I write this review after having shopped there now for over 10 years. My usual grocery shopping tour includes New Leaf, Whole foods, and Shoppers Corner, and over the years I invariably found that, of what they carry, Shoppers corner consistently has the highest quality. Period. A wonderful meat/fish department, very accommodating to whatever personal request I might have, always the best bell peppers, grapes, citrus, apples, shallots, and the list goes on. Often enough they carry high quality items when the other stores don't even have it at the moment. It's a comparatively small place but they sure have everything I want and need, and it has established itself as my most favorite and quality-reliable shop. We popped in here for some road trip snacks on a recommendation from a local. A cute neighborhood grocery store with ample parking in the back. They had a terrific selection of wine and nuts/other goodies to make your own trail mix (although they also sold trail mix there). We picked up some fruit for the road too! We don't live in Santa Cruz, but had browsed in a magazine that morning that this was the top rated grocery store and had to check it out. They are known for their butcher/meat station and wine collection. The produce and food selection is more than sufficient for shopping as well. One could spend hours browsing the wine collection. I felt like I was in a bookstore there's labels and descriptions of almost all the wines so it's very helpful guidance. Everyone who worked there was also very helpful and friendly. Pretty standard market in Santa Cruz. Nothing incredibly stand-out aside from some Australian wagyu grass-fed NY strip steaks. Going to cook one up tomorrow to see how it compares to the other many varieties of beef that I've had from a number of shops in California. Been here a couple times, and the three things that really stand out to me are the fresh meats in the back, the endless options for wine, and the yummy cookies (specifically from Santa Cruz's Pacific Cookie Company!). We stopped by here this past weekend before camping, and picked up a few items, and they had everything we needed, including utensils, paper products, matches, and a bottle of red wine we decided to try (Dragon Slayer) which was pretty good. They have a parking lot as well as free street parking right outside. And the service here is friendly and efficient. Even when it looks like there's a line, it goes by quickly. This is my favorite grocery store in the whole world and I don't even live in Santa Cruz! My son does though, and I stop here multiple times every time I'm in town. Top notch produce, a good seafood section, excellent butcher and wonderful wines. It's so jam packed full of deliciousness and yet easy to navigate. This is a great store! I wish I had more time to shop here, but my son and husband were waiting in the car, ready to drive back home which takes about 1.5 hours. So I didn't have the luxury of time to browse but I found the exact items I needed. We were in Santa Cruz for the long weekend. We did all the fun things, and my friend was watching our dog back at home. I wanted to get her something special, something uniquely Santa Cruz. I went into a few stores, but always came out empty. I bought her local, honey, local chocolate, and some local jam. It was absolutely perfect! Next time I'm in town, I'll make a note to come back here. Came in here for a few provisions one day while on vacation. Wow.. super expensive, and a bit inflated in price in general for specifically local items. I didn't see a whole lot of specialty items in the deli section, they did have a decent meat selection at their butchers corner but again this is a spot I came as a traveler to the city and needed just some basic stuff to tide me over and wasn't able to get out of there without spending $70 for one bag not exactly a bargain spot. read more

I'd love to shop here more, but they don't update their website to show their current specials. It's a bit out of my way, and I only go when I need something that I know they carry. Never answered my email that I sent a month ago to ask them about it. Butcher counter is fantastic, everyone is helpful and they share their tips for cooking your protein choice just right. Check the freezers for a pretty good selection of raw frozen items for those that feed their pets a raw &/or home-cooked diet. read more

Ive been a customer of Shoppers Corner for decades. We regularly buy our meat there. Recently I bought 4 bone-in ribeye steaks for about $78. Of the two we've had, one was fairly tough but edible. The other was like eating an old shoe - so tough you couldn't chew it. I feel like I've been ripped off at that price I paid. Doubtful I'll be buying steaks there again. read more

Shopper's Corner routinely steals from its customers by having one price at the point of sale, and a higher price at the register. I brought this to their attention 3 times. They just don't care about their own regular customers, or they would have fixed the problem immediately. They refused to honor the clearly posted price, insisting on charging me a dollar more. It is dishonest, rude, immoral and contemptuous of its own customers to treat them this way. A complaint has been filed with the Better Business Bureau. So lame! My wife and I have been going to Shoppers since 1977. Not frequently, their prices are absurd and they are not helpful, but we buy turkeys, hams and roasts for holidays. Yesterday, 11/9/20, my wife ordered a turkey for Thanksgiving. She also bought some snapper for dinner. When we opened it, it was grey and smelled like ammonia. Today,11/10/20, I returned to give the butchers the opportunity to replace it with something fresh. They told me that it was perfectly fresh, they knew more about it than me and they wouldn't replace it. I got my money back and we cancelled our turkey order. It would have been so easy to say,"sorry about that, how can we fix this?" Instead they were arrogantly disrespectful. I guess they don't need our business anymore. read more

This is one of my neighborhood grocery stores. I love that it is locally owned and has a great selection of many things - wine, cheese, veggies etc. Unaware that they closed at 8pm, I arrived at 7:45 the other night. The fish options had all been put away. I asked one of the employees behind the counter if I he could possibly retrieve two crabs for me He happily obliged. In addition, he took another 10 minutes to crack them for me. I know everyone was ready to go home and as a last-minute straggler I would've understood if he had shown the least bit of reluctance, but he didn't. He was pleasant and helpful throughout. *In contrast, I had stopped by Whole Foods earlier in the day and asked for crab, but they refused to crack them. "We don't do that anymore," the dude said, with no further explanation. All the more reason to shop at Shoppers! read more

Great local boutique grocery store... specialty items, super fresh produce, best butcher shop and seafood in town. Their marinated meats ( especially their teriyaki skirt steak) are even better than Freedom Meat Locker in Watsonville. Expensive but a treat my family looks forward to on holidays. Tiny aisles, wood floors, cute, pricey, kind of niche. I only give 4 stars because it's a small store and they don't have that big of a selection, so I usually also have to go to Safeway or Staff of Life, but I love the place. read more

How could I have not written a review for this place! You always see their ads in the Good Times and other local publications and you see the clientele for this particular store is anywhere from local gourmet chefs to your every day average joe (not to be confused with joe the plumber ;) ). They have fresh produce like avocados that are actually ripe and ready to eat instead of hard and need a few days in a paper bag to soften. Their tomatos are a beautiful red.. My dad's birthday is in a few days so on the menu for today was 1) BLT with Swiss Cheese and Avocado on Whole Wheat 2) homemade mango sorbet yep found everything I needed here it is reasonably priced... folks are super friendly AND It is right near a local flower shop and The Buttery.... with all of those combined I had ingredients for a killer lunch for a special guy read more

Amazing service by the cashier (Samantha ) With the businesses of the store and the noise level at the time. She acknowledged the fact that she couldn't hear me. with the face diapers we wear it makes it difficult. Yet she treated me as if I was the only one in the store. Eye contact. Conversation and everything. Totally on cue. I might be physically challenged with a tbi on the side but Samantha overlooked it and needs recognition. I'm old school and love tru customer service. I didn't even think of coming in here or even giving it a second thought, but after staring at it from my corner seat inside The Buttery, I figured, why not (yes the pestering from the bf also helped... why he had a desire to visit a supermarket I'm really unsure ...) Once inside, of course this is probably their hook, but the tall shelves of wine on sale immediately caught my eye. Wow what variety! This is something that I would have expected perhaps from Draegers or some other high-end supermarket but unexpectedly from this unassuming shop in the corner I found wine heaven. They even had a 2004 Silver Oaks vintage ... if only I had $199 with me to spend on wine :) This store is definitely small and since I didn't buy much else except almost a 1/2 case of wine, I cannot speak for their produce or other portions but their wine selection is top notch and I'm so happy I visited despite having now spent hundreds on wine. I'm with Steven W on the pricing out of the middle class, and even upper middle class. $10 for a few ounces of gourmet chocolate? Yeah, I guess we're at a gourmet health food store. However, my bf, who was a banana slug, brought me here because he loved going here back when he lived in SC, and I must admit, this has some nice stuff. Spelt, avocado honey, dark chocolate chips, a huge wine selection, fresh meats... oh, and his favorite, the 3-lb fruity pies that he loves. You'll also see mainstream grocery items right next to health/specialty items, like the Oreos next to the Fig Newman cookies. Steve's next to Ben & Jerry's and Haagen Dazs. A cut above Trader Joe's,Sprouts, and Whole Foods, although prices mimic WF's. While I would rate this a three and a half-star place, my bf would rate it a four-and-a-half star place. read more

They will do anything for you. Cube a pork shoulder for chili verde? No problem. Incredible meat selection. Always fresh. And friendly butchers. Not like that angry bearded guy in the meat department at New Leaf on 41st. The cheese selection is out of this world. I can always find my St Andre, or my Huntsman, it's all good. Great selection of chocolates, right by the check out line, so you can impulse buy while you wait in line. Pick your sweets quick though, because you usually don't have to wait in line too long. A neighborhood gem. Shoppers has one of the best wine selections in the county, a great butcher / meat counter, and still manages to pack in a great selection of beer, cheese, produce and other groceries into a small space. I've been shopping here for many years and they have maintained a great and very friendly shopping environment. I've read reviews about how Shoppers is expensive, but local studies in the (kinda sad) local paper and personal research show that the grocery places in the area (Shoppers, Staff, and Safeway) are all about the same price for staples. Sure, if you are a club member or target sales, you can get a better deal here or there. Shoppers, however, is consistently fair on price and excellent in quality. Personally, I won't set foot in the local Safeway and have mixed opinions about Staff of Life. Where Shoppers really shines is in customer service. Nearly everyone is friendly and helpful. Every now and then, there is a cashier or two that will stand out not only for their service, but also stepping up the banter and interaction. This leads to fun situations like a look of "you again?" followed by a big smile as you are about to get teased for showing back up for forgetting something. Or, looking at the wine selection and then realizing someone is looking over your shoulder and it's one of the cashiers coming over to tease you. They are a place with a personality and great interactions. Even with the personalities, they know what they are doing. If there is a particular wine, cheese, beer or other item you are looking for, their staff will know where to find it, suggest a good alternative, or if it is something they can get order it for you. With Whole Foods coming into town, Shoppers did a bit of upgrading -- a wider selection of marinated meats, new freezers/coolers, a few other small tweaks. But it still remains friendly with an amazing selection at reasonable prices. read more
