    dead mussels
    Mckenna M.

Sigh... I hate to write this, but I've given this place so many chances. This used to be my go to spot to pick up some mussels and clams before I head back over the hill to South Bay. The last time I was here was almost a year ago and we had a good handful of dead mussels, thus why it's been a year since. But the other day I figured I'd give them another shot. Would give 0 stars if I could. I asked for 2 lbs of mussels. They weighed them out and they cost $8/lb. They put ice in the bag directly with the mussels and when I got home I had a terrible feeling because things were starting to smell a little fishy. Going through the mussels there were probably 1-1.25lbs that were dead. Either wouldn't close when tapped/pressed or just full on cracked to pieces (See picture). The smell and the water I cleaned them in was gross and it wasn't the biggest confidence booster that even the alive ones were safe to eat. I will thus never be giving them another chance and not returning here for any seafood needs. :(

Half Moon Bay Fish Market is a solid spot if you're looking for fresh seafood at a reasonable price. We came here and got a dozen oysters--they were fresh, well-shucked, and priced really well. The market itself doesn't have a huge selection of seafood for purchase, but the real appeal is buying seafood directly from the local fishing boats and bringing it here to have it steamed and prepared. It's a cool setup, but if you're just stopping by for a bite, there's not a ton to choose from. Overall, it's a great place for fresh seafood, but nothing particularly special beyond that. Solid oysters, good prices--4/5.

My family LOVES stopping here on our way to the beach. Living in the valley, we cherish our coastal getaways, and it has become tradition to get king crab legs and shrimp to enjoy while sitting in the sand. It is always fresh and delicious, and the staff has always been warm and welcoming! 100% recommend!

Oysters were very disappointing. $25 for a dozen. 13 of them had a parasitic crab in it.

Got oysters. Most all of them were rotten. 2 were empty. One had petroleum all over it (in the photo). Wouldn't recommend unless you're seeking food poisoning

It's in beautiful Half Moon Bay. You can't buy fish and seafood any fresher than that.

Always tries to upsell you on more fish than you want or things you don't need. Lies about things being Organic when they're clearly not.

Maybe short staffed? Grilled fish on taco itself was nice but the rest of it was not good- had what seemed like grilled canned pineapple in it? and the crab roll tacos were basically fried egg rolls - not tacos at. Yes real crab but no flavor! Just crab and wrap-unseasoned and I pictured something like what I saw on their website. Habanero mango salsa was pretty sweet and you can't taste anything but that when you use it. Unfortunately that's what came with both dishes. It doesn't complement the dish at all , it hides it. We didn't use it. Pretty disappointing experience. They do have a nice outdoor seating area. Maybe there's better items on the menu and we just missed it.

After pointing it out, they switched it to a platter for 3, but it was still missing crabs and other types of seafood that should have been included. We also ordered clam chowder, which arrived cold. The total bill was $189, but the food we received was worth around $50 or less based on portion and quality. Completely unacceptable and not worth the money. I would not recommend this place.

Tourist Trap or Worth the Trip?…read more Worth the stop -- with a few caveats. I stopped by The Fisherman's Taverna in Half Moon Bay, and honestly? I really enjoyed what I ordered. The clam chowder was a highlight -- rich, creamy, and served in a classic sourdough bowl that's practically a Bay Area rite of passage. Each bite had a nib of buttery flavor that made me keep going back for more. Purist bakers might cringe at sourdough being hollowed out and flooded with chowder, but in the moment -- as the afternoon fog crept in -- it felt just right. The "prawn" cocktail was a bit of a mislead -- the shrimp technically qualify as prawns, but don't expect jumbo-sized crustaceans. Still, they were fresh and paired well with my Corona Light. One quirky detail: you have to serve your own soft drinks. It caught me off guard at first, but walking behind the counter and filling my own cup with sweet orange Fanta ended up being a weirdly charming part of the experience. The only real letdown was the lack of available fresh seafood. Dungeness crab? Out. Ceviche? Out. Clams? Also out. Most of the "fresh catch" menu was unavailable, which left mostly fried options and chowder. A bummer if you came craving the real coastal fare. Final Thoughts: It toes the line between tourist stop and local hangout. While it may not deliver the full fresh seafood spread, if you manage expectations, grab a bowl of chowder, and soak in the coastal vibe -- it's still a satisfying experience.

As a parent, I'm always trying to find healthier, chemical-free options for my kids to avoid the health risks associated with conventional store brands like Driscoll's. We thought paying a premium for a case of organic berries here would be the safer, better route for our family. Unfortunately, it was a massive disappointment. As soon as we opened the order, we found that a large portion of the strawberries were already soft, spoiled, and covered in fuzzy grey mold (see attached photos). Instead of a healthy snack for my children, we received contaminated produce that is completely unsafe to eat. Selling moldy fruit to families who are intentionally trying to buy high-quality, organic food is unacceptable. They clearly aren't inspecting their inventory before it goes out the door. Will not be buying produce here again.

They said "22 minutes, flesh side down, no seasoning". I pushed back a bit " olive oil and salt and pepper, right?" The fishmonger looked at me dubiously. The natural oil from the fish is all that is needed. He also recommended to cover the pan and cut the 1.5 pound piece into two prior to cooking and possibly throw some green onion on top. Dinner that.night was amazing. I used a shallow dutch oven, and a touch of pepper and flaky salt, I then threw on top of the fish some green onion and a tangle of fresh green beans untrimmed. Those green beans, I topped with a little seafood seasoning mix I made which is basically Kosher salt, thyme, cumin, garlic salt, smoked paprika - The seasoning only touched the skin side. I also topped with a cut lemon and left it covered on low heat- ( my stove runs hot) . I dod not touch it for 22 minutes. This was definitely the best thing that I have ever made in my kitchen. Prep time 3 minutes- I have also purchased fresh salmon at the farmers market but was wowed by the Char. Perfect instructions were given and I followed them- mostly. No fishy taste, no smell, perfectly easy to clean. The delicate flesh held together snd was moist yet flaky. The prices are decent and certainly worth it for the quality and freshness. High end restaurant quality! Even if you are a gourmet cook, do less. i love produce and fish in it's most natural state . Don't guild the lily with anything you buy from this vendor. Ask for prep instructions from the experts and you will not be disappointed!! Thanks guys!!

The dine-in line was a 2-hour wait when we arrived and had closed for the day by the time we left. In general, I'm not the type of person to wait for food no matter how good it is, and unfortunately I didn't think Barbara's Fishtrap was anything too special. My sister and I shared a mini fish-trap combo, Caesar salad, and a cup of soup-- we had almost 30% leftover. The variety of seafood in the combo is really nice! But I thought the breading was soggy and in general just really needed the sauce for a punch of flavor. The fried zucchini was by far the best thing we ate (it was seriously to-die for), which feels wrong for a seafood combo. :P Service was friendly and were trying their best to help everyone, but wow we could tell they were super overwhelmed. :( Would not come back but glad I tried it, especially with such a neighborhood hype around this place!
