We got there at 10:40 and they told us they open at 11. We waited until 11 and then I asked them when they open and the guy behind the counter said 11:15, we are not ready. Both times the man and the young girl working there were extremely short and rude. They knew we were waiting and not only they didn't have the courtesy to tell us it will be another 15 minutes l, but they were very rude about it. Go here, and you will not regret it! It is easy to find in the back of the little health food market. I ordered the teriyaki noodle bowl which took a little bit to make. The broth was really flavorful and the noodles, veggies, and tofu were great. I was interested in the bread but once I got there, I wasn't too excited about it. However... the sandwiches were delicious! And the bread for the sandwich actually was amazing. We got the leaf eater, and the pesto and hummus on it were really tasty. It made me want to buy the dips themselves. The chocolate chip cookie was thin, but still somehow chewy, a tiny bit crunchy, and buttery. The surprise purchase. I wanted another. They have a lot of convenient things like salads and sandwiches. Prices aren't bad. They're typical of many organic markets, which are higher than many things at regular grocery stores, but with good prices on some things. Cafe opens after the rest of the store opens. They close before the rest of the store closes, so if you can't make it at that time you can get something from the grab and go section. It has a very delicious Thai peanut noodle salad that's great to eat while going out and about. There's also healthy things like falafel and hummus. Go here and grab a few to go items. My wife and I stopped in and ate lunch here on our scenic drive around Lake Tahoe. The food service counter (calling it a restaurant would be a stretch) was towards the back of the grocery store. There was very little seating inside and no matter where I stood to wait on our food I felt like I was in somebody's way. Once we got our food we sat at a picnic table outside. My wife had the pad Thai against her better judgment because she never likes any pad Thai that she gets out better than the pad Thai she makes at home, but she was pleasantly surprised. I had the falafel salad, and it was absolutely amazing. They had an assortment of items in the deli case that all looked delicious, we ended up taking a box of potato masala with tamarind chutney home. Overall, the food was fantastic, plus it was very gluten free and vegan friendly and I would definitely eat here again, but I would get our food to go in the future, especially during a busy lunch hour. This is one of my favorite places in Tahoe. I'm a huge hippie, big on organic food and better when its made in an organic store! :) Fish tacos have this spice to it that reminds me of indian cuisine. I think its cumin, but whatever it tasted awesome! And the dish was such a generous amount of fish for the price served on two soft tacos. We also ordered the pad thai, which to our surprise was pleasant!! Generous noodles and delicious taste! It was incredible! Homemade koumbacha is a must. And thai ice tea with almond milk is amazing too. Not overly sweet. We've tried numerous other things not on the hot area. Coconut tapioca is a must have dessert. If you like coconut and boba like things, this dessert is a must. Its a bit sweet, but hits the spot. We also like the Chia dessert, reminds us of indian pudding. It has a unique taste, which may or may not be for everyone. Thai noodle salad is great on the go for a hike (exactly what we did), lentil salad has also a exotic indian taste and udon salads are great too! We really like this place. The service is adequate on a good day, but the food is always "wow". If the kitchen is closed, try the prepackaged items in the deli cold case; you won't be disappointed. There are plenty of wholesome options for vegans, vegetarians, GF, omnivores and everything in between. We've never had a bad meal there. Strict vegans should pay attention to the ingredient lists, though. Honey is listed as an ingredient in a few of the cold case items that are labelled "vegan". A few picnic tables are located outside, too, but your best bet is picking up to-go items and eating along the lake or the Truckee river nearby when the weather permits. read more

I bought 5 items there recently: --Mozzarella balls with sun dried tomatoes and herbs --Guacamole --Pesto-goat cheese-sun dried tomatoes --Asian slaw --Macaroni salad While all these 5 items were good taste wise, three of them were so violently salty even my more salt tolerant husband couldn't eat more than one bite. These were: --Guacamole --Mozzarella balls --Asian slaw. The other two were appropriately salted. I hope this was just some "oops, dropped the salt shaker" kind of moment and not an ongoing thing. I, for one, was pretty upset because none of these items are cheap in the least. We were just visitors to Tahoe City, so we will never know whether this was an oops moment or an ongoing thing, but our advice is to proceed with caution on those 3 items... read more

What a hidden gem. This is a tiny deli/ kitchen at the back of s super cute grocery store, called new moon market. It's hard to tell where this is, but just enter the rockery store and it's in the far back left corner with a little counter table and chairs and more seating outside. Kids ordered a turkey sandwich which looked pretty amazing with a lot of fixings like cranberry sauce, greens, cheese etc. I ordered the Thai coconut soup with udon noodles and wow that was SUPERB. Amazing flavored, veggies and tofu just done right. We also ordered the ramen bowl which was also great with some Fried garlic and kale - yummy, hearty and a solid dish. This place is a counter-style kitchen in the back of New Moon Natural Foods grocery/health food store. There are three counter chairs inside and two picnic tables and various chairs outside. You order and pick up your food at the counter. On Sundays (closed) and at other times when the kitchen is closed, you may choose from a plethora of prepared foods in the refrigerated case to the left. (There are various salads - greek, thai, etc. - and soups, desserts, sushi, etc. There are always raw food selections.) While they cater to vegan and vegetarians, there is also meat/fish to choose from on the menu. All of the ingredients are ULTRA fresh and oh-so tasty. My first few experiences with Uncommon were when they were technically closed. I picked out the Raw-taco from the 'fridge and devoured it outside. It was SUPER tasty and rivaled anything I've eaten at a Raw Foods eatery - and at a fraction of the price at an easy $5.75. The second time, I picked up a baguette that was smothered in pesto and provolone for a cool $3. I ate it by the Truckee River and vowed to pick up the lot of them the next time I returned and they were offered. This past time, I was lucky! The kitchen was open and I had a whole menu to choose from, including a few tasty-sounding daily specials (fajitas, fish tacos, etc.). I opted for a Pan Bagna half-sandwich and an Inari tofu pocket, uh, thingy. The sandwich was AMAZING (the only downfall was that the bread could be a little softer). Oozing with pesto and olives and peppers and onions and the juiciest/tastiest/ripest tomatos I have EVER come across. The tofu pocket was uber-tasty, also, and came with a side of ginger. It was basically rice and tofu stuffed into a pocket and drizzled with a teriyaki sauce and sesame seeds. I ate all of this outside at the lovely picnic area they provide. If you're wanting something sweeter, the chocolate mousse and brownies look downright delectable, but that's for another time. read more

one star... and here is why: I had an experience with them a year ago and I still can't forget it - how can you do business like that? I've tried a piece of their completely astonishing berry pie once that somebody bought for me - it was so good that I've been dreaming about getting the whole pie for my mother-in-law's birthday that was coming up. So on that day I went to their place and was so happy to see several pies sitting in the window... I asked for one and they refused to sell it to me. YES, they just said no, you can't buy it. WTF??? We only sell by piece, we can't sell you the whole pie. That was really shocking. A year later I decided to stop by - even though my husband told me I'm crazy and we should never go there again because of that experience we had . I still went, and I've been told they are not making then any more.. or at the moment.. NO WONDER! If you don't want to sell your product, people won't buy it. Don't go here. The owner is a total a**hole. Came in here excited to get some irie vegan food and instead was harassed by the "owner" to leave because I had my service animal with me while he was providing a service to me for my DISABILITY. I explained that to the guy but all he had to say was to take my dog outside. How is my service animal supposed to provide his service if he is outside and I'm shopping inside? What if I had a serious health event occur while inside that could have been prevented had my service animal been there? This said "owner" was really rude about my service animal, too. Saying things like, "this is MY kitchen and MY store and I don't want your dog in here." I believe the best food comes from people who are happy cooking it and put good intentions into making it. I would like to 1st point out that on Yelp "Uncommon Kitchen" is marked as a vegan/vegetarian spot --- it is not. That part is a little deceiving. Having said this -- they do have some great vegetarian options. Still at first -- we were a little confused. We looked at the menu and could not figure out if the "chicken" was chicken-chicken or fake chicken (as some vegan/veg restaurants do not elaborate). When I went to ask the staff to clarify the cashier's response felt a little along the lines of "well, of course it's real meat." Needless to say, it made me feel a little put off. However, Yelp had already warned me about the "horrible service from kids", so I tried to not let it faze me. And speaking of service -- it wasn't THAT bad. In fact, I found that they were pretty friendly. After all, it is the Uncommon Kitchen. It seemed there was no set standard and everyone was going with the flow of the day. The food was good. I think they are passionate about making food and that is what really matters the most. My partner purchased the leafeater sandwich and seemed to really enjoy it. The baguette was a little stiff, but baguette's usually are. It was plenty of food and we could probably have shared the sandwich (he took 1/2 of it home). I ordered ... and feel free to giggle... # 5 of the Sushi menu. It was not "real sushi" at all and I did not expect it to be. If you're snobby about your sushi, I'm sure it won't be a no-brainer not to get it here. :))) I was just in that type of mood and it satisfied my cravings. It reminded me of when I make sushi at home, except I'm usually a little more generous with the raw fish. There was a lot of rice (a lot). The outside seating is cute but there are only two tables. We were lucky to get one. Don't count on it -- maybe plan to eat by the lake. Overall, we had a pretty good experience. This place is fantastic! The Leaf Eater is my favorite sandwich. My mother and I went today and split one. They marinate the onions in this delicious vinegar and then add greens, tomato, avocado and homemade pesto. It's so good. I crave this sandwich all year. The Thai iced tea is delicious, you can order it with cream or almond milk. Last year I got the coconut tapioca pudding and the potato Marsala to take home. Both were delicious. This year I got the tiramisu and a sushi roll to take home. Haven't tried them yet but I'm sure they are going to be awesome. All of it is fresh and homemade. Great little food counter in a natural food store but the vegan options are pretty limited on the weekends. Came in for a late lunch and there was pretty much only one sandwich that could be modified to be vegan. The hot food/bowls weren't available on weekends so that was our only choice.
