for 40+ years. They need to change the name from Safeway to Out of Inventory for sale items. I have gone to the store a day after the ad is out and lo and behold, they are out of several sale items. I have talked to the manager and writen Safeway Corperate sevral times over the years. I finally figured out that they do not make money on sale items, so to they run out of the item, they save money and Safeway hopes you will buy something else. The other gambit is a rain check, but by the time you come back with the rain check you have spent what you saved on gas, plus. This is pure bait and swicth, which is against the law. I am now a very happy Raleys customer, so far they have been excellent. read more

Try to avoid this store at all costs. It's really bad. Every time I go here I leave in a super bad mood. 95% of the employees are jerks. They don't want to help you and when they do they have pure attitude. Last few times I was here during the day the checkers were talking crap about the courtesy clerks to me. Ridiculous! I don't shop at Safeway except for fresh rolls and bagels. On a Sunday afternoon arround 2:00 pm I wanted to get 2 fresh rolls. I was in for a surprise, to see all the baskets totally emty, not a single roll or bagel left, not even a tiny crumb! Everything was gone! Well I do appreciate the new parking lot lights, (which eliminate the totally creepy atmosphere outside that they had before), this review is specific to the Drive-up and Go service. There is a $5 fee. The way it is supposed to work, is that you place an order online on the Safeway website, specify a time window in which you want to pick it up. Then you go park at a specific place and dial the telephone number on the sign. They are then supposed to bring the groceries out. This would be great if you were disabled, or had small children that were asleep in the car, or were ill. However, the first time I uses the service, my order was inaccurate and I was charged for something not in the bags. This time, the telephone number on the sign just rang, then said the mailbox had not yet been set up. I dialed the store directly, and was stuck in an endless loop, I never getting to speak to a live person, just muzak. After trying a number of times, I went into the store and asked an employee to help me. This really negates the whole convenience factor. Just posting because I'd hate someone who just had knee surgery, or had a sleeping baby, or who had the flu, and was trying to use this service. I don't think Safeway has gotten all of the kinks out of their system yet, so no head's up. read more

Came in here yesterday, they did not have any mini plastic baskets. so I spotted someone wearing a white shirt and tie and I asked where the black plastic baskets are located; he looked amazed and said : ' I"m sorry, he called out to someone but no one responded. So, he went to locate one for me and in a couple minutes, he had one for me. This store has a weak veggie section with minimal Organics brands. read more

During covid-19 pandemic, I saw at least a couple customers not wearing masks when it is required by law, and one cashier wearing the mask incorrectly but not covering her nose. Is it still safe to shop here if there is no enforcement of the required PPE?! read more

I've been here a few times and the last time I was here, I wasn't too happy with customer service. Since I had to go to Trader Joe's, I decided to stop by this store instead of the one near my home. While I was roaming around looking for what I needed, none of the employees said "hi" or "good morning" to me (it was around 8 am). When I smiled at them, they just looked at me but didn't even bother smiling back. Even at the cashier's station, I wanted the cashier to double check some prices before she rings me up. Well, she either didn't hear me or she pretty much ignored me and rang everything up and shoved it in my bags. Since I didn't want to cause a scene, I just paid and left. For $2 worth of corn and a few ingredients for burgers, it cost me $60. I'll have to reconsider coming here, the next time I was to serve burgers. read more

Probably one of the better stores in Fremont. They have a good selection and the store is clean. The produce managers know produce (what a concept) and the deli department makes good sandwiches. All-in-all a good experience. I travel out of my way to go to this store (even though the Lucky's is a lot closer). When is Whole Foods going to open in Fremont? :o) read more

Wow. At 5:00 only self check, 15-limit express lane and one full checker. I was 4 deep in the full checkout for 5-10 mins with no movement. They finally call another checker up and she doesn't pull me - the person waiting the longest (the ones in front had groceries up on belt already). Guess what? I'm the LAST person out. And since the wait was so long, I wanted to bag my own groceries because the checker was scanning and bagging - no bagger. Even then, I prefer to bag because the baggers just put things in with no rhyme or reason, using more bags than necessary and soft groceries getting smashed. Also, 4th time I've come in to use my deli chicken strips rain check, and nope - there were none. GRRR. Thinking twice next time. read more

Safeway. I usually like to go to Safeway. But this store in Fremont is subpar. Please Safeway people let's get it together. I would love to read this place higher . But for the past year or so it's disappointing me. The store is fairly well stocked. It seems a little disorganized and a little cluttered. When you look for food in the stock shelves they're always seem to be things just thrown around the store. There always seems to be frozen fish or crab legs turn all over the frozen fish area. There's always boxes of crackers and random Isles stacked in the Isle. The main thing is I wish this place would be cleaner. There's always garbage outside in the parking lot I usually love to shop at Safeway. But I may need to go to Newark or the other stores. read more

Always love to go to Safeway for breakfast burritos and sandwiches. This was by far the worst one I have gone to. The lady who helped me wasn't even around to help me. Then once I got her she did not seem like she even wanted to help. She tried to rush everything and when I asked for onions and chipotle sauce it seemed like her whole day got ruined. It's an okay location at the Fremont Hub Shopping Center, though I don't normally go out of my way to check out this particular Safeway unless I'm in the area. It's fairly large and has all your usual departments. Parking is okay, but can be tight especially because of its surrounding restaurants and stores, plus the aforementioned mall next door. read more

Disappointed with the cake..pretty dry and meh..bakery staff behind the counter disinterested..They don't have a good attitude towards the customer..seems like we are wasting their time. I like this places meat/seafood department. This store has been around for years in the heart of Fremont and they've kept it up as time has passed along. You walk in here and everything is top notch.
