This is one of few Safeway stores I frequent because I'm always around the Beacon Hill neighborhood. The general area where this one is located - Rainier Beach in particular - is known for being sketchy especially at night. Aside from those times, this place gets a ton of people and cars are always parked at its parking lot, so it's actually very lively, but of course that's left to each person's interpretation on what that means. It's your regular grocery store inside, with fruits and the floral section near the front and everything else organized in standard fashion. I like coming here since they have most things that I want and need in terms of food like strawberries and blueberries, strawberry jam, some cereal brands, cubed ham and bread. Employees here are in general pretty helpful like when I need to reach for an item I want that's too high up the shelves. This particular visit is for their deli area, though. Of course, if there's food then I'm reviewing it! Their deli section has a ton of fried foods and there's even a small section for their sushi. For this visit, I got 2 pounds of their fried chicken wings and thighs, which came to about $18 after tax. The skin is dry and not juicy, but the flavor and salt profile is spot on! Whule the skin wasn't juicy, the meat was and that's a plus! Server behind the counter also let me sample one of their tater tots, and I might just get that next when I'm in the mood! read more

First of all, my hats off to the employees of this store. It's an absolute drug infested parking lot and filthy to boot. The employees have to deal with the garbage outside that is dangerous. I will never shop here again. Meth is smoked right outside the store... and these drugs addicts leave trash everywhere. I don't want to touch the carts that are used by the druggies. The QFC down the street doesn't have this issue. It's sad to see moms, elderly folks having to navigate this horrible place. I had to walk around the entire store several times to find anything I needed. Placement/organization is not good. Then when I went to self checkout, I typed my phone number into the machine, and the safeway employee came over, and said I cannot use self checkout. She said we had too many items. I said but we are two separate people with separate orders and she said it doesn't matter, we're sharing a cart. She said I need to use the regular checkout. When I went to look for an available checkout, all of the lights indicating any lanes were available were all off. I had to ask an employee if she was available to assist with checkout. First (and only) time going into this Safeway. I walked up to the doors to find the closet ones permanently shuttered. Ah, yes, we're in one of those neighborhoods. The door that allows entry leads to the produce section, and I found myself immediately on top of a bunch of other people that were on top of other people. Very uncomfortable and unsafe feeling -- I would not want to be in here during an emergency!! It's a Safeway, you know what's in here. I really, really needed to grab some things so I didn't look at prices. They were the closest place, so it was what it was...though next time I'll take a moment to go elsewhere. Self checkout worked fine. I was able to get in and out quickly, physically safe, and my car was still intact when I got back, so it's all good. read more

Is anyone in charge here? I placed a grocery order around 0800 yesterday with delivery schedule between 12 and 1600. At 1530 they started shopping for my groceries. No call, text or anything to inform me that my groceries were not going to be delivered. Completely unacceptable. This grocery store is NOT safe. There have been shootings that remain unsolved. The parking lot is full of random people and teenagers loitering near the front door of the grocery store and adjacent liquor store. The staff is great, but this is yet another store with a no-backpack policy that punishes transit commuters, so I won't give them my business anymore. The woman in the Deli couldn't Multitask and pulled her rude behavior out and shouted "I'm busy and l will be with you in a minute" When all l asked was "Are these wings burnt?" Which she chose to LOSE IT! and snapped her 11 word reply!? All she had to say was Yes or No. Simple one word answer but no she had to lose it. I've posted a picture of the burnt wings and would like some feed back. She is always RUDE and never friendly! and if she isn't ignoring people she's being passive aggressive about why she's so slow. This is about the Safeway pharmacy. I believe the pharmacist name is Michelle? She sounds like a Vietnamese lady but I don't know for sure. She's so impatient and rude. I dropped off a prescription here last week and they called me to tell me they had to order them and wait a couple days and after waiting for a week, I called to check on the status and they said they couldn't order them but I was never notified. She claimed that she assumed I got it elsewhere, said bunch of excuses for not notifying me. How could I have gotten elsewhere when they have my prescription? Awful experience! read more

I've moved here from West Seattle. These employees are not happy. The management barely cares about safety and drugs being sold right in front of their operable door. They had a guard for a while. That helped. Many people of all ethnicity and economic background (which I prefer) shop here but the store is treated like the undesirable location. PCC has the same clientele in the same vicinity yet they don't treat it like it . The vegetables are always run down quickly. They stock tired veggies like broccoli and green beans that no one wants. Hard to figure out if there's a good hour to go to get fresh vegetables. The bakery and deli workers are nice. Don't go in semblance of a hurry to the Starbucks stand. They literally try to torture you. 3 drinks were made in 15+ minutes and I left not able to wait for my drinks any more. read more

Absolute mayhem in this store today before the " cold" weather moved in. Witnessed a full on fight at 5:00pm. The police came and completely made the store even worse than it was before the fight, by blocking the 3 check checkout aisles that was 15 people deep. The self check out area had over 30 people in it at one time. The security guards just stood there and let the fight happen. Right in the entry way with kids and elderly walking in. The employees were nervous and couldn't keep up and were so rude on top of it. There was no bags to check out. There was no carts, no baskets and everyone was so rude when asked for very simple things to shop with. You should shut down and start over. It was so unsafe in there. I'm done with the Rainier Beach Safeway. If you don't check your receipts on a regular basis, you'll be conveniently charged the regular price instead of the advertised sale price. Happened several times over the years. Usually showing the manager their weekly ad is enough to get a price adjustment. Yesterday, I was charged double the sales price. It's clearly printed in Safeway's weekly ad: if you purchased at least 4 regular Digiorno pizzas' you pay $5.99 each. Instead I got charged $11.98 each. Even after reviewing the ad, this manager would not honor the advertised price. He said you needed to have 2 Safeway reward points to get the sales price. On their website its states that you get double the reward points for that purchase, not that you have to have or use 2 reward points to get the sale price. My annoyance turned to irritation as the manager was dismissive; that my concerns had no validity. If he asked another manager for confirmation, I'm sure this would've been easily resolved. But he insisted I had to have 2 reward points and walked off. I ended up returning the pizzas'. Got home and filled out an online complaint, but I doubt anything will come of it. I'm taking my business to other South Seattle grocers like, Trader Joe's, Vegetable Bin and Maruta. read more

One star for the deli! I ordered the Philly Cheesesteak (I know, don't ask why) from the deli. The picture on the menu looked pretty decent and I was hungry. I left to get a few things, and when I came back (see picture)! They didn't even bother to melt the cheese or warm up the meat, I won't even bring up the fact it was in between two slices of white bread. So this is your standard grocery store. Not much unusual or exceptional about it. HOWEVER, there were several things I noticed that, for my purposes, I was impressed by. 1) Beer - They have an excellent selection for a grocery store. One entire refrigerator shelf, plus a separate end cap refrigerator for single bottles and additional six-packs. Good selection and a nice mix of macro beer, craft beer and ciders. And they replenish them frequently because I came back four or five days after my first visit and they'd restocked with different stuff. 2) Coffee - There's another entire end cap refrigerator of gourmet coffee drinks. I don't know if that's something that's typical for Seattle, but it seemed like a huge selection. I'd add that I can't stand coffee. 3) Rewards program - So I was at the register, and the checker had scanned all my groceries and asked if I had a Safeway rewards shopper card thingie. I said no, I'm not from here. So he asked the guy behind me in line if he had one, which he did. So the checker scanned it and chopped about $15 off my bill. I was very pleased not only by the savings but by the checker taking the time to ask for a card and finding one from another customer. One very small (but important to me) knock - their selection of pretzels is terrible. They basically had like three bags of the same kind of pretzels. How am I supposed to drink beer like that? Stopped by today. Again no scooters and no one seemed to know were they were, I was stressed shopping with my elderly Mother. To make it worse. 1. One lady inside the store had asked my Mother & me if she could use our cell phones. I said an emphatic 'NO' to her she had nerve to get indignant. 2. Those panhandlers need to go! I mean the one Mother rocking her baby back & forth in the way of customers. I don't like that they use their kids. Safeway why aren't you giving these people the heave ho? My trip was stressful. Another two stars are warranted - the employees have really stepped up their game. And by that, I don't just mean new employees, some of the ones who've previously had some attitude problems have been consistently helpful, friendly and seemingly patient with even the most difficult customers. There's still issues: having to carefully check the expiration dates for even dry goods isn't my favorite but I don't know if it's much different elsewhere. I find that they're almost always better at keeping things in stock, the prices are consistently low and overall, I am not sad this is my local store so yeah, I'm a fan for sure. read more

Probably due to it being rather larger than the Othello location nearby, their munchies (namely the chips) have more diversity - especially a few more 'natural/organic' stuff. Late-nite, daylight... I still feel pretty safe. Just do your business and all is good. The store is still very decent, overall, after all these years... holding down Rainier Beach. I just moved nearby. I like the store's offerings, but the parking lot and gas station is regularly full of garbage. It overflows from the bins and is regularly strewn about the parking lot. This store has a consistent scam in the 50% off section. If you select something from that section check your receipt because I have caught them two times not providing me with the 50% discount. This is ridiculous! They entice you to buy something you may not have otherwise then don't even provide the discount! Then to top it off when I brought this to the attention of the checker that just checked me out she was so incompetent that she couldn't do anything about it and told me to talk to her manager. So I waited in line at the customer service line only to be met by another inexperienced and unfriendly employee that just said it would be easier for her to give me a refund rather than give me the 50% discount so I took the refund and will never shop there again!! Ok I get it this seems like a trivial matter, but I find it unacceptable for them to make this "mistake" then waste more of my time for me to get the discount they promised. They are hoping that the customer will get fed up and pay the additional amount because "it's not that big of a deal." It is a complete scam, bait and switch, and it is unacceptable. As far as Safeway's go, it's pretty good! They keep the shelf's stocked well and the labels all facing out... OCD friendly. Staff is exceptionally friendly. Only thing to watch out for is the expiration dates on products.... a few items we bring home have been only a day out from expiration. But overall they are doing great things down there. read more

The store itself is alright, but the deli... the deli has great food but the customer service... they're kind enough to each person, but if you stand in the wrong line, they won't tell you. This is the Safeway I go to when my friendly neighborhood "ghetto Safeway" up on MLK won't cut it. Metropolitan Market, it's not; but I can usually find what I want at this store. They have the pharmacy, the movie rentals, the full deli and the bigger produce section. They have the bakery, though I wish the bread were better. They have meat and seafood counters where you can get stuff that's not pre-packaged. They have wine that comes in bottles, wine actually worth drinking, and beer worth buying too. They have more than one kind of sun-dried tomatoes, and the jar doesn't have dust on it. They even have the Safeway gas station, giving me the chance for $0.10 off per gallon. So there's a lot to like about this store, even if it could be better. They're clean, polite and competent, though they don't know my name like they do at the ghetto store. There's plenty of parking, though the parking lot is fairly ghetto on its own (the liquor store next door doesn't help with that, though it's sure convenient). I still long for a foodie haven down in the south end. I wish we had a Metropolitan Market, a Whole Foods, even a Trader Joe's. But for now, this Safeway keeps me stocked with everything I need. read more

It's great to be a regular! Even at your local grocery store. This Safeway has a food bar that's decent and a nice Deli. Fill a takeaway container from a wide selection of hot cooked foods or salads - they price it by the pound so the heavier your container the higher the cost. Precooked rotisserie chicken, salads, a deli, a Starbucks just about everything. This Safeway is also walking distance from where I lived. read more

Another reason that Rainier Beach is better than Northgate: this Safeway. I think that the Northgate Safeway stopped taking care of herself because she found out about this Safeway: it's clean even though it lives in the ghetto, it's well-stocked with multi-ethnic foods, it has better melons and it's protected by police officers at the doors. The Northgate Safeway, with its shitty parking lot and tiny wine section, just can't compete. This place has good meat, a decent organic selection, and regularly stocks everything I need. It's not Trader Joe's, but it'll do. I recently moved into the area after living in a place that had a Trader Joe's just a couple minutes from my house. While I continue to love the cheap prices at TJ's, the wine selection and the quality of their quick lunch-type items, I've found a decent replacement in my local neighborhood Safeway. Firstly, let's deal with the issue of the neighborhood that I keep seeing in the other reviews. Is it the safest area in Seattle? Let's be honest. No. There have been multiple shootings in the parking lot or the adjacent areas over the years, but there's a lot of crime in the city these days. I don't feel unsafe going here. To their credit, the security officer and added patrols in the area DO help with that. The employees inside are mostly helpful. Sure, there are a couple of the cashiers that you can tell hate their job, but they're not rude. They're just not all that pleasant. It's an acceptable apathy because they still continue to check you out quickly and do that thing where they try to pronounce your last name and then give up on doing it correctly. It's always good fun. The produce section is quality. I enjoy having a lot of organic options available. The bakery is kind of hit or miss. I love their bagels, but the pies do leave a little to be desired. That being said, I ate one of their Dutch apple pies the other night with a speed that could be compared to that of an eating competition. The wine selection leaves a lot to be desired. Trader Joe's kills this place by comparison. Even QFC makes this selection seem miniscule. There are some decent finds in there, though, but you have to look hard to find them. The attached gas station is a win despite concerns about the quality of the gas being raised. I can't imagine that it's much worse than Arco and the ten cents off a gallon really helps! Overall, I'm happy with this as my neighborhood store. I can see myself traveling down to the new PCC on occasion after it's built, but for now, this place is my staple. read more

Are you willing to get groceries despite the fact that there are bums outside? Brave the problems outside, and come in to buy your groceries. This isn't a discount grocery, same prices here that you get in upmarket neighborhoods. You feel safe inside, as there is always a city cop at the door, making sure that people don't steal loaves of bread and vodka bottles (now available at the grocery store!). I think I'll stick to the asian markets, where prices are low, and no bums outside and cops inside. read more

This safe way is just like the freeway. From 4-6 ish the lines are super packed! So you are warned! Other wise its just a normal safe way, not much else to say. I live within a mile of this place so I will usually go here for things. They do have a security guard/police man that is always at the front door, not sure if this is supposed to make me feel secure or is maybe some foreshadowing as to what usually happens here. Solid market -- came here two times on our week long trip to stock up on some goodies. I like the layout of this market -- similar to any Albertson's or Acme grocery stores, and for me it had a very familiar vibe. Not as huge a selection or ingredients or brands as I'm accustomed to compared with Super Stop and Shops or other big name markets, but it really had everything we needed or wanted. We got grass fed Angus beef, delicious look rib-eye steaks, organic salads and grape tomatoes, pasta and Nathan's hot dogs, salami, Applegate turkey, swiss cheese, Hawaiian sweet rolls, Charmin toilet paper, Neutrogena acne cream, hand soap. Everything was reasonably priced and lots of the items were on sale. Donuts and rolls/bagels looked really delicious and since we came at night both times, they were still remarkably fresh. Of course there wasn't a lot of them left, but what was there was still soft. I admit, I did the squeeze test first. The bathroom is kind of dirty and messy, but I wouldn't expect much more from a grocery bathroom. On our second trip here, noticed police on bicycles outside (around 2-3) stationed outside near one entrance, and one officer inside the store upon entering. A bit weird -- didn't think the crime was a huge issue here. The inside and outside looked safe, but then again I wouldn't really know how it is here on a day to day basis. Very large parking lot, plenty of spots. The lot is a bit dark -- they don't have a lot of lights distributed throughout the space. The Starbucks here was cozy and had several tables -- usually two were always occupied but I did notice the people looked a little worse for wear. Hot foods station : Super unappealing food. Deep fried chicken, old looking Asian style dishes and spring/egg rolls. Prepared foods -- plenty of pizzas, sandwiches, and roasted chicken available right as you walk in. I applied for a Safeway card here to get some savings -- hey a few bucks is a few bucks in my pocket! The woman with her green hair and bright nails was super friendly and helpful, walking me through everything. As for the rest of the cashiers, nothing to write home about, but they weren't rude or nasty so I take that as a win! Also have a gas station here. read more

At the self-casher I was leaded to broken machine. and someone left stuffs there. I tried to move to a working machine and was told that I can not do that. Also I have to buy stuffs someone left. He finished and went to help at the fried chicken counter even though there were 3 other employees helping there. Outright ignored me even though he knew I'd been waiting on him to help me. For people who shop at the Safeway at 9262 Rainier Ave South (near intersection of 51st) and take Covid-19 seriously: Our Safeway doesn't. Today, (May 8) around 2:00, I was checking out at my (former) Safeway. My checker and I were appropriately masked, but the checker at the next lane was not. There was no way to get more than 3 feet of her, and no sneeze guard between us. When I told her she needed to wear the mask ( officially store policy for all employees,) she just told me "you need to mind your own business. Of course, it IS my business, and that of everybody else in the store. When I found the manager, I showed her photos of the checker, who by then had entirely removed the mask that had been hanging loosely around her neck. Manager's response was, "Well, she was wearing one earlier." Then "There are sneeze guards for protection." Then, when pressed further, "I'll take care of it," with absolutely no move to do so. A call to corporate in California got me a promise that a regional manager would call me "probably Monday." How many times will a virus be transmitted at that store between now and then?" read more

Watch out for overcharging. Pretty regularly I find that the checkout price is more than the shelf price. The parking lot by the Fueling Station is like a dirt road and has a ghetto feel with steady stream of panhandlers and junkies around the store. Bakery and the Starbucks were good.
