While the woman was making the sandwiches I saw her wipe her runny nose with the back of her plastic glove hand. Another woman started to dust the sneeze guard while she was making the sandwiches. The flower department tried to charge me twice as much for asking them to combine two bouquets together for something that was 26$ I was being charged $52. I asked to speak to a manger and he too was rude and told me that's Safeway policy and that's how they make there money. I've never been charged at any other Safeway to the same thing. Arrogant rude manager who I actually really don't think was the manager but was pretending to be since the flower dept lady went to go get some back up. Very sad service. Spoiled my whole afternoon. Decent Safeway- great stop for snacks and/or liquid sustenance before hitting the beach or heading home with a group of friends. Walk in through the right-hand entrance and the liquor/beer aisle is straight ahead. Bonus points for having an employee doing beer tastings today! Don't think I've ever seen that in a grocery store before. Huge beer selection, too. Staff openly stated that they had more that weren't out due to lack of room- prices set to move stock, too. $13 for a 12 pack of Third Shift? Yes please. Appreciated the chilled wine selection too- no need to run home and take a risk sticking it in the freezer for a quick cool, just serve when you get home. Fairly average in every other way, but despite the packed parking lot the checkout lines moved quickly and staff was surprisingly friendly. read more

This is the closest Safeway to my home and it has a little bit of everything. Prices are a bit higher than grocery outlet and smart and final but since those stores are at quite a distance from me I don't mind paying a little more for things I could potentially get for a bit cheaper. I have had a great experience when ordering cakes and cupcakes from the bakery. But their bakery has plenty of pre made cakes and cupcakes you can purchase. The balloons you can get here sometimes surprise me as they can be pretty nice (I got some foil like latex balloons today). The only reason why I didn't give them a 5 star rating is because sometimes the produce is way to ripe almost rotten (not all the time though!). read more

This is a respectable branch of the respected Safeway chain. One event made me think this store almost deserves FIVE stars. My wife Arlene went in to get a few items, which included hatch chili peppers and Anaheim peppers both on sale for 99 cents per pound now in season. At the register the Anaheim peppers went through for twice as high $1.99 per pound. So Arlene patiently waited a while and requested it be adjusted to 99 cents per pound. They insisted, however, that it was going to be FREE. I am also impressed that are three metal picnic tables outside the north door, and that management posted a notice not to loiter over one hour. One of the worst grocery stores i have ever been to. Laziest employees with horrible attitudes. Incredibly rude and sulky. Every single visit to this dump yo uwill have to wait for a checker if you use a human checker there is always a line built up. Now they have self checkout, same story. In an attempt to save money safeway has been putting these in stores alot. The result being a cumbersome experience to buy groceries. This store always runs out of items. Pisspoor grocery, meat department, and pretty much everything else. I have bought numerous items - eggnog and other items that have been rancid upon opening. The expiration date hadnt passed so that means improper storage of the food. The aisles are sized for Ant-Man and always have crap in the way. This is because they dont stock the shelves and then just leave the stuff in the way. I have frequently had to engage in planning with other customers for how to maneuver around the store and not get in each others way all the while chuckling at the maze theyve put us in. In short, manage the store better. Lose some money as a corporation and hire people. Go ahead and fire the ones with nasty personalities. Understaffed, unsanitary mess of a store. Absolutely disgusting, appalling bathroom with piss all over the toilet seat. No soap! If you put two and two together that means the employees are hbdling food wit hands that have wiped their butts! Went in for some basics today and was heading over to the bakery when we see a man dumping loaves of bread on the floor. I was shocked to discover it was the delivery man. He was throwing them on the ground with such force and quickness, it's a surprise that they weren't all flattened. He then filled the shelves with what I assume was new bread and placed the ones he had thrown on the floor back onto the shelves. My husband and I are disgusted with this practice. People take these packages home and place them on their tables after they've been on the floor! I can't believe this is even allowed. read more

This is my neigborhood store. And I used to love it, especially after they re-modeled ((I would go to the store in Linda Mar/Pacifica sometimes before the re-model.) But ever since the Albertson's closed in HMB, this store runs out of so much stuff on a regular basis - especially if something is on sale - that it's not always worth going to at all. Going on the weekend is just a nightmare (it was always busier but now it's ridiculous) and it's much dirtier (floors, shelves.) I realize they just got much busier with the only other full grocery store on the coast closing, which they are probably happier about, but they need to provide the same level of service to keep people happy. Even the cashiers/employees are different. They were always very friendly and helpful but now I've noticed they are not more frequently than they are. I have switched to the Piazza's or Safeway in San Mateo on my way home from work sometimes just to make sure I can get things and avoid the crowds. read more

This place had horrible customer service, there was a disgusting smell throughout, and an overall dirty vibe for a Safeway chain store. My daughter and I had to use the restroom and as soon as we entered the back doors towards restroom and food storage, we encountered a horrific smell. After waiting 20 minutes to use the restroom, we finally enter and the smell was even worse! I was horrified when I saw the mold and filth everywhere.(see image I've posted in 'pictures' here, of the mold in restroom) I made my daughter 'hold it' even longer, and we went somewhere else. Very bad experience with Safeway grocery delivery tonight. Placed order through website this morning, confirmed for delivery today between 6 pm- 10 pm. Got a receipt via email showing my card was charged including the $3.99 delivery fee( Final Receipt). I called and confirmed via their computer voicemail and also via online chat that the.... order is "confirmed". But no text from Safeway delivery by 8 pm so I started to worry. Just before 9 pm I called and Safeway Corporate Grocery Delivery customer service and they said well everything says "confirmed" and you're still in the delivery window, we're sure they'll be delivered. But said I could call the HMB Safeway to check on the status of the order if I was worried? Okay not very helpful but I am worried so I'll call. I called HMB Safeway and the woman answering for customer service said she'd check the back, and sure enough my order is there she says it's packed up and ready to be picked up. But she says DoorDash hasn't picked it up yet. I said well did Safeway send them the order? Can she check? Because normally I get a text saying the order was received etc. I think something is wrong. She says she doesn't know, but I can call DoorDash ( notice a trend here with Safeway telling the customer to call around ). So I call DoorDash and they say they don't have any record of receiving the order from Safeway. So they call HMB Safeway while I waited on hold, which was nice of DoorDash to do, at least their customer service took some action, and the HMB customer service woman tells them well the order went through so just tell the customer she can just come pick up her groceries. No I cannot. People order groceries to be delivered for a reason. I am not able to pick them up in HMB tonight. So I call the corporate grocery # again, and I tell them something is wrong, Can he please call HMB Safeway and straighten this out? He then says the delivery service used was not DoorDash. OMG So HMB Safeway gave me bad information. And he says he's not allowed to tell me who will be delivering, and they won't check to make sure there is no problem until 10: 05 pm. So the customer has to wait more than 4 hours and then call back and customer service will start taking some sort of action. We all know as it gets later and later the odds of anybody delivering these groceries tonight is getting slimmer and slimmer. I called the HMB Safeway store back and they won't pick up the phone anymore! Wow. I hope the HMB store manager can determine who there answered the customer service line at 9 pm on 7/29/2021. That person has ZERO customer service skills. And gives out bad information. If Safeway advertises that they do grocery delivery but farms that work out to other vendors, Safeway should handle the follow up with those vendors not tell the customer they can call or they can just come pick up groceries they charged me to have delivered. Sitting here for 10:05 pm to come, to call to report no groceries delivered. It's pretty darn obvious something went wrong and we are not going to get the groceries tonight. Beyond frustrated. ** Update as predicted no groceries so I call the Grocery Delivery # again and guess what they close at 10 pm! HaHaHa So the guy I spoke to that said call back after 10 pm knew exactly what he was doing. Wow. Just Wow. I do not recommend Safeway Grocery Delivery in HMB. What fiasco. ** Update 7/30/2021: 877-505-4040 Corporate Grocery Delivery Customer Service - Luis. Says the soonest they can have my order from YESTERDAY delivered is tomorrow Saturday 7/31. I said that doesn't work for us. He says I can reorder the whole grocery order online and look for a delivery window again today. I asked why? HMB Safeway has the groceries bagged, why can't you just have a delivery service pick them up and deliver them today? Why am I not given any priority? He offered a refund. But I guess Dawn's efforts may have worked. I just got a call from HMB Safeway they'll have the order delivered by 10 a.m. this morning. They have no idea why no delivery service picked up yesterday. This whole system is broken with Safeway. They need to be more proactive and customer focused. But I do appreciate the local store coming through in the end. read more

Very rude employees EVEN if you're being nothing but polite and respectful. If you ask a worker politely if they can help you, they just walk right by you! When someone finally does answer any of your questions they are very condescending and sound irritable. Also, two things I bought turned out to be rotten: this fruit platter thing and a can of oysters. That's a biohazard. I won't be buying anything from there again. I have the option of shopping at the Pacifica Safeway or HMB Safeway. Whenever possible I choose Pacifica. The HMB Safeway always leaves me frustrated with the checkers. Instead of focusing on checking my groceries, they constantly talk to each other, gossiping about other employees or talking about their weekend. I once stood there while two checkers talked about a fellow employee only a few feet away. Today, as my groceries were being checked, another checker walked up to the stand. She stood there as my groceries were checked and ready to be bagged and did nothing. The first checker walked away and she stepped up to the register while my groceries sat on the conveyer belt. I finally grabbed a bag and bagged my groceries. Neither acknowledged my groceries or me doing the bagging. This is so typical of this store. read more

The person in charge of stocking this store should be fired. Never expect to find half the items in the weekly mailer in stock, or any staples you might need for special occasions (stuffing before Thanksgiving, sugar around Christmastime...). The deli routinely runs out of the only thing I buy (fried chicken), and I'm lucky if I can find the eggs I like every other time I'm there. Don't bother asking staff if there might be stock in the back. You'll grow old waiting for them to return - if they return at all. There are long lines no matter when you go - at both the deli and the checkout. The place is bookended by homeless people. There's an encampment out back, and someone parked next to the exit onto the highway. For the most part I shop at the Pacifica Safeway. Every once in a while I'll stop by the Half Moon Bay store - I'm always disappointed. read more

They have the bike rack blocked. I called their corporate headquarters and they made the store manager move the pallets of water bottles away from the bike rack. But the next day they put the pallets back on one side. So now the bike rack is usually full. These days bikes should be encouraged. Safeway should be embarassed. read more

Really disorganized place/people. Looking for stuff to buy smores. A section with graham crackers and chocolate... but no marshmallows? I walked up to an employee and asked him where I could find marshmallows. He ignored me first, then looked confused. Finally he said "Sorry I'm kinda new here" and sauntered off. WTF? ... Then I asked a cashier. He was very helpful in finding us the lighter and graham crackers, but then directed us on a wild goose chase for marshmallows. I read all of the negative reviews. I can see some of the points, but not all. Yes, it is not the nicest Safeway I have ever shopped in and I can understand why many people drive up to Pacifica to shop at their larger store that has a lot more stock. With the competition of the health food store, New Leaf, across the street [used to be Lucky's] they have upped their quality of some things and have added a lot of new brands to their shelves, but I really have no complaints. Yes, sometimes the quality of the produce is not the best, but I have found worse at other stores - even high-end stores like Whole Foods. I have found terrific produce that comes from local farms that is fresh and tasty. I have a head of romaine in my frig. that is sweet and crisp. I have fresh raspberries, blueberries, blackberries and strawberries that are very fresh and delicious. By reading name tags and calling the staff by their first names with the same respect and pleasantness I would expect from them and I have not had any problems. Everyone has a bad day. If a cashier acts snippy maybe being friendly and concerned asking her [by her first name] if she has had a bad day would break the ice. Sometimes we do not know how bad we appear to others when we are bummed or depressed over a bad day. Having someone actually care and ask if they are alright would be the kindness that could snap them out of their funk. And yes, there is never anyone at the Customer Service counter and it can take a long time to get the help you want or need, but all you need to do is ask a cashier to call up someone and they will do so readily. If you just stand there and steam getting more angry as the minutes pass by - well, DO something! Go find the person you need or have a cashier call them on the intercom. If the line you are standing in gets all tied up then take your things and go to another line! If what you want to buy is not on the shelf go ask someone to check in back to see if there is any there. And bottom line - if you think it is the 'lousiest produce' you've ever seen - GO TO NEW LEAF! It will cost you move, but it is all organic and very fresh! Stop complaining and DO SOMETHING! Make phone calls to corporate and get the resolution to your problems that you want, and if you don't get them - drive the 12 miles to the Pacifica Safeway. I'm giving them 4-stars as I feel there is always room for improvement. Maybe now that Lucky and Safeway have merged they will remodel the Half Moon Bay store. read more

Unless you are stuck needing last minute beach grub or a local like myself who has grown numb to this store's incompetence, get your groceries at the San Mateo Safeway right off 92 before going over the hill to HMB or else at the Pacifica Safeway if taking Highway 1. The reason is, that this place is horribly stocked, managed and staffed. It really is a joke. They are almost ALWAYS out of most of their sale items and fail to re-stock their shelves with any sense of regularity or urgency. It is amazing to me that another supermarket has not opened in HMB to take advantage of this Safeway's incompetence. New Leaf does not count, unless you enjoy paying $6 for an 8 ounce juice worth about $.75 cents! The fish and meat guys always treat you like you are interrupting their freaking day and it never ceases to amaze me! THEY ARE BEING PAID TO SELL AND PROVIDE CUSTOMER SERVICE and they can't do that if they are almost always NOWHERE TO BE FOUND IN THE ENTIRE STORE! If someone truly took an ounce of managerial pride in this store, they could increase its fish and meat department sales production by at least 45% alone. I'm so grateful that this place is here, and that it's open 24 hours. The cashiers are very friendly. Sometimes they are overworked with all the renovation going on, but they still smile. Watch out for moldy produce. Also double-check the prices when you order at the deli counter - I got charged 4.99 for an item advertised as 1.99, and the lady at the counter wasn't very nice about it when I complained. read more

Unfortunately, we only had contact with one person while we were in the store. Derrick was our cashier. We asked him if we could get cash back and how much. He told us $200 but he only had $100 in his register. I asked him if he could get us $100 more and he actually turned his head away from us and ignored my question. So, I asked him again. Just a wee update....I come here a LOT and I've never had a bad customer service experience. The checkout has moved efficiently every time and the clerks are always friendly. Oh, and I'm also very impressed with the quality of their fresh fish - I've bought some awesome cuts of fresh albacore, swordfish, and salmon here (helloooo mercury poisoning....oh well, I'm not shitting out any kids, what do I care) and they've been super fresh and tasty every time. Priced extremely well too. Their wine selection is much better than I expected for a small-town grocery and the bakery is great. The cupcakes are to die for. Like I said before, if you have a problem with this Safeway, I invite you to check out the ones in SSF....this one by comparison is a fricking dream come true. I've never had a problem with customer service, the employees have always treated me respectfully. I do think that this Safeway is VERY understaffed. The lines are always long and it takes an unusually long amount of time to finally pay and get out. The produce here is always on the verge of going bad, and they run out of things very quickly. I would prefer to go to the Pacifica Safeway as it is way more full and organized. read more

Admittedly I haven't been to this Safeway a lot but it is packed every time I've gone and I can only applaud the staff of this Safeway for keeping up. A lot of these reviewers make valid points that it is slow and out of items but it gets so much traffic that it's very unrealistic to keep up. If these reviewers want to see what bad service actually looks like, go to the Safeway in Pollock Pines where there are consistently only 2 to 3 lines open with 20 people in each line with most employees working slowly while having conversations with each other. At least this Safeway has every single lane open and are working their fastest to get people through the long lines. Put it this way, no business is perfect. If their is an honest effort being made in a super crowded place like half moon bay, I can't ask for anything else. read more

The cashiers and baggers are very nice. The quality has diminished in the last year. The produce doesn't seem as fresh and I've returned numerous things in the deli area. They used to carry great tortillas that you would finish yourself. They carry a different brand bow which is horrible. This brand stick together so half the package is wasted. I've also had to return a package the expiration was 2 months away but they were all moldy. They took Ay the great olive bar and now have prepackaged so you can't get a variety. Also today in the produce only one bag holder had plastic produce bags in. Hope things turn around. I go there now when I forget to buy things over the hill at other stores. read more

When it comes to customer service, this Safeway is absolutely terrible. I've gone through that Safeway a few times and every single time I've gone, I have been ignored like I didn't exist. The last time I went there was about 2 weeks ago. I went through a checkout stand that was manned by the front end manager. The front end manager is supposed to set an example for the employees. This is done by greetimg the customer, asking if they need help (if there is more than 1 bag of groceries) and thanking the customer when the transaction is done. He did not do that at all. Instead, he had a full on conversation with the courtesy clerk that was at the checkstand behind him. In fact, he paid absolutely no attention to me at all. The way he bagged my items was terrible. You're not supposed to pack the soft fruit on the bottom of the bag. To make it worse, he wasn't really paying attention to how the transaction was being paid. The only reason why I gripe about that Safeway is because I used to work for one. In fact, customer service was the main thing that was grilled into my brain. No matter where you were on the floor, you greeted your customers, took the initiative, and asked if the customer needed assistance. It's pretty sad to see that particular Safeway not abide by the standards of other Safeways. If you think about it, Safeway's prices are pretty high so there is a level of expectation that should be met. A) Produce should look tasty or at least decent, B) the store should be clean and C) Customer Service is first priority. That Safeway was clean and from what I can tell the produce looked ok but the customer service there doesn't suck its actually non-existent. I would only go there for last minute items. read more

Well, the rudeness in this location is shocking! Here I am a visitor to the area and cashier can not even be polite or any eye contact. Even my daughters mentioned how much tension was in this store.
