Epic FAIL! Read the other reviews of the management after you read mine. The manager, RICARDO is a small, petty man, and a liar. My wife shopped...attempted to shop here, once. When my wife arrived at the register to pay, her credit card was rejected...same card she had used with no trouble earlier that day. She offered to pay with a check. They accepted this, but then denied it because...get this...she was spending too much money at Safeway. So, after removing several items from the purchase, reducing the total to ~$128, the check was again denied. (Store that amount in your mind for reference...it'll be important later on in this review.) The manger, RICADRO, was unwilling to try the credit card at the lesser amount. So, my wife called me, in tears, at a loss for what to do. I comforted her and asked to speak to the manager she was trying to work with, RICARDO. I offered to pay with my credit card over the phone. He assured me that in order to take a credit card, they had to be able to make a physical imprint of the card. I questioned this, but he insisted that it was the case. He agreed to call corporate to see if anything could be done. After some time, I received a call back, and was told how sorry he (RICARDO) was, but that there "was nothing [he] could do". My wife then began the long drive home. I called corporate customer service. The very helpful and friendly customer service representative listened to my tale of frustration, she took down the name and store and registered a complaint on our behalf. When I asked her if the policies that the Half Moon Bay Safeway manager, RICARDO, had quoted were, indeed corporate policy, she said that what RICARDO had done didn't seem right, but that Safeway's Payments Department would be able to answer definitively. She gave me a case number and transferred me to Payments. The also-very-courteous man at Payments listened to my story, and after some conversation, this is what I learned. Whether or not to accept a check of any amount was ultimately the decision of the store manager; that corporate would make a recommendation, but that it was ultimately the manger's decision. Further, that even if he chose not to make an exception, the amount under which any good check would be accepted was $125...remember the amount from earlier in the review? Funny how he just happened to miss the required amount by $3. Armed with information, I called the store in Half Moon Bay, and asked to speak to the manager, RICARDO. I was courteously put on hold, but after 15 minutes or so, no one picked up. I hung up and called again. I got the same person, she apologized and said she would stand by the phone to make sure that it was picked up this time. As if by magic, RICARDO was on the phone in seconds. I explained the corporate policy to him as it had been explained to me and asked for an explanation. He maintained that he "did all he could" and that the department that might give him authority to make an exception was closed; that he had done what his training had told him to do. Does that include lying?...because I had talked to the very department he insisted was closed a scant 30 minutes before I called him back...at least 30 minutes AFTER he claimed to have called and found the department closed. I have lived in Half Moon Bay for almost 25 years and have done my grocery shopping at Half Moon Bay Safeway store since the year 2000. My experience at this store, sorry to say, has not been a positive one at all, in fact it is the worst general grocery store I have ever shopped. The overall quality of their meats, vegetables, deli and especially the managers has been failing the public for years. On Saturday September 16, 2023 at approximately 4:30 pm I had a terrible experience with a manager "Hector" who called the police for no other reason than simply not wanting me in "his" store. The incident began when I had informed a baker employee that the artisan Ciabatta Toscana Bread loafs have not been fully cooked in the center and that this was happening for at least a few weeks. She was very glad that I had brought it to her attention and I should report this to the front customer service counter. On my way to the customer service counter I encountered on of the store managers named "Hector" and I proceeded to inform him of the situation and he replied with a defensive and combative attitude and told me to "bring the bread into the store" and to immediately "get out of his store" (!). I did not understand his reaction so I asked him for an explanation since I was just informing him of the issue and so instead of providing me with an explanation of his reaction to me he called the police! I in no way was rude to him or threatened the store in any way. "Hector" rudely walked away from me and I very perplexed and extremely upset made my way to the closest cashier and checked out. On my way out of the store he was still speaking on the phone with the police and I told "Mr. Hector" that "he should not be treating the public in this manner and should find a job better suited to his unfriendly and combative disposition. Although I am 75 years old and having recently had heart surgery, I somehow managed to safely drive home after this deeply disturbing incident. FAIL! Came here around 9:15pm to quickly pick up a couple of things. When I went to pay there were only two registers open with lines that were crazy long. When I finally made it to the cashier who also had to bag all the groceries, I asked him if there was someone else they could call to open a register. He told me there were only 3 people scheduled at that time and one person was on their lunch break. Okay I understand all that and it's not either of the cashiers fault, but where the hell is the manager to come and open a register?? Who is running this store?? Why isn't customer service a priority?? This is not the first time this has happened. If they can't manage to schedule more workers and accommodate the fluctuating number of people at off peak times, maybe they should consider self check out registers. Not to mention Safeway as a whole is over priced on just about everything they sell unless there's a sale. The only redeeming quality any Safeway has is that their selection of meats are good. I don't like buying beef and poultry that were farmed in other countries and that is mainly what's sold at other stores where everything else is a lot cheaper. The old manger lady with the glasses is rude as hell ! Took my mask off for 1 second to unfog my glasses and she flipped so I told her to please get away from me I'm a customer and dont want her talking to me in her rude talking to a child voice she continued to mumble under her breath then goes to the front too I guess call security?? I buy more stuff at Safeway than anyone else but I start getting stocked and harassed by some of the employees who are culturally sensitive and wanted more of their people of the same ancestry to be at Safeway I started getting bullied and eaves dropped on while in the parking lot and in the store and then I think they start coming to my neighborhood where I live as well and being near me as well thinking about me as well read more

Garbage... Management causes this... No more secret shoppers so no need for "Customer Service" Hopefully with the selling of Safeway they will rid of some crappy Corporate People and Store Managers. This store manager could care less about our community. Turns her nose up at it. Helpfulness is not her cup of tea. Dirty store... Oh well... The employees keep stalking me and trying to get my personal information. I think they're trying to exploit me. They're really defensive of their Jewish ancestry. They follow me around the town. I don't even go there anymore and I still follow me months later. One of them is really stalking me aggressively and always did. read more

I have no idea why people rated this Safeway so low. It has everything is super Safeway has. They have their own bakery on site. It's an Half Moon Bay, 2 miles away from where I stable my horse. It's totally convenient. The people are lovely. It's awesome. I wish they had Safeway fuel here. Otherwise hip hip hooray read more

Dis-organized, unfriendly, rude and they never have anyone to check out. I started shopping at New Leaf and found some of their prices more reasonable. Safeway just doesn't have it in the way of customer service. read more

Quite good place for shopping, has everything I typically buy. Customer service is not very polite but it's OK in comparison to other places such as Neighborhood Mart in Montara, CA which is a real dump. read more
