Unfortunately, this Safeway has gone downhill badly over the last 6 years that we have lived close to it. They are often out of merchandise. When we specifically asked customer service why an item that is listed on Safeway's website suddenly was no longer on the shelf, we never received a call back. This is an important product to us, yet no one seemed to care. I now will only shop there in an emergency. Too bad. So close to us. read more

Came here on New Years Eve after a long drive on CA-12W from St. Helena. Everything was well organized and the staff was very helpful. I'm writing this review because of the exemplary customer service of a cashier named Roberta. She was definitely a great person to have interacted with after such a daunting experience on a dark and narrow freeway. I mean, I was tired and cranky and so was my friend! She seemed to have made it all better in the 2 minutes and 56 seconds we were being rung up. I was so impressed at how nice and friendly she was, I kept the receipt just to make sure I wrote the review for the correct Safeway location and employee. Keep up the great work, Roberta! read more

I occasionally come in for a deli sandwich or a breakfast burrito, and unfortunately I've found the some of the employees unmotivated and lack any desire to provide customer service, they seem annoyed with having to stop there work in the deli and make a sandwich or burrito for a customer, and a couple time my burritto has been under cooked, first time I didn't say anything but when it happened two more times I felt like I needed to say something, besides this area of the store, I think the the store is pretty good. read more

The front-line manager Katherine is a treasure who calls people by name and has so much patience with people. I was nearby when she was helping an elderly man who hadn't bathed in awhile and her smile never faltered. She treated him with respect and kindness despite his condition. I think she and several other long time staff are to be commended for their patience when working with the public. read more

I would give this store zero stars if that were an option. I rarely shop here, even though it is walking distance from my home. That said, I have been here on two occasions during the past 4 weeks. On each visit, the staff was rude. I'm talking every single employee I encountered during my visit. From the produce department to the deli and right on through the check out. Every employee looks miserable and is sure to pass it along to the customers. On the first trip, the check out guy offered the 2 customers ahead of me $10 off with their order. He said it was the last day of this offer. Ok, it's my turn. I spent as much with my order as the previous 2 customers. I bagged my own groceries. When it came time to pay, I asked if my order qualified for the $10 refund. He gave me the dirtiest look and literally threw a $10 bill at me. Again today, in the check out line. The checker was clearly distracted. He wanted to go on break and couldn't find anyone to relieve him. Again, I bagged my own groceries. I asked him to please pass my food down so I could finish bagging my own groceries. After a big sigh, he tossed the containers of blueberries and raspberries at me. There on Thursday. There were more than 15 people in 3 lines. Called the store to speak with a manager - I have now been in line 20 minutes - I was told there was no manager on the floor. It is 3pm in the afternoon. The staff was apologetic but it doesn't change anything as this is not the first time - just the worst time. I pay high prices and bag my own groceries. Don't go there late at night they only have the self checkout and its a pain to use if you are buying fruit and vegetables.

This store is at least 50 years old. They need to update. The shelves are empty most of the time and they are dropping brands weekly. The meat is so bad I would not feed it to my dog let alone eat it myself. I ask questions and the employees have no answer or just don't give a damn. The lines are ridiculously long whenever I shop there between the 5-6 pm hour. Usually only one cashier is working. Maybe two at the most. The rest is self-check. (But... if you buy an alcoholic beverage, you can't stand in that line). I would suggest driving up the road to the 4th Street/Farmers Lane Safeway as they hire more check-out cashiers. read more

Used to be a fairly good store - then came the self-check machines and customer service flew right out the window. Posted everywhere are signs that assure customers more checkers will be called if there are more than three people in line but I've never seen it actually happen. Feels like they're trying to force us all to switch over to the self-check so they can get rid of ever more employees. Also, quite a few of the checkers they have retained are incredibly slow at their jobs - another reason to avoid them and use the self-check. However, the self-check machines are so counter-intuitive that there must always be an employee standing by to help people complete their transactions - which wouldn't be so bad if you felt like you actually had a choice between an efficient human and a quirky machine - unfortunately, there do not seem to be any efficient humans on this Safeway's payroll. This morning I stopped to buy several small items, counted them up and realized I had 17 (that's two over the limit for quick-check, which was actually open for a change). Started to move toward the regular checkout lanes (couldn't do self-check because I was buying a bottle of wine) and saw that the two open lanes each had five or six customers already waiting - most with full baskets. Got into the quick-check and almost left two of my items off so I could come in at the limit but got irritated that Safeway wasn't sticking to its promise to open up more lanes when there are more than three customers waiting and decided to just go through with 17. The woman manning the quick-check processed my order and then scolded me for bringing more than 15 lines through - she also muttered that it had been happening all morning - BIG SURPRISE! Oliver's Market, just 10 minutes away, is by far the better place to do your grocery shopping, even with narrow isles and not as well-stocked. Oliver's produce, deli, prepared food and salad bar just beat Safeway all to heck as far as quality and selection. Every time I stop at Safeway, thinking it will be quicker than driving to Oliver's, I regret it and vow not to come back. Management should be ashamed to represent itself as a "Super"Market - it is far from super - only sub-par at best and guaranteed to raise your blood pressure nine times out of ten. Today, my sister and i went through the 15 limit line and i tipped the gallon of milk over and a few drops dripped out. The cashier asked very politely for the young man that was bagging groceries in a different line helping someone else to please run to get a new gallon of milk ....I mentioned the gallon of milk that has a yellow lid on it because that's the only way I can remember which milk my husband drinks. He sure was a runner and so polite I love this Safeway for understanding that we understand and want efficient help like we get from the grocery baggers! They are young, helpful and ALWAYS a great attitude of anything asked of them. I will always shop here! read more

Recently turned vegan except for fish (need the protein). Live nearby and stopped by this place this morning. As I lingered in produce (RIGHT next to fish counter) trying to pick out the right sized sweet potatoes, I listened to the person who manages all the fish cough and cough and cough and cough and cough and cough....you get the idea. This woman coughed all over the seafood department for at least 3 minutes (seemed like 15 minutes)! After the first minute or so, I thought to myself "Okay, I've already made up my mind that I'm not going to buy any fish from you today", but, after the next minute or so I started thinking "CAN YOU STOP PLEASE!!! I can't stand it! Now I know d*%n well THAT I'M NEVER GOING TO BUY FISH IN THIS PLACE! At the self checkout, which was relatively slow today, I asked the 'Guardian of the Self Checkout Stations' if I could share. After listening to my story just as I explained it above, his only response was "...we still gotta go to work...blah...blah". While riding home I thought: Gee. We go to a Safeway grocery store-THE ONLY STORE IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA thanks to the capitalist economic principles forced upon us over the last 30 years. This store has been granted a license to serve the public and, because they offer products which are to be CONSUMED by the general public, they are expected to distribute their products in a clean and safe manner. So they treat their employees in such manner that, even though they are ill with infectious diseases, they still allow (demand really) them to come to work and handle and distribute RAW, UNWRAPPED FOOD to the general public. If there is a morally conscience attorney out there, what is the difference between this employee and the HIV infected moron that has sex with anybody and everybody? REALLY?!!? Over the past 15 years, this store has been getting worse and worse, all the while prices are rising and rising to ensure that Safeway remains profitable. For all you out there who think I'm some kind of cantankerous crackpot, go buy a slab of salmon from the lady in the seafood dept. And then you can run down to the neighborhood Walgreens and get your 'flu shot'-idiot. Oh, I just remembered-Safeway actually OFFERS flu shots from time to time! Go figure! read more

It's easy to see how Cerberus, the hedge fund that bought Safeway, is going to pay for the $9 billion transaction; raising prices and cutting quantities. I was a regular patron over the years because Safeway was usually convenient and provided decent value for my grocery dollar. Now, NSM (not so much). To cite one item I bought regularly, superpasteurized milk in 16 oz. containers. They typically sold at $1.25 (7.8 cents an ounce), sometimes a buck each on sale. Recently I noticed they'd cut the size to 12 oz and kept the price at $1.25 (10.4 cents/oz). That's a 33% hike on milk, and that's just one example. Rye bread, frozen pizza and other common purchases are all up by double digits. Oliver's Market, for it's upscale reputation, offers better prices than Safeway on most common items. On meats and fish, the prices can be higher, but Safeway doesn't come close to the quality of the meat, chicken and fish at Oliver's. So Safeway's loss is Oliver's gain for me and I've cut my visits to rarely instead of regular. read more

Nobody's perfect, but this is a fine store. If you bought something that wasn't right, like produce that didn't make it overnight in the fridge, bring it back and they will not only replace it, but give you back your purchase price as well. I had some poor "fresh" crabmeat that I buy to make a great crab dip. It was too old and ended up way too fishy. I brought that to the attention of the manager and he gave me a twenty dollar coupon for whatever I wished to buy. The point is they really do care. Yes, they have a lot of customers from Oakmont. We'll all be there someday! The aisles are narrow and when they put in-aisle displays, it can be a roadblock. I've found the help to be actually helpful. So, bottomline, Safeway as a large corporate food market could be considered the brand X of supermarkets. You can't find the exotic ingredients there and Oliver's is nearby. But all in all, price, availability, and customer service is fine. read more
