My family and I entered the check out line and we weren't greeted. Worker Elias gave us such a dirty look and then told us to pack our own groceries. Then she processed to pass my little brother our groceries by aggressively throwing it at him. She had such an attitude. Then she started getting more aggressive and slide a pack of Gatorade towards my little brother's hand smashing it.She didn't apologize until my mom told her to. She replied with "sorry" not being genuine at all. Such horrible service. The manager should reconsider having Elias apart of their work team as it makes the Safeway look poorly in the beautiful scenery of Sedona. read more

I observed 2 employees sitting around in front of the store, sitting on the mobile scooters. Inside employees were standing around doing nothing and an employee was playing with the register closed sign at the customer service desk. The employee observing the self checkout was eating from a large bag of chips. All this was happening while more and more customers lined up at the One open cash register and the self check out line grew longer and longer. When I finally was able to buy my melting ice cream, one of the mobile scooter children was laughing and talking with the other scooter mover and saying loudly she "had nothing to do." She said this repeatedly as people stood around with their goods waiting to be checked out. Finally, she began to bag groceries as the self checkout "supervisor" continued to stuff his face with chips and the customer service desk resumed playing with the laminated lane closed sign. As goods and services continue to rise because of inflation, grocery employees continue to stand around getting paid while I am given little choice but to check out my own more-expensive-by-the-day groceries (no discount for doing so) or stand in a line for an unreasonable amount of time with 10 closed cash registers collecting dust. This is absolutely ridiculous and this Sedona Safeway store, like others that continue this trend, should be boycotted. While most individual employees here are great.... Place has been perpetually understaffed (even before COVID) Register lines now habitually backed up 10 deep or further. Just had some youngster close up a checkout line- arbitrarily - with half dozen people in it whom had been waiting for :10+ minutes or more. As a local this is definitely the best place to buy groceries in the Sedona area. The best time to visit to avoid the tourists is fairly early in the morning, especially on a Tuesday. Came to Safeway for some groceries and we decided to order some sandwiches from the deli for dinner. Robyn E was the one who was making our sandwiches and she was everything but professional! She was joking around more than doing her job! Which took so much longer to make our sandwiches. I never mind seeing workers enjoying their job and having a good time but this time was different! My best friends mom had ordered a sandwich and left to go grocery shopping around the store but my best friend and I stayed around to wait for it and had yet to order our sandwiches. She finishes the first one and we wanted to order two more of the same kind. As she's making it another lady comes up and waits to be helped. I think Robyn felt intimidated and in a rush as the other lady was standing there. So as she finished the other two sandwiches, we told her we needed another one for me. She then says out loud, "omg not another one". To me, that's very rude. You don't say that kind of stuff out loud or to any customer. That's your job. That was like saying, omg I need to ring up some more of your groceries... I easily got annoyed and irritated. She asked what I wanted and made it. She didn't say she was kidding or say "ha ha" or anything. Rushed to make my sandwich. I didn't easily take to her humor. We lived in Phoenix in 1991 briefly before moving to Sedona. Trying out the different grocery stores, we determined back then that Albertsons was the most expensive store in the valley. Since Albertson's took over Safeway, the prices have gone through the roof. $4.69 for a half gallon of organic milk on sale from $5! I can get it at Whole Foods for $3.69. When could you ever shop for anything at Whole Foods for less money than conventional grocery stores? WF also has much better rotisserie chicken's for just a dollar more. I continue to do most of my shopping here because I use the Safeway shopping app and can sometimes save money that way. But even that is not as good as it used to be because of the high prices. I will never shop at this location again. My family lives in Arizona and decided to spend some time together in Sedona. I needed to get some groceries and decided to shop at Safeway. I walked up to one of the female workers there and asked where the bacon is. She hatefully responded, "the bacon?!! It's along the back wall!!" as if I should know that. Then when I went to the self checkout and began ringing my groceries the cashier walks over and asks me if I rang my Kleenexes. She checks the screen and sees that I did in fact ring the Kleenexes. I offered for her to check my items and she declined. So I continue to ring my items, scanned the allergy visine and tossed it in the bag when an error message popped up on the screen. The cashier comes over and pulls the visine out and called off the other items in the bag and re-rings the visine. Okay, no problem. It's when she stood directly across from me and watched me like a hawk until I finished and paid. I'm not a thief. I have a conscience, believe in God and don't believe in stealing. Came to Sedona for my 30th birthday with some gfs and went to Safeway to blow up some Number balloons that we bought to celebrate, since this is a well-known service of theirs. We arrived at about 4 PM to no one able to help us at the counter. When we asked for help we continued to get the runaround from several employees including one guy that growled at us. About 20 to 30 minutes later A girl coming back from her break came to help us only to tell us that it was going to cost $15 per balloon to blow up and that "wasn't the price of the balloon but the helium". $15 each for some air?! I came to Sedona for a day of hiking and came to this Safeway to pick up some money via Western Union. The first time I came in was around noon and I was told that the girl who takes care of WU transactions was on break. Went downtown, walked around for a while and then went back later in the day. Went up to customer service, asked again to use WU services. The lady behind the counter went to get the employee I was told about earlier. She came out, didn't say anything to me and went directly to the western union computer. She started typing, now I'm about 5 minutes into standing there and she still has not said anything to me. Finally she looks up, and asks me if I'm sending or receiving money. I tell her I'm receiving, asks how much, and when I tell her the amount (quite a bit) she rolls her eyes. She had to go in the back and dig out more cash. The entire transaction she treated me poorly and with the shittiest attitude. She was brusque and harsh and several times she asked me for information that was already written on a piece of paper that I had put in front of her in the very beginning. Not to mention that when my boyfriend pointed out that their "we card" sticker still said that the smoking age was 18 she nearly bit his head off because she thought he was asking to buy cigarettes underage. I don't need to be coddled, a simple hello and for employees to actually do their jobs. Worst experience I've ever had at a Safeway store! If I could give negative stars, I would! I highly advise to skip this store and go to Basha's down the road where the people are actually decent human beings and treat customers with respect. While in Sedona, I stopped into this God-forsaken Safeway to grab some food items to make dinner. I grabbed my items fairly quickly and then went to pay (which I should've just walked out without even spending a dime in this piece of sh*t store). I, unfortunately, ended up in Norma's line. (If you still go to this Safeway and see her working the cash register, RUN to another one!) While helping a man three customers ahead of me, Norma seemed to be interviewing or interrogating him -- for 10mins we heard about his love life, career choices, where he went to college, etc. (apparently we all gave a sh*t... NOT!!!) The customers ahead of me learned their lesson and kept quiet, didn't even say a word to her lest they'd get trapped by Norma's chatter. But that didn't stop Norma from taking her sweet ass time scanning their items -- and they even paid with cash and change and it took her FOREVER to count the change! After 15 excruciating and torturous minutes it was my turn to check out. Just as I thought I was on the home stretch, Norma held up the line and said she had to count her money. What?! Who counts the register money in the middle of a rush when your line is almost half-way down the aisle into the store?! Seriously??? Then Norma decided to take her sweet time scanning my first items, and I had asked her not to bag my items as she would take the bag off the stand and then attempt to put items in the bag -- I've NEVER seen such an incompetent person attempting to bag items this way. Apparently this upset her because she starting having an attitude with me and started scanning my items -- including some grapes, yes GRAPES, not grape juice -- and literally throwing them down the belt. I asked for her manager, and she just picked up the phone and paged him, Michael, overhead. As soon as the ASSISTANT manager (not even the MANAGER) came to her lane, Norma threw her hands up and walked away, not even finishing my checkout process. I explained the situation to Michael but he didn't seem to really care much about how rude Norma was or her lack of customer service skills, hence why I'm Yelping my disappointing visit to Safeway. I come to Sedona quite often, but will NEVER shop here again. This was absolutely the WORST customer service experience I've ever encountered. For Sedona, this was my favorite shopping experience for simple meals to cook in our condo. They have lots of easy-fix-dinner items, such as Lloyd's bbq, baked beans, potato salad. They have a wonderful deli counter with lots of already-prepared meats, salads, etc. We went out for a nice lunch today, so a lemon/garlic chicken breast, baked potatoes, and steamed broccoli will be our supper. Their bakery is awesome as well! The fruit covered torte looked too delicious to pass up for dessert for the next few days! read more

The store was very clean and had decent bathrooms to use. There's also a Starbucks located inside which is great! They make your drinks fast and are friendly overall. The table with sugar/milk is located on the side (sort of hidden, but it's there). Let me start with a positive. Kristen was very nice, helpful and informed me that this Starbucks had cold brew (also known as Toddy) much smoother and less acidic than regular iced coffee. Walked me through the reload process and was kind, and again very helpful. I didn't make a crazy request when asking for an inch and a 1/2 of cold soy milk for my lactose intolerant husband's Americano. Glenda about exploded with attitude and telling me she needed to charge me when I asked her for a bit more because she didn't add what was ordered and written on the cup. It was rather embarrassing and quite frankly super rude. Wow, I was shocked after a super relaxing rather enjoyable 6 days here in Sedona the first bit of attitude I get is at 8 am in the morning and from a woman old enough to know better. I've worked for Starbucks, and been to locations all over the states - in Airports, Grocery stores, Gas Stations and I have never been charged a penny for a nominal amount of soy milk to add to my husband's coffee. The .60 cent upcharge is in place for people who want to substitute soymilk in place of cows milk on a mocha or other bar drink. I have been in Sedona for 6 days at this point, have been to both other Starbucks (not corporate stores) and haven't run into an issue about an ounce of soymilk. Glenda - I find your attitude towards customers horrendous. If you don't like your job, Get a new one! The produce area was large and clean from what I saw. In addition, all of the aisles looked clean and organized. The wine selection was good and I always thought Safeway always had a good selection of wine to choose from as well as other alcohol. The staff here were nice, friendly and helpful. Decent sized grocery store right down the street from our timeshare. We were here pretty much once a day between the Starbucks and the groceries. Friendly staff, sign up for a Safeway card even if your only there for vacation it will save you a lot of money. Bonus is they have a pretty good beer and wine section so no need for a separate liquor store trip. read more

This is one GIANT store. All I was really interested in was the booze aisle, and there were about 3-4 aisles full of alcohol related beverages - hooray! We found some great bargains and great varietals from Australia, Chile, Italy, South Africa, France, New Zealand. Since I am boring and not a risk-taker, I ended up getting my favorite Sterling SV and my hon of hons chose some super-Tuscan that was out of this world delicious. check it out next time you're in Red Rock country! read more

I've shopping here since it was built back in the early 80's. I even remember the controversy surrounding its construction because such a large excavation cut was made to accommodate its size. The resulting pile of dirt ended up across the street on Shelby Drive where the Nepenthe Townhouses now sit and was called "Safeway Hill." Before Safeway came to Sedona, there was a smaller Basha's located where the Harkins movie theatres are and an AJ Bayless where New Frontiers now sits. Safeway was initially seen as the national corporate interloper that would eventually eliminate all the competition. Well, it hasn't quite succeeded, but it's come close as it is probably the preferred grocery store in town. Basha's has withstood Safeway's barrage of bargains and bigger stock of brands and items. In fact, there are some things available at Basha's that are either not stocked by Safeway or are superior quality . . . Boar's Head cold cuts come to mind as well as Blue Bunny ice cream. Over the years, I have found it difficult to resist Safeway. I like it's ambiance, (especially after a much needed re-model a few years ago), and the way it is organized. Most things are pretty easy to find although I am pretty sick and tired of the mindless mandatory inquiries from their employees who greet me and ask if I found what I am looking for. The best people to ask are the butchers behind the meat counter. They're a great bunch of guys and one even likes to belt out tunes at full volume while working away cutting steaks or roasts. Definitely gives our Safeway its own special mark and they always know where to find what I'm looking for. My biggest grip ;with Safeway is their ridiculous Just 4 U loyalty card program. They make it sound so wonderfully technologically simple but it's a nightmare trying to remember to add the coupon or special offer online. It's more difficult that it was finding and clipping coupons out of their weekly flier. If I forget to add something online, I end up paying the full price for the item. I've written to their home office to complain and plea for a simpler program like Albertson's who gives you their best price without club membership or a stupid card that tracks all of my purchases for their benefit. If you know how to work their sales and successfully find the bargain items, you can save a lot of money here. It's ironic however that one too many times have I found myself unable to locate something and there is not an employee within 5 aisles to ask for assistance. My other complaint is the turnover of employees. Unlike Basha's who has had some of the same checkers and box boys for 25 years or more, the workers at this Safeway seem to turnover like well done flap jacks on a hot griddle. Is it local management? Are they just flakes? What gives? I go here for my basic grocery items and for sale stuff but I still patronize Basha's for certain items. When Basha's has a produce sale, even Safeway can't seem to compete. read more

The bakery department is awesome and deserves the full rating. They were super helpful, the taste and look of the wedding cake was wonderful and was ready as requested. Only problem was the staff member at the time of pick up did not know how to ring up the order. He said he had not been trained so we had to come back in the morning to pick up. Luckily we had enough time to do that. Safeway should make sure EVERYONE who works in the bakery can ring up a pick up order. Now the Florist department is terrible! Really its the Floral Manager, Ikaika. I have came there on a few occasions and he has no customer service skills. He should be behind the scenes and not interacting with any customers. The problem was for a wedding. Calle Lillies boutonnieres were ordered but no one called to let us know the original boutonnieres died in transition. When the flower order was picked up, they tried to make boutonniere out of the large size Calle Lillies...it looked horrible! His reply to all of this Floral Manager: oh, didn't someone call you? Me: No. Him: Oh well there is nothing we can do. Me: Can I get my money back Him: You will have to go to customer service to get that and then turned his back to me. Thank goodness the person who gave me the refund at the front was totally the opposite. Very nice, personable and helpful. When you are on the run, Safeway has a great daily 4-some of soup offerings. The Autumn Harvest squash and Clam Chowder when available are tops. Adequate single servings are $2, take-away containers and go. Quick , tasty, and easy when time doesn't allow a retaurant stop. My doctor sent in a prescription for Synthroid. I went to pick up the prescription, and thank God I looked at it before I accepted it. It was for Levothyroxine, a medication I am severely allergic to (throat closes up to the point where I have a hard time breathing, as well as hives from head to toe). I understand in Arizona that pharmacies can automatically substitute generics, however my doctor stated that it was to be filled as written with no substitutions (I checked with her to make sure, and that is what she indicated on the prescription). Safeway completely ignored my doctor's instructions. If I had not checked, my life would have been in danger. I could have been killed by taking the medication Safeway tried to give me. I have told this story to other people, and two of my friends said the same thing happened to them. One of them didn't notice the substitution, took the medication, and it took months for her to get over the allergic effects. If you want your prescriptions filled correctly, especially if you are allergic to various meds, find another pharmacy. Your life depends on it. read more

Bought a whole order of 200$ worth of food and drinks, this woman Sandra P I think it was,comes up to all of us and proceeds to check all of our ID which isn't a problem because we were buying a few bottles of wine but I had left my wallet before we left for our lovely vacation, and didn't have an ID she proceeds to tell us that I was the youngest looking one when in fact I was the oldest,( sorry sandra we dont all have wrinkles) and then says that she could cancel the whole order when everyone was clearly over the age and had their ID's, definitely should have walked out and took my money else where. read more

We stopped at Safeway for a few basics when we first arrived in Sedona for our vacation. As soon as we walked in, the smell hit me. Maybe it was a meat display set a little too close to the door in 110 degree heat that caught my senses. The store was poorly organized and poorly stocked. And then they do that cute thing where there are two prices--one for "members" and another for those who are not. We did have a Safeway card from stores visited in other areas, so didn't have to pay the higher prices. When we needed to make one more run before leaving town, we went to another store in the area that was cleaner, better stocked, and better organized with no cute pricing games. read more

Sedona is limited with respect to grocers. I am really surprised that we couldn't find a Whole Foods or similar chain here. Nonetheless, Kroger has done well in AZ. Some girlfriends who are all African American shopped at the store too, pick up some items for our vacation, were treated extremely poorly.
