After an 8.5 hour journey from Orange County we landed safe in Ukiah but exhausted and hungry. Searched for places near where we were crashing for the night before our next leg of the trek. SOOO GLAD I found this place. It is legit!! We ordered 2 carne asada burritos with everything to go!! So dang good!!! So authentic! The rice, The beans. The asada and everything else!! Yumm!! So good for my weary soul. The homemade flour tortillas reminded me of growing up in central California. I have been craving one ever since. This place did not disappoint! My one gripe is they only give you one side of salsa for your GINORMOUS BURRITO!! Which is probably enough for a normal Person BUT...This salsa roja is FIRE!!! Fantastic flavor with a solid kick!! Hunky hubster and I love heat so for us it was perfect and we were wanting MORE!! Hubs finished his whole burrito but I could only do 1/4 to 1/3 it was so packed full of goodness!! Everyone was helpful and friendly from the employees in the market to the servers/ cooks outside. Was great to watch them make the tortillas while you wait. 5/5 with no complaints only ravings and a deep abiding sadness that it is 8.5 hours (on a good day) away from home. We travel this way once a year to visit my Mother in Love in Brookings for her bday. I will be looking forward to next July when I can have my old school Mexican food longings fulfilled!! If you are bougie don't bother. But if you love the non fancy down to earth road side Mexican food with no flairs or fusion BS, it's definitely worth the time. $30 for 2 Carne Asada burritos LOADED WITH EVERYTHING!! Chavez market is a full service Hispanic market with an excellent meat counter and fresh vegetables. They serve the best and most authentic lunch tacos. They also provide alternate meats like offal. I was able to purchase beef brains for a deerskin tanning project. I love the Chavez market I Ukiah. read more

Wowowow!! This is what you call a hole in the wall. Amazing tacos, fresh handmade tortillas, big portions, and full of flavor. You also get a good view of the mountains while eating outside. My boyfriend took me here 2 days in a row, once for lunch and the other for an early dinner. I think this has to be one of my favorite places to get tacos now. So the process of ordering, you place an order at checkout inside the market. Then head to the wooden building next door, and you let the worker know what meats and condiments you want for the tacos. It was such a treat to experience hand-made tortillas, soft and doughy but holds together well without any tearing like factory made tortillas. The meat was well seasoned and juicy. My order: Pollo w/ cilantro + salsa verde medio + jalapeño, no onions Bf's order: Carne Asada & Carnitas w/ cilantro + salsa verde medio + jalapeño/serrano + onions Next time I visit my bf, he'll have to take us here again. Waited in line for 20 minutes to order food, was told to look at the menu, I looked at the menu for about 40 seconds and went back to the register and the man who just came in to help, AFTER he just told me to look at the menu said I have to go to the back of the line. This famous outdoor Taco stand is well worth a visit. The tortillas are handmade fresh on site, and are thick and delicious. The toppings are so moist and filling. I had Al Pastor and Carnitas - so good! Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area. Highly recommended! read more

One of my favorite establishments in Northern California for tacos. On this most recent visit, I had carnitas and al pastor. I also had a tamale which I picked up inside and found it pretty boring. Not worth the very long wait. Ordered in the store (that was confusing), then took our receipt to wait in line next door where they make the food. There were only 4 people in front of us, but we waited nearly 40 minutes to get to the front, hand over our receipt, and then literally repeat our order because thr receipt didn't contain any details. Then we waited another 15 minutes for our food to be ready. The upside was that it was mostly prepared fresh. You can watch the staff pressing and cooking the tortillas in front of you. The meat is kept warm in hot pots and strangely, there was no chicken, though we weren't aware of that when we paid 40 minutes prior. I ordered a quesadilla and pastor tacos. Meh. The salsa was uninteresting and thr pastor was FLOODED in orange grease. It overflowed my plate walking back to a table and got all over my sweatshirt. The meat was so very salty and mushy. It was almost like ground minced pork flavored grease-sauce. Yuck. Hubby ordered a carne asada super burrito. Nothing spectacular, though it was gigantic, so a good bang for your buck! The tortillas were thr star. Warm, doughy, but with some crispy pockets and edges. Those were a win. The overall experience, however, was not. read more

Stopped by here today and spent 50 dollars on 2 taco plates and a quesadilla with just cheese. Had to tell the lady 3 times it was 2 taco plates which is also on the receipt I handed her and she still only gave me one. And then had to ask for cilantro and onions as well as salsa. Once he got the food it was really flavorless and fatty. So horrible service and not the best food as well. read more

Nice portions and authentic Mexican food. Def recommend the tacos al pastor with onions. The menu is inside the market and the actual restaurant is left of the market. Go order inside the market in checkout and take your receipt to the restaurant to the left of the market. The food is made fresh in front of you so expect a good 10-15 min of wait time--more if there are people in front of you. read more

went in to buy carne asada and they charged extra to marinade it. all they do is put it in the marinade that's on the counter. then the meat is full of fat and chewy. This review is for Primos across the lot. You have to buy the food at the market using a paper menu taped to the window, then take it over to Primos to have them tell someone else to make it. I've been on Yelp for but four months and already feel that I have left Chavez Market patiently waiting for its deserved review. Three words for ya: Best. Tacos. EVER. I moved from Ukiah up here to Seattle and have yet to find anything that can come close to the marinated carne asada goodness from Chavez Market. Order by the taco, as they have a fantastic little "buffet" line outside were YOU get to put whatever toppings YOU like. A little cilantro, some lime, beans and that is all I could ever want. Hand-made corn tortillas served warm right off the griddle.. The salsa = AMAZING. Crazy interaction when I went to return the burrito I ordered because I ordered guacamole off the menu and was charged for it but instead got avocado. I was not mad, cuz every thing is a mess these days. Where it got crazy was when the manager swooped in and started peppering me with questions. "What do you mean, 'guacamole?'" "Why did you bring the burrito back?" And then they said they don't have guacamole and they gave me "guacamole salsa" which is just light green watery nothing sauce. I have no idea why "guacamole " is on the menu and they don't seem to know either. Very twilight zone. read more

This used to be the best place to get tacos in town. They make the best authentic carnitas and homemade tortillas. Most of the ladies cooking don't speak very good English but one of them was very nice. It used to have a great salsa bar with cabbage and cilantro. Apparently because of COVID they're no longer allowing the same condiments. On the side of each order are grilled onions and jalapeños, but they often run out of them and this last time they ran out of carnitas. I'm so bummed because I used to recommend them to anyone despite their atmosphere and service. The food used to be so good that sitting outside on a dirty picnic bench was worth it. As many have mentioned, the setup where you pay next door at the market and then eat al fresco by the cooking area is a bit odd. However, except for the fact it was 44 degrees while we were dining, it's ok. The star of the show is the fresh handmade tortillas and quesadillas. The lady putting them together is a serious non-stop cooking machine. Salsa bar was very nice. Had the more typical salsas in salad bar type containers but had red and green molcajete style salsas served in molcajetes. These were on the spicy side, so be careful. read more

This is a modest taqueria with great food. Yes, you have to walk into the market next door and place your order in the checkout line, then sit outside while a woman cooks your food at an outdoor stand. However, it's worth it. We had taco platters and a quesadilla. It was delicious and super cheap. The woman was so kind and happy to serve us. We were so happy to give her our business and we will again if we are ever in the area. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed! read more

So my boyfriend took me here for the first time ever. He talks alot about this place and just made it sound like it is the best authentic Mexican food place to go. The food didn't take to long to make the area was pretty clean not a lot of flies around and the lady was super nice. But when it came to my quesadilla it was pretty gross. My chicken was refrigerator cold. It was super soggy and the cheese wasn't even melted. I didn't say anything until my boyfriend noticed that I took two bites and stopped eating.
