Looking with a magnifying glass, you need to by 2 to 3 of the same item to get the flyer price. The hot take-out hot is sugar or salt saturated (I know it's not Whole Foods). Maybe okay to shop here if there's no other option, or just drive a couple of KM's from this place for bulk of my needs. read more

I went to get my prescription after waiting a week. When I went in they brought me the wrong medicine - and the bag even had someone else's name on it. They said that they made a mistake and would have to fill my prescription again and it would take an hour. I asked them to send me a message when it's ready and they said yes. But it's been a day with nothing. I'm worried that these mistakes will lead to someone (or me) getting the wrong medicine. Which could be dangerous or even lethal. read more

Sadly, Safeway has headed in the same direction as Save-On, which is in steep decline. The produce managers have one job, to keep good quality produce on the shelves, and remove old produce that is near expiry. Unfortunately, both companies seem to have implemented policy of combined price gauging (low quality produce for twice the price you pay at green-grocers for high quality produce), and an attempt to sell produce well past due date rather than replenish shelves with recent orders sitting in cold storage. There is ZERO excuse for moldy produce on your shelves, yet it is now common practice at Safeway and Save On locations to sell moldy goods. read more

This has got to be one of the nicer Safeway's I've ever been too. Its a huge, brightly it store with two(!) levels. There's a huge, underground parking lot. You take elevators to access the store. I came here with the main objective of snagging a bunch of Lay's Ketchup Chips. Ketchup chips are one of Vancouver's many gifts to the world. It sounds simple but these chips have intense flavor - sweet, salty, and vinegary all at the same time. For some reason, it seems impossible to find them in the USA and I'm not even sure they are available online. Be sure to try some when in Vancouver. We bought 12 bags during a sale of 2 for 5 CAD. Excellent gifts to bring back home. Even the border patrol agent agreed they're awesome. read more

One of my favourite grocery stores. They have ample free parking spaces that are not narrow or with low ceilings. They also one escalator and an elevator. The store is always kept clean and the staff are friendly. I particulalry enjoying shopping at the Marpole location, especially after they created a large Asian food area. They have a large selection of authentic Asian cooking ingredients, produces and a good variety of rice. I can happily abandon going to the overly crowded and smelly T&T with limited parking space. read more

Not my go to Safeway. But I do pass by it every time I return or go to Richmond. Parking here is hard to get in. You can only get into the parkade heading south. If you are heading north and want to enter you will have to make a detour. So the good thing about this Safeway is that its quiet. plentiful free parking. If the item is on sale than there is a high chance you will find it in stock. staffs are ok. may have to hunt someone down if you need help. This Safeway is spacious and big. read more

I am a fan of this Safeway. I see staff always on their feet working and serving customers. I am very happy with how they handle customer care for both Safeway staff and Starbucks staff. Everyone is very happy to work around here and they are always smiley and helpful. I don't think I've seen such a unison in any other Safeway locations. There is definitely something special about this one. :) Produce is super fresh. Everything seems well-maintained. I am a happy shopper. Huge parking lot underground. I usually hate Safeway... In the USA! But here in Canada, I love that they have their own dedicated parking garage, you have multiple points of entry/exit, the store is kept immensely clean and selections are packed a-plentiful especially given the store being in a city. Came here earlier this morning because I really hate the features of the hotel that I'm staying at (Days Inn Vancouver Airport, and yes I have a 2-star review of it up already). Anyway, found myself in the bath aisle, excuse me, *washroom* aisle (this is Canada, get the fuck out of here with your "restroom", USA!). Got myself shampoo, body wash, and lotion. No tissues. Toured produce, selection seemed fresh. However since I'm not living here, there was no need to buy any. Didn't have time to tour any of the other departments, but I did buy an umbrella which I found in a rack by the customer service counter past the check out stands. Speaking of checkout, they take Android Pay here. In fact, on a sidenote, I've noticed a lot of places in Vancouver take Android/Apple Pay, but I know of few places in the United States that do. Customer service was neat-o, cashier was kind, we chatted briefly about differences between USA-California and Canada-Vancouver, and the cashier was surprised that in California by law most places are required to charge 10 cents for a freaking plastic bag, when they just give em out like free candy here in Vancouver apparently. As far as entry/exit points: When you enter the underground garage, you can either enter from the street above or the street below. Once you enter the garage and park your car, there are two doors you can go to on either side, or if you're on the street side above you can enter from yet another two front entrances. There's also an elevator and escalator, with a special escalator that'll take your shopping cart up to the actual store itself. Very few places in the US do this, except for maybe the big metropolitan cities like Chicago, NYC and LA/SFO, you just don't see these types of cart-escalators in most major grocery stores USA-side. All in all, happy I could get a pit stop in here and, if I were to relo to Vancouver, I could see myself coming to this Safeway a bit more often than other grocery stores that I've passed through so far. read more

I want to buy some meat per my wife instruction. Could not find the cut of meat. I asked the butcher and he said that he would look at the back. He came back out and said that he had it and ask how much and I gave him the quantity. He came back with the product. When I brought it home, my wife told me that he had given me the most expensive cut of that particular cut of meat. She would not have purchased it at that price per pound. Although not illegal, that was just playing to the customer's ignorance to upsell. Obviously partly my fault for not knowing what is the price range for certain cuts of meat and I will learn going forward. But unfortuantely for you, I have completely lost my trust in safeway. read more

Bought two packages of chicken thighs totally approx. $40. Skin on and I knew I would have to remove it for my taste and health but was shocked to see how much fat was tucked under the thighs so the buyer could not see it. I weighed the discarded skin and it was 1 1/2 lbs :-(((( So basically, I paid for 1 l/2 lbs for something that I had to throw away!!!! Wow, this is probably the most beautiful Safeway I've seen outside of the Seattle area (where I lived for 25 years prior to moving to Van 2 years ago. I used to shop at Safeways regularly in the States. It was my go-to grocery store. And I was SO disappointed in Safeway stores when I moved here). This store is gorgeous, and large, with wide aisles, a swanky deli and bakery and ready-made food area, with an antipasto bar, a cheese island, all sorts of gourmet fare, the most gorgeous and extensive pharmacy department I've seen in any store in Van city, lovely produce section and huge condiment section. Every department was well-stocked when I visited and the prices, well-marked. In general, pricing is on a par with Urban Fare, lower than Whole Foods, higher than No Frills. They have decent sales and a better selection of most items than many other chain grocery stores (except for Jewish/kosher foods. They have minimal to no kosher foods here. But there's a ton of Asian fare). They have a large, free, underground parking lot, and multiple cash registers (some self-serve, others manned by employees). Reading some of the other reviews that gave this store a poor rating, I see that most of these were written years ago. I suspect the store and employees have all changed since then. I was really impressed by this store, so much so, in fact, that I called my kid as I was wandering up and down the aisles, telling her I found a Safeway that was similar - if not even nicer - than our old, posh Safeway in the States. I would not have expected this swanky store to be located here, on a commercial part of Granville in unassuming Marpole. It's really lovely. My only issues I have with this store pertain to some of the ready-made foods I purchased at the deli. I got a Shrimp Pad Thai bowl for $7.99; it looked great but it was quite spicy (even my kid couldn't eat it, and she has a high spice/heat tolerance), and the noodles were mushy. It would've been helpful if they noted on the label that it was spicy. I ended up throwing it out. I also got a small container of chow mien noodles which, when heated up, tasted smokey and burnt and just "weird" as my kid said. I also got a small container of honey garlic chicken nuggets which turned out to be like globular globs of breaded honey. Also "weird", with zero chicken taste. I ended up throwing out both the noodles and the "chicken". The two sushi trays I got were good, thankfully, and I got some good deals on some gourmet sauces and condiments on sale. read more

This supermarket was definitely a step down from some of the Safeway stores in the Burnaby area. There isn't even a Starbucks inside (GASP)! One good thing about this Safeway location is that they sell all day bus tickets here, which came in handy. There are also many bus stops along Granville St; very public transportation friendly, sadly more so then in the Los Angeles area. Props to them for having indoor recycling and FREE wifi. Fun fact: you need to put a coin deposit for borrowing a supermarket cart, but it's dispensed back to you when you return it! read more

Safeway is trying to change. I did comparison shopping in high school cooking class (what a field trip!) and Safeway was definitely the most expensive, with Save-On and a Buy-Low pretty close to each other. Since then, every time I come to Safeway, I ended up getting only the necessary items and Club Card Sale items. Now, they have many yellow tags saying 'new reduced price', which -- though I haven't independently confirmed that they are certainly lower than other stores -- have changed my perception of the chain for the better. This location also has very helpful pharmacists. Although I have never brought my prescriptions here, a few different pharmacists have been equally helpful with my specific over-the-counter questions. I just realized I don't know if their carts take Loonies or Quarters -- just proves that I used to view Safeway as a necessities-only stop where I only need a basket. Disgusting. Bought a Roast Chicken, brought it home, started slicing into it...it smelled old - like by at least 2 days. Then I noticed the entire neck still attached to this bird, all the way down it's back. Never seen this on a Safeway Roast Chicken before. They were on Sale today, for $9.99, and they had many of them - more than would fit in the display case. The wings on this bird are dry to almost black in colour. Although the sticker on the cardboard wrapper is Today (July 15, 2021), this bird is far from Fresh. I will no longer purchase any Food from this location that the Staff has handled or prepared. This is the closest Safeway to me, but also arguably the absolute best one I've ever shopped at. This particular store has everything I need -- regular everyday items (milk, eggs, meats, breads) to ethnic food items like chicken feet, Korean kalbi ribs, hotpot meats, European cheeses, etc. The high points are the clean, welcoming environment, the deli, the pharmacy, and fast food counter (which is often quite a good deal), and the Starbucks in the corner isn't bad either. As with pretty much all grocery stores, the best prices are middle of the week, towards the end of the month, when food items are due to be restocked. The staff is friendly and efficient, and I always go to them instead of the cumbersome checkout machines. My only gripe is that certain veggie items are way overpriced (sometimes four or five times what the mom-n-pop store charges), so you have to be a smart shopper. Oh, and coupon up! read more

So I have an update to my last post... really want to add something positive but to be brutally honest there is nothing forth coming. I came in to the store today to buy some veggies to supplement the dinner meal I was about to prepare at home. Overall really disappointed with the level of quality in the produce. If you're going to charge primo prices for your produce it better be top-notch in quality and freshness. * All bell peppers are or are nearly $5 a piece in the wall displayer and all had blemishes or looked inedible. (These are in the same display shown in your profile picture). * English cucumbers are an ok price but all were soft. I wish I had taken a picture some were so soft the ends were shriveled and looked on the verge of moldy. I notice another customer going through the same frustration although they were a little more vocal about it. He actually approached me and said, "if this was my store I wouldn't put this out" ..."if you came to my store would you buy this". He was referring to the pre packaged mandarin oranges. He picked up one of the oranges that were in the bag and said, "if these were fresh I should not be able to do this" he said as he picked it up and squished it to pieces. I had to agree with him and told him so. He also said to me "I've been coming here for years and it didn't use to take 20 minutes just to find a navel orange you would want to buy you should at these prices be able to just pick one up and put it in bag". He told me that he was going to complain to the manager and I hope he did but just in case he didn't I felt the need to share this experience. In contrast to my last post in regards to their service, it has improved somewhat the staff for the most part are more friendly and helpful. Though this is one less "beef" I have with this store there are several more of which I won't go into at this point. I remember Safeway being more like a Thrifty, or Rite Aid...this was more like a fancy grocery...like one of those Vons that is high-brow with wooden shelving and stuff. Or like a little Trader Joes-y. We needed the basics for our condo in Whistler. I got a handle on the exchange rate ok, so it wasn't all that bad, but it wasn't cheap. We got exactly the basics...coffee creamer, eggs, chips and salsa, a few veggies, some cheese, tortillas, turkey sausage....basically breakfast stuff. They had everything we were looking for. I only go to Safeway if traffic is horrible (I live 1 min away from this location) or if I have no ride. There have been more than once where I've bought something from here and realized that the expiration date is literally only a couple days away or ALREADY EXPIRED. I remember that I bought a box of juice, came home, drank it and it instantly had a foul taste. I was so shocked given that Safeway is a grocery store that isn't even 100% organic and has outrageous prices. I expect them to have proper food handling and food care for the price I am paying. I also agree with one of the comments that the employees working in the deli are never attentive and they are RUDE. I have stood there countless times and always had to wait for them to finish what they're doing to serve me, like wtf? I don't have all day to wait for you to finish cutting / slicing cheese or listen to you talk to a co worker about non related work issues. It's like a social club for them. It's unbelievable. Then when they finally come to serve you, you feel very unwelcomed to the point where you wish you never even bothered with them. I hate this place. read more

This safe way no longer provides bags. Even if you pay for them you have to wait 5 min for someone to being it to you. I feel like I am being nickel and dimed. Reusable bags are worse for the environment not better. read more

One of the older ones for sure, it's remarkable they still haven't updated...hopefully soon as a new condo developent taking place where the old Royal Bank used to be, or is it behind it, drive by granville so fast lol. Whoever designed the parking lot, in particular the first row nearest to the doors, must be crazy. You have to back out at an angle, while shoppers coming and going. Thus why i choose the middle one, or even the farthest one right by the sidewalk on granville, at least no door dings. Inside, it feels old, & lights also don't seem to be so bright. decent size. read more

Moved to this area 1 1/2 years ago and since then, I have been continually disappointed by this Safeway. Products kept on the shelf too long, terrible service, unhappy staff, bakery is terrible, all this in a very old building. Only saving grace is the pharmacy. I contacted the head office and I've been told that it will go through a complete renovation in the near future. Hopefully the staff too. Avoid it until then. Cheers! read more

Ya, the store is old etc but that I can deal with. What I can't deal with is the bitchy staff from the deli. Don't ask for custom made sandwiches too early in the day or you will get a sandwich made with a poor, pissy attitude! Its a shame cuz safeway deli's make a pretty good sandwich and this safeway location is on my way to wreck beach. I would like to take a sandwich to the beach with me but I don't want to "interrupt" the deli staff at 10am to make me one again! read more

I read through all the reviews here and there are a few I just have to agree with. The prices are insane! I live very close and I don't have a car so am limited on where I can shop quickly. I cringe every time I get to the til and my bag or two of groceries costs me nearly $100. The signage is a huge problem. I constantly see sake signs up that are expired. One, the "sale" price was the same as the regular price AND it had expired a week ago- what! The thing that really annoyed me recently was a sale on Ben and Jerry's ice cream. All were on sale for $3.99- awesome right? Except the dairy free versions were still regular price at $8.99!!! $5 more than the dairy version. Safeway charges ridiculous prices for most dairy free/vegan items like they are against them and want people not to buy them so they can claim there's no market. More and more people are realizing they are lactose intolerant and more people go vegan every day- stop punishing us with I sane prices because it's not your view. And finally- the deli staff. Reviews of these people's behaviour go back 5+ years, yet it's still mostly the same staff acting the same way. They do NOT want to help customers. You walk up to order and they look at you, but then continue what they're doing, chatting and slicing cheese usually. Then when you don't leave, they end to roll their eyes and just generally act like you're burdening then by making them do their jobs. Does anyone read these reviews? This one section of your store is losing you money by acting this way- I used to buy mojos all the time but refuse to go back to the deli to be treated like trying to give you my money is a burden. read more

I was coming here just about every day for one month to get a deli sandwich. Today, the debit was down, and I was instructed to go to the ATM at the bank next door. As I only get a 15 minute break, I ran over to get money (paying the fee, of course) and rushed back to grab my sandwich only to be told they had thrown it away. Believe it or not, I actually bought my first ever loaf of Jewish rye here. Of course that was back in the day, way before the facelift. I kinda missed the aroma and fragrance of that long discontinued Safeway-branded offering. Fast forward to now, the store seems to have double in size with more of everything. Well almost, with the exception of a half-hearted attempt dipping into the Asian market. But at least they have kimchi now. read more

As a long time resident of Vancouver, I have nostalgic memories of the pre-2012 renovated safeway. Post renovation Safeway is a bit chichi.. but No one can deny that it is a huge step up from its previous iteration. The slick new lines and fresh architecture make for a pretty nice experience. The inside is more welcoming and dimly lit - a far cry from the harsh white wastelands of the typical grocery store. I sometimes choose to shop at superstore due to the 25% price difference, but Safeway is nearby and makes me feel high class when I shop there :P read more

This Safeway has been my go-to for the last few months. They provide a good selection of meats, cheeses, breads, and so on. I find their produce is a bit more expensive than most. I started to think I was accidentally buying organic but I wasn't. For the sake of my review though I don't normally buy produce from these guys but it's something worth mentioning. Their frozen food section is ok, with a good portion of their frozen stuff on special. I suspect that this is because I rarely see people down that section in this store. So I wonder if it doesn't sell as well. Either way it works for me! Their meat section is good if slightly poorly organized. I had a hard time finding regular ground beef, I thought I found it, but it was ground pork. I wish they would organize it a bit better. Their lunch selections is pretty respectable! Sushi, Chinese Food, and the Sandwich Bar are good and offer reasonable prices :) While not perfect, this store is pretty decent. They should look into changing the hours advertised. I like doing my shopping early and sites online say they open for instance at 8 on Sundays when they open at 7. read more

Yeah! The Safeway is rebuilt now and is all nice, clean, and shiny. It looks exactly like a Vons (Southern California) inside, which is also owned by Safeway. It's conveniently located on Granville, so it's nice to be able to walk by and pick up a few things. There's also free underground parking which I appreciate a lot. Elevator or escalator to come up. Parking entrance is right turn on Granville southbound, NO LEFT TURN for northbound traffic. Exit onto 70th Ave by the Liquor Store. You might also be able to enter here. Prices are a bit high, but I usually only shop the weekly ad items. If you need produce/fruits, might go to the little market across the street for better prices. The bakery stuff is pretty yummy, though. There's a good selection of Asian items. All the supermarket aisle signs have Chinese sub-titles. :| Don't need a club card anymore to get those weekly ad savings. Hurry! I hated those cards, extra hassle to carry around and always tracking your purchases. Good riddance! read more

I've always liked the store layout and the fact that it isn't so busy. The one problem was the price, so I usually didn't go here. That's changed, and it's now one of the most competitively priced supermarkets in the city. Also was very happy that they sliced the cheese to a size that is good for me. (Other supermarkets don't slice cheese). If you haven't been to safeway since the prices have dropped, do yourself a favour and go now. read more

I agree with the above posters that the new building is very shiny and much larger. Presentation and planning stepped up, as did product availability. The produce section is much healthier looking. Sadly, all these things cannot balance out poor staff training and attitude. The first time I tried to shop here, it went fairly smoothly... I checked out my groceries, then asked the cashier to call me a cab. She seemed confused, and finally told me to go to customer service. Customer service shoved a phone at me when I asked them to do it; I didn't know the new address, or where the cabs usually picked people up. It was awkward, and I had to play twenty questions with the girl who was just standing behind the counter while I made the call....but I figured... "Hey, they must still be working out policies for this stuff. I'll try again." Second time to shop. I tried using the "self check out" . One of my items didn't scan right, so the staff had to come over. Staff took the item, and wandered over to a phone, called overhead for help. No one came. She called three more times before just standing there awkwardly, waiting for someone else to do a price check. Still no one came. Then she walked the three steps over towards the deli department where the item was. Asked the girl over there; that deli staff member didn't know the product information either(It was a Cheese and Mash, found in a rack five metres from her in the deli department). At this point, I had been standing in the "Quick Step Checkout" till for ten minutes. Exasperated, I walked the twenty steps to where the item was, grabbed a same brand different variety but same priced product, scanned it, and asked for my product(Cheese and Mash) back. While I had taken that twenty steps, she had given the pack to staff for a price check. We wait another five minutes. She comes back with a price... but not with the original product. Staff in the department had mixed up "Cheese and Mash" with "Creamy Baked Potato". I clearly state that the product name is "Cheese and Mash". A second employee goes to go fetch one. This time they bring back "Loaded Baked Potato!". Still not "Cheese and Mash", as I had clearly stated. Twice. I ended up thanking the employee to end the interaction, grabbing the correct product, myself, from the same area, and leaving. Poor training, poor listening skills, poor product knowledge, and utter customer service fail. I'll be continuing to shop at Whole Foods instead, as I did when the store was closed for renovations. *shakes head* read more

First off, let me say this: Safeway offers great food at great price, so no knock there. However, this location is terrible for their customer service. I understand that you hire employees to cater to the demographic but being fluent in English is important, not everyone speaks foreign languages. In addition to the madness of trying to decipher what an employee is saying is the nuisance the employee thinks you are because you do not understand their version of English. read more

The dairy case where the milk is kept looks and smells like it never gets cleaned. Over the last few years I have politely commented to the staff about the lack of cleanliness, and have been told that the racks would be cleaned next week. Next week comes, and the racks are dirtier than the week before. read more

I only shop here when absolutely necessary. Wayyy over priced and every time I walk out I am unhappy that I had to go. They are about to go through a major renovation and I just cringe because I know the prices will also probably be "renovated."
