Understaffed, always only 2 or 3 checkouts ever opened causing long lines and every time I'm there people are blocking the isles waiting. Noticed today the signs have been removed saying "3's a crowd, we'll always open another register". That was a joke!!!! Never can find any staff to help me and never able to find anyone in bakery to get my bread sliced. Shame cause some of the staff are very nice at checkouts. read more

We love Safeway esp on $5 Friday's! But I do have to share my last experience. I bought things to make pork watercress (onion pork oyster sauce watercress & tofu) I tried to purchase local watercress (which is all I use) but per produce worker they haven't had any in about a week. So I resulted in purchasing a mainland brand. When rinsing the watercress ( which was the size of your fist) I rinsed them "throughly" washing off any dirt. After cooking the meat I turned off the stove & added the watercress mixed then added the tofu. Then dinner was served. While serving I found the the beetle took it out & was grossed out!! I called Safeway & the supervisor on duty said to come in the next day & speak with the store manger & ask for a full refund. Came in the next day spoke with Kyle the store manager & after speaking with me for a few minutes, He refunded me my meal. I was very impressed in how I didn't have to fight too much for what had happened & getting a complete refund for everything. Thank u Kyle! My lesson? Always stick with ur gut feeling & if a store doesn't have ur regular brand well drive to another store! BUY LOCAL!! have a blessed day everyone! read more

Was told by the flower cashier had to wait 10 minutes to be rung up because she was making balloons for a customer who was shopping around the store. Not sure why others are giving this store such poor reviews. We were visiting the Kapolei area and stopped by to pick up groceries for the week. The store is clean, well stocked, and a nice shopping environment. Asked for some help in finding a few items and the person helping us was courteous and knowledgeable. We were at the store around 3p in the afternoon and the lines were no longer than our Safeway stores on the mainland. I'd have no concerns if this was my local store for shopping. read more

i cant stand this store! i stopped shopping here a couple months ago and go to the foodland in kapolei which is excellent. #1 constant long lines. customer service at safeway nor do the management care. there is always long lines with unfriendly cashiers and clerks. the last time i was in which was the last time i will set foot in the place (usually only 2 registers open with 10 plus people in each minimum stretching back into the aisles, other employees around but no one cares, they just let it happen). everyone behind and in front of me was also complaining about the constant long lines and that "they are never prepared for customers". several people i know have also complained, nothing changes. #2 out of stocks are a constant problem given the history of this in my person experience and reviews from other people saying the exact same things i don't understand why safeway allows this. i guess safeway is the problem. go to foodland!!!! read more

Even though Safeway is known to be an "upscale" grocery store, this particular store has the worst customer service and phone etiquette on the island. I called 8 times on a Friday morning (about 8am) just to see if the deli was open and ready with their $5 chicken specials. 4 times the deli dept and 3 times the customer service dept hung up on me after i waited over 10 min (sometimes 15min or more) on hold for each call. On the 8th call, i asked for the store manager. I was put on hold 3 times waiting for Preston (it took about 18 mins). When he finally came on, he claims to not hear me and when he could he gave a "what can i do about it" attitude. After all that, my fuatration level was at its peak. I ended up going in anyway right after and there was no line, 5 people that i can see in the deli, but no chicken (tenders or fried chicken) ready. The deli lady had a terrible attitude and said "we are busy right now and cant make the chicken just like that, you will have to wait". Ummmmmm......how come popeyes and churches can do it? read more

Why is the fresh food/ready meals dept always SEVERELY NEGLECTED?!?! every SINGLE time I come, there's no staff and I wait an average of 10-15 mins-- even if I'm the ONLY one in line. Also, they are ALWAYS out of some ingredients (today it's the bread and chicken, last time it was cranberries and the bread....) The only reason I keep coming back is because the sandwiches are so delicious (hence the one star), but I am flabbergasted at how poorly run/kept this area of the store is. I don't understand how this problem has been going on for so long without being addressed (I've been coming here for at least the last 5 or 6 years and encounter issues 9 out of 10 times). been going here for years since it's the most convenient market in the kapolei area, and for a long time it was the only one in the area. over the years with renovations, this place really turned into a nice place to shop. but along with these changes, up went the price as well. but at least i have an assortment of phone numbers of buddies that have club membership that i can punch into the card machine to get discount. groceries, snacks, and poke. i'm there and i never have trouble finding parking because there's soo much of it. read more

I want to say that if you would of asked me 2 months ago about this safeway I would of given 5 stars and amazing! But...after one very unpleasant grocery shopping trip I bumped it down to 2, I go in proably 4 times a week and go to the same clerk(I try at least) she is very nice and very talkative. Well..one day she asks for my DL with my CC. I still had my TX DL so I had to go to the car to get my Mil ID when I get the counter I ask her how come she has never asked for my ID before and she looks at me in my face and lies! She tells me she always asks for my ID, that is what pissed me off. I waited another week came back to the store and was at the checkout and handed my ID to the clerk and she waved it off like she didn't need it! I was livid! To me consistancy is key, be one way and one way all the time! I went in the week after that and same thing..waved off my ID and the clerk was rude! I honestly don't think she gave me all the discounts on my safeway card..that was the most expensive trip I have made to this grocery store. read more

I am a frequent shopper here at this Safeway and have been for years. I must say that today's trip may have been the worst trip I have ever had, in regards to the cashier that rang me up! I didn't even know she had started ringing up my products because she didn't even acknowledge me with a simple "hello." Usually when I come here the cashiers will say "hello. Find everything you were looking for?" Or something to that extent. The cashier, Vivían, proceeded to ring up my products and when she was finished, did not say a word. She didn't tell me my total or anything else. My daughter had run to get something else and I said "my daughter just went to get something real quick." And I smiled at her but the look on her face showed me she was out to kill someone (maybe me, who knows!) My daughter came back and I said "there she is." And instead of taking what my daughter was holding she also stared at my daughter with her evil look. She rang up the rest of the products and still said NOTHING. When the transaction was finished she shoved the receipt in my hand, I said "Thank you!" And again she said ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Just proceeded to help the next customer in line. It was appalling to say the least. Especially considering I have seen this lady before while shopping here and we shop here often. Maybe she was having a bad day but she should still remember to treat her customers how she would like to be treated. I was going to give this review one star but then decided to give two since I have seen this cashier before, being more pleasant than today and thought I'd give her chance. Lately I've been very dissapointed in our Kapolei Safeway. We primarily go there for the great French Baguettes and their speciality cheeses. The last two times the Baguettes were definitely not the same high quality and standard maintained since this Safeway opened. They are most obviously NOT baguettes and not worth buying. We were told that was because the baker was from Hawaii Kai, and he "did them differently." Isn't there supposed to be a standard recipe used by ALL Safeways so they have the same quality of baguette at all stores? This excuse did not make sense. You're either making a baguette or your making a lousy, soft, tasteless substitute. I have purchased baguettes at Safeway in Hawaii and California, and they all had real French Baguettes as the Kapolei Safeway used to. This Kapolei Safeway needs to have better quality control of their baguette recipe/baking. Even the sourdough baguettes have changed into these soft little poor excuses for baguettes. (I have the feeling that the management at the Kapolei Safeway does not know what a baguette is or how it is supposed to look, feel and taste.) As for the cheese, I guess there is just not enough demand for the cheeses they used to stock, such as the English Stilton and the really good Camemberts, among others. read more

They don't seem to care about why they're in business. They are part of a huge chain of companies that should easily compete with others nearby in prices and services but this store seems deserted. It seems others are smarter with their individual store's pricing based on conditions in each store. Example, Safeway'd rather throw out tons of perfectly good produce everyday than marking them down which I know would attract customers to come in and buy other items as well. I love their location but think that if they don't wake up and do something drastic to attract and keep their customers, their days are numbered. Too bad! read more

LOUSY CUSTOMER SERVICE and it's getting worse. I am a rather loyal Safeway customer. I started with the chain in Canada and became part of the loyalty program again when I moved to Hawaii 6 years ago. The Kapolei store is my "home" store and if not weekly, I shop there at least 3 times a month. Over the past year, I have watched the store become less and less customer friendly. This location is consistently understaffed. Whether it's behind the takeout counters (hot foods, deli, bakery, etc), or cashiers and baggers. The manager is an unfriendly, aloof woman who makes it abundantly clear that she's being inconvenienced when having to deal with a customer. Yesterday was exceptionally bad. I arrived at 11:20AM and went to the deli counter --as usual there was no one behind it. There were two employees working the hot bar, a lady making sushi and one staff having a prolonged discussion with a customer about the bread for a platter. Seventeen minutes later, I'm still standing there waiting to be served, having counted 7 other customers who came and left because they didn't have time to wait. By now, the manager was talking to the platter customer and the other employee announced she was on lunch. I am guessing the manager saw the expression on my face and recalled the employee and instructed her to help me. You can imagine how thrilled said employee was-- I then endured an on-going litany of complaints about how she was being cheated on her break time. She had the decency for saying at the end of my order "thank you for waiting". I then proceeded to the bakery counter -- again, no one available in the department. By this point I decided that I'd go Foodland for the rest of my groceries, snagged a few items on my way to the checkout and braced myself when I saw the lines. Note that Safeway has a pledge post that any line with more than 3 people will have a new lane opened. There were three lanes, 2 for express (15 items or less) and one regular lane. I chose regular as I had 17 items. There were 8 people ahead of me and each of the "Express" lanes had 12-15, extending into the grocery aisles. My line came to a complete halt when one customer tried to pay partly cash and partly credit. The cashier managed to freeze up the computer and all hell broke loose. It was 27 minutes before I was finally able to check out. The frazzled bagger asked if I needed help to my car and I asked, "if I did, who would do it?" She smiled shyly and say "Oh yeah, sorry." Behind me, people were literally yelling from the line "Open another lane", "What about your pledge?", the manager simply walked past and went to her office. Here's a little tidbit: "leaders eat last". Good performance is driven by good leadership. Kapolei Safeway, take a lesson from the staff at the Waimalu store. Figure out what "customer service" and "customer satisfaction" mean. That store is older, smaller and doesn't have all the products your store does, but wow are the staff friendly, helpful and customer oriented. That's going to become my go-to store on the way home from work, from now on. Better yet....visit Foodland and take a lesson from them. read more

Today I was 6th of 9 people in line before they opened another register. They have those 3's a crowd posters hung up just to taunt us. This was a Lucky store slogan before Albertson's took them over. At least Lucky honored their statement. The store managers must not know or care what day is payday, or they would staff adequately.. The best thing about Safeway is that every store has the same layout. The add-ons, when they have them, like pharmacy, bank, Starbucks are always in the same locations. It is like a clone of the Vons I shopped at for years. I suppose I'll keep going there because of their location. read more

Terrible customer service. Long lines, don't bother speaking to managers, they don't really care. I used to shop here 5 years ago, when they were the only game in town. But now we have Foodland, Costco, and WalMart, all with lower prices. Even WalMart gives better customer service that Safeway in Kapolei. Their Deli is the worst, always out of stock. The deli workers are frustrated, you can tell, because of customer complaints. Management doesn't support the deli workers or the customers with their issues. Foodland is nearby and has no problem keeping their deli stocked. read more

Rude and Dismissive (abridged). Safeway Kapolei's Customer Service Counter worker (frumpy middle aged Asian woman) was rude, dismissive, and passive aggressive. When I pointed out her behavior, she smiled for the first time and condescendingly responded, "Thank You." When I pointed out that she was rude from the beginning, she laughed and snapped, "Sorry", and when I asked to speak to her manager, she shrugged dismissively and said, "Sure", confident that her behavior would be backed by a manger arrived but stated he didn't understand the passive-aggressive behavior of saying one thing, but in a tone and manner that meant something entirely different. read more

I just spent over $300. I ended up bagging my own groceries. Mele was my cashier. I said "hi" to her, she said nothing. Mele did not make eye contact or anything. Just started ringing my groceries. She just kept scanning and scanning my items until there was a pile and she had to bag them before continuing. She just started putting the groceries in whatever bag she felt like. She squeezed the chips into a bag with heavy items which crushed them . She didn't put the frozen/cold food that needed to be kept cold together, they were just in a bag with other items. After Mele did this with a few of my bags, I just started bagging my own groceries. Mele just continued scanning and said nothing. This is not the first time I have had Mele as my cashier. Last time she was the same way. She seems very irritated. Sighs and makes faces while she is scanning. Doesn't speak to you. She doesn't say thank you or have a good day. I shouldn't have to bag my own groceries when I shop here. I shop at Safeway Kapolei on a regular basis. This is my store of choice. I like that I can find what I need in one store. I have NEVER had any of the employees do this. I know many of them by name. Maybe this is NOT the place for Mele to be working. As I read the reviews I see that I am not the only who has had a bad experience with Mele. I think it's time someone speaks to her about her poor customer service. Time to train her or replace her. this is only a review on the deli (ready made food) section... purchased the boiled peanuts & seasoned soybeans - both old. the soybeans were a greyish brown color & the boiled peanuts were extremely salty with a weird texture. didn't serve the soybeans & threw away the peanuts after eating one. next time will go to foodland. i know they have a better bakery, so the deli should be great too. read more
