The usual deliveries from Safeway go off without a hitch, until today. The order was almost an hour late and was missing a very important item. I called the corporate office and the only solution they had was to give me a refund 7 days from now. I asked if the item could still be delivered and the agent replied that I would only get delivery with $50 purchase. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was put on hold for 10 minutes. No one ever answered. The next call was to the store where they are very friendly and offered to resolve the issue. The corporate customer service office is not at all helpful. read more

SAFEWAY IS OVERCHARGING CUSTOMERS FOR DECLINED SUBSTITUTIONS Every time I have declined a substitution Safeway immediately sends me an email acknowledging the decline, stating the item has been refunded. And every time Safeway has charged me for the declined substitution even though the item was not included in the delivery. The delivery part works fine, but the amount they are charging Is incorrect. The online receipt appears correct with the declined item not listed in the itemized charges, however it is included in the total charged. You have to manually add up the individual items listed on the receipt to catch the overcharge. I have called Safeway customer support at 1-877-505-4040 multiple times to report the issue and request a refund, but the issue has still not been fixed. And it always takes multiple phone calls to actually obtain a refund. How many customers are they overcharging who never catch the error? What is Safeway doing with the customers' monies that were collected for declined substitutions that were never delivered? read more

The last two deliveries, the drivers did not read the very specific and clear delivery instructions. The first one, he couldn't read English AND the bag reeked of cigarette smoke. Today's delivery, the guy claimed he couldn't get into the building, but I gave him the code. He sent me a text with a pic of where he left it. I'm ill and can't walk down the 3rd flights. Delivery was late!! Not the shopper's fault. Internal payment card that the shopper's use was not working. Additionally, Instacart charges a fee for delivery, a fee for service, and gives you the option to add a tip. All good with them charging a fee since they bring you the groceries. "Hidden charges" My shopper left their receipt, the mark up all the items from a few cents to dollars more. This is wrong. Why not be transparent about the additional money collected. Absolutely horrible. Deserves a 0 rating. Not only did they incorrectly attempt to deliver my food two hours early using Door Dash, there were multiple items missing. Would you like to have a random person call you 10 times during class just to yell at you? If I never called about the missing order, they would of never noticed because the woman on door dash "completed" the delivery. Of course after calling to make another delivery, it showed up an hour late with more than 7 items missing. They also gave me one banana when I ordered 2 pounds. I've been checking for delivery window times since COD-19 started, and they have never had one. Thank goodness for INSTACART! We've been getting our deliveries from them in 2 days max., and the last time SAME DAY! I had placed the order late at night, added something to the order at 3 am, and they delivered it all (big order) by 11 am! They're amazing. They call or text you if something on your list is not available & ask if you'd like what they found as a substitute. The delivery guys and gals are so nice, eggs are never broken, ice cream sandwiches are perfectly frozen, etc! Oh, and if you join their "Express" delivery for $9.99 a month, you don't pay the $3.99 delivery fee. That sounded like a commercial, but I didn't know that for our first two deliveries, and the delivery fees were high. So, if you're going to order things more than twice a month, or from more than 2 of the places that they will shop for you, definitely do that! I ordered things for my mom and had them delivered to her, as well. She's not computer savvy and didn't know how to order. We're never going to the grocery store again. I'm not kidding. read more

I have used this service since 2005. Groceries were always delivered on time. I don't know what has changed but now I'm lucky if they are delivered 1/2 hour late. As usual I am waiting again. Delivery between 10-12. It is now 1. No delivery! This is so disrespectful of the customers. I'm done with it. Lost a valuable customer. The following is an update 5 months later. I do still use Safeway for my grocery delivery. The delivery has improved. Maybe the store listened to my complaints? I don't know. I will say that the employees who deliver the groceries are great. It was the scheduling of the drivers that needed improvement. All the drivers are hard workers and try their best when overloaded with deliveries. Called the customer service centre (6/28 @9:30 pm Pacific Time), but the customer service centre was closed due to time zone differences. Called the very next morning on June 29th, and a gentleman placed the order for redelivery for Saturday, 6/30, 8-9 AM delivery. The delivery STILL did not show. I called again on Saturday morning, June 30th, and a very nice lady through customer service, said she did not know what had happened. She even attempted to contact the drivers, but said "no one answered." She stated she would credit back the $189.19 charge on my card. That it would take 3-5 business days. It is now July 12th, and still no credit has returned to my bank account. We would like this to be rectified immediately, I'm not sure what to even do at this point besides calling a lawyer? If you have any stairs or anything more complicated than a door on the street, whomever Safeway uses to delivery, can't handle it. We have specified there are 4 flights of stairs and medical conditions prevent us from helping - this is why we are using delivery service. Numerous times, they complain and leave it all downstairs, or arrayed on the stairs. We'd happily pay extra for the service and get what we need, but Safeway doesn't allow this. Besides horrible delivery, we have had a number of times when scheduled time comes and goes with no delivery and we have to contact them. They then offer us worse times on the next day for delivery. Why even try using this service? It might better to throw your money out your window and hope a random stranger delivers your groceries. read more

Worst experience ever. I sat around at home during the advertised delivery window and finally it gets past 9pm at night. Eventually I get a text message that states that my delivery has been outsourced to Doordash. "That's odd," I think, "I've never seen them outsource grocery deliveries to them before." I check my order on the Doordash portal and I see that out of the $193 total they have amended my receipt (due to product scarcity brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic scare) now showing a grand total of $153 -- they have removed items being delivered that are out-of-stock. Fair enough I suppose, they can't deliver items that they don't have. Eventually, way past the 5 hour delivery window (yes I waited the whole time) at around 9:45 at night some kid from Doordash finally shows up on my porch. Out of the $153 total expected he has three light bags that he's casually holding in one hand. The bags have bread, chips, ice cream and pot pies in them, maybe $40 worth of groceries. Over 75% of all of the items are missing. My credit card is still charged $153. He tells me to call Safeway, and that "it's not his problem or his fault" (gee, couldn't be bothered check the receipt and compare it with the trivial number of items that Safeway handed off to him before he leaves the store I guess?) Calling the Safeway number I see that they're closed. They can't be bothered to stay open until all of their deliveries are concluded I suppose. I also try calling the physical Safeway location where my delivery originated from: "Sorry, that's Safeway Dot-Com, not our problem." It seems to be nobody's problem at this time except mine. You would think that living in the same town where Safeway's (Albertson's) world headquarters is based out of that I'd get better service. read more

DONT USE!!! I had an order delivery Sunday and when the driver came he had a few bags and I made a comment of spending more than it looked like he had. When I unloaded the bags I noticed many things weren't there. I also noticed that NONE of the just 4 u discounts were taken off. I called Safeway and they processed a refund for the just 4 u discounts and rescheduled the delivery for the missing items for Monday between 6-8. Well, nobody showed. I called customer service again and they said they see the appt and the driver is running a little late. They placed a call to the driver and said someone will call me back with an ETA. By 9:30 I gave up, no call and no groceries were ever received. The customer service was closed by this time and I waited until Tuesday and sent a Facebook message to Safeway with no response. I called customer service again and now they processed a refund for the items I didn't get. But no apologies received. I'm very disappointed in Safeway and won't be back. I am SO pleased with Safeway's home delivery. My experience was nothing but good. I'd just had a sub-par experience with one of the gig driver/grocery delivery things- I'd just gotten a coupon for Free Delivery AND $20. off entire bill! Whoo-hoo! Two cool and funny guys showed up just before time window was up (I told them to take their time, and I am on far side of town so probably the last one on their list of deliveries) which was perfectly fine. They were smiling, quick and never had a frown, or a whine, nor mentioned the extreme heat they were working in. They acted as if they were doing this all for fun and not for work! They really quickly and gently put my stuff all on the counter & were done before I could even think. Every thing on my online order list was delivered! (except for the big bag of oranges, they're often sold out at the store, NO biggie) The produce & fruits were perfect- clean, fresh, exactly right ripeness. The deli meat was cleanly packaged, very fresh- everything was beautiful! Safeway, are you hearing this? These guys have to do a lot of work to fill just one order, which consists of picking out each item on your list- and they did it with care. I know they did because the proof was in my order. On top of all this, they adamantly, genuinely refused a tip. I tried tricking them into thinking a bill fell out of one of their pockets, they laughed heartily at my feeble attempt at trying to get them to accept it (those who know me personally - would find my trying to give someone money hard to believe ;) these guys, they acted as if they did this job for fun, as a hobby. That's the feeling I got out of it. Such a good experience. Safeway, keep it up and you will WIN the grocery delivery business. I get nothing from safeway from this review, I'm a real customer & hold no shares or interest in them whatsoever. If you sign up for their emails, you get coupons for free deliveries, or money off your entire bill, or both. Way worth it. I don't know if it's just online or if it's the same in-store, but Safeway prices are absolutely ridiculous. I used to order from Safeway online every other week and would spend about 600 dollars on groceries. When I started going to Fry's and Target, the amount I spent on groceries was literally cut in half. The delivery isn't bad... there's almost always something out of stock, though, which is kind of frustrating. Epic fail. I was excited to try this service, the app was easy enough to maneuver but the actual service was an epic fail. I chose the next available delivery slot on the website which was the next day between 8-9 pm The order never showed up! No call, no email, no explanation just a charge on my credit card for no actual product or service. I emailed the company several times with no response then called them to find that I had to wait on hold for an hour to speak to a person, that person told me that there was no reason for it not to be delivered and the soonest that they could actually deliver it was another 48 hours away let's see if I actually get the refund or if I'm going to have to call my bank. I am stuck at home with my foot in a cast for the next three weeks. Going to the grocery store is usually something i like to do, but entrusted it to safeway. They're a huge company, they should be able to get this right, i thought. The delivery man arrived within the window, which was nice. I'm not going anywhere, so it would have been OK had he been late. 9 out of 26 were totally missing. They were on the receipt, not listed as 'out of stock', and i was definitely charged for them. They were the most expensive items of the bunch: some organic sausages, tortellini, capers, and half of my produce, celery, corn, carrots. It took about 10 minutes to get this information conveyed to someone on their 1800 number. They've offered to send somebody over tomorrow during an inconvenient time to re-deliver. Our home has been using safeway grocery delievery online for about a year and a half now. Once you get used to the website, learn how it works and how to carefully select the options at the end of the check out its a great service! Yes, a few times our orders show up a bit late but we typically get a phone call from the driver or simply call and ask about our order. I have never experienced the bad service that most of the reviewers mention. Overall, in this house we've had nothing but a great experience with this service and we tend to order our groceries from them at least twice a week- when you get your groceries delievered it leaves a lot more room for fun and other things in the day vs spending an hour or so at the grocery store. I use this service all the time, and I have for years now. There are pros and cons to the delivery service (mostly pros), but as/is the service is great. The Pros ... I typically get exactly what I ordered (occasionally they are out of stock) and the delivery person is always prompt, helpful, and very nice. This is a convenient way to get groceries when you have a busy schedule. It's also nice not to have to carry the groceries in from the car or lug cases of water through the house. The delivery fee is inexpensive (and is reduced if you pick a larger window) and you often get free delivery codes from Safeway. The items are fairly well organized, and you can shop by your history, by aisle, or by searching for the name of an item. You do still get Safeway discounts shopping this way. The Cons... You don't get the selection of the whole store. Many times I look for specific items (not necessarily common items, but not rare either) and cannot find them. I've also noticed that pop (soda, coke, whatever you call it) is ridiculously expensive, and though you do get the Safeway promotions, I generally spend more money due the limited availability of brands/items. In short, what I spend is worth it to me, as my time is more valuable. And when they expand the service further it will be way more awesome - in the interim - I cannot live without it. Decided to try Safeway's home delivery. Glad we used the "free" delivery code for the first delivery (and last delivery). We didn't set our expectations very high, we knew there would be some product change out due to the lack of bar code/item number ordering, no biggie. Over half our order wasn't even packed to be delivered. The delivery driver was really nice and very professional. We called customer service right after the driver left and were greeted very ho-hum, you called for what? The gentleman on the other end of the phone wasn't very concerned with taking care of the customer. His fix was to credit an item that was rotten and the remainder of our order would be delivered before end of day. NOT! We got a phone call at the end of the day that the delivery would not be coming back out to our house today, so we would have to reschedule the delivery. Good thing we were trying their service and didn't have an immediate need for the items they neglected to send the first time. Over all we are really disappointed in the quality check for the fresh items, accuracy check for the items ordered and the lack of customer service provided by the initial gentleman on the phone. The User Experience on the website wasn't all that smooth. When I change my address (because we had moved) and hit the update button, the website changed the street address. I take responsibility here because I didn't go back and check it. Because of this, the driver had to call for directions though. Again, this was my fault. However, the Customer Experience on the delivery had me wanting more. The delivery had wrong quantities and items "not in stock" (even though I saw plenty the day before). Incidentally, when I said I saw them at the store, the driver said, "Why didn't you just get them when you were there?" I said, "Because I am testing your service." That was still not a big issue to me. I think where I made my decision not to try again was when I realized that I am not good with understanding the sizes and weights of foods. Because of my own ignorance, I ended up with huge sized tortillas and bottles of wine. In the end, I can't even trust myself to buy food online. read more

Okay, so maybe I didn't learn my lesson well enough the first time I used this service. I needed to place a large order for our school. Since I am not aware of any other grocery stores that delivery, I thought I'd give Safeway another try. ABSOLUTE FAIL. I placed my order on line, selected my delivery, specifically stated that there should be NO substitutions made to the order (this part was critical because these items would be given to small children/students, and I didn't want them receiving cookies and possibly items containing nuts, due to food allergies, etc). Once my order was placed, I paid, and selected my delivery window. I never heard anything back from Safeway, so I assumed everything was fine. The day of the delivery, the items arrived, almost half of the items had been substituted with things like fudge cookies, and I'd been shorted items. I later found out that there were many granola bars containing nuts. Fortunately, our teachers are very alert and one child who happened to have an allergy to nuts was given something else that day. I contacted Safeway and expressed my concern about their lack of customer service, also reminding them that this is the second time I have tried to use their service and the second time it has failed. The gal on the other end of the phone offered no apology for substituting and short changing me of items, and instead told me that it was my responsibility to know which store the delivery was coming from and to contact that store directly to make sure they had the requested items in stock. Of the 5 orders I've placed, two have been significantly (over an hour outside of the "scheduled" window) with Support Team saying their records show that the truck left the store late. Ok, that's just not a good excuse. I use this delivery service for our corporate snack and beverage orders for our employees. When things get that late and I have no idea when to expect it, I get the questions and complaints from employees, wondering where fruit/coffee/water etc is. My one (and probably only) experience with Safeway Home Grocery Delivery was very poor. Being that I am not a huge fan of Safeway in general, I only ordered from them because my beloved Peapod is not currently delivering in my area. So I bit the bullet and ordered from Safeway because they gave me free delivery and $6.00 off my order. Convenience: meh--I've had better. As with Peapod, when you check out using Safeway's online service, you have to select a window for delivery. And as with Peapod, the closer to your ordering date you select, and the larger window you let them have, the more you save on delivery. However, unlike Peapod, who lets you know an estimated arrival time by midnight of the delivery day, Safeway does not provide any specifics about when they expect to arrive. I guess they think you should sit at home the whole time waiting for them. As if that wasn't inconvenient enough, the guy ended up being late and did not call to notify me, so not only did I wait during the entire window, I had to wait longer while he was late. Then when he arrived, he did not bring the groceries into the house, but merely stood on the stoop. At the time I thought that maybe that they weren't supposed to and the Peapod delivery guy had just been being extra nice when he asked where I'd like them and even carried them all the way into the kitchen. I later found out that he was supposed to definitely bring them into the house and even into the kitchen if that was what I wanted. Quality: EEK! Me Thinks Not! Of the items I ordered, several were less than a week away from their expiration date (and these are items such as coffee creamer that you don't necessary use up quickly) and one item (Kefir) was already expired by nearly a month! For the meats, they were not as listed on their website, although they were somewhat decent. Pricing: Ok The prices were pretty equal to those I had experienced at Peapod: more expensive than I would pay at the grocery store, but much cheaper than at NetGrocer. Overall, I would recommend grocery delivery as a service, but I would recommend that you go with Peapod rather than Safeway. If Safeway is the only grocery delivery service in your area, then I would suggest that you do not use it unless you are a shut-in and have no choice. read more

I have used this service a few times over the years, with yesterday being my most recent delivery, and have had satisfactory service. It's nice to use in case of emergencies i.e. very busy, broken leg, ill, no car so that you do not need to rely on others (who may tend to get the wrong items) to take over your slack. The couriers have been courteous and prompt, and occasionally you may get a goof like a broken egg or missing / wrong item upon delivery, but once you contact Safeway via e-mail or toll-free #, they make it right immediately and give you full credit. Originally, they used to have a promo for free delivery for $50+ and now it's up to $150+, and you can order lots of bulk items that can tide you over a few weeks of not having to shop (with an except of fresh ones like eggs, milk). Plus, they have a bonus free promo for an item of the week that can help make up for it- desirable items like ice cream with your choice of flavor. Their website is easy to navigate, and be careful to read everything like size instead of relying on a picture. Their shopping cart is also user-friendly. They tend to be out of stock easily since they especially do not sell every single item in their physical store on their website, so they offer you a choice of a substitute of either same item / different size or different item / same size or no substitute. Just be sure to proofread your shopping cart before submitting your final order. They have delivery windows for you to choose: 1 hour, 2 hour, or 4 hour. They prefer that you select the 4-hour because it's 'green'. I like that I can choose the 1-hour on a free delivery promo still. Important to note that they do not accept manufacturer's coupons, but they do include your store shopper card discounts. Even if you do pay a teensy bit more than if you had shopped at your regular grocer or elsewhere, the convenience, free delivery, free item of the week, along with a concierge personal shopper feel makes it financially worthwhile- especially if you are tied up and cannot shop in person for the moment. There apparently is a huge difference in the quality of this service from city to city. I have used them many times and have always been very satisfied. Even if I choose the green option it is rare that the truck does not arrive within the first hour of the four-hour window. Drivers are always really nice. If there has been a problem with an order, and it's been rare, customer service is friendly and gives a credit immediately. You can search to find really good deals. It's a wonderful convenience. UPDATE***** It is now almost one year after I wrote the first review and I've used the service many times. It's still excellent in Tucson. Should things change, I will amend the review. UPDATE***** Only 3 stars now, 4/12/18, because they have raised the food prices through the roof. Time to go back to Fry's or choose Walmart as my delivery. read more

I have been doing Safeway Home Grocery Delivery now for about 5 years now and I love the service. Where I was living at before we lived in an upstairs apartment and my wife hates shopping and I can't stand for long periods of time due to my arthritic knees. Plus hauling everything from the car up the stairs to the apartment I never looked forward to. I order about every week and a half and have never been disappointed. There have been a few times where I was charged something but never got it, but their customer service was on top of it and either credited my account promptly or had items redelivered. The drivers have been friendly and helpful each time they delivered. I feel not tipping them because I feel they earn it especially in the Summer months but they don't accept tips. Their website has gotten better over the years. Sometimes they have the newest stuff and sometimes it takes a while for new stuff to get online. You can even renew your prescriptions online with them to include with your delivery. Pretty much whatever the store sells, you can have it delivered. This service is especially handy during the holidays with all of the food and booze. I totally recommend this service to everyone plus it is nice that I can shop at my leisure at home and have Safeway to the shopping and delivery for me. The prices are fair. Yes you could buy things cheaper at Walmart, Food City or Fry's but they don't deliver and you have to factor the cost in. If I don't have to spend an hour at the store to shop, I'll gladly pay for it. I hope this service stays because it is much appreciated! read more

I have used Safeway Home Grocery Delivery several times in the past year. Most of my experiences have been fine, with the correct groceries delivered within the correct window. The trouble comes when something goes wrong. The customer service is awful. A simple "Hey my delivery was 2 1/2 hours late and three items were damaged" has turned into a two month argument over one of the items in my order. They said I didn't order, I said I did and showed them my email receipt. They said it wasn't the real receipt. I said I was certain that I had ordered and received the item, they said maybe I received it, but I wasn't charged for it. I asked for the their copy of the receipt, which clearly showed that I ordered, paid for, and received the item. When I pointed this out, there was no apology, they just switched to telling me I only had 48 hours to report damaged items, which of course I had done, it's just a month later now and we're still arguing about it. All of the other experiences have been fine, and it's very convenient, but if something goes wrong, good luck getting it resolved. read more
