High expectations for this store, but desolutioned. It was nice for the first few months, but they are back to their old ways. On a Saturday afternoon, a jazz band was playing loudly competing against the background music in the aisles. Meanwhile I couldnt find bananas. Trash and litter were all over the produce section. Cases of water were gone and the were lots of empty shelves. Did I miss the hurricane warning? I drove to the O street market were civilization prevails. I went this morning to get a cup of coffee at the Starbucks. Ten minutes went by as I stood on line. I knew I couldn't get a breakfast sandwich as the shelves were empty, but at least I could get coffee. Nope. When my turn arrived 13 minutes later, the barista told me that they were out of plain coffee. No Venti Pike for me. She asked that I waited 5 minutes. I walked away. They are very concerned about getting entertainment and food samples at the store. Maybe they should focus on keeping shelves stocked. The cute "customer in training" carts don't work on a store with narrow aisles and aggressive hipsters. I truly hope they look into consistency of high service and well stocked shelves and erase their reputation of being the "stinky Safeway." read more

I stop here to grab lunch every so often. I used to regularly visit the Starbucks located inside, but I won't buy anything else from this one after my last visit. I ordered a tea latte and the lady working behind the counter was completely clueless about what that was or how to make it. I don't expect to have to walk a barista through the process of how to make a drink. Anyhow, this Safeway location seems to have inconsistent supply of items. If I see something once, I might not see it the next time I'm here and that's disappointing as I expect a supermarket to have things regularly. I was particularly looking for mascarpone cheese on this visit and did not see it. I didn't even bother to ask anyone because in the past I've been treated like I was bothering the person I asked. Also, the restrooms are in a really inconvenient place and were not clean. And every time I'm here, there are birds inside. If it wasn't in such a great location that is convenient for me to grab food during the work day, I would not come here. read more

I've just spent the last 36 hours in the emergency room because of bad pasta salad from this store. The expiration date showed okay but the contents were bad. I know it was the pasta salad because it was tested. So much food on the shelves is out dated. If the health department came in the store it would be closed down. read more

OK, sometimes Yelp reviewers are a little too elitist. I'm glad that Safeway was willing to serve the neighborhood, long before Yes! arrived. No, it isn't a some chic-chic upscale supermarket, but it has the basics. I, for one, appreciate being able to pay $0.89/lb for pasta and not $3 or $4 or whatever it is at Yes!. And they do have a small selection of organic items (dairy, juices) if that's what you're looking for. read more

I started out -- on a pre-opening tour -- very optimistic, but my joy has faded. The store is physically still new, so should be cleaner. On several visits lately, aisles are blocks with products, today it was a car-sized pile of cardboard. I eat simply, so expect my visits to be quick, stuff around the edges, you know. But sadly when I find products unavailable, staff is 50-50 on helping out. Today, I was in search of yogurt, that is, the diary product made of milk and biota -- no corn starch, no pectin, no "Greek" label that means only that it has been strained for you to make it thicker (I can do that myself when I want that consistency). The diary guy, Bobby, was not interested in my search, said no one has ever mentioned this issue to him, and there was nothing he could do about it. He said I could talk to the manager (whose name I haven't found yet, thus am posting here), but she had no control over stock either, as that is all controlled by "corporate." I'm disappointed, as this totally contradicts the promises at the opening that the local store would respond to local requests. read more

I live in the Petworth area and was overjoyed to learn that our new Safeway was extending its hours and would now be open 24 hours every day. As I work nights, this would be a great convenience for me. But,sadly, the advertised 24 hour service is, in my experience, false advertising. More than once I have gone to the store in the early morning hours only to find the doors locked. I know things sometime happen unexpectedly but there was not even a temporary sign offering some kind of explanation. Overall, I like the new Safeway but if they are unable, or just unwilling, to be open all night then they should have the courtesy to change the hours they have posted. Sadly, I think I'll just have to make the extra effort to go to the Giant. Its further away but at least I can count on them to be open. Apparently in Columbia Heights 24 hours actually means ALL night, not just late night. read more

I unfortunately had the displeasure of being forced to shop at this Safeway when I lived in Petworth and had no other options readily available to me since I don't have a car. This place is an absolute hole. The first thing I noticed half the time when I went in is the smell (I'm not even exaggerating) of soiled diapers in the produce section. I don't know what they did that it only intermittently smelled, but I avoided buying produce from the store when possible. They also had a mouse problem, but it didn't at all seem to bother them - when I brought back a loaf of bread that I noticed had been eaten into by a mouse, the response I got was "Well, it looks like Mr. Jenkins is back!" After this, I noticed even some cereal boxes chewed up on the corners - make sure you check anything you buy there for signs of mice. The one thing I didn't encounter was bad customer service (aside from the reaction to my mouse-eaten bread). Mind you, it wasn't great, but it wasn't noticeably bad either. read more

Avoid the checkout person Leslie! I gave her my reusable bags, she rang up $160 of groceries, and then she said that if customers don't explicitly ask her to bag groceries at the beginning, she won't do it. I told her I'd never heard any checkout person say that, and if she didn't want to use my bags, she could use plastic bags. She then stormed off for 10 minutes, while I and three people behind me in line waited, until another checkout person finally came over to bag the groceries. Never seen anybody at this Safeway with such a rude and obnoxious attitude; they should fire her. read more

I tend to stick to the bigger and cleaner Giant in Columbia Heights for my grocery shopping but when Safeway is having a really good sale on something I'll drive over here. I've always been able to find a space in their parking lot but it's kinda cramped. Inside definitely feels a bit dirty and not as neat and organized as I'd like. I tend to stay away from the produce but they get points for carrying my favorite flavor of Ben and Jerry's which Giant does not. read more

God awful grocery store. Needs better management desperately. Here for getting a few things before Thanksgiving get & the produce is awful, wilted veggies everywhere, no loose granny smith apples, stands in front of broth which is on lowest (hidden level), ppl randomly restocking stuff that's not out & stacks of wine bottles & beer all over the place making it 10x harder to get around. read more

Terrible. I've shopped here for 5 years for no other reason than I live in the neighborhood, but I've always thought it was a crap store. It's small, dirty and cramped. Usually too few cashiers means long lines after work. Customer service is fair, but one of their employees actually insulted me today right out of the blue, which is what prompted me to write this review. If I had even the smallest soft spot in my heart for this store, I might have given them 2 stars, but they just totally suck - and now on top of all that, they've treated me with rudeness. It's ok- manager (the lady- don't know her name) ignores customers, won't even smile and say hi. They don't open too many automated check out counters early in the morning. Good selection and nice prices by default but if I was overseeing this branch, I'd implement some changes. read more

This is a great grocery store. Compared to the one that is in a less gentrified neighborhood right up the street, its like heaven.

I really like this Safeway! I had avoided it for a while, not expecting much, but I went in to explore one day and was very impressed with the produce section, the meat section, and the selection of products in general. I also love the warm,tasteful lighting scheme, adds ambience and makes shopping a pleasure. Never had any problems with the cashiers, not sure why other reviewers are complaining. read more

I have no idea what Safeway store the other reviewers are talking about. Yes, this is a newly built store and yes, it is MUCH nicer than the one it replaced. This store is very convenient (walking distance) and offers a wide selection of groceries and produce to an area of town that has been wanting for years. With that said, I was shocked the first time I went into the store. The entryway was filthy, the flower shop looked like a disaster zone, and the produce section did not have lettuce or garlic available. What is up with that?? I decided to give it another try a few weeks later. This time I ended up encountering a VERY RUDE employee at the meat counter (FYI, I am that nice guy that is always polite ... even in the face of rudeness). The associate clearly saw me standing at the counter. It was 7:50 pm and she was laughing it up on the phone with the cord wound about her body and literally had her hands IN A TRASH CAN! She finally realized that I was not going to just walk away. She told the person on the other line that she needed to go and proceeded to walk over to the meat counter asking me what I wanted. She then turned off the light in the meat cooler and proceed to tell me that the counter closes at 8:00 pm. I said that I was sorry, and did not realize that they closed at that hour. Then, I innocently asked what time it was (honestly not knowing ... I looked at my phone and saw that it was 7:55 pm ... according to the U.S. Naval Observatory ... official time in the U.S. ... our cell phones are automatically synced to this unless you change it yourself). The associate continued to act as if she was doing me a huge favor by doing her job. As she wrapped up the pork chop, I politely declined to take it telling her that I did not want to put her out and then asked for the manager's name. I went to the front customer service booth and proceeded to wait five minuets before anyone even acknowledged my presence and then another five minuets for the manager to answer the call ... not sure if she ever showed up ... I decided that I don't need to shop at Safeway. There are plenty of other stores with great customer service in the neighborhood. read more
