Safeway has implemented a two tier discount system that discriminate against senior citizens and people with cognitive disabilities with an online app to get a huge discount. It's price gouging now it's worse. It's almost doubled the price to not participate. It's illegal it's unethical and it's discriminatory to have a two tier discount system. A bag of cheese will be $10.99 without the discount and $3.99 with the discount. This is questionably unethical. read more

Safeway has cut staff down to less-than-the-minimum causing inventory on shelves to run out regularly on items I buy on every visit. Water is one and I'm not going to shop there anymore for this reason alone. This bogus excuse for cutting paper bags with handles is clearly a cost-cutting measure and is intolerable. Called their number ahead of time. Trying any department specifically never gets answered and you are cycled back to beginning of the robo menu. The menu says press 8 for customer service or just stay on the line and automatically get to customer service. I pressed 8 and it said it did not receive a response from me. Called again and let it automatically go to customer service but it just starts at the beginning of the menu cycle. Trying Chat at the website, you get a virtual chat bot that does not answer the question you ask. The new thing is boasting "AI" but it does not understand any question you ask. Bought a custom cake last minute for my wife's birthday. The manager of the Bakery Ruben was so amazing. They were able to make my cake super last minute within a few hours. I'm so excited to suprise my wife with it. Ruben went above and beyond because he asked if I wanted the pink forsting contrasting colors so it can really stand out. the pictures I attached include the cake how I picked it up and the extra decorations I attached afterwards myself. Most of the time they have like 1 or 2 checkers and you have to wait in line forever. Today was fun. They hire odd people. The person working the check stand has made me feel awkward before, but today was a new level. He sang two songs related to my purchase. What am I supposed to do during that? Yesterday I went inside and got some earplugs, bananas and refilled my 1g water bottle. It was late so I was glad they were open but the kicker was when I went out to my car. A man wearing all black with curly long hair and glasses came over to my car and pounded on the window! I rolled down the window and asked him WTF do you want?! He tells me to get moving and to leave the parking lot because "I'm security" So what! Go find someone else to pick on bro. This Safeway can be hit or miss. The ready to go dinners are great, and I love the chicken alfredo. Their sandwiches are also great. Love the turkey and roast beef. The bakery makes giant cookies. The chocolate chip and double chocolate are my favorites. Produce section can be hit or miss. Usually the weekday shift turns over the produce quickly so you get fresh items. The weekend shifts though leave something to be desired as you can get some nasty produce. Self checkout is the way to go, as I have run into grumpy checkers here more than once. read more

This is a review of their delivery service originating from this store. I ordered delivery online for a friend who had her mom pass away, who couldn't get to the store. She was down to literally no food. I placed a large order and the driver showed up when they should have but only with the non-refrigerated/non-freezer items. Something is better than nothing and it's almost an understandable mistake. So I called customer service and had them look for the rest of the order. They confirmed they found it and would send it back out. And they did the next day. But... Only 4 of the 23 missing items were delivered. I got back on the phone with customer service to understand what was going on but ended up just giving up and asking for a refund for the rest. It was over $100 of merchandise left undelivered. At this point, I don't understand how this is happening but I was tired of playing this game and asked for a refund of the outstanding items. I'm going to place an order from another source and I'm never ordering from safeway.com ever again. Not everyone who orders delivery is being lazy. Some members of the community really can't get out of the house to go to the store for various reasons (health, grief, etc.) and/or doesn't live near a bus stop if they can't drive. I hope that management reads this and gets it together so this never happens to anyone else. I was sent a checklist when I placed my order. Aren't the drivers issued the same checklists to make sure that they have complete orders before heading out? If not, that would be an easy fix. read more

The dude, older niece and I came to this Safeway in Santa Cruz on June 18th. We stopped in as my two older sisters and my bro in law and the little niece wanted food and snacks but wanted to settle in the hotel so we decided to go! I always enjoy any outings with my nieces with one or both and shopping is always a lot of fun! Since the little niece didn't come we had the older niece pick out the snacks for them and even a special treat! Shhhh! The niece was such a good helper of helping us find drinks her mom and other auntie likes. She helped me roll the cart snd overall great shopping experience. The dude is always all over the place when it comes to grocery shopping. I like to get in and get out so I can enjoy my vacation! The Safeway has so much alcohol and wine and drinks it was hard to choose from! I had my niece go hang out with uncle B while I picked out wine and drinks for the family as I didn't want the niece bumping into something and scattering all over the place. Very organized and clean. They have your typical deli selections, bakeries, fresh foods, fruits and veggies, ice cream/frozen items and unique finds as well! We were all overwhelmed by the thorough selections of the goods they had! Staff was very friendly and a little busy inside with locals and vacationers shopping like us. Since the older niece was so pleasant and helpful we let her play those prize games that take your money! She took defeat well and we tried it one more time and she won the unicorn as pictured! We all cheered with excited and proud! It was so cute because back to the car she delicately put a seat belt around The Unicorn! Cutest thing ever! My son is a student at UCSC and when moving him in last week, we came shopping here. The lines were ridiculous! We stood in line for almost 15 minutes and only two carts went through the checker in our line. Finally, they opened another lane and we were then out quickly. I purchased the grocery delivery service, since my son doesn't have a car. I ordered food online and the first delivery window was 2 days later (Saturday 5-9 PM window). I didn't realize there was a substitution turn off. Of the 10 items I ordered, 6 were substituted! One wasn't even close to the original order I asked for and was $5.00 more. So, today we received a message stating he should expect his delivery 6:05-6:15 PM. My son was waiting to eat since it was coming early. It was just delivered after 8:00 PM. Why give a 10 minute window, after the original 4 hour window, and not adhere to it? What a horrible first experience! If this happens again, I will cancel. read more

While shopping spent a half hour looking myself, then someone came late helped me look for ten minutes. "They should be on isle ten" then sent me to customer service who said they haven't had them in over a year and that there must have been confusion when I called because the app said they had them available to ship (apparently whoever answers the phone missed this in training). The deli specializes in having an extremely rude and inattentive attitude. I'm unsure how badly they get paid, but it's pretty clear they don't get training on being efficient or customer service based skills either. It shouldn't take longer than 2-4 minutes to make a box lunch but it takes almost twice as long, and to get a sandwich or burrito takes almost 15-20 on a good day. It's the same at every other safeway deli in town, I genuinely appreciate the handful of times it's been someone that looked happy to be there and attend me... It's a Safeway. It's pretty much the same as any other Safeway I've been in. They usually have most things in stock and the prices and quality of items don't change all that much. The self chekout is buggy and often not taking cash or not taking credit card or both. Sometimes it overcharges you or accuses you of stealing, or something won't ring up, or you rang something up that needs to be counted, so you have to wait until you can get the one employee to come over and fix it. I'd rather just wait in line than skip that hassle but the checkout aisle lines can get super long, especially when the self checkout is down (see picture) The reason this gets 3 stars instead of 2 is because it's the ONLY place you can get food in the ENTIRE westside after 11pm. (There's also the taqueria, but I tend to think of it as part of Safeway because it's next door. Also that's only open til 11:45. Here we go again. Safeway on Mission 10/30/2024 at 10.30 am. I said before every shoppers should check their receipts before go out. 99.99 % always extra charge or missed price tags. Don't let the big name out there to fool you even for 1 penny. It's a principle. I shopped this Safeway almost 40 years, again $ 5.00 overcharge, 1st checker could not figure out, 2nd she called manager to straight it out, that manager also could not get it done. Finally some trick either from meat department or Safeway system. After I schooled them out because I am a math master, and their agreed I was so right. That was not checker or manager fault, but from Safeway's system, or from headquarters or from IT department " created for rip off " customers. $5 bucks from 1 customer likes me and how many customers a days ? and how much money their ( Safeway ) get from cheating system.
