This the better of the two safeway's in santa cruz albeit one that people love to hate. They have their own striplandia parking lot shared with a dozen other businesses which makes it quite busy. Patience is required when navigating the lot at times as it can be quite busy. Regardless there will always be parking in there somewhere. Bicycling here is quite easy but care should be taken to secure your stuff. Bike theft is a real problem in santa cruz and a high quality lock is a must. Preferentially multiple locks. This is a very large, clean, well lit, and modern store. It carries pretty much everything you'll need if not certain specialty items that you may want. No paneer, durian, or yeast cakes for example, but anything that isn't a rare gourmet/specialty item can be had here. They have a starbucks, and a extensive deli section with a lot of hot prepared food to go(this includes samosas, but don't bother as they are truly utterly horrible. go for the fried rice or egg rolls instead), a bakery counter with great cakes (that can be personalized), balloons and flowers, a meat counter, pet food, nappies, a red box, cat litter, money services, a bank, toilet stuff, amazon lockers, and kitchen gear in addition to an really very large produce and dry goods sections(this includes beer, wine and liquor). Pretty much a one stop shop which is really handy along with being open 24 hours. It's not all good news-they bathrooms are public and are under siege by the unsavory types you'll see camping in any open area. don't use the bathrooms here. Safeway staff try hard but the bathrooms are in a constant state of disorder. The pricing is not always as fair as you'd want. The sales are decent-especially the one day sales on Friday-and if your'e going to be in California for more then a day get one of their free membership cards-it'll really help with the pricing as will checking the online site for coupon pricing. Due to some macroeconomic issues they have a real hard time getting this store abundantly staffed. That combined with the popularity of this place will mean there will be lines for check out a lot of the time. I really don't mind but some folks get really excited that they have to wait TEN WHOLE MINUTES to check out and sometimes you have to BAG YOUR OWN GROCERIES! The horror! Ah well. Such is life and if that's the only thing that you have going wrong in your day, you're doing fine. So, overall an almost perfect modern one stop shopping spot. read more

Curb side pick up sucks here. There is only one spot designated for online orders and it's never open cause anyone and everyone feels the need to park there. Because I have to park away from the spot I can't see the number to call and getting through to a living human takes soo long and then trying to describe whee I am parked is near impossible. Safeway to me is really the same everywhere. The thing I love about this Safeway is that they have free samples sometimes by the deli! They'll cut up pieces of their sandwiches and put them on the counter for you to try :). One time I left my wallet on the counter and the cashier came out running to give it back to me. So nice!! Talk about the cream of the crop here. This Safeway is one of the best I've ever been to. And I've visited both Safeway's & Von's all over California. The store is very large and is beautifully maintained. You can tell this store is one of the newer designed stores. It has a rustic charm to it. Each department is fully stocked, when I say fully stocked. I mean the produce section is large and is full of both organic and non-organic produce -- wall to wall. The deli has a large selection of cheeses, that is complimented with crackers, jams, and deli meats. The alcohol section is a number of large rows, that's fully stocked with wine, beer, and hard liquor. Local favorites are among these alcoholic favorites. The Starbucks here is conveniently located at front right- front of the store. It's seen from two of three entrances. They have a large area of tables and chairs -- that offers free wifi. This store flows so well and offers many options for locals and tourists that are traveling through the PCH. As much as I love this store, I had to give 4 stars because with the large store and the thousands of customers they help a day, there should be more cashiers. When I went, which was a Saturday afternoon there were only about 4 checkers open and self-checkout. All operating cash registers should be open to make the experience that much better. Either way, this Safeway is clean, accommodating, and highly recommended. read more

3.5 stars actually... Besides Costco and Target, this particular Safeway has been my go-to Safeway during my college times for daily necessities. I've come here so many times that when I go to a Safeway in the Bay, I get so confused on where to find certain items. There's three entrances; I usually go through the middle one (to the left of Starbucks when you're facing the grocery store). From right to left (from what I remember) it's: bakery to Starbucks to deli to alcohol to chips to frozen items to soda to baby stuff to hygienic to products to variety of foods depending on ethnicity to to the veggies section. The meat department is in the back. Just a heads up that the meat department closes around 5PM or so, but the store itself is open 24 hours (holllaaa!) This Safeway is pretty big and I feel like I can always find what I need; for some reason the logistics of this store really sticks to me. -1 star because they never have enough workers in the evening/ late nights to cashier... Sometimes I'll be waiting anywhere between 10-20 minutes for some odd reason. -0.5 star because sometimes when I ask a worker restocking the shelves where certain items are, they're just as clueless as I am at times... Pretty annoying. But maybe it's because it isn't there department, but I would think that working at a grocery store you'd venture around, right? read more

Picked up my groceries I ordered at drive up and go. Lisa was extremely helpful and thorough on the order. One item was missing and she gladly went back and grabbed the missing item for me. We went here yesterday to grab a few grocery items and get sandwiches. We were able go get our fruit, chips and a bit of cheese with no problem. Cashier was nice and friendly. Now the irritation sets in with the deli. First of all they want almost $20 for one large sandwich. Never again! We just wanted to get to our destination so paid it the amount. The person who waited on us was SLOW AF. We ordered two large sandwiches and it took 20-25 minutes to make them both. Not kidding!!! Neither were heated up either. She had a heavy accent in addition to a mask which made communication even harder. I had to just point out what I wanted. They was a line forming behind us Halfway through. As she finally was finishing it grew and another person appeared to help out. Sandwiches were ok. Stay away from that deli where sandwiches were made. Needs improvement. 1. Open the darn door by Starbucks by 7 AM!! When it's raining have to walk all the way to the front. So annoying. 2. Parking spaces are WAY TOO small. 3. Bathrooms are dirty and need maintenance. 4. Stop being so cheap and hire more checkers, most of the time less than half are being used and it's gets super busy there. If i could choose zero i would. Every time i go in the hot bar section employees are super slow and even though other ladies doesn't have customers like those on the asian section or the sandwiches they don't help and don't care how busy the hot bar section is. And when it's your turn they don't even care too much. I ordered 4pcs of chicken and when it was time to pay, just before she did the register and saw my money which was $50 she right away told me she doesn't have change. She can't take my $50 even though she hasn't checked their money in the cash register. Whats more stupid is her co worker said, "we have change." And still argued with her even without checking! Back in the day, one of the reasons they invented stores was to keep animals away from the products. I was in this Safeway this evening trying to buy a handful of items. While perusing the coffee, I look to my right and lo and behold there is a dog wrestling with their owner in the middle of the aisle. I could see the dog hair flying all over the products. And it wasn't a dog for helping a human, it was 2 privileged assholes that couldn't be bothered to stay outside with their animal. This is the same place that offers fresh food for consumption. First of all, and forever, the inability to provide enough check out stations for customers is a major drawback. And to me, second if not tied with first, the amount of bottled liquids on shelves, stacked in corners to the ceiling and screening the front store windows is obscene. Just the emptied containers from these products could take up a large section of the local dump. There is NO call for so many liquid/glass containers filling up one store and more importantly, this store's displays offer a great example of how we increase our footprint on the planet. Safeway CEO's must take a stand to reduce this inventory and demand that bottled beverage companies stop marketing smaller versions of same in plastic or glass containers. Sorry but I don't think they're "doing their best" during COVID or keeping people safe. The aisles are soooo narrow. I dread going there. Why can't they widen the aisles?? It's like they can't be bothered. Really annoying to try to shop and stay away from people zooming past you or hovering behind you. The long check out lines move so slowly and begin IN the aisles, so it's impossible to avoid people in the lines and people trying to shop those aisles. I went in late at night just to grab quick snacks. While I was there I noticed their customer service was terrible. I don't know why, but as I was being rung up my cashier was very rude to me and to the girls behind me, but he was not rude to the gentlemen that paid right before me. He didn't offer me a bag, he did not speak a word to me, and he even picked up one of my food items, looked at it and continued to slam it on the counter. I don't understand his problem but it seemed as though he was just being rude to both the girls and women. He was an older gentlemen, with a beard and glasses, who was listening to rock music. I really do not understand why he was so rude and why he had to act in an unnecessary and uncomfortable manner. I come in to buy groceries, not to feel uncomfortable. Absolutely worst Safeway I have ever been to. Not only are most of the employees incompetent, but it's extremely overcrowded and poorly managed. 3 deli workers continued to skip my boyfriend and I three times in a row, I assume because we were the youngest people there. Finally after I was helped I asked for two samples, everyone else got normal sample cups but she gave me my samples on the lid of something not even separated... put coleslaw on top of the chicken salad I was trying to taste.. I also was trying to buy two pounds of sandwich meat--- going to new leaf now. Seriously Safeway, get it together. One of my girlfriends asked to speak to the manager recently, and this kid working the register in a hoodie said he was the manager-- total bullshit. I've spoken to the manager before. The remodeled store looks great, the staff is friendly, BUT they are perennially under-staffed. Be prepared for long lines at the checkout. Vegetables are tasteless. Milk Cartons are often leaky. This Safeway in PARTICULAR , ( most Safeway markets are great) is pretty bad. I am so sick of their ridiculously long checkout lines ! Hire some checkers , you are obviously doing brisk business ! Always takes too long to shop here, always. The lines are long and slow. 3/4 of the staff checking you out at the registers are painfully slow to watch and totally inefficient, and they never have enough lanes open. You will wait in line for a long time even to buy a couple of things any time of day or night. Too bad, its one of the largest newest store around. I skip it and shop other places with a smaller selection and go to multiple places just to avoid the frustration of watching them check people out. Will not be returning to this Safeway location. I had my cart and groceries with me on isle 7. A male employee proceeds to move my cart, and says "I can help whoever is next over here." At first I'm thinking maybe he is going to help me with my groceries or something. Boy was I wrong. I then told him, "You need to say excuse me." The male employee then says, "No I don't." At this point I acted like I didn't hear him because I didn't wanna look like an angry black woman (very white town) so I spoke to the manager on duty and told her what happened. FINALLY it's here! i have never understood how santa cruz has survived with such run-down grocery stores, and within the past few months we have gotten a new New Leaf, Whole Foods, and now Safeway. it's in the same lot as the previous one, and parking is currently among the most impossible of tasks since the lot is still under construction. from what i understand, they will eventually knock down the old safeway and make that parking as well. plus it's supposed to be open 24/7. a brief skim through the store presents: -a huuuge wine collection, with a new separate room for the expen$$$ive stuff -a starbucks, and a rather large lounge area to sit in -a gelato station -tons of choices for everything! i read an article a while ago saying that this was one of the few safeways in the country that is eco friendly and solar efficient. that's a good way to win the hearts of santa cruzians. i wish this had been here a looong time ago, saaaay, 4 years ago when i first started college? that would have been nice! i probably wouldnt have eaten so many cup-o-noodles if i had a grocery store like this. read more

After the remodel (happened last summer), this is the best safeway I have ever been to! 1.) Giant size store, one stop for grocery and household items 2.) Yummy gelato section 3.) Great bakery and sandwich sections (freshly made) 4.) Huge wine sections section 5.) Chinesefood, and sushi sections. (for you asian ppl in SC) 6.) Excellent starbucks stand with tables and free wifi network for people that need to do work 7/) Self check out, efficient for people that only get one or two things ........ .... .. and the list goes on....... Generally, Safeways have slightly (ever so slightly) higher prices than your average grocery store but when it comes to sales, Safeway's got it down. $5.00 weekend deals are the best! Chicken, wings, shredded/block cheese, deli salami, deli turkey breast, etc... all for just $5 on Friday through Sunday. 2. Get Just4U. I save at least $5 ish dollars on the things I purchase most just by pushing a few buttons on my smart phone. 3. Buy Safeway brand products (maybe except medicine)! Almost the same quality of name-brands, but half as much! Saves $$$ More Pros: - Staff is friendly! - Starbucks inside. - Nice selection of beer and wine. Almost always on sale! - Self checkout lines! They will card you for alcohol. They don't check for ID's on credit cards, thus allowing me to use my mom's card without her being there. Convenient! - For smokers, they have bulk packs (20) cigarettes for $60.00 per bulk pack. (boyfriend smokes) - Particularly large gourmet cheese station. I don't know why. Cons: - Every night past 10 or 11 pm, college kids are buying tons of beer and alcohol. Oh Safeway- the filler market for when I needed my cheap cabbage and ramen and Activia yogurt (they taste creamy!) all no nitrates lunchmeat when these items are on sale. I might miss how cheap and great Shopper's Corner was- but they dont carry top ramen like Safeway carries top ramen. I still carry my safeway card- and this safeway's consistent- and not too cold, new, over bourge'd or ghetto like the ones in the city here. Meh, it's alright. The store is clean and prices decent-ish, but the produce quality is hit or miss. There is always parking in the huge lot for the shopping center, and as much as people like to complain, I've yet to circle the whole thing without finding parking. I can't personally speak to the pharmacy as I haven't used it, but the liquor/beer selection is pretty dang good for a Safeway. I wouldn't come if you're in a rush though... read more
