Every time I shop here, there are people with their dogs in the shopping carts or walking around sniffing at all the shelves. I do not want to buy things that some strange dog licked/ this is a food store!! I welcome an actual service dog, but mangy pets should NOT be allowed in. The store is also discontinuing favorite brands and slowly turning all the shelf space to mostly store-brand junk. It's Dirty and very few checkouts open but the self check, which I refuse to use because they don't want to pay employees. The homeless hanging around outside asking for money, stealing in the store and making you feel unsafe in the parking lot is not enough for one security guard to handle. read more

Called two days before my meat was dated to go bad, spoke with meat department person who told me to bring it back when the meat dept was open and they would exchange the meat, I mentioned it would be hard to get in when they were open before the holiday due to my work schedule, the man was very accommodating and said just come in as soon as you can. Well this was shortly before the Thanksgiving holiday and I wasn't able to get in when the meat dept. was open until after Thanksgiving. I got to the store when the meat dept was open and was now told that I would have to bring the meat back when the manager was in or when the customer service dept. person was open. I came back during their open hours (which I called to confirm) but the serv dept person closes an hour early and takes her lunch during that last hour (apparently). Someone must have told her I was waiting for her, she came up and said "I will not be returning your meat, we no longer return meat" so they can sell items that go bad prior to expiration (which is happening more and more with more and more products). If something goes ROTTEN prior to exp. Date and you wish to EXCHANGE it for an edible item, it isn't a return, it's an exchange. I guess I will NO LONGER buy meat at Safeway!!! This crap stinks to high heaven as I have now pulled it out of the freezer (to keep it from spoiling any more than it had already) and hauling it back and forth to the store in attempts of getting the product replaced. read more

The fact I'm taking to to review a Safeway says it all. WTF is up with their bathroom situation?!? It seems that the code to the bathroom door is State Secret number 3! Secret number 1: Nuclear Codes, State Secret number 2: Again...Nuclear Codes and State Secret number 3: the bathroom door code!!! It took three employees to find the code and let me in. What a waste of time and effort. With the amount of time these people have to spend escorting people to the bathroom, they could have a full time bathroom attendant. Instead just let people use the facilities!! You want a door code, fine. Just give it out. Trust me, I'm not going to post it on facebook. I'm reminded today why I usually do pick up orders from Raley's. Whoever pulls the online orders at Safeway habitually gives our household rotten produce. The rotten tomatoes here are quite obvious and yet they ended up in my bag and I paid for them. On June 13th I sent a family member to pick up the full sheet, 3 leches, strawberry filling cake I had ordered on the phone earlier that week. The cake was horribly decorated (like if a toddler had done it) and it was misspelled. There was no strawberry filling and it was a half sheet. I got a discount and was charged $27 for the misspelling. The cake tasted good but was very embarrassed for my guest to see it. Look at pictures!! I wouldn't of paid anything but since I didn't pick it up, my sister did. When I called to order I spelt it out 3 times and it was suppose to say "Mi bautizo" and "Romeo" and have a cross and some border decor. This is a joke! read more

Not at all happy!!! We were out of milk and bread for breakfast, so I threw on clothes and shoes to run out to Safeway before they closed to buy grab them, arrived at 5 minutes to 1am, got to the door and it was locked, walked down to the other end and checked my phone to make sure the time was what I thought it was, and it was 12:56, so at this point I should have had 4 minutes, enough time to grab the 2 items I drove into town to buy. I searched both doors and there were no notices of reduced hours, and knocking on the door didn't get anyone to come let me in, no one was visible from the door until 1:06am. I usually love Safeway! I used to shop there all the time but I will not be going back to that place ever again! The other day I was shopping for groceries and I went to get some sugar. When I reached for the sugar it was covered in ants! I am really disappointed because they don't even put an effort to take a look at the food to see if there is anything wrong with it. Just left Safeway in Ukiah and wont be back. No checkstands open except quick check and the "do-their-job-for-them' self checks. Long lines of irritated people with full shopping carts (it's Friday after all). But the truly horrible part is the slug they have standing at the self check to "help". There was a little elderly lady ahead of me who was was clearly having trouble scanning her items. Instead of helping her, the slug stood there bellowing at her to follow the directions on the screen! By the 3rd time he yelled at her, I started looking for a manager... none to be found. I followed her out to the parking lot and apologize that she was treated so rudely. She was close to tears. Completely unacceptable! I'll spend my hard-earned money somewhere else. read more

3 am drive up to Fortuna from the Bay Area. Everything is closed and Jennifer is forced to drive when hungry and sleepy and almost ready for a bathroom break, which means that she's also irritable. Thankfully, this Safeway is open 24 hours. So admittedly we were there at an hour when no obnoxious ads are being blasted over the intercom, when employees are more likely to be helpful because you're one of five other people in the store, and the check-out lines are-- what lines??? It's at this hour that the employees are preparing the store for the day: cleaning, stocking, and making the baked goods. We happened to be there right when the bagels came out of the oven and the employee was helpful and friendly: he went out of his way to pull the entire bagel rack out for us so that we could look at them and choose. For 69 cents each for hot, fresh-from-the-oven bagels at 3 am, you can't beat that! read more

Well - it's Safeway - what more can you add? This store looks like it was recently remodelled and it is relatively modern. It's a sprawling monster of a store with plenty of parking lot drama as minivan driving soccer moms jockey for the spots closest to the door (despite an inordinately large parking lot with foot ball field size areas of empty spaces closer to the street). It's corporate. It's almost completely lacking in anything I consider "food" - mostly "food products" and nearly nothing organic or local can be found here. Shoppers who want to buy local and organic produce need look no further than across the street from Safeway - Ukia Natural Grocery is waiting for you. It's smaller, maybe it doesn't have the same selection of national brands, but it's a co-op, locally run and stocking lots of local products. Buy local, or bye-bye local! read more

i ordered on door dash the preparation of one sandwich and some jojos took 25 mins and it wasn't the door dasher it was safeway. The sandwich had pepperoni on it which i didn't order but i ordered peperonchinis which they mistook for pepperoni. on one half of the sandwich there was one pickle, didn't come with napkins or ranch after i ordered it. read more

I do not like this store but the deli and soup choices are amazing. I had the Curry Coconut Chicken Thai soup . Omg to die for. My boyfriend had the loaded potato soup. 3.99-5.00$. The man who works the deli (sandwich) area in the daytime is my favorite. I won't eat here if he isn't working. I had bad experiences with pharmacy and floral and was attacked by the manager when I posted my experience on Facebook. The customer service person was not helpful either(1-800 number not in store ). This Safeway has been declining for years. The employees are mostly friendly and helpful, but everything else about the store is bad. I DO NOT RECOMMEND attempting to pick up prescriptions from their pharmacy. There is always some communication error on one end or another, and it can take hours to days to get your meds. Produce from here is overpriced, and often is no good. The bathrooms are always disgusting. There are multiple other grocery stores in Ukiah (also mediocre) so maybe it's more the town than the store? read more

Kudos to the tall, bearded butcher! He went out of his way to help me get what I was looking for :) I wanted to buy about a pound of the Cod that was on sale, but there was none in the refrigerated tray. He went into the freezer and brought out a large box of frozen Cod. He went on to crack open the box and pulled out a huge piece that was as hard as concrete. I told him I really didn't want that big of a piece. He got very creative and broke the piece in half on the edge of the table. I was a happy camper with my pound of fish :) read more

5 weeks in a row I have gone in and found their stockers placing produce and other grocery products out for customer purchase while they were intentionally not wearing their masks or wearing them without covering their noses. I have complained to the manager on duty, the County Health Department, and Safeway Corporate Office with no change in practice. This morning when I asked one of the produce stockers to pull his mask up and explained why he tried to ignore me and then laughed. If you or someone in your family has serious underlying health risks, I strongly recommend that you shop at Ukiah's Raleys or Lucky stores. With such a large number of Covid cases in our small county, it seems a certainty that Safeway is working on becoming a "Super Spreader". read more

I can't speak for the rest of the store, but what I can say is that this store has the filthiest bathrooms I've ever encountered and that includes some I've been to in third world countries. The most horrifying part of it all is that when I first tried to use the facility, the door was blocked for "cleaning." When I was able to get in, I found there wasn't a single surface what wasn't covered in grime. The floor wasn't wet from a recent mopping, if you get my meaning. Had sitting been required, I would have gone elsewhere. There was even paint on the floor for some unknown reason. We stopped at a freeway rest stop later in the day and in comparison that facility was immaculate. Safeway charges high enough prices to properly maintain their restrooms. Safeway is a 1700 store chain. When I was a boy growing up on the East Coast, every town of any size had its A&P, the go-to, default market of the 40s and 50s. (A&P is no longer a national chain but still has several dozen markets in New York and New Jersey.) Now, especially in the West, that default market, found in every town, is Safeway. There are 8 Safeway stores within 10 miles of my Santa Rosa home, and each town in Mendocino County where I spend my weekends has one also. So it grieves me to say how much I dislike Safeway, and how hard I work to avoid going to it. Most of their stores are open 24 hours, so sometimes they are the best choice. But, they seem to have a corporate policy of requiring every employee to smile and give you a friendly greeting when they see you. I know for a fact this was an organized campaign by their corporate headquarters some years back and it still seems to be in place. Do you know how annoying it gets to be greeted with an obviously forced smile and a cheery, good morning and how are you today EVERY time you encounter a new employee? Sometimes, you get the same greeting from the same employee three times because he/she doesn't recall seeing you a few minutes ago. And why would the employee remember you? He/she is not really interested in you or your welfare. He/she is just going through the prescribed motions. My other complaint is with store organization. Aisles are marked, not sugar and flour and baking supplies, but with labels such as breakfast, dinner, snacks. Where do dried beans fit in that schema? I have a heck of a time finding what I want in their stores. But, I wouldn't want you to think I hate Safeway. How can you hate a supermarket? I do shop elsewhere whenever possible. read more

This review is about the Amazon Locker located inside this Safeway. The locker's got a name: her name is Susan. I had to go pick up my package there and this was my first time using Amazon Locker. Turns out local Safeway shoppers have not seen people using the locker either so when I scanned the barcode in email from Amazon with "Susan" the locker, the random door so abruptly opened and startled everyone including myself. It's located near the entrance/exit so it could be dangerous if someone was passing by close to the locker... luckily no one was hurt and we all got a good laugh about it. Notes to Amazon: can you make Susan less abrupt when opening the door? Her metal door can hurt people. read more

After my last unpleasant unfriendly checkout experience at Ukiah's Safeway, I stayed away a couple of years. I went back today. I bought 3 items, which included loose pastries from the bakery. I'm disabled. The cashier was chatting in Spanish for a long time after ringing up a customer. We waited. She finally got to my order. I paid cash. She began ringing up the next customer's purchase before my order was bagged, and my pastries were spilled onto the dirty checkout belt. I had to go back to the bakery to get clean ones. It will be another couple of years before I try shopping at Ukiah's Safeway again. read more

With St. Patrick's day upon us I went to the butcher and asked for a brisket. He referred me to pre-packed corned beef! He had never heard of brisket. Cashiers are surely and angry. I didn't make them work there why take it out on me? And then, I was told that disabled people are not allowed to shop that store on their own!!! What? I won't be going back. There are other stores that are cleaner, less expensive and have very nice cashiers in Lake County. I don't feel the need to spend my money for abusive, snotty, grumpy clerks. read more

Twas a Wednesday evening at Safeway, when all through the store An announcement was made, usually a bore, Security was called to the aisle that was mine, and lo and behold, I was accuse of a crime lol... OK, So it's early Wednesday evening and I am in the self serve candy bin aisle or whatever you call those things of Safeway in Ukiah. I had scooped up some sour gummy bears into a bag, sealed it with a twist tie and was thinking about getting some whoppers or whatever when I hear an announcement over the PA system. Normally, I don't pay attention to these but this one was calling for security and it was calling for security to go to the aisle I was in. Well, I looked around and thought, well this is interesting, as I was the only person in the aisle. A young man approached me (not identifying himself as store security but I guess his outfit should have been identification enough) and said. "You know you can't sample those". I looked at him, I looked at the bag of sour gummy bears with the twist tie in my hands and I looked at the bins and then looked back at him with that cocked head a dog gives you when they really don't know what you want...lol. He said "the candy, you can't sample any of that". I said something to the effect of.. excuse me? He said.. you're chewing candy. I opened my mouth like a two year old and showed him the gum I was chewing. Then as I was dressed in my suit from work, I said "do I look like I would sample the candy?" He replied people like you are the worst at doing that. Sheesh. Let's just say that Ukiah does have a Raleys, Coop, Grocery outlet, Walmare and foodmax. See ya read more

I love safeway; always great quality foods, and a larger selection of produce than most places around. The checkers and baggers are the friendliest around. A few things, if the manager or an employee is reading this...you have been sold out of coconut milk for months now, which forces me to go to a second store on each of my shopping trips, since I use coconut milk several times a week in cooking. Secondly, the "special announcements" over the intercom were out of control the other day, it was so constant that it was disruptive to my shopping venture. Last but not least...the starbucks inside this specific safeway has never made a decent cup of coffee; espresso drinks are fine but the simple, brewed coffee has been really unpleasant lately. I know all these things are an easy fix, and would never keep me from coming here, and I can't wait til you have coconut milk again!! read more
